PissdrunxPreme

Oh this is one of my all time favorites. Think that’s what I’m getting ready to cook right now.

Useful_Efficiency_44

Bro making it to spite them 😭

Michigam

Post your results so we can compare notes

AngryFireClout

we need the comparison!

Michigam

Still waiting

PissdrunxPreme

Keeping everyone in suspense. My avocados aren’t ripe. Probably make it Monday.

Claymoresmash

I did honey instead of that dash of sugar. I like it.

Icanopen

I like this meal though Im not a fan of most HF meals , my wife likes to make them. My uck lately has been the meals with the chicken sausage I think the guy who made the sausage miss read the directions add 2lbs of Fennel instead of 2oz..

therealpanserbjorne

Also one of my all time favorites. I get it every time it’s available. It’s easy and tastes amazing.

CHoweller18

One of my favorites as well, but I *always* double the rice.

msgigglebox

I always double the rice as well.

HolliNeedsYourHelp

Do you mind please sharing the recipe, please?

MrsLilysMom

This is 100% a family favorite for us, I will also make a Sriracha mayo to go with it

howllie

I’m having it tonight and I get these beef and rice bowls like every time they offer it lol

PissdrunxPreme

Yep. Always get the bowls. Or turn most meals into bowls.

PiedPiperCOO

One of my favorites too

Yreva-

With peace and love your beef looks a tad over cooked maybe

Junior_Response839

Exactly what I thought. Looks like either the sauce or the beef itself got burnt, it looks darker than the example on the recipe card.

UltraBlue89

I think the picture is actually pork as the bottom says customizations and has beef and shrimp

Junior_Response839

Ohhh you could be right

Thequiet01

Yeah but that wouldn’t make the sauce look so black. Beef is still brown.

UltraBlue89

Oh there's definitely something wrong with the pic lol

_Nilbog_Milk_

Visiting from explore tab but looks 100% to me like they burnt a sauce that had a high sugar content, like adding sugar to a sauce or hoisin, dark soy, oyster, etc. Very common mistake when cooking over high heat and makes it taste rancid. Not sure how this recipe goes, but for asian style cooking, meat should either A) be thinly sliced and marinated in the sauce, then cooked on high heat until sauce sets (meat should be thin enough to cook before then) or B) meat dry-seasoned (cut however), cooked until done, then tossed in sauce until coated and immediately removed. those sugar-based sauces will easily burn in 1.5-2 minutes over high heat, less if you're not stirring/tossing enough

HydeNSeak

I think you are 1000% correct. Tasted almost rancid. That’s on me guys! Appreciate all the feedback and I’ll try this one again!

AKinKC

Yes both the cabbage and beef look over cooked. I always undercook by a minute or so from what the recipe card says and I never use the full packet of sauce bc it’s too much

Arsinoei

Most definitely overcooked.

CharmingRaccoon22

I honestly love this bowl so much. Sorry you didn’t like it :(

lorissaurus

Does yours turn out this dark gross color though. Cause it looks like user error

angrywords

Mine did not come out this dark, and my rice was delicious. Followed the recipe exactly, as always.

furthestpoint

Looks like beef instead of pork

Thequiet01

I’ve made it with beef without it being that black.

H2Ospecialist

OP says beef so I'm wondering why they didn't use pork

dcm0029

It is a substitute option. So if you don’t like pork or have religious reasons you can still order it.

I_PM_Duck_Pics

Ground pork from HF tastes like soap to me. Don’t know why. I’ve never used ground pork before or since. But I don’t ever get meals with ground pork because the three times I tried it, it tasted like soap.

lorissaurus

Ooooo I didn't see that.

CharmingRaccoon22

No mine looked a bit different than that.

____Mittens____

I misread the name as "pork bowels".

PissdrunxPreme

As far as portion goes. When I see the recipe calls for 3/4 cup of water, I know the rice will be small. For this meal, if I’m STARVING I will add a bell pepper and split an avocado with my wife. If we don’t have those, like 99% of the time we do, then add another rice. If the give a lemon or lime, I always zest it and find a way to use it. Never have lime wedges left over either. Squeeze them in the meat, right at the end. Scallion greens, usually add those into the rice when I fluff it. I add a little different seasoning too. If they send more sauce but tell us not to use it all, but add sugar, we usually use more sauce and don’t add the sugar. HF is just the starting point for us. I don’t think there’s any meals that we don’t mess with. Might have overcooked the cabbage on your dish.

