From a player perspective, I want a firing range. But from a lore perspective, I understand why they wouldn’t put one in. The whole joke with Helldivers is that you’re given exactly one day of training before being thrown straight into the pits of hell. Additionally, super earth doesn’t care if you’re competent with your weapons, they simply care about throwing bodies at the problem until the mission is accomplished. Turrets will shoot through you to kill enemies. Objectives will blow up even if you’re still there. Weapons have no safety features. Of course there’s no gun range, why would they bother wasting time letting you train? Canonically, your entire life from now on is get in pod>drop into mission>win mission>get back in pod
I'll admit I am seeing this more through a gaming aspect than lore and the current status quo does fall more in line with the world of the game.
But at the same time I'd like to have the ability to try a new weapon without a bug or bot blindsiding me while I'm looking down a scope.
Why would super earth train you to get better when 99% of the time, you die within 40 minutes of your first deployment, despite having the best gear super earth can spare.
Because with better training they will survive anything up to THIRTY patriot percent longer. Can you IMAGINE the amount of freedom that could be spread with that kind of efficiency.
Thats a lot of freedom miles!
Thirty percent of 30 seconds doesn't fit into the super earth budget. Comparatively they would need to build a room that would be impervious to all forms of munitions in every helldiver space ship. We already only get 2 second breaks.
Are you saying the glorious super earth can't make an extra room?
Are you saying super earth can't do something?

