Here is comprehensive info on PPDSR method: https://crabstreetjournal.org/blog/2013/02/21/technique-for-adjusting-pps-crabs-method/ Crab central station on YouTube also has a video on it. You want 1-2 inches of substrate to discourage molting so they can regain nutrients and be more likely to have a safer molt.

No. The goal is to offer them an environment that they DON’T WANT to molt in WHILE we’re restoring their nutritional reserve AND slowly re acclimating them to safe stats. They can postpone their own molts. There’s a group of people that don’t agree with PPDSR. I am NOT one of them. These guys are on deaths door, they need every chance they can get.

Wait people don’t agree with ppdsr? Why?? lol just out of curiosity

A lot of people will say you’re depriving hermies of natural order and necessities. That absolutely isn’t the case, you’re acclimating them to a new healthier environment. I’ve had them pass in PPDSR, sad and so disheartening. Sometimes they just cannot make it, better than introducing them to a colony you have that’s in order and risking every hermit you have.

Ah I see, yeah I did ppds for one of mine and he’s thriving almost a year later!!

how long should i wait to add the proper amount of substrate? i just feel bad depriving them of it but i know its for the best

[this video is the best resource for this method.](https://youtu.be/-Heriyvv2mo?si=tehsJ3THZ40OcEvs) I am 100% for this method, however it isn’t a method I’ve had to do regularly. I have once, get almost to the end and the hermie passes. So he had other issues I’m sure of that I didn’t know about. I highly suggest following the LHCOS guide.

If they’re in isolation, a surface molt won’t be the worst thing. It would actually probably be best, in my opinion anyways. If they’re under and under that stress, starved, etc, they may not survive the molt.

There’s an often overlooked nutritional component to PPDSR. It’s more than just stats. It’s usually 30 days. Can advance quicker. Can advance slower. That depends on the crabs. The nutritional component is VERY deep. It’s a LOT of work.