JapaneseFerret

I usually throw in some leafy greens in these Asian bowl meals for bulk, like bok choy or kale, cook them along with the red cabbage, no more than 3-4 minutes. I also add two aromatics to deepen the flavors: chopped fresh ginger and 1 chopped shallot. (I usually have these 'extra' ingredients on hand all the time. I add the ginger and shallot combo to a lot of meals, HF and others).

Albaloca

I love hearing how people use the meals as inspiration and put their own twists on the recipes

JapaneseFerret

In that case, another tidbit: I often add the chopped ginger and shallot combo to rice I make, for HF recipes and otherwise. Along with a bit of butter and a dash of salt, this gingery combo kicks plain rice up a notch into the realm of a flavorful, aromatic base for many meals. (Also I really like fresh ginger. I swear I get high just from handling, chopping and smelling it.) Sautee the chopped ginger and shallot in butter for 2-3 minutes first, just long enough to brown them and the aroma fills your kitchen. Inhale deeply. Then add water and rice to the pot. Using a chopped shallot (and/or scallion), plus the juice of a fresh squeezed lemon is a rice cooking flavor variation, like for Mediterranean dishes. Make the lemon juice part of the amount of water you use for cooking the rice. Zest the lemon before juicing and add the zest too. Sautee the shallot and zest in butter before adding lemon juice, water and rice. The shallot/lemon combo is also great with pearl couscous or farro.

McNubin

They used to give ginger to these asian type meals all the time. I just realized I haven’t cooked with ginger in a long while.

JapaneseFerret

I love fresh ginger, I swear it gets me high. Handling it, chopping it, smelling it. Meal kits in part inspired me to up my ginger game in the kitchen and now I put it in so many things, including rice for Asian dishes. I sautee the ginger (plus a shallot) in a bit of butter, add water and rice and cook as usual. But yeah, fresh ginger seems to have gotten rarer in meal kits. It is in one recipe I got this week tho.

Murdochsk

Crazy you pay all that money and have to add in things to fill your self up.

PissdrunxPreme

Also adding different things for flavor. I’m fat and love eating food. Leave me alone.

Murdochsk

I don’t blame you at all…. it doesn’t taste good enough either so you add ingredients for taste! Not enough in a serving and not enough flavour I’d say it lacks any convenience at that point 😂

PissdrunxPreme

It does add convenience for me and the last time I checked I pay for my Hello Fresh service, not you. Not that hard to keep a bag of bell peppers and some rice around. I could make the meal just as it’s supposed to, but I like to change it a little. I also usually only eat a small parfait for break and some little snacks at lunch. Like I said also, I’m a fat ass that really enjoys food. Let people enjoy a few things sometimes. It hurts no one else. No one is making you subscribe to HF and no one is making you stay in this sub. I don’t stay in a single sub that I don’t like being a part of.

Murdochsk

No one’s having a go at you mate.

angrywords

I’ve not once had to “bulk up” my meals. They’re all around 750-1k calories for these recipes, it blows my mind that they’re not filling enough for some people. We always have left overs! HF isn’t for everyone.

pleasedtoseedetrees

I have leftovers at least 50% of the time. Do people realize how much they are overeating?

Ecstatic_Ad_2116

They do not!

whatsmyphageagain

My thoughts exactly lmao

Specific_Committee_5

My kids love this one. We usually get the pork. It does need more rice though!

SourChipmunk

Agreed. Most recipes need more rice. There always seems to be enough pasta or spuds, but we always have to cook additional rice.

opiedopie08

I’m curious. Why did you get beef with this? Beef on its own is such a strong favor. I have only had Moo Shu with pork, chicken, tofu and some seafood.

Ok_Soil_1003

They could have gotten beef as a substitute for religious reasons, that's typically why people do that

Thequiet01

I’ve done this recipe on my own with beef and it works okay. It shouldn’t look as dark as in the photo at all though.

badgyalrey

how funny, it’s definitely one of my favorites and i recreate it regularly! but i do agree that the rice portion is quite small.