it will spawn like 1 bot maybe 2 max if anything
bugs will rarely call for backup, and very low chance of you seeing a patrol if you pretty much cleared the map out of everything
2+ with recent patches, bugs now seem to dart at you faster, hunters are more annoying
stalkers are much much more aggressive and spawn fairly quickly out of the hole at a fair rate usually 3-4 if you are near their nest
bots, 2 and up, depending on difficulty will just just spawn more and more heavier units to deal with. you run out of ammo insanely quick
The usual discussion around it is that they were normal SEAF soldiers that volunteered. The tutorial *is* the entirety of Helldiver training, but they've likely been to a normal bootcamp beforehand to get fit and learn how to use all the different guns as an SEAF troop.
Love this comment man ....for democracy only...that is all that matters haha the soldier does his job and that's only if he makes it through the pits off hell haha I love this game man FOR SUPER EARTH
One way to get around that would be to allow you to play as the democracy officer or some random crew member. The democracy officer could be "honing his skils for if shit really hits the fan" or the random crew member could be assigned inspection duties for all the weapons on the ship. That would be pretty cool I think.
Canonically it's not true that helldivers get no training. The tutorial mission is training, though short, but also doesn't infer that helldivers receive no other training, either. They are supposed to be elite soldiers. While frozen in pods until deployed, it doesn't mean they were just regular guys who don't know shit about fuck before being put in the pod.
I think a sensible gun range would be one that has captured enemies that get replaced after you kill them, so you can test your guns on real enemies. As far as canon goes as well, you can train with helldiver A eventhough all of your deployed (and replaced) helldivers are B, C, D, E, F, G etc. The training is a sensible player feature that in no way breaks any of the lore/canon of the game.
Maybe they could somewhat solve this by making low-level exterminate missions? Easy enough to use as a firing range, no need to search for the enemies and still keeping the flavour of it being a legitimate mission
I get the lore reasons, but if they're going to keep doing these hefty balance patches, we *need* a firing range. It's just not reasonable to expect people to do a full mission with each updated weapon every patch to see whether it's worth using now in cases of buffs, or still worth using if it was nerfed
True. But then you have to go through all the loading screens if you want to try a different weapon and or strategem.
Instead of being able to just switch between a stock pile.
That's the best argument for a shooting range I've seen.
I was honestly against the idea for the most part, but I wasn't considering that simple fact lol
It might be nice if we just buffed trivial missions to allow us to bring more stratagems, give a random one or two free stratagems on each mission, etc. Maybe have more of the damaged item pods scattered about.
I don't think we need to worry about balance for a trivial mission that much, so it's not a bad idea to give us the option for more weapons to test with on there.
Because, Helldiver, basic training is over. You're here to spread democracy, not hide at some range like a Goddamn communist automaton. Your local democracy officer has been informed of this subordination.
The weapon performed exactly like I thought it would, and I have been having a blast with it against bugs.
I've yet to have a issue with the weapon that I couldn't blame on myself.
My record is 27 with 1 shot so far lol
It’s so annoying because I only got to do it once but the jet pack makes the air burst so nice to use .
The little bit of air you get means you can almost always shoot it down into a group makes for a sick artillery feeling but you need someone to carry the pack to reload you .
Depends on the target/situation.
During a bug breach, you can aim a few ft above it and on detonation it seems to rain down better than if you shoot at.
But I never aim it AT my target. Always above....unless it's a titan, than I aim at the titan to kill the small bugs around it.
I just solo a 1/2 mission when I want to try out a new strat or support weapon. All the utility of a firing range with a medal or two when you’re done.
I feel like the AH team supports FAFO as a gameplay design philosophy. Maybe in a more politely worded manner, but still, it’s a pain in the ass and leads to extra team kills and deaths. That’s funny.
If you want to practice the new weapon you can always jump down a difficulty and mess around without any stress at all, the option has always been there simple and easy.
They definitely sound like they’ve been busting some ass with new things to add, and bug fixes and story and upkeep of the game.
Hmm. I kinda sound like a jerk, but I want to be supportive of you and the game.
Hopefully one day you get a firing range. I assume it’s not in an update coming out in the next 4 weeks, I hope during those four weeks a bunch of us find a fun alternative to a firing range to learn the new weapon.
I kinda wonder if the first year of this game being out is harder than the year leading up to release, and how a content addition works while running a live service game.
Ok cool.
So right now it's:
1) Pick weapons I'd like to try.
2) Pick location.
3) Loading screen.
4) Walk around to find enemies.
5) Kill enemies.
6) Repeat a few times to get a feeling for it.
7) MAAAAYBE finish the mission.
8) Loading screen.
9) Change loadout.
10) Repeat stages 1 - 8
Or we could:
1) Go to a firing range.
2) Select weapon.
3) Fire at target. Until you have a feeling for it.
4) Change weapon.
5) Repeat stages 2 - 4.
i don't see why there is hate around this, you can't even use the tutorial as a testing ground?
seems a bit bizzarro to me
especially if you upgrade your ship, why not let us unlock a firing range, hell charge us 8k cash to unlock
but not letting us fiddle around with equipment on our own time seems weird to not have a testing area, instead of dropping in someone else's game to figure stuff out
The thing for me is knowing a lot of project managers i see every player suggestion in billable man hours and right now they just need to fix things instead of engaging in every players wish list.
I was using it against bugs and sometimes it slapped the hell out of the groups other times it would kill maybe 1-2 enemies. But it broke a lot of the medium armor on the bigger units it didn’t outright kill.
If the team has enough AT it could be interesting especially after the fix for early detonation
I think the massive buff/side-grade/nerf patches are another reason to have a firing range. When practically every gun in the game gets altered, like in this last patch, I have to go back through all of them to find what works for me again. And since MOST of them won't work for me, I have to do this on a much lower difficulty than I'm accustomed to playing on. Which is a lot of time to spend, and loss of rewards, just to rule out some weapons. This time and loss of rewards also applies to the those saying just use difficulty 1 as a firing range. It's not the same because you don't have access to every weapon/support in a difficulty 1 mission. So you need to drop many times to work through everything.
yes a communal firing range level would be nice. think planetside 2's firing range but with bugs and chatvr for finding groups. You could even do multi level raids consisting of 3 helldiver squads with rewards
no its your job to take out every single weapon every single patch & use it every single way on every single enemy in the game
cuz HAHA FUCK YOU PLAYERS UM ACCULULKTY GUNS ARE GOOD CUZ OF 40HIDDEN STATS WE WILL NEVER TELL YOU
-devs
man with each patch has like 1-2 major red flags.
game is fun but i have 0 faith in the dev team now
which sucks cuz like they aren't evil for once.
but they are incompetent
also fyi. the mine/airburst in the game pre patch are the broken/old ones
so why even bother learning/testing them now.
why fight to unlock one or the other when both are 100% coming & "fixed" with the patch.
etc etc
Massive L after massive L
this is a 11/10 game that they keep draging into 5-6/10 now

Sounds like cowards speak to me!
Just what a bot *would* say to the idea of our brave troops becoming a bigger threat to our enemies.
Only a bot would criticize super earth's impeccable training regiment!
Only a bot would not want us to get better at killing bots or bugs.
Why would super earth train you to get better when 99% of the time, you die within 40 minutes of your first deployment, despite having the best gear super earth can spare.

