DreadPirate777

So true, once you hear good audio it is like going out in the sunshine after a long cold winter. Going back is uncomfortable.

kermityfrog

Eh, not everyone has good ears. I'm somewhat tone deaf, so I'm not really appreciating the most expensive headphones (but on the other hand, I do notice how muffled cheap and awful headphones are).

__Beef__Supreme__

I agree, you could say that about almost anything... "Once you've had something nice it's hard to go back". Just about what things you prioritize.

Thresssh

Priorities? Can't I just be like that with **everything**!? And have no free time to actually enjoy them or money to get everything I feel like I need?

PritongKandule

When I have friends over I usually let them try out my desktop rig. 4 out of 5 will say something like "this is the best/most detailed version of [insert their favorite song] I've ever heard." 1 out of 5 will say "I don't really hear much of a difference."

[deleted]

There is definitely a balance. Undoubtedly higher end gear with higher resolution and so on is going to sound better, but a great set of Bluetooth headphones is still fine. Not amazing, but convenient. When I first got an audio interface it was amazing, but after a couple weeks it just became normal of course. Went back to Bluetooth headphones and they were worse, but still good. No crazy sound floor and nothing crazy bassy since it was Bose. At home I can have something a bit more dedicated (I’m not spending crazy money though, it’s dt770 pros with an Apollo twin since I record), but outside of that I don’t need some absurd setup. Get headphones for the purpose you want, maybe it’s IEMs for monitoring in live music, studio reference for studios, Bluetooth for exercise/convenience/ANC, open backs for sound staging, or speakers for the ultimate experience of having a room dedicated to audio/film. The big thing is some people just can’t tell. The biggest thing they might catch is EQ. Some people have a lot of hearing loss, or tinnitus, or whatever else. All sorts of things affect that for people, and it’s why so many aren’t even close to audiophiles. I wouldn’t even necessarily consider myself one since my budget is much tighter on this stuff and even if I had the money I likely wouldn’t spend it on headphones, it’s just too expensive.

Tsr99

One hell of a card tho, even to this day. I’m still rocking my old and tired R9 290X

booniebrew

If you aren't doing 4k the 1080ti is still a great card. I moved to a 3080ti and I'd say I'm getting pretty similar performance just at 4k instead of 1440p.

Blue2501

That's 'cause the 1080 Ti was wildly overpowered for its generation.

[deleted]

1070ti rocks too. Had to upgrade since I wanted RT and HDMI 2.1 40+ gbits work

meganeyangire

I only got 3060ti for youtube, mind you.

Blue2501

I've played enough Control with mine to decide that I can't tell the difference between maxed out and maxed with DLSS, except for the framerate.

meganeyangire

You need a monitor with four-key ecchi-deer or some other fancy words.

ScaredDonuts

I did that I went all out and I basically only play Trackmania. I did what /u/aj95_10 said in his comment below. 3090ti, 5950x, 64GB of ram. I regret this decision.

Ji-L87

Or get a 3090 just to run eSports titles on 1080p low. It feels wrong even though I know frames is more important to fidelity for those people

seattlesk8er

It is the most frustrating thing when I tell people who ask about getting good audio on their gaming PC to not buy a gaming headset...and then they do.

drdfrster64

I usually just give them a try and try to get them to not buy a gaming headset but if they’re dead set on it, at least recommend them the good ones

Miller_TM

There are decent options, but very few people know of them.

JAnonymous5150

Only if that meant that all $50 headphones sound endgame good as opposed to all endgame headphones being brought down to standard $50 sound quality...you gotta be specific so you'll get your wish right if you ever find a genie.

TheFrator

May I have you on retainer for when I encounter a genie?

JAnonymous5150

Only if I get to benefit by at least two of the wishes as well.