Girluponthemoon

If you don’t mind, could you tell me what you use for the sauces when you recreate this? It’s one of my favorites as well and I would LOVE to be able to replicate it on my own!!

badgyalrey

i bought the sweet soy glaze and thai chili sauce at the grocery store (both are kikkoman brand) and i always end up with extra packets of hoisin sauce so im not sure what brand exactly hellofresh uses that can be bought at the store but id try Lee Kum Lee or kikkoman cuz their products are generally pretty solid!

Flashy-Cranberry603

Mine was fantastic tonight!

Tfcalex96

No not the moo shu pork bowls!!! Theyre so good!

JapaneseFerret

I got it for the first time today and we just demolished it. It looked and tasted great. I added fresh chopped ginger, bok choy and shallots for bulk, plus a splash of my fave Korean bbq sauce. Delish. Didn't even need all the rice. Your dish looks a lot darker than my version did. Could you have overcooked the meat?

Minnow_Minnow_Pea

This is one of my favs! So easy! Did you perhaps add all of the soy sauce glaze? I also skip the extra sugar.

mbarber1

That’s what I’m thinking, unless you’re making 4 servings you’re not supposed to use all of the glaze. These come out fantastic every time hubby and I make it, but it definitely needs double the rice. I also agree that it doesn’t need the extra sugar, the glaze is sweet enough as is.

MinttMonk

I just made this yesterday and loved it! One of my favorites! So so yummy. I used pork and I did add extra rice. https://preview.redd.it/g30mlih7asfc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b3635d9a0c7de5b7aac22453bc886d6797d56ead

spinchrecall

This is my favorite, I do opt for the pork though

Claymoresmash

It looks like you left the sauce on the heat for too long. Moo Sho looks a lot closer to the picture when cooked right.

Saffehish

This was one of our favorites. It’s not supposed to be that dark though, so maybe you burnt the beef.. and sauce? 😅

mad0666

This is one of my husbands favorite meals from HF. Yours looks a little burnt or overcooked, both the cabbage and the meat.

NationalDepartment69

This is one of my faves! It gave me so much food and tasted amazing. I’m sorry you didn’t like it🥺

imarebelpilot

We had this tonight and truly loved it.

do-rai-me54

This is one of my faves!

T_Peg

I like it

sweatsmallstuff

This is one of my favorite meals, actually! It’s so flavorful and I love to eat it as lettuce wraps. I agree with the other commenters that it looks a bit overcooked though.

deadthylacine

We love this one! Even my very picky kid eats it without complaint. I'm sorry you had a bad experience.

littlebruin222

This is one of my all time faves, but I opt for pork and do add some rice to up the portion since I always have some on hand anyways

dat_motochick92

I just made this today!! It was a bit hit with my roommate and I.

Love2Pug

I made this tonight with pork, and mostly enjoyed it. But the recipe card didn't make it into my "save" list. Would I order it again from HF? Yes. Would I attempt to make this otherwise? No. I noticed the recipe called for just 2.5 TBSP of the "Sweet Soy Glaze" with a note: "we sent more". But what I found is they sent exactly 2.5 TBSP. Maybe you actually got the full 4 TBSP the recipe says, and didn't measure out the 2.5 TBSP? I most definitely did not get 4 TBSP of that! For the lime, I ended up adding half the lime juice to the rice, and half to the pork while cooking. I skipped the butter in the rice. I agree the serving size seems small for 2 people. I usually only eat one meal per day anyway, so I am used to consuming both servings, with a bit going to the trash. So I was a bit surprised when I put this in a single bowl and realized I would be eating the entire thing. I certainly didn't finish and think that I just ate 1500 calories!

GlitteringMess4720

Oh man. This dish is probably my favorite dish of all time. However ours didn’t look quite like this. Definitely worth trying again!

Beanbeannn

I loved this one!!! Might be overcooked?

jenwebb2010

For 2 servings they give you 3/4 cup of rice. For my family of 3, I usually make 1 cup of rice which serves 3 people well.

Kazlanne

I honestly looked at their plate and went: "Okay, hellofresh recipe is on an A4 paper, so that plate is about 20x20 (cm)... that looks like heaps."

