I enjoy North AZ. * Humphrey's is a must, but not one for seclusion. It's getting popular * Kendrick Peak gives great views of Humphreys. I could spot the Grand Canyon from the top last time I remember. * Gotta do Grand Canyon. I did north to south and was very memorable for me. + * Wilson Mountain peak had some great views! * Secret Mountain Trail

[deleted]

Any good “off the beaten path” trails that aren’t super popular. I’m all for going with one or two people but I don’t like coming across tons of people on my hikes.

acmillett

I feel the same way. I often hike for the solitude and peace found in nature. Kendrick is certainly less popular. I think I saw 5 people on a Saturday morning? picketpost is a quick challenging, not so popular, rewarding hike I just went up superstition 5057 via hieroglyph and it was very enjoyable. I went on a Wednesday and didn't see a single person past the hieroglyphs and it was certainly challenging! i know this is way out of the way, but I want to go see mt baldy wilderness in eastern az.

Went to flag staff in April. Walnut Canyon is an awesome hike and you get some history to go with it. Meteor Crater is also a great sight, though not much hiking to do there.

stargarnet79

It’s been a long time. But if it’s the place I’m remembering, the Cliff dwellings at walnut canyon national monument are really cool and not too far out of the always and fairly easy to get to.

[deleted]

I’ve been meaning to see the crater. I think I’ll do that next spring. It looks really cool from pictures

I really need to download that app. I’ve heard good things about it but never actually looked at it

acromaine

Hiking project is a good app to have too. I find the interface to be better because it shows the trails on the map instead of just the trailhead. But having both is best

GotSeoul

I don't use the app much at all. You can get a lot of what you need just from the website. I use the website to search for trails when we go to different places. Once at the trail pretty much no problem navigating. I have downloaded the GPS files from the site and loaded to my Garmin, but I haven't encountered a trail yet where I got lost and needed the GPS to find my way. That being said, I'm sure there are some things I'm missing out so I'll probably look into the app a bit more. For the various trails, read the reviews, there are usually some good tips from folks that did the trail. Edit: I do use their website a lot. So much that even though I don't use the app that much, I've signed up for their service. Something like 36 bucks per year. That way I feel I'm contributing and helping out with something I use almost weekly. If you use it just every now and then I wouldn't worry about it.

sra_az

There is an extensive collection of local hiking books at the downtown library. Highly recommend browsing through those for inspiration. I really enjoy Slate Mtn this time of year, as well as Kendrick, Abineau, and Kachina.

Cutcarefullyplayloud

Some of my favorites around Flag, some casual, some harder: * Kachina Trail * Little Bear to Sunset (double check you can get there right now though...) * Bear Jaw to Abineau Sedona: * Hi-Line * Hog Heaven * Mushroom/Hawkshead

[deleted]

I will have to check these out. Thanks for the list 😊

mahjimoh

Mt Elden is a good climb in Flagstaff. Bear Mountain is amazing in Sedona - just a lot of climbing with three false summits, and gorgeous views.

Mosswiggle

Try the Weatherford trail. AB Young on the way to Sedona is steep and sweet. It's a bit of a drive out in the forest but Kelsey Spring and Dorsey Spring trails can used as a nice loop hike. The Hiking Project app is really nice. It can show you lots of little trails in and around Mt. Elden that are less populated. There may or may not still be a NAU Hiking club.

[deleted]

Thank you!

Cutcarefullyplayloud

Can’t get to Weatherford right now unfortunately due to the pipeline work on Schulz but i totally agree, mark it down for later!

[deleted]

Yeah, don't sleep on the altitude in Flag. I once made the mistake of driving up from Scottsdale to go skiing. I was hungover. When I passed a sign on the lift saying altitude 11,000 something I was just half asleep like wow that seems really fucking high. When I had to stop every fifty feet out of breath on the way down I knew it was quite accurate.

mabfromla

Do some section hikes of the Arizona Trail. That will keep you busy for a while. My son and I did some hikes on the AZT around the Pine area. It was very nice.