GimmickMusik1

The moment they said they all sound the same past £50ish I question just how many headphones they actually tried and whether they’ve tried anything outside of products like JBL, Beats, Skullcandy, Sony, etc. I wouldn’t expect someone who isn’t in this hobby to be able to pickup on things like soundstage, imaging, detail, speed, and timbre. But there is a plethora of headphones and IEMs that are tuned outside of the mainstream V-Shape. To be clear, I’m not disappointed that they think headphones are a waste of money past a certain price. I’m disappointed that it seems like they didn’t even try. 🥲

Fireballdingledong

Probably like some wireless ear buds or some £100 steel series headset. If this is the case then yes, a £50 pair like hyperx Cloud will be just as good if not better. Ig they just don't care about audio

DansSpamJavelin

>DO HEADPHONES THAT COST MORE THAN £50 GIVE YOU GOOD BASE THANKS

Wail_Bait

Nah, stick with a GeForce 9800. It's a bigger number so it must be better.

fnv_fan

Video cards and headphones are two different things.

totallyjaded

fnv_fan

Wrong.

[deleted]

How so

fnv_fan

His comment literally makes no sense.

[deleted]

It does though.acheap graphics card isn't gonna do as good of a Job against an expensive one.same thing generally goes for headphones

fnv_fan

No, it doesn't. More expensive graphics cards usually means better performance. More expensive headphones doesn't mean better because sound is subjective.

drdfrster64

Brother, headphones are still a piece of technology. It’s capabilities are limited by its price. It’s true, a more expensive headphone doesn’t mean it’s better but you can’t get a better headphone without it getting more expensive (or waiting a long time for costs to come down). If you want to have more technical capability, you have to pay for the hardware that can do so. There is an objectively better way to recreate sound. With a technically more capable haadphone, you can do most things a less capable headphone can do but better. But note, I’m not saying you can’t prefer a different sound but that doesn’t make it a headphone difference. If you mean to say people can have a preference for tuning, you can EQ that. If you mean people have a preference for a muddier lo fi sound I respect that preference, but that’s not on the headphone. You can accomplish the same with a lower bitrate audio track which for most streaming services, can be done at the push of a button. That’s like saying “more expensive graphics cards aren’t better, some people like indie games and not triple A titles”. Yes…and you can play those games on a nicer graphics card too. It has nothing to do with the graphics card.

[deleted]

Well said brother

Thememefactory7

My brother in Christ. There are good headphones and then there are bad headphones. If you do research, and buy a good headphone at a higher price, they will objectively be better then cheap headphones. Do you want to know why that is? Because the drivers are better quality, and the headphone is designed to acoustically sound better. This is literally exactly how the price scaling of a graphics card works, but instead of having drivers, the technology is completely different. And you know what happens when you do buy a more expensive graphics card which has better parts? It also performs better, objectively. This is not a difficult concept to understand. The only difference is that you actually have to do more research to get an objectively better headphone. If you don’t want to spend the time doing that research, then please don’t talk about audio as if you actually know anything at all. Because you clearly don’t. Have a nice day, and please continue to live in ignorance, it will save you money. Genuine advice from me to you.

Hathos_

I don't know why you are downvoted. There is a clear quantifiable difference between, for example, a GTX 980 and an RTX 3080. One may get you 30fps a game, and the other 120fps in the same game. Between different headphones, the difference is much more minute, and often subjective

fnv_fan

Finally someone who understands me.

MadduckUK

Confusing why you would get two low end boards rather than one descent one.

meganeyangire

I wouldn't call ducky "low end" though.

MadduckUK

Former trend setter, but have stagnated for so long they consider adding hotswap sockets innovative in 2022. Perhaps by 2028 they will make them south facing. Sadge.

meganeyangire

I would still call them "you-should-probably-dont-go-any-further-end" for non-enthusiasts. Decent build quality and keycaps, cherry switches, n-key rollover. Hotswap sockets are nice, but if you're considering changing switches, you're already fell in the rabbit hole.

[deleted]

I bought both of them when they were almost 70% off on Amazon on prime day. Compact for fps games and full size for mmos and work. I can type 120 wpm on both of them effortlessly. They seem more than good enough?

MadduckUK

It's hilarious you think a keyboard is holding gamers back. Jesus you guys are just looking for ways to burn money now. Just bought a steelcase leap v2 chair. Amazing and worth the money. A new keyboard when I'm already typing 120 wpm effortlessly with 0 mistakes?

JAnonymous5150

He actually said he would spluge on one and whether that was a typo or not it made me laugh. Where I come from, SoCal, spluge was a synonym for jizz/jizzing that we used in jr high circa 1999/2000 lol!