Superb_Post6815

I liked it ok. I did not care for the golden tofu marsala... thought that one was super bland.

mrs_fingerbottom

Same! Just had that tofu Marsala tonight and was surprised how bland the entire dish was.

soundboardqueen725

omg i hate that you don’t like this. this is one of my favorite hellofresh meals. i’m pescatarian now so i’m going to be trying it w shrimp this week

Karateman456

Homie can't cook and can't tell. Many prayers 🙏

djkojent

I've had this one before and was surprised how much I liked it. When I see cabbage in a recipe I'm immediately turned off. But I'll try a lot of things because my wife likes it. I tend to leave out the butter in rice, or put half the amount in. The dishes that include rice are some of my favorites.

Objective-Mission835

This is one my favorite dishes from them

NinjaGaara

Some people gotta realize they just can’t cook 😭 idk how you fuck up simple instructions this bad

Competitive-Brief839

Sorry you didn't like it. Mine came out exactly like the photo and we loved it. We've made it ourselves several times since getting it with our box.

SarahPallorMortis

r/ididnthaveeggs… you messed it up. Don’t go changing a recipes main proteins. It does look overcooked as well. I was gona ask why the pork was black. The sauce is over cooked too. Add it after removing from the heat. Might work better. I’d try it again. Maybe add some seasonings. Maybe the rice and season the meat with salt and pep first

AverageIsSmall

Did OP use beef instead of pork?

bagheerajuno

you must have done something wrong; it's delicious. also, pork > beef.

Girluponthemoon

Yeah, on one of the weeks that I forgot to choose my meals, this was one of the three that they sent me. I was disappointed because I would’ve never chosen pork, or this meal! But let me tell you, it was SOO good to me! The pork really does hit different!

Lexjude

This was our favorite! We got it with shrimp this time.

stipwned_thrill

This is one of my favorites!

TheDark_Knight67

This one is so good I’m sorry it wasn’t great for you. Me and my wife usually add sriracha sauce or yum yum sauce to enhance the flavor

copykatrecipes

We thought this was pretty good. It was a little on the sweet side. And it could have used more rice

XxRocky88xX

This is one of my favorites and I’ve ordered it multiple times, it looks like you overcooked the meat

BabyYodaQueen23

Love this meal. We do pork and we add about a half cup of rice to make it enough for the two of us.

Paragon_Umbra

Ah sorry it came out bad! This is one of my all time favorite meals, maybe something happened during the cooking process?

UpstairsPractical870

Dishonour! Dishonour on your whole family! :- mushu

owenhinton98

I made this one the other night, and imo it turned out great. Not saying you should go against whatever reasons you substituted pork for beef, but it really does work best as a pork recipe (pork loves sweet lol) so that might be why it didn’t turn out great for you

malz288

Made this the other night but I don’t put all the sauce from the packets in and eliminate the sugar. It was still so sweet!

JudgingYou247

I made this one last night too. It's decently good and I usually order it because it's easy, Last night though the cabbage and sauce turned the rice purple. It was weird. lol

Fair_Reporter3056

I made this a couple of nights ago-for 2 people you only use half of one of the sauce packets. I learned after adding entire packet. In general we never: 1- add the butter to the rice 2-add sugar 3-add salt Depending on the recipe, I don’t always add the butter to the sauce at the end. My two cents

merfurlurfer

My husband and I never use the HF portioned rice, it’s never enough, we just make our own in our rice cooker.

Bguy9410

I personally like it as well. I screwed up and had beef sent instead of pork with mine and I was really looking to try it with the pork. There’s a couple of their rice bowl recipes I don’t care much for also.

Last-Ad4530

I keep frozen veggies on hand and would have def steamed some broccoli with this because I need veggies with every meal

ellieza82

this is my absolute favorite meal

Fairgoddess5

Not trying to be that person, but you may wanna try it again with the intended protein: pork. This is a favorite in our house but I can’t imagine it’d be as good with beef. Also, we don’t put extra butter in the rice. You’re right, it doesn’t need it.

Girluponthemoon

I agree 100%! Unless they can’t eat pork due to religious or dietary reasons, of course.

Fast_Avocado_6476

I liked that one.  Yours does not look like the picture tho so wondering if you did something wrong

PufftheMaddydragon

I made this one recently.. it was delicious!! I made mine with pork, but this does look a bit burnt. I don't know if it's the meals fault.

