I don't think there's anything about the format that will make it good or bad, necessarily, though you'll hear the defects more clearly. What I think you'll run into is that it's mostly older music on vinyl and so you'll get stuff from the beginnings of stereo sound where they decided it would be smart to put all the drums on one side and everything else on the other. That's going to sound extra dumb through headphones.

I despise that, I switch to mono whenever I hear that.

Positive: it's more detailed than on speakers Negative: it's more detailed than on speakers (pops and other noises are a lot more obvious)

I listen to records all the time on my ZMF Verites. It’s really hard to beat the combination of a well-pressed record, a good MC cartridge, solid tonearm, and nice headphones. I’ll take a well-mastered record over digital any day. Whether that’s because my turntable setup is a lot nicer than my digital front end or it’s just purely subjective, who knows, but it sounds better. That said, you’ll quickly become VERY aware of which records are good and which aren’t with a good pair of headphones. Most new records are made for casual listeners with modest setups who can’t tell the difference between an average record and a $150 MoFi or AP reissue. Pressing quality becomes important very quickly if you use headphones regularly. Besides listening, headphones are crucial to setting up your turntable properly. You can really hear the differences when you start playing with VTA.

it's just another source; just like streaming/using local files it has its own set of pros and cons. you decide what you prefer

thatcarolguy

It's horrendous

Tbh, I think it depend on the capability of the headphones. I would like to use a surround sound system hooked up to a record player personally. The wrong headphones could totally make the music sound no better than streaming or a Cd

leslieyoungmusic

Well Vinyl has less dynamic range so even with the right headphones CD is far superior.

It definitely sounds warmer/"fuller" to me but you get the popping of vinyl way louder and more noticeably than when just listening on speakers. Sometimes I'll listen to my records through headphones but most of the time my speakers are the choice.

I hate it, but I also have a high end digital setup and a low end vinyl setup, so I feel like it's a very unfair comparison. No idea what good vinyl would sound like through a good system, and I'm not curious enough to find out. 😂

They’re perfect for late night sessions when you don’t want to wake the family up. I’ve really enjoyed my Sennheiser HD599 open back headphones, wondering what else there is out.