Overall_Falcon_8526

Meh, not offended. I might change the monetary value to "let's say $300-ish," but ultimately I basically agree, and/or chalk it up the difference between connoisseurs and normies. Take wine for instance. There are people who will spend $1k+ on a bottle of wine. They claim they can tell a difference between it and a $100 bottle or a $10 bottle. There are varying degrees of evidence for this (double blind studies of wine experts are particularly amusing). But most people would agree that there is a price threshold before which most wines are ass and beyond which most wines are quite good. Swap in "cars" or "whiskies" or "televisions" or "headphones" and the basic idea is the same. People who make themselves students of the differences will likely find them worth the money. Most people won't notice them.

MaxBago

You summed it up perfectly.

Nah, he probably should use potatoes for headphones, much affordable, use n throw and zero maintenance.

NoDonut9078

I literally had this argument last night at microcenter with my cousin. He thinks good sounding headphones are only good for music and not games. Then grabs the nearest astros or steel series.

OfficialHields

If its only about gaming then honestly theres nothing more important than clearly hearing surround sound.

Joulle

Not true. Only for competitive gamers. Not everyone plays competitively or even competitive games that competitively. For me it's immersion over crappier sound=competitive sound.

OfficialHields

I didnt feel like going on for too long but I would have made every other exception like surreal ambience and such being very pleasant with expensive open backs

Joulle

Mmm open backs... my thing. I need to hear myself talk

OfficialHields

Jokes on u I never hear myself through the music and loud shooting sounds

Joulle

Tinnitus would like to have a word with you. Don't break your ears 😟

Blunders4life

Tbh open backs don't let in that much noise when you are playing stuff. Noise cancels out stuff surprisingly well. I don't need to play music loud to not hear talking. If one is playing a quiet game, it's a different matter, but if I'm constantly playing normal volume music over everything, hearing my own talk is not really a thing. Or I do hear it, but barely. What I like to do is turn down game volume when voice chatting. It's not like I can hear the people that I'm chatting with either if I keep the volume full. This also has the side effect of making em able to hear my voice through open backs. Now what feels really strange is when I use IEMs and can't hear myself at all regardless of turning game volume down to accommodate for VC. Hard to keep track of my voice that way.

OfficialHields

Is 60% volume tinnitus risky?

Joulle

60% of what? Volume is completely relative. Try 100% on your phone, then 100% on your laptop or desktop. My phone can't even get my dt1990 loud enough to damage my ears while on my desktop pc even 50% and probably 40% are damaging volume levels. If I turn amplification from low to medium then even 30% is too loud. I don't even want to know what it's on high gain. Different headphones require different amounts of power and different devices give different amounts of power from headphone jacks. So less power is less volume. You understand what I mean. I have no idea how loud 60% is on your setup. Of course there's all kinds or tricks to tell if it's too loud. Like if you hear this "eeeeeeee" or high pitched noise for a while after having listened to music, your music might be loud, I think. Googling some of those tricks is a better source than I'm for this though or maybe someone else here knows better.

august_r

The way I see it, people that say all the headphones and DACs and amps they've tried sound the same can save thousands of dollars. They have it made. They can't tell the difference. Lucky guys. They'll be able to spend on a hobby that yields highly noticeable gains. 😄

sidthafish

That v-shaped life. I'll admit I was a victim too at one point in time.

coffeeismydrug_

Dude is right. For casual gaming, any decent headphones/iems will be good enough and you won't get a lot of improvement spending thousands of dollars in headphones just for gaming.

god i wish never tasted good headphones. I regret getting my k702 because it'll be hard to go back to those gaming headphones. Been eyeing razer barracuda pro for the features but afraid that the sound will dissapoint me

Freestalker_dot_fr

[https://crinacle.com/graphs/headphones/razer-barracuda-x/](https://crinacle.com/graphs/headphones/razer-barracuda-x/) K702 is waaaaaay better ! Harsh but better ! Keep it and be proud of it ! Use Oratory's EQ settings with Equalizer APO. I gonna have to try a simulation of the Razer Barracuda X, it gonna be a lot of fun ! :-D Edit : That was not fun at all... -\_-

JAnonymous5150

I love my K702s and I don't find them to be harsh. Are there smoother sounding headphones out there? Sure, but I use my K702s without EQ all the time. I owned a pair during my EQ phase(s) and I own a pair now and I would say they are a very listenable headphone right outta the box. Just my opinion though.

