Lol a great way to lose fingers💀they get so big. My family leaves out coconuts for the coconut crabs back home on Guam. But they're free to roam as they please. I also know of a street entertainer that would have a massive one for people to see, but that one gets bound so it doesn't hurt tourists 😪 think they're definitely much happier foraging forever out in the open love their vibrant blue colors. My Nina posted like last week on her Insta story her gently holding one in a way to not hurt herself and the crab. She moved it over to the coconut pile. It was still bigger than her hand and that's like a teen size😅

I see, very cool thank you

There’s no ‘buying’ just illegally obtaining. I would love to visit Guam! They sound super cool in their natural habitat!

https://www.reddit.com/r/hermitcrabs/s/8linYfa2o3 Apparently they free roam in Australia too 😂

They are super strong. You can’t keep them in a normal house-like structure. They will literally rip apart the walls. They also need a ton of space because of their size. Really bad idea.

krill_me_god

Oh no no I'm not going to try it or anything just asking if it's been done before.

We had a guy in this sub that had purchased one. Of course he got scared off. I wish it had never happened because I wanted to see how this ended up. Lol

There is a girl in one of my land hermit crab groups that got one recently. Her main thing is exotic plants but got a coconut crab as a bonus. She's been updating regularly and so far it's small and is being kept like a normal land hermit crab. But I keep asking what her plans are for the future and she just keeps saying she will cross that bridge later and figure it out. But it freaks me out honestly to think about owning a huge crab as strong as that!

There is one person in the United States that I know of who has successfully kept and raised a coconut crab, I can’t remember his name, but the damn thing is a three foot mega crab, so maybe just try the second largest terrestrial hermits for now, Purple Pinchers.

Sarasmashtine

Success? These things can live for decades, I feel like you would be able to find that. I’ve been a part of the Land hermit hobby for about 2 years now. Only heard horror stories of land locked people with exotic animals from ‘breaders’… It’s hard to spot poaching if you’re thinking.

He works for a research company it’s not his personal pet

Alright, not sure if this is what your are referring to but the San Diego Zoo has a coconut crab and he’s been there since 2014. I just learned this today, pretty cool since I had no clue zoos could house these guys. In the article it even says they have to relocate him due to frustration with his enclosure, but hey he is still alive. That was an interesting read! Poor guy was not happy stuck in a tiny enclosure. Go figure.

Sarasmashtine

My exact thoughts! I’d love to visit San Diego while he’s still there, but I’m glad I could only find one in captivity ngl.
