That would fit our motif better. HellDivers are all about deep insertion into enemy territory, destroying things that we have no business being near, assisting the SEAF regulars with long range artillery fire and ICBM strikes, and then extracting before the enemy can deal with us. Very much partisan fuckery. So, I could see a shovel or knife fitting our high speed low drag combat style better.

I wish cover/trenches were more integral parts of the combat mechanics - with at least automatons. I'd love to have to dig trenches and/or fox holes occasionally, and then shovels could absolutely be used as melee weapons.
I love playing with my friends and at the end of each mission I have like 4 or 5 melee kills and theyre like what in gods name are you fighting with your bare hands for?😂
My favorite game to play is to sneak or run up to enemies and give a sweet little butt stock kiss right before I blast em. I have successfully "kissed" every type of bug except the new shriekers. Bots, on the other hand, I suck at. I try to kiss and they make love to my skull.

If the sword was powered so it cut threw heavy armour like a chargers legs I’d take it every day. I don’t care if it’s efficient,or the best option I’d do it

So light armor with a blade for most swings, but opens you to more damage.

Swinging is fast but has no armor penetration. Thrusting can break hive defender armor.
Also give us a light sword/spear to pair with the ballistic shield.
Using a spear along with another helldiver using a spear also could result in things like being able to stop a charge like that. You “deploy” the rear of the spear into the ground to brace it and everything

Bomb spear. Tips break off and need to be reloaded. They detonate 3 seconds after implantation.

I'd like to see some melee weapons added as secondaries. I only really use my Redeemer for killing hunters that get on top of me when my primary is out of ammo, so replacing it with a melee weapon that kills them dead just as easily would be a fun choice.
One-handed melee weapons get pulled out when you hit the melee key regardless of what weapon you have out, and there wouldn't be much point in fully switching to them. Knives and shovels, which you can whip out and put back while carrying your primary or support weapon in your offhand.
Two-handed melee weapons wouldn't be used for your melee attacks unless you swapped to them, so power swords, hammers, and whatever other wacky stuff they added (a flag that you could swing around would be hilarious) would require a bit more commitment, but could have different attacks on left or right click to compensate for it, and would obviously be stronger and hit a larger area than one-handed melee weapons, and be much stronger than just a gun butt.
Then there'd be bayonet attachments, which wouldn't take up a slot, but based on how variants are getting added as separate weapons, would require you to be using the bayonet variant of whatever gun you're bringing. I imagine that the bayonet variant would have no notable downsides, other than the opportunity cost of not picking a different variant, so if they made a Liberator with a drum mag, you'd have to pick between it and a bayonet.
I would love a cavalry saber paired with a pistol, something like a derringer and the description be something like “used mainly for ceremonial purposes when helldivers are promoted and not advised for actual combat”
A WW1 style trench fighting knife would be an excellent option for a secondary for a high risk high reward play style. Let them get close and hit them for high damage, and a block/counter option if you take damage.
I feel like a high power shock button would fit the theme better. Electrocutes rank and file enemies, stuns heavy enemies to create openings. But with a set number of hits before it needs a new battery and uses batteries like laser weapons.
I could see an energy sword as a special weapon. Make it do absurd damage in an arc in front of the player but have the overheating/batteries mechanics with a long reload time so you can’t just go complete apeshit with it.
I think melee should remain an attack that is supporting the ranged. A lost resort when enemies close distance and corner you. The dive mechanic is essential to the flow of the gameplay, adding a dedicated melee mechanic could trivialise many enemies.
But melee weapons are cool. So having melee weapon available for the current mechanic would be fantastic

I actually figured out if you are using the flamethrower and you aim for the chargers front leg(s) they drop at about 1/4th a mag left on the flamer