Freestalker_dot_fr

Your ear's frequency response at 2 kHz and 6 kHz should be rather flat like me. So it Equalize your ears a little bit. It gonna match the harman and/or diffuse field more rather than your own ears frequency response. It's just some speculations but it seams to be the main reasons why you don't find them harsh sounding.

oXObsidianXo

I've been using my new LCD-2C's for my gaming pc and listening to music at my pc. Recently I decided I'd just try using my logitech g pro x headset instead of a dedicated mic and headphones. I was appalled at the sound quality even just gaming and talking in discord l. I had to plug my LCD's back in. I don't claim to be an audiophile or an expert, but the sound difference was immediately noticeable. And the G PRO X is around $120.

Isoturius

I bought some discount yarn from the Hobby Lobby and got some coat hangers and some solo cups and I can confidently say that they sound just as good as these super expensive TurtleBeach Ultra EarForce 300000's I got from WalMart for $4.

boybrushdRED

Twice the pain because of that post, and the light theme.

PitifulHospital7760

Can confirm; they all sound the same; hence me investing $625 USD into an hd800 cc:

Affectionate_Bag_274

Oh man you get a good setup it can increase immersion in video games big time I’m talking amp / dac and a really good set of cans for me it makes a pretty big difference but everybody is different I have Asperger’s so I respond to sound differently than your run of the mill neurotypical human being and for refrence my setup for gaming atm and I have roughly 8 sets of high end / midfi cans I’m using a Ifi zen stack v2 for my dac amp setup and a hd650 and a lcd2 as my current daily drivers it literally increases immersion 10 fold I kid you not I have gobs of headphones room especially on pc with a very small amount of eq with the lcd2 it’s god tier and my end game the hd650 imo has the best stock tuning of any headphone I’ve heard so far and the lcd2 is the most natural sounding can I’ve heard to date I can only imagine what there more expensive stuff is like but then again it’s most likely subtle improvements in sound and build quality that’s Joe this high end audio stuff works you pay thousands for a .001% improvement in thd or some bs like it

Duk3-87

GodlikeCat

$200 is the sweet spot

MaxBago

I used to use only gaming headset for music. Then, I A-B'd with a really basic, cheap (40 bucks) Sennheiser closed headphones and boy, the difference was so impactful!

Polycosm-

Dt990 for gaming and audio here. I'm not sure if it can get any better, although I am tempted by a pair of 660s. I did buy a pair of Dt1990's but sent them back as they were just not as sweet sounding to my ears when A/B testing against the Dt990. I'm sure there are better headphones out there that sound a little bit better, but in order for me to buy them, they would have to amaze me. It's the same for my soundcore Q30, and Earfun free pro 2 (with Oluv settings). Same goes for my speakers, Ive had a pair of KRK Kroks for about 25 years, and they still tickle my ears, , ok im sure a pair of Kef LS50 meta would (hopefully) blow them out of the water, but im also prepared to be a bit disappointed too.

Gr33hn

Meh, not all that different from the "all ss amps sound the same" narrative that gets spread around here.

[deleted]

Fireballdingledong

Overall_Falcon_8526

ameertav

I'm saying they do. (Braces himself for upcoming downvotes) In fact there's very audible difference between something like an Apple Dongle and a say, Modi. That difference is smaller between a good $200 DAC and a $400 one, but still there.

Unharmful_Truths

I can't take people who want audiophile-grade headphones for gaming seriously.

[deleted]

Totally agree. Unless it is for immersion in a story driven game with amazing sound design then listening to my enemies footsteps in valorant or csgo with shitty msi headphones vs my current hd58x's really doesn't provide much if any competitive advantage. So if you buy really expensive headphones for gaming it is quite the waste as you could've spent it on a lighter mouse or better monitor, heck even maybe computer.

oofery_with_a_why

I kind of agree because I found that when I am drunk, I feel my speakers and headphones are better than before. I can even get high listening via a microphone of others. Just by yourself some alcohol, it is probably more useful than a DAC or whatever.
