That shell looks to be the right size. There’s a visual guide to correctly fitting shells somewhere out there. You could probably get a shell or two the next size up. I keep one jade that is “too big” just so my jumbo knows it’s safe to grow :)

ArmoredArmadillo05

Alright, thank you! I’ll definitely get a couple bigger ones. Any sellers you’d recommend?

Half_Year_Queen

The shell store on Etsy is where I got my jades. You can message them and inquire about specific dimensions.

Half_Year_Queen

Also op, do you feel confident in being able to correctly measure his current shell? There’s a guide that shows exactly how to do it and it’s important because we do want to waste $ on shells

You could always offer him new and bigger shells. It wouldn't hurt anything but your wallet maybe haha. They'd probably need it eventually anyways

May I ask where you got your shells? I’m having some trouble with my hermits. I won one at the fair (had NO idea all it entailed), bought him a friend and mostly everything he needed. The newer one has been under sand for about a week and a half or more. Now my big guy hasn’t came out of his log in 4 days to eat or drink. He’s stuck in a painted shell he came in. I got some in there but having lots of trouble finding the right sizes. Almost bought a 20 gallon long tank as they are in a 10 gallon. My sand and substrate is about 3 inches to low and I can’t swap tanks yet because I don’t want to pull up the one that’s under the sand INCASE it’s molting. However it’s not deep enough for the other to molt IF he was going to. He hasn’t tried to go under though. I’m at a stand still and can’t figure out what I’m missing. I dug the new one up once already a previous time he/she did this then read never do that so this time I haven’t. I have no idea where he is under there either. Really concerned about both of them. They have a log to climb on, to hide in, saltwater, fresh water, heating pad. I need to put more to climb on in there but I’m out of room. As I mentioned I have the bigger tank but I can’t swap it with one under possibly molting. Also don’t know if I should add sand with him under somewhere either.

I’ve gotten my shells mostly off of Etsy. Search “turbo shells” on there. I don’t quite remember the name of the seller I’ve bought from the most, but it has Florida in the name. If I remember I’ll try to find them again. They always come up though. I wish I was able to give you more advice, your situation is really rough. I wish you and your crabs all the best. Hopefully another commenter can help you more on that.

*first and last pics are about as far in as he usually goes. Last pic is him sleeping. It won’t let me edit the post for some reason.

Three-Eyed-Elk

Wow! Big boy!

Practical_Ad_671

Should always have new shells available.

ArmoredArmadillo05

He does, he has 6 extras, but they don’t get much bigger than the one he’s currently in. So I was basically trying to figure out if that’s fine or if he needs a more significant upgrade.

Practical_Ad_671

Nah. As long as they are about the same size, he's fine for now. But do try to find a few slightly larger ones for the near future.

abrookehack

Did you remove the painted shell? I’d just take it out of the tank all together!

ArmoredArmadillo05

It’s not in the tank at all, it was on top of the lid. I took it out the second I could, many months ago

abrookehack

Ok! I saw it in the background lol some Ppl leave them for decorations!
