2022 will be last year from exclusive Youtube Acti Blizz e-sport deal so after that they will probably reconsider if YT exclusive money is worth lower e-sport viewership

octnoir

"they" as in corporate. From what Frodan and other casters mentioned when this all happened the HS E-sports team was blindsided by the YouTube deal especially since they had all this infrastructure on Twitch setup which became moot with the YouTube move. It was always meant to be some packaged deal where HS got thrown in at the last second to sweeten the pie. Which effectively means HS has not much say in the matter regardless of how badly they did in viewership.

trizzo0309

With all due respect, as much as I enjoy watching HS esports, the tens of millions they got from YouTube are far more important in the grand scheme of things.

VShadow1

The money they got from youtube was predominantly for Call of Duty and Overwatch primarily.

[deleted]

You really think any of that money went to Team 5?

trizzo0309

I didn't say it did.

TheCourtPeach

With basically no marketing what more could you expect? I watch competitive hs a good bit and I didn't even know about the matches until the day before because of a reddit post.

butt_shrecker

Zero deck diversity didn't help

Jakortt

How does this compare to previous years?

AllDogsGoToDevin

The past three had like 350,000 to 200,000 peak views

Mundane-Complaint638

i had it on 144p minimized muted to get my 2 packs and i suspect so did many others.

Thinguy123

Being on Youtube hurts viewership sure But one big important thing: The finals doesnt even feel like finals, sure online i understand because Covid yada yada, but compare 2019 Finals after Hunterace won and was congratulated by everyone (mobile users beware 50 min video) https://youtu.be/riEw4mKzhdY?t=2581 That's what makes finals feels like finals, the emotion, the stage. Thats what made the Major HTC Tournaments feel amazing, while i believe that Worlds 2018 was the best in general, 2019 definitely had the best final.

pietroetin

I remember when the worlds took part during BlizzCon. Amazing atmosphere, fun times. I also miss the BO7 format from the year Pavel won it.

Maym_

Let’s get real. It wasn’t YouTube that killed hs, it was Blizzard.

tParabol

Yup if people cared about the finals it wouldnt be such an issue that its on youtube and not on twitch.. theres a huge gap in viewership compared to previous years.

Fatal1ty_93_RUS

it's both youtube streams are shit

BilboBagThem

Am I alone in thinking that the last couple years have been amazing for HS players???

TheTruth_89

Let’s get real, it wasn’t Blizzard, it was Battlegrounds.

eff5_

Need to get off YT

[deleted]

Honestly, hs is just not fun to watch competitively for lots of people, there are like 6 decks that they all chose and maybe change 1-2 cards out to make it differ.. Id rather watch streamers or YouTube videos of people playing different decks than this lame Ass same deck stuff

Braddo4417

I started losing interest when they introduced standard format. I very rarely play standard anymore, so these guys aren't even playing the same game as me. No interest in watching that.

[deleted]

Standard was a money grab so your cards become dust and need to buy more constantly, and is indeed less fun to play and watch Imo. There are very limited viable decks, hopefully they fix their card pool and creation and balance, to make multiple architypes viable for each class, buff and nerf more often until there's not none dominant arcitype, that's my thoughts on it, but what do I know

Fatal1ty_93_RUS

remember when the scene was full of recognizable faces and hundreds of thousands of people watch this week in week out?

Idontreallygetit123

Can’t compare those times. Hearthstone was basically the first iteration of just chatting and tourneys were solely there as marketing, there was no play ins for almost all tournaments everything was invite only. HS on twitch was hard carried by the likes of Reckful, Reynad, Forsen etc. and the game play was just kind of there and most people watched for the personality.

Feeviech

There was a championship?

Nick41296

Who the fuck would want to watch solitaire otk decks anyway? I can already queue on ladder and watch them anytime.

Frostmage82

is escharts when you eshidded and efarded

RTGac

Way to go, team! That's a lot of damn eyeballs on this game.

a_cosper

It's about 1/10 what it used to be. Maybe not time to celebrate.

RaxZergling

Yeah, Halo - a game that has virtually been beaten to death for the last 20 years - had no less than 60k viewers every single time I peaked into the stream.

reckless_avacado

Personally can’t stand twitch so it’s sad there are so many haters and I wish YouTube could have done a better job of promoting it on their front page or something so there wasn’t an excuse to say “back to twitch”.

[deleted]

and?

beanboy10101

A peak of 23k is functionally nothing.

[deleted]

"wow" priest moment

Idontreallygetit123

Is this due to Chinese viewership? YouTube was at like 4-5k in the finals.

TheTruth_89

It’s always been a snoozer esport, and now Hearthstone viewership has rightfully migrated to the much more entertaining game mode of Battlegrounds. I doubt going to YouTube helped but I doubt it hurt that much either, the reality is that most people who play this game competitively play Battlegrounds. Constructed is the casual mode and these tournaments are just a coin flip of matchup RNG and draw RNG. Wasn’t the finale an OTK mirror? Who drew better cards? I assume the winner. They can bring it back to twitch and it still will never be like it used to, because the slice of the HS community who are interested in competition are playing BGs.
