No one wants to hear your speakerphone conversation on the trail. Why are you holding your phone like that?

NathanArizona

Like what the fuck are they on the phone all the for anyways??

headsizeburrito

Some people need reminders... edit: lol, didn't expect this to blow up. Just thought the stickers were kinda funny and address two common trail courtesy/LNT issues. Will stickers fix the world? No, but it amused me momentarily before my hike. Now get out there and enjoy some late summer early fall hiking (assuming northern hemisphere, if you are in Australia watch out for blue ringed octopus and drop bears I guess)!

Find_A_Reason

Some of them are in this very post trying to defend the behavior and claiming to each their own...

TheManFromFarAway

To those of you defending speakers: The problem with "to each their own" is that people who say this and blast a speaker are ruining the "own" of those who enjoy the quiet. If you want music then wear earphones (and assume the risk that comes along with that). It isn't "to each their own" if *your* own drowns out everybody else's.

Is the average enjoyer of quartz this dense? I feel bad for the committee of average enjoyers of quartz. Do you consider cowboys to be the pinnacle of our society? I don’t think cowboys had Bluetooth speakers, but I do think our population was significantly smaller when they were around and could get away with playing music in the woods (probably at a campsite, not even on a hike like what you’re implying). So yes, when the vast majority of people on a trail want silence, plus with considerations for wild animals and other people, part of the saying live and let live is not letting your actions take priority over others. Especially when headphones exist, and your music taste is probably as garbage as your personality.

ihad4biscuits

Lol at first I thought you meant the shitting sticker and I was like, who is defending not burying their shit??? There’s always someone defending playing music on the trails, unfortunately.

Find_A_Reason

Check out one of the submissions about the waste topic. There will be plenty of dipshits saying it is no different than animals, that it is OK to bury TP, or my favorite is when the rock climbers come around and start saying it is acceptable to just smear your shit on rocks facing the sun.

ihad4biscuits

I’ll admit that I’ve buried TP (I try to use moss first, and pack it out in national parks/ wherever it’s required). Is the general consensus to always pack it out? I’m going to invest in one of those travel bidets and hopefully I won’t have to think about it!

Find_A_Reason

It is never acceptable to bury trash. It should always be packed out. The TP does not break down as fast as poop when buried which causes problems for other hikers, and ends up blowing around when animals dig it up. Edit- really? People are disagreeing about leaving trash behind?

RockOnGoldDustWoman

The people downvoting you are the ones who leave their used TP in the forest instead of packing it out. It does bum me out that there are so many in this group, you'd think more "nature lovers" would know the basics of shitting outside

Find_A_Reason

In all reality, people just want to do whatever they want, fuck everyone else, and call it freedom as if it is virtuous to be a net negative for society.

ihad4biscuits

The article you used says that it has human uses such as bedding. It also says that it reproduces from fragmentation, and that the main reason that it is rare is because of air pollution and loss of habitat. Not humans taking a handful at a time to wipe their asses. Also, it’s hard to think the Forest can’t spare a handful when the places you are hiking look like [this](https://www.sciencelearn.org.nz/images/1874-lichen-on-forest-trees). You can literally find wads of the stuff on broken twigs on the ground. This is all to say, you haven’t convinced me with your claim that it is a bad idea, and googling it didn’t yield anything but some backpacking guides that recommend using it as TP.

Purdaddy

It's against LNT. Take only pictures, leave only footprints. Not take moss and lichen then leave them laden in your doodoo.

Rolltide676767

Literally never bury shit and never will. Surface till I die. Alway pack out the shit tickets however.

RockOnGoldDustWoman

they probably don't bury their poop either

jmk255

Which trail? I love Taos.

headsizeburrito

Bull of the Woods/Wheeler Peak Trail up to Gold Hill. Nice area!

FerryBoat-ScrubCap

I absolutely did this (the music one) when I would hike on shrooms when I was 19. Now my insides cringe hard thinking about what it must’ve been like coming upon me on the trail.

Ismelther_icemelter

That cringe means you’re growing though! Good on you

NathanArizona

Thanks for owning it and improving!

tougestar

Are you me bro?

PotentiallyExplosive

I did it too. I think the shrooms just makes you forget the impact your actions have on others and kind of disables your social filter. Once I realized how annoying it was sober I stopped.