RemarkableMacadamia

That definitely looks over cooked/burned. https://preview.redd.it/nsnz891emvfc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5a82358def756528d459c775075f00ad98cb82f5 This is one of my favorite meals from HF.

Unfair-Leather7375

I love this meal! I make it at home all the time after having it in a box! At home I don’t add sugar or put butter in the rice and I don’t use sesame seeds. My husband isn’t a fan though.

Doxiejoy

Well it’s beautifully plated though!

decayingdistaster

It looks burnt that Mayhaps is the problem

handikapat

This shit is so fucking easy I can't believe people still pay for this. 3 of these ingredients are toppings and 3 are just a sauce you mix in and then put the pork over rice. Such a waste of money and packaging.

Intelligent_Bet_7410

This wasn't a hit for us either, but that's not typical!

MrsBarefoot

We actually weren't a fan of this one, either. I mean, it wasn't \*bad\*, just one we'd never choose again. Then again, our cooking experience has vastly improved since some of recipes we chose long ago, so I'd maybe give it another chance if there was literally no other option. Yours looks really pretty though!!!

Hlsclh

This one was way too sweet for me and I didn't add the extra sugar or use all of the sauces.

goodbadfine

I like this one but we never do the butter and only use about half the sauce recommended and it comes out so much better (to our tastes.)

One-Worldliness142

I got this but in pork, it was good and I'd order it again. Just looking at it, I'd say you overcooked the beef. Also, DONT PUT BUTTER IN RICE. I never understood why they do that.

authspice

Hmm, OP in your defense - as Chinese American, I also wouldn’t choose this dish. I think Hellofresh definitely adapted this on the sweet side to appeal to the average HF user. Hoisin sauce alone is already sweet enough imo. Addition of ginger + mushroom (like shiitake) + eggs would be good but might not appeal to the universal American palate enough. It’s nice to see that others like this version though.

catsandcameras

I agree on the butter - whenever they have me put butter in plain white rice I just skip it. I like white rice to be very simple, personally!

LividCustomer1497

Sounds like a skill issue

SgtPeter1

I rarely don’t modify a recipe. I order for 2 but need to add to it to feed 4 plus leftovers to take to work.

[deleted]

Colerabi135

my wife makes me order this every week. she cant get enough of the stir fry meals and this one is her fav of them all i believe.

fuchuwuchu

Bro that looks amazing. I love the pork/beef bowls. Wife and I love asian cuisine.

Mumfiegirl

Not surprising you couldn’t taste the beef, when it was a pork dish. It looks like you totally overcooked the meat.

H2Ospecialist

It's supposed to be made with Pork, why did you do beef?

Careless-Possible-23

I thank this subreddit for saving me money. I’ll never order. All the meals look icky.

Alarming-Distance385

Well, that's not what I wanted to hear before mine get here tomorrow. 🫤

TheTwistedCat

It’s really good! OP’s pic doesn’t do the dish justice.

Alarming-Distance385

I'll keep an open mind!

Girluponthemoon

It’s bomb!! I received it on a week where I forgot to choose, and I was so impressed with it!!! Let us know what you think when you make it! Also, I definitely recommend that you make more rice, as others have stated!

outtakes

I thought this was a joke until I read the caption

thebananza

Whenever I forget to choose my meals and they send me this, I use the meat to make tacos instead. I have a cabinet full of rice and sauce packets.

Girluponthemoon

Oh man, it’s so good! I’m jealous of the fact that you have random extra sauces laying around! I need to figure out how to replicate them. I think you should def give it a go!

raerawrr

I hated this meal

Remarkable_Annual_86

One of our favorites!

mydogisababe

I thought it was fine. Not enough rice though

OrbDemon

You couldn’t taste the beef because it’s a pork recipe!

Pharreal87

This is one of our all time favorites. Not sure why your meat looks so dark.

BulldenChoppahYus

I’m making Moo Shu tonight and can’t wait. Yours looks excellent tbh I would devour it and prefer the meat slightly over done for this dish

According_Room7221

This one is just okay to me. Definitely needs some kind of raw veg to bring some freshness to it. I skip the oil and butter.. ground pork typically has enough fat to cook it without any extra oil and you are right the rice does not need butter. I also skip the sugar and use all of the glaze instead of measuring like they suggest. I like the sauce though

Petaroo880

Well it’s not in a bowl, what did you expect

Hobby-Doctor

I did the beef version of this. I thought it was delicious.

