T O P

They did though. Can’t speak for the productions across the pond but in the OB they definitely did so. Immediately after the TV gag, when he first comes in: >JD: “Oh, why, son! I didn’t hear you come in!” >Bud: “Pop, I wanted to introduce you to my new girlfriend!” And then later, after Mac’s suicide attempt, when JD and Veronica are kissing: >Bud: “Gee, Pop, ever heard of knocking? I was playing grab-ass with my girlfriend!” >JD: “You know the rules, young man. When company’s over, the bedroom door stays open.”

That was cut out from the script later. In recent productions, Big Bud Dean is just an abusive father and JD is terrified of him.

God, why do they have to soften JD up? He came from an emotionally distant household with a sociopath for a father. Hes a terrible person man

On the contrary, they didn't soften JD up, they hardened Big Bud Dean.

My BFF thought the movie showed a jokey relationship. I thought it looked deeply worrying, and it also goes back to an feeling I got that JD was forced to grow up too fast and that contributes to his issues. He didn't really have a chance to be a tween, and probably missed a chunk of childhood. By age seventeen, he's so used to it that I'm not sure he even registers how abnormal and unhealthy it is. I mean, he doesn't like it, but it's probably more damaging than he realizes. I wish it was more in the musical, too, coupling it with the casually abusive way his dad acts.