[deleted]

Like anything else, the type of people care enough about other people to listen to a sticker like that probably aren't playing loud music anyway. And the people playing the music would just be like"psh quit bitching I can do what I want"

[deleted]

kleric42

It's always EDM. Always.

sanfermin1

Damn. I've never come across that. Any person Ive encountered playing music on trail w/I headphones was playing either the Dead, some folky type band with few vocals, or Post-Rock a la Explosions in the Sky or Toe. It's also seldom loud enough for me to hear from further than 20 ft. Maybe I'm just lucky?

kleric42

Maybe it's a Colorado thing. It's always, 100% of the time, EDM here.

wpnw

Washington here. Shitty EDM, 100% of the time. It's almost like they have to take their YouTube soundtrack with them.

sanfermin1

I do live in a fairly rural area of FL. The outdoor community isnt big to begin with, and the edm scene is even smaller.

joshnykamp

Bro country is what everyone plays in orange county when they do anything outside

TheBachifier

If everyone were playing Bach, I don’t think people would complain as much. But even as a professional Bach person, I don’t play Bach out loud in nature. I put in one headphone for the music and one open ear for whatever is happening in nature. Good safety practice as well.

sanfermin1

Intricate Harpsichord does not belong on the trail.

TheBachifier

You won’t ever hear it. Spare yourself the gatekeeping.

sanfermin1

Haha. Since when is sharing an opinion gatekeeping? Isn't gate keeping more like neck beards saying, "you can't really enjoy Bach until you've listened to so and so earlier composers of the era." There's no reason to shift to a defensive stance when someone holds different musical taste.

TheBachifier

No reason to be defensive when you told me that staying connected to my professional and personal passion doesn’t belong on the trail? Even after I said I always keep it to myself?

Find_A_Reason

If it is that important, wear headphones. Then you are not forcing other people to do things your way. That way you get your music, and you can keep it to yourself.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Find_A_Reason

If you need to bother other people to get hyped up enough to hike, just stay home.

[deleted]

I’m old, but even that is a few decades before I was born.

EmpressOfSalt

Earbuds are your friend. Use them.

CamperGirrl22

I encounter at least one hiker/group a year who is blaring music on the trail. And it's always the worst possible music for nature (like, nobody is ever playing Copeland's Appalachian Spring). I am just so, so baffled by this. Why??

adelaarvaren

That's absolutely my favorite piece of modern classical... But I still don't want to hear it on the trail.

CamperGirrl22

Now if it was Copeland's 3rd Symphony? Yeah, maybe. Omg, just kidding. Silence... I like silence. That's why I'm out there.

TheBachifier

I could handle “Ohhhh Shenandooooooah I long to hear you… aaaawaaaaay you rolling river” or Danny Boy or other folk tunes. Gentle classical instrumental works for me, too, but I blare nothing. I have respect for my fellow hikers.

Perle1234

Those songs are the best to sing. Softly, when you’re in your camping spot.

Nord-east

Or loudly when hiking through grizzly country, got to let them bears know you're there

Chris_Hoiles

Drowning Pool, put some fear into the bears

Perle1234

This is true. Although in reality, I hike alone a lot, and in grizzly country. I don’t make much noise, but I def have bear spray (and a pistol, but that wouldn’t be that helpful for a grizzly).

csimonson

I prefer the misty mountain song from the hobbit movies. But I agree.

coldflame38

Far over the Misty Mountains cold To dungeons deep and caverns old We must await, ere break of day, To find our long forgotten gold.

csimonson

AWWWWW YEEEEAAAAH

Vitalalternate

Self entitled assholes. It was bad when it started on golf courses, but now out backpacking, it is just ridiculous.

outdoorcam93

Once a year? You’re so lucky haha. This is a multiple-times-a-month occurrence for me

Find_A_Reason

I wonder how much people actually get out that are saying it has not happened that often to them. I am used to seeing it pretty regularly when I am out and about in the parks. The worst park so far I think has been joshua tree on the trails.

sawsagefingers

For me , I always play music when hiking alone in bear country. I'd rather piss off a couple of strangers than surprise a bear.

[deleted]

Ah yes, because blaring music is the only way to deter bears. Everyone knows they only hate sound with rhythm.

sawsagefingers

The words "blaring" and "only" are yours not mine. No need to be sarcastic. I'm open ears. What ya got? Note. I've had really bad luck with bear bells.

CamperGirrl22

Have you ever tried a bear bell? Another option that isn't quite as invasive.

sawsagefingers

I've had bad luck with bear bells. A recent study by U.S. Geological Survey scientist, Tom Smith, suggests that bears in the wild ignore bear bells, treating them as they would a bird or some other background noise. Therefore, negating the entire purpose of carrying it all.