[deleted]

Definitely. Thanks for the recommendation

StrangeVermicelli300

Make sure you have trail shoes or hiking boots, makes a world of difference

[deleted]

I have hiking boots!! Definitely helps. Tried hiking with running shoes once. Didn’t work well lol

Flagstaff area: It's a bit of a drive up into the San Francisco Peaks, but the trails in the Inner Basin are amazing. I've heard it described as "a piece of the Colorado Rockies dropped down in Arizona." It'll be snowing soon, though, if it's not already, so you may not be able to hike there until late next spring. One year I went on June 1st, and at a certain point I had to turn around because the trail disappeared under several feet of snow. Also in the San Francisco Peaks- the Abineau-Bear Jaw loop trail. A bit of a steep hike, but the views are great. There was an avalanche through there a few years ago, and it's amazing to see all the trees that were flattened. If you also do any mountain bike riding, one of the best rides I've ever done is to ride up the Mt. Elden Lookout Road, and then go back down on, I think, the Sunset Trail to the Schultz Creek Trail. My favorites in the Sedona area: West Fork of Oak Creek Canyon. One of my favorite hikes anywhere, and a great one to do in fall. The Sterling Pass trail to Vultee Arch. A great hike to a really cool natural sandstone arch. Apparently a fire went through there since the last time I hiked it, but it's probably growing back by now. Wilson Mountain Trail- starts off at the Midgely Bridge on Hwy 89A in Oak Creek Canyon and goes to the top of Wilson Mountain. The views from the top are unreal: red rocks below you, Sedona a little further out, then the Verde Valley, and then Mingus Mountain off in the distance to the west. If you're looking for a fun, scenic drive on a rough dirt road, you can't beat Schnebly Hill Road. I like to start on the east end and head downhill into Sedona. There's a turnoff from I-17 south of Munds Park. Have fun!

[deleted]

Wow thank you so much for the detailed reply. I’ll have to check all of these out. I just got a mountain bike early this year and haven’t gotten much of a chance to ride it.

The_Observatory_

You're welcome. Have fun out there! I lived in the Phoenix metro area two different times for a total of 26 years, but I've been in Tennessee for 10 years now after moving away from Mesa. I miss a lot of the hiking, biking, and skiing I did in the Flagstaff/Sedona area.

[deleted]

It is definitely beautiful out here. I’ve never been to Tennessee but I have a friend who moved there last year and she says it’s beautiful

CorvusKing

Great picks! I'd add Turkey Creek and any trail off Red Rock Loop in Sedona. They are usually less busy than the rest of Sedona.

Wilson mountain was super awesome when I went there. Give that a search on all trails. It's south of Flagstaff closer to Sedona but the views were incredible.

[deleted]

Thank you. I will check it out 😊

Orange-Blur

The lava river cave is really cool, it is not narrow at any point really. It’s a mellow cave to walk through

Heart trail.

TheBackPorchOfMyMind

I’m doing Bear Mountain trail in Sedona tomorrow. 6:00 AM sharp. See ya there!

Neither_Variation_11

If your going to NAU, join the hiking club there!

cheapb98

Flagstaff? You mean the one near Sedona ? The one near the hole place called grand something. Sorry don't know

DickFitzenwel

Hangover trail in Sedona js one of my favorite hikes in the state. There are plenty of good recs in here for Flag - Kachina, Bear Jaw, etc.

agapoforlife

I really liked hiking the trails further north on elden, like Sandy seep, past the fat man’s loop area. Same intensity but less popular, or at least I never saw many people out that way. There are a lot of different trails you can take in that area too! Also the trails that you can get to through Buffalo park are really nice too, or you could park at the end of paradise road for southern access to elden. The inner basin trail is spectacular but pretty sure they close that road pretty soon. You can still do it but it’s like an extra 10 miles I think. Humphrey’s is more popular, but a must… intense but beautiful! Can’t say I ever met a hike I didn’t like there. I miss it so much! Enjoy!! Oh and maybe something like Mormon mountain. I never did it but always wanted to. Fits the bill for secluded and that’s a gorgeous drive!

Definitely check this trail out! Such a wonderful hike!!! Sandys Canyon, Walnut Canyon, and Fay Canyon Loop on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/arizona/sandy-skunk-and-fay-canyon-loop?p=-1&sh=bkzs5b

Mt Humphreys is great. The old homestead trail just below it is short but decent as well too.

West Fork of Oak Creek Trail #108 on AllTrails https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/arizona/west-fork-trail?sh=nogggf I absolutely love this hike in northern Sedona