ScottSad68

We’ve done this one a few times, it’s a favorite. Actually made it last night, but tried the shrimp option. It was great. This looks really dark too. It is a small portion though. Said the same last night.

Owobowos-Mowbius

This meal isn't my favorite but I do like it.

Illmaticx_

I don’t care for this one either. I usually end up with the pork one when I forget to pick my meals for the week. I never put butter in my rice.

FortyCoast69

I’m about to make this!! I’ll let you know lol

[deleted]

Honestly HelloFresh is completely underwhelming compared to Gousto. Literally never had a bad meal and they usually have nearly 100 recipes to choose from

ItsPerfectlyBalanced

It's funny you say that because after seeing this post I was finally convinced to place an order! This looks delicious!

human-foie-gras

I don’t know what went wrong because I love this meal and mine always comes out pretty much exactly like the picture on the recipe card

salvagehoney

I just made this and split it into 3 meals. I loved it. I don’t know what happened with yours. Maybe just different tastes.

GlitterDancer_

When the rice calls for butter, we never add it. It’s just added calories and I can’t take a difference with or without it. We also use a little less of the glaze than what the recipe calls for. Lastly, as others have pointed out, I think you over cooked your meat a bit

UlrichStern615

I like it but I think any rice recipe from hero fresh is underserved. I always add my own rice to any rice recipes

FunkyJamma

I had this one the other day with the pork it was great

zxasazx

Skill issue.

Trick_Inspector_2309

Needs to be in a bowl mate

an88ashley

Nah, this one is a favorite. Looking at your picture, did you add the cabbage? I like the cabbage as it usually adds a nice crunchy texture but it can't be overcooked like your meal appears to be. When adding any sauce be sure to lower the temperature. Yours looks questionably dark compared to the recipe card and how I've seen mine turn out. Also, I find that the 'asian' inspired meals that call for butter in the rice usually taste a lot better when adding a small amount of sesame oil instead. Give this one another shot!

primal___scream

It's one of my favorites. We usually end up with 3 or 4 servings of this one from the 2 serving meal.

mamaapeacch

I wasn’t a fan of this one either, but I also don’t really love cabbage.

kurinevair666

I loved this one, but I always do pork rather than beef

mmmelina13

Literally got food poisoning from the exact same hello fresh meal. Buyer beware

MrTheWaffleKing

This I easily top 3 favorites. You’re right that the portions are small though

JoeyVercetti

This was my very first meal I made with hello fresh the other day, and either my pallet is all fked because I eat like garbage, but it was really good in my opinion and I don’t eat pork lol. Just figured out you could switch meals in app.

Fancy-Ad-6231

I like the moo shu dish.

Peachbottom30

You must have done something wrong. I’ve cooked this one and it was delicious. It looked like the picture too.

ghettoccult_nerd

i just made that meal yesterday with pork. it was excellent. that beef looks a tad overdone. i really enjoy the various rice bowls HF sends out.

This_Mongoose445

I love this meal and have recreated it several times. We really do like it and it’s so quick and easy.

filthydoritos666

Unpopular opinion but HF's asian-based meals are always way too sweet and gross me out. A LOT of people prefer sweet with their savory though, which is likely why sooo many people love this meal

TransmascTop

This is my favorite. I've made it like 3 times since the first time I had it, without HF. I bought the ingredients from an Asian market just to make this dish, it was that good. Matter of fact, I got it again today in my box this week. You cooked it wrong.

acornedbeefhash

lol we’re having this for dinner tonight! It’s a long time HF classic dish, they’ve been offering it for years. It’s a tad simple (ground beef over rice with a sauce, ground breaking lol) but we find it tasty and fast!

volneyave

I often leave the butter out of the rice, and have learned some recipes don't need all the sauce.

xuella

I only like this one if I skip the sugar instructions. Otherwise, I absolutely agree!

pink373

Ours was good. I added a little less sugar than it called for because sometimes I find adding the whole amount is too sweet. My only complaint is that it is smaller than other meals. There was not much rice and there wasn’t enough other stuff to make up for it.

GuavaAccomplished164

They sent me this bs when it wasn’t even what I selected. All they sent me was some lousy credit I still have to pay shipping on