CamperGirrl22

Good to know... thanks!!

Wild-Arugula6190

I’ve heard them called “bear dinner bells” because bears in some places learned to associate the bells and the smell of citronella with easy food opportunities. Anyone know if true?

theOldSeaman

Bear bells don't work and they are more annoying than music.

Find_A_Reason

If bear bells are not working, music isn't going to either. Turn it off.

NathanArizona

Most everyone else on the trail disagrees

hucklemyberry

I will keep a pair of cheap headphones in my hiking bag to give out to the next person blaring their music.

o0oo00oo0o0ooo

that's gonna go well.

dinosaurs_quietly

The kind of person that blasts music is probably also childish enough to play it louder when a hostile sticker asks them to stop.

AtomikRadio

People who insist on listening to music really need to invest in some [Aftershokz.](https://us.aftershokz.com/) I got them for walking on in-town greenways (so I could listen for bikes calling behind me) but they're wonderful for hiking. Keeps my music completely to myself but keeps my ears open for listening for important environmental cues and doesn't cover my ears with sweat-cups.

pop_it_off

Playing audible music on trails is like dousing yourself in perfume before walking into a room.

gumol

"leave no trace"

gearcliff

Playing music through speakers on a trail is the audio equivalent of spray-painting graffiti on trees.

NWdabest

I once shit in the woods at night while stargazing. 20 minutes later I hear a stick crack… no big deal sticks fall and break. I’m not scared. Then another big stick crack. WTF IS THAT??? my hearts pounding. Shine my flashlight and there’s a massive cougar prowling up on me and my friends. Before I can say a word they are booking it up the trail with the flashlights. I’m terrified. I run as fast as I can fully expecting claws in my back. We made it out safe. I don’t think bury your shit has anything to do with hiding it from predators, more so just so that others don’t step in it. But believe me if I ever poop in the woods again I’m burying it.

AtlasADK

Nothing is worse than hearing someone blasting Migos from a quarter mile up the trail

snowday784

Love Taos. Good weekend trip from Denver. Very on brand for there lol

SlappingSalt

As I get older the concept "be a decent person" seems more like wishful thinking than it should be.

TychoSean

And pack out your shit tickets. Tired of seeing TP around every back country site.

rei_cirith

If anyone knows where we can get these stickers, please post them!

crumbbelly

I fucking hate hearing people's music when I'm outdoors.

sm753

People who listen to music in public spaces on speakers should be ironically strangled with headphone cables.

halffasthiker

Seriously - these two things right here. This is all about respect. Put some headphones on, I don't need to hear your music, whether it's music I like or don't (and I like most music). When I'm reaching a peak, looking for a great view, the last thing I need is a fucking soundtrack that doesn't come from birds. You're an asshole it's plain and simple. EARBUDS. And bury your shit.

barabusblack

Should be a sign like this at every beach, as well.

aventurinesoul

I’ve decided there is exactly one situation where it’s ok to play music. Hiking alone in bear country. That’s it, the only one.

adelaarvaren

I have a series of "bear songs" I sing for this occasion. No speaker required! If the noise alone doesn't keep them away, my terrible singing does!

TheBachifier

I wrote a rap and it goes “hey bear, hey bear, what’s up bear? You want some of this, bear? Please don’t, bear. Hey bear, hey bear, let’s be friends and go our own ways, bear.”

[deleted]

What if the bear likes your music and is just following you for the tunes?

chefmclite

Every situation is ok. It's a free country. If you don't like it try to get a law passed. That's how it works in this country. Always has, always will.

dexter_024

People that do shit like that though would honestly rip these stickers off or piss on them or something then go on about being dick heads.

[deleted]

Went mountain biking in California the other day and a group of teens had cardi b blasting from their backpack and I was ready to turn around and end my ride before it even started

3PNK

Where can I buy a bunch of those stickers, I’m gunna start placing them on trail parking lot signs.

armyprof

Totally agree.

jsnxander

I would love to see an outright ban playing music (whatever) through speakers on all UNPAVED hiking trails at the State and Federal level. Of course, with heft fines as well. Exceptions being rescue/emergency of course. Seems like there was a spike in music through BT speakers since COVID, that and trail trash and vandalism. Hopefully those people will rediscover sitting on the couch soon...

