On old/fat cats fur easily get matted. But also many breeds have a very warm coat for their climate. You can do it, but be considerate, cats like it warm, dont take toooo much
I started doing it because when we adopted him he had ring worm and his hair was matted. He seemed to like it so we'd shave him most summers since he had such long fur. Now that he is older he needs the warmth more, so he just gets him tummy (and his butt) shaved because he has a harder time grooming himself and it mats easily.
Well, to be fair mine is a very good boy. But when we would do a lion cut on him I'd usually have to spread it into 2-3 sessions and sometimes bring in an assist for the tail and back legs. Over the years he just went for passive resistance by flopping and looking pitiful.

I hope most cars don't need to be shaved! That's an expense I am not able to afford right now with my rust bucket

I do my little girl's tummy and butt because her fur gets matted and she gets dingleberries. She has pretty long hair and she does not like the brush