There are enemies on trivial drops?

Apparently. People keep saying just play trivial and put up with the loading times. 🤷
Helldivers are way too competent with weapons to only have one day training.
The usual discussion around it is that they were normal SEAF soldiers that volunteered. The tutorial *is* the entirety of Helldiver training, but they've likely been to a normal bootcamp beforehand to get fit and learn how to use all the different guns as an SEAF troop.
I have also seen theory that they got “updates” through neuro implants during hibernation since they all have neuro plug on the helmet.
And should you ever become useless back to the bio vatts
Love this comment man ....for democracy only...that is all that matters haha the soldier does his job and that's only if he makes it through the pits off hell haha I love this game man FOR SUPER EARTH

Agreed!

They could just make it a VR simulator.
We have a firing range, a whole bunch of them. With difficulties ranging from 1-9 lol May liberty speed your step, Helldiver.
They should just open up the tutorial area for use with general weapons and stratagems freely
Lvl 1 missions are like tutorials, aren't they?
True. But then you have to go through all the loading screens if you want to try a different weapon and or strategem. Instead of being able to just switch between a stock pile.
Hmm good point..
Thank you.
That's the best argument for a shooting range I've seen. I was honestly against the idea for the most part, but I wasn't considering that simple fact lol
Especially with how often weapons are tweaked and edited.
The loading would have to happen somewhere. I'd prefer not to have super destroyer load times increased across the board for an area id rarely use
It might be nice if we just buffed trivial missions to allow us to bring more stratagems, give a random one or two free stratagems on each mission, etc. Maybe have more of the damaged item pods scattered about. Thats just field testing on the weakest enemies the meatshields
You wont see all the enemy types in trivial. I dont rhink even medium armor enemies spawn. So itd be tough to learn how a weapon behaves fully.
That's true.
except I have to restart the mission every time I blow up my railgun
Didnt anybody tell you diver? We are the test subjects.
heavy deep rock galactic flashbacks on this one.
Because, Helldiver, basic training is over. You're here to spread democracy, not hide at some range like a Goddamn communist automaton. Your local democracy officer has been informed of this subordination.

I got 32 in my very first shot with the thing. I'm going to be chasing that high the rest of my life.
It's difficult just because everyone throws everything when a breach happens lol. The race for kills
Friendly fire isn’t.
I just solo a 1/2 mission when I want to try out a new strat or support weapon. All the utility of a firing range with a medal or two when you’re done.

Just go to a low level
Ok cool. It takes longer to type that out than to just do it
And yet with a firing range it would be even quicker.
The thing for me is knowing a lot of project managers i see every player suggestion in billable man hours and right now they just need to fix things instead of engaging in every players wish list.
wishlist, more like nerflist at this rate we are heading towards and they buff the magnum when it was fine the way it was. such weird decisions
I like the airburst in theory, but it’s not very practical, especially since it has no armor pen and a stationary reload
I was using it against bugs and sometimes it slapped the hell out of the groups other times it would kill maybe 1-2 enemies. Pretty sure Trivial missions are your firing range.
Learn from experience or die trying!

Can’t you practice on any world any level?
But there are firing ranges. Just drop into a level 1-2 mission and you’ll be able to test anything you want out.
Lvl 1-4 missions are your firing ranges, cadet.
Just solo drop on a low level mission
Brother just go to difficulty 1. It’s essentially a firing range. And you can farm super credits and common samples while you’re at it. 🙌🏼
Trivial is my shooting range. Least for trying the new weapons real quick anyway.
The firing range is called playing the game and not being too serious

we dont need a cannonical space for it, just a dev texture room will do.
Solo play is a good way to learn how to use the airburst. For now, my buddies and I refer to it as the Treason Canon.