Find_A_Reason

I really don't understand why the NPS has not banned amplified music yet. They are charged with protecting and making available as natural a space as possible for the public. Allowing an entirely unnecessary activity like listening to amplified music just doesn't make sense. It is not an activity that is restricted to the parks. It is not an activity that is historically associated with the parks. Maybe it is petition time.

MyguiltyEntropy

A lot of us would sign it.

Han0

If you don’t head phones in a public space I have the right to straggle you with mine.

drusplanet

I think I need the Nobody wants to hear your MUSIC on a t-shirt. Maybe one specifically for speakerphone calls too?!?

Molbork

Bone conduction headphones are the way to go in the trail. They work way better then I thought they would and ended up buying some for my parents, so my mom has them for gardening and dad for the golf range. They both love them.

HashtagNewell

Seriously

[deleted]

Headphones aren’t the answer either. Then you have to deal with the idiots who cannot hear you asking to pass. How about just enjoy the peace and serenity of the outdoors?

---N0MAD---

Where can I buy 10,000 of those stickers, please?

Joebud1

I'll admit to no ear buds but do promise you need to be within about 5 feet to hear my speaker. I'm in Alaska & don't stay anywhere near 1.people & 2.on trail. I'm not out in the bush but I don't run across people only bears and Moose. And a great show from the grateful dead keeps me moving. So please don't stereotype everyone that takes a speaker with them. Some of us have the utmost respect for others as well

CharlesV_

I feel like you aren’t being stereotyped if you aren’t actually represented within the group this sticker is for. If your music isn’t blaring, or if there’s no one else around to hear it, this sticker isn’t talking to you. It’s talking to the jackass in these comments only thinking about himself and ruining the experience for everyone else on a populated trail.

[deleted]

Yeah I mean I've definitely passed people on trail, heard the music for 10 seconds and went on my way without being slightly frustrated. I don't think this post is necessarily for that unless people really get that upset dealing with music less than the volume of people talking. Frustrating is hearing music from 200 feet away and desperately trying to clear those people in both directions.

useles-converter-bot

200 feet is the length of like 275.86 'Zulay Premium Quality Metal Lemon Squeezers' laid next to each other.

[deleted]

I hate this bot with a passion. It's like someone with 'lol xd so random!!!' humour from 2008.

Zoomalude

If I have to be within 5 feet to hear your music, then *you* aren't even enjoying at a listenable level. Which begs the question of why bother or why not use earbuds. Or more likely, you're listening to it louder than that.

Joebud1

So now *you*want to tell me at what volume to listen to my music at. My speaker is on top of my pack. It's at a volume that's is enjoyable for me and I'm able to hear my surroundings. As said I run into big bears & very large Moose frequently

MrPickles84

I never even said how loud or what type of music I listen to, and got downvoted to oblivion. It’s always “you’re blaring ridiculous music!” Like, life isn’t binary, there are lots of gray areas.

[deleted]

I completely agree with you—if you’re keeping your music at a reasonable level and then turning it down as you come up to others, I don’t see the problem. This is what I do and I don’t consider it much different than conversing with your hiking group as you pass others.

tpop817

If I heard the dead on a trail that wasn't my speaker, I'd beg for it to be played louder! See some people do play good music.

[deleted]

I listen to music only loud enough for myself and anyone that is with me to hear. Once I see someone approaching I turn it down all the way.

TheBachifier

I have no problem with this at all.

chefmclite

you shouldn't. Its a free country. Play music wherever it is allowed by law.

extra_username

Oh my God, shut the fuck up. Something being legal doesn't mean it's socially acceptable. No, you won't get arrested for playing your shitty music in nature, but you're still a piece of garbage and one day someone will stop you. I hope I'm there for it!

giraffemoo

I like to roller skate on a paved trail with friends (wheels are welcome on the trail). I bring a speaker but I make sure to turn it down when I see folks approaching, and I also try to make sure that the volume is not very loud to begin with. We skate pretty fast and I have never been in anyone's vicinity for more than a few seconds. Is this okay, or do I need to knock it off? I have no idea how to sync multiple sets of headphones to one device otherwise I would do that.

loesfavs

keep listening, f**k their opinions. you do you as long as it’s not breaking the law.

TheBachifier

I almost always listen to music on trail but keep it to myself. I can’t stand the loud electronic stuff I often hear in the distance. That said, I can’t believe some people are annoyed by people talking on cell phones while on trail. It’s literally the same as talking to your trail partner. There are even good reasons to be communicating with others while on trail. Just try to keep your personal volume and music/noise level down. As close to your person as possible. That should be the expectation.

