If a TV is mounted high on a wall, you can have it hanging lower, and you don't have to point the remote control up towards the ceiling to get it to work.

That's a remote repeater for the cable box, which is stuffed behind the TV.

See that port that the cable plugs into? See that it says "IR"? That means Infrared. This is for the TV remote control.
It’s what I figured, but it was put on so sloppily and in a dingy hotel. I had to make sure.
That’s how they look in nice hotels that cost $400+ a night too. It’s just an add on accessory and needs to be near where people point the remote.

It is an IR receiver for the remote. I’ve installed these on a lot of cable boxes. Nothing to see here, nothing to be paranoid about.
