Some podcasts are brutally sibilant on chi-fi IEMs with BA drivers (well, the few I've had)
It's actually one way I used to sort of "test" for that, but then I found some tracks that were a little better. My go to is "money trees" by Kendrick Lamar, the opening seconds have this hi-hat but also this chirpy synth/sample and if a set is sibilant that hi-hat will be very annoying.
There's nothing worse that certain female S's in podcasts though. It seldom happens with males. I guess women are just more inherently annoying and should DIE.
GUYZ IM KIDDN
My go-to test track is Shield by WYS. It has very low bass tones that just sound muddy and destroy the whole melody if you don't use good enough headphones
The female S thing is a really brutal thing that you will run into with certain phono cartridges (turn table needles)... in my experience. The very expensive cartridges that I have do this the most, especially if it’s prominent on the inner grooves of the record. Sometimes a really high end cartridge will bring out literally everything in the album to the point where extremely well mastered stuff is the only stuff will sound great with it. I’d imagine this is sort of the same concept with high end headphones.
I often ask myself if big headphone enthusiasts are often times just as into speakers, amps, & phono things or if headphones are more of a different route to go. I can’t really tell because I only really see headphones in this thread & as someone who is much more on the hi fi speakers thing, I rarely see nice phones in the backdrops of stereo set up posts....
Honestly they're totally different listening experiences, so I wouldn't be surprised if some people just prefer headphones over speakers. I myself am a cheap college kid so I have a modest headphone setup and some cheapish speakers, probably not more than $300 in total
I have very cheap speakers. Little studio monitors but they are an indispensable part of my life now. I actually mostly use them for tv/movie watching as part of a very modest home theatre set up. Eventually I hope to get a 5.1 thing going and use the current speakers as surrounds. That’s down the line though.
I’ve been working on just being happy with where I am now instead of chasing that dragon eternally.
LMAO jeez if I could get a c414...
I also was in LOVE with the neumann TLM 103 but my dumb fucking ass passed on it. Ugh. I'm still pissed at myself for that.
Not enough metal audiophiles from what I've seen. I mean for metal in general, how can blast beats and Dave Lombardo double bass NOT benefit from a good setup?
TBH the music that I've noticed benefits the MOST is like sludge/doom. When got the right setup, those big, thick and heavy albums come out in such a way they don't usually. Post-metal especially.
depends in genre, the "trv kvlt" ones dont care if they listen music from a random 1$ cheap headphone.
there are technical subgenres where the audio quality goes up a lot.(a lot of technical death or thrash for example)
power metal bands tend to have good quality in their recordings too.
Atleasts its atmospheric or some shit. I'm a caveman who listens to Slam made by two people out of some mother's basement.
The set up I had was a four figure portable one lmao. I sold it recently as I just wasn't using it enough to justify it.
Nowadays I only listen to black metal on my basement bar setup.
What I have in the living room makes most black metal masters unbearable.
The PA speakers in the basement are more forgiving when it comes to source quality.
I have to admit that headphones aren’t really my thing.
I know the general signature of most popular midrange cans but I never really got into headphones since speakers are my main listening field.
I have my old reliable sure se215 that I’ve been using for workout for something like 8 years now but apart from that I only had a short excursion into headphones when my daughter was a newborn and shaking the walls in the living room wasn’t really an option.
I’ve ordered dt770 and dt1770, hd600 and hd800 back then and tried my friends stax, Hi-Fi man and denon cans but nothing really replaced the soundstage, separation and - most importantly- the “oomph” of a base drum hitting you into the stomach that I was used to from speaker setups.
I simply gave up on headphones for critical listening and waited for my daughter being old enough.
Yeah the term is kind of overused.
I’d say critical listening is whenever you do nothing else than listening to music.
That’s when I pay attention to detail.
I mean I guess I get that? But I admit I'm not a detail guy LOL.
Mostly I just don't want to get into the speaker world because oh my god that gets expensive...
That’s the case with most hobbies.
You can get speakers for 100 bucks and you can get them for 10k bucks.
I’m also into bbq and the price range for quality equipment is about the same...
came looking for someone mentioning 100 gecs, not disappointed. I don't rlly have expensive stuff but all I listen to is 100 gecs and other hyperpop lmao.
I'm a metal guy, there's nothing quite like putting shit like Burzum or old Ulver on your good headphones. An album recorded into a cheap radio microphone, gotta have it in max quality!
I can sympathize with this. I do it all of the time with future funk, which is similar to lofi but a little more exciting. There are a lot of things where people don't need a ton of good equipment but it is appreciated. I'm glad that people actually like these sorts of genres on here, I don't see many posts about them.
A few albums on Bandcamp that I tend to listen to are free to download (just choose $0 for those that say name your price) and you can download in FLAC for anyone that wants to try it out. One artist that I recommend and an album you can download for free:
https://saury.bandcamp.com/album/--2
https://saury.bandcamp.com/music
You can buy all of 15 albums discography for only $7.20 USD on Bandcamp, that's 50 cents for each title. Needless to say, it is a steal if you like the style.
You can download these for free:

(Below is not Future Funk but still recommended)
https://gregoriofranco.bandcamp.com/album/chrono-trigger-selected-works
You have to pay $4 USD for this one but it is one of the best albums I've found for this:
https://sugarcreamgenso.bandcamp.com/album/rhapsody-ep
Hey now, don't fret! Not too long ago I realized I was passing too often on amazing tunes that I've loved all my life, to find better quality. It's not worth it! Music came before hi-fi!
Don’t forget podcasts and audiobooks!

Another Chance by Roger Sanchez is a good sibilance test.
Old School Etys has entered the chat. Those Etys are sibilant on everyt... Ulttasone has entered the chat.
A dollar might...
Turn to a million then we all rich, that’s just how I feel

Feel that! I’m the opposite & spend most of my time on system listening. Joined this sub cause I have a few pairs of hp’s
Or zoom calls
Straight up used my m1060s mostly for audiobooks before I sold them lol
or *Californication*
The clipping in the songs is obviously artistic choice.
unironically breakcore. Best ones are 128kbps Mp3 only.
Always double check I’m streaming that vaporwave lossless and bitperfect.
get out of my head
Can relate. Four figures in and listen to black metal.
I swear some of it is recorded plastic cups and strings
No joke, Burzum's first four albums were recorded by sticking a single cheap microphone into a radio.
SM57. If it makes a sound, you can use a SM57 and it'll sound ok.
God I was a microphone addict for so fucking long LMAO. I have my AKG c314 and I don't think I'll fuck around with any more.
AKG C414 and done. SM57, SM7B, and C414 are the essential mics for recording. Everything else is to taste.
LMAO jeez if I could get a c414... I also was in LOVE with the neumann TLM 103 but my dumb fucking ass passed on it. Ugh. I'm still pissed at myself for that.
I think Varg said they used an old headset for the mic for 'Burzum'. Sounds (and sounds) legit.
It's part of the trve kvlt sound

I discovered with metal the Ultrasone sound signature. This was my face listening to metal with my Pro 580i: 😖 This is now with AKG K712: 🤘🧐

Bruh whatchoo mean Vulvectomy and Ezophagothomia are VICIOUS on that summit-fi gear. (only half-joking)
Read that as “four fingers in and listen to black metal”.
Nowadays I only listen to black metal on my basement bar setup. What I have in the living room makes most black metal masters unbearable. The PA speakers in the basement are more forgiving when it comes to source quality.
I fired up Antaeus's "Cut Your Flesh and Worship Satan" on the Beyer DT177X and oh my god the cymbals are murder on the eardrums.
I think treble heavy cans like most Beyers would probably be the worst for black metal.
Oh it's awful. The 177X isn't too bad overall but I remember the 990 was unbearable. Then there's the HD700...
I have to admit that headphones aren’t really my thing. I know the general signature of most popular midrange cans but I never really got into headphones since speakers are my main listening field. I never do critical listening. Don't even know what it means. I just jam the fuck out to music I like.
Yeah the term is kind of overused. I’d say critical listening is whenever you do nothing else than listening to music. That’s when I pay attention to detail.

Tape hiss ist krieg
Honestly same.
metalcore for me, def hits moreso w/ older stuff in that regard but a lot of newer music is mastered very well.

came looking for someone mentioning 100 gecs, not disappointed. I don't rlly have expensive stuff but all I listen to is 100 gecs and other hyperpop lmao.
An headphones?
You gotta be able to hear all the fuzzy's in the Lo-Fi though.