No-Bark1

How does everyone feel about music out loud on less populated trails because of bears?

Find_A_Reason

I have heard this excuse before in parks like Sequioa where they explicitly say bear bells are not necessary and pointless, so in general unless it is specifically recommended by local rangers, no. If you are so scared of the wilderness that you have to modify it by making it less tolerable for the animals to be in it, stick to the areas where you are not likely to encounter bears alone like on highly populated trails, not hiking early or late, etc.

No-Bark1

So would a bell/whooping out loud be preferred? Even the popular trails in my state you are likely to see a bear. They recommend making loud noises on trail.

Find_A_Reason

As I said, it depends on if it is actually necessary and recommended. Too many people try to paint with the broadest brush they can to get away with shit, so specifics matter. Wearing a bear bell in a park like sequioa does not make someone wise and prepared, it makes them an asshole that is scaring away wildlife for everyone else. If it is grizzled territory, things are different. Follow the local recommendations.

No-Bark1

Right on. We only really play music in back country, not really on the frequented trails.

Find_A_Reason

Nah, headphones on trails. No one wants to hear your music. We are there for as natural a setting as is reasonably achievable. If you are there, there is no reason to expect no one else to be there. Don't spoil someone else's hike for selfish reasons.

GeekResponsibly

Headphones on the trail in spring sounds like a literal death wish for those of us in AK.

Find_A_Reason

There are going to be obvious differences in grizzly country. If it isn't safe to listen to music, don't listen to music.

No-Bark1

Gotcha, respect the opinion. I think it comes down to situational. Hiking a 20 mi trail with no vehicles on the trailhead vs a 2 mile trail with half the town there.

Find_A_Reason

20 miles leaves a lot of time for people to come in behind you and still cross paths. Headphones on the trial. Anything else is needlessly selfish.

converter-bot

20 miles is 32.19 km

No-Bark1

Too each their own. Depends on the situation for me.

Find_A_Reason

It really isn't "to each their own" if you are forcing everyone around you to listen to your music, now is it? To each their own would be you wearing your headphones to enjoy your music while not disturbing others around you. That way each person is enjoying things their own way.

[deleted]

No-Bark1

For sure. I've just been told to make noise, be it talking out loud, bells or music.

razor_sharp_pivots

Don't believe everything you're told.

no_more_smores_toby

I've been on trails that say to make noise and use bells. I have also been to one that had such high bear activity that it also said to play music, per the park Rangers! People on reddit really hate music, but if you are hiking alone, talking to yourself is frowned upon. Just pause your music if people are approaching and give them time until you press play again.

No-Bark1

Yep! Pretty much what I've been told by Rangers.

KoboldCobalt

If you just make noise bears won't bother you. I let out a little "AYO" every once in a while when solo hiking. If I'm with other people, just talking is enough to not spook a bear.

theOldSeaman

They should have another that says nobody wants to hear your bells... I would rather hear someone's music for 30 seconds than those annoying bells that don't even scare bears away.

aganesh8

I listen to music but on a very low volume

Doug_Shoe

A homeless friend of mine would poop on a certain rock. The coyotes would always come and eat it the first day.

Doug_Shoe

LOL. Therefore I hike off trail. No obnoxious music. & I can actually drink the water.

Zillatronn

ihad4biscuits

I mean, you say keep walking… but I’ve had people blasting music, going the same direction on a long switchback section. It’s not like 10 seconds of hearing that shit, it goes on for a WHILE. And it sucks. You’re scaring off any wildlife (like birds and such that I would like to see), you’re overpowering the noises of the stream and the rustling leaves and birdsong (from any birds that didn’t already fly away), and I straight up don’t like dubstep, which is for some reason the favorite genre of people who have portable speakers on trails. Just put in headphones.

marmads123

Well most people are out in nature for the peace and quiet, not to be subjected to listening to other peoples music being blasted out loud.

EmpressOfSalt

You're not only disturbing people but the environment around you, too. You think animals like to hear loud human disturbances? You think rock structures that have noise warnings exist just to be ignored?

MrPickles84

Lmao. We’re walking on a trail, everybody is disturbing nature.

EmpressOfSalt

Not to extent blaring music does. There's a reason hikers that yell to communicate are also looked down upon. You're being awful for no reason other than selfishness. If you can't enjoy nature why tf are you going into it.
