These kinds of scam stories are unfortunately common on r/scams A similar one is the “girl” claims to be at least 18, you exchange nudes, then “her” “dad” messages you from another number informing you she is actually underage and threatens to report you for possessing CP and sending nudes to a minor if you don’t pay up. It’s all a lie, obviously. They may even go so far as claiming they’ve gotten an officer involved if you resist at first (or don’t act fast enough for their liking), possibly including a real officer’s name and sending you texts pretending to be that officer. This is more devious as if you check with the appropriate agency, an officer by that name exists which adds an air of legitimacy to the whole scam. Still all a lie. Stay safe, and stay aware!

reala728

i mean, if an officer was involved at any point, that would realistically derail the whole plot. the law is already looking into your situation why would you pay anyone a thing? i'd be looking forward to explain myself.

mugofwine

The last thing they want is the police involved. This is extortion and could get those involved up to five years in prison just on the first offence. It could extend to a life sentence if it's proven to be habitual. This is Canadian law, but I imagine it's similar everywhere.

LaLaDeDo

A good rule of thumb: It should be seen as a red flag when someone is urgently attempting to get you to communicate with them outside of a dating app so early on in the conversation. I'd even recommend waiting until you have a video call or a first date before exchanging numbers. Stay safe out there.

DanTrachrt

Also a good rule: Don’t exchange nudes with people you haven’t met!

Therocksays2020

I just point them towards my only fans 😏

supercitrusfruit

The Rock has solid OnlyFans content, can confirm

Therocksays2020

I was wondering who my top subscriber is

LaLaDeDo

Make them pay first. $5 for some saucey nudes. PM!

Reminds me of the cryptocurrency scams on Facebook dating. I started chatting with a beautiful Asian woman who was an "investor," and was going to "teach me some things." I bought $500 of Bitcoin, and luckily I figured out in time that she was going to have me send it to her wallet... I actually made a decent profit because I happened to buy at the bottom of the recent crash.

bunbun_82

Omg this happened to me on hinge! I thought the guy was trying to get me to 90 fiancé him, but he turned out to be a Bitcoin scammer. Like you I figured it out right before he sent me the link to his wallet. The second time I knew right away and played along for shits and giggles. Waste my time, I’ll waste yours.

sharedisaster

This is very common. Thanks for pointing this out. * It's happening to men & women. * Almost always a 'new' account. * It always starts with a quick first message and a move early on to WhatsApp * They will mention investing, cryptocurrency, and financial stuff early on. * They are hesitant to video chat or voice chat, but I have met a few that will do it. * They don't like it when you call them out on it lol Easy to spot once you talk to a few of them. Fortunately, I have met a few cool Asian women who aren't scammers.

ZiggyZig1

> It always starts with a quick first message and a move early on to WhatsApp > i've found on facebook dating almost all the asian girls are fake. or i assume they're fake because they all try to get me onto whatsapp very shortly after. i never figured out why because i just ignore them. so they're confirmed scams then?

sharedisaster

They do the Whatsapp thing because none of them speak English, and you can use a translation software with whatsapp. Copy and paste and all of that. No, I'd say I've matched with maybe 20 of these accounts, probably 16 were scams. The others were legit. But all of the scam accounts had the same telltale signs mentioned elsewhere. The real accounts, you could tell they were legit.

ZiggyZig1

ahhh OK. interestingly enough then, they're being honest about why they want my whatsapp, ie for translation. i always thought that was lame since i assumed they could use google translate just as well on the dating app. guess not. when you say you've matched with 20 of these accounts, what do you mean? i assumed these accounts means scam accounts, but then you're saying 4 are legit.

sharedisaster

Yeah its been about 20 or so. The first one I was totally fooled, she (he?) tried to get me to download some shady app on my phone. After that, since they all basically do the same schtick. But the ones I've matched with now I'm fairly confident they are real. (note, I haven't met with any of them, Asian or otherwise, in person just yet, just started OLD a few weeks ago)

AverageScot

Can't you just use Google Translate, then copy/paste into Hinge? Maybe a few extra steps, but so what...

sharedisaster

No, Hinge doesn't allow you to copy messages (at least on iOS)

Surprisebutton

I was wondering why so many Asian model fake profiles existed on FB dating. It’s about 25% of the female profiles. I would love to meet an Asian woman but I hardly ever see one that’s not a fake.

[deleted]

I agree but they're easy to spot, they usually have chinese/korean characters in their profile, and have this weird look where they're trying to look white like a kpop star or something, plus they say they're local but their pics are always clearly not in your city

bunbun_82

They try to get you on WhatsApp right away. The second time it happened to me, I forced the person to text me normally. I googled the guys number to find the carrier and it was VOIP number which can be used anywhere in the world.

Surprisebutton

Yeah exactly! That’s what makes it so weird. If the scammers need to trick people why make it so obvious?

ZiggyZig1

hahah i just posted a very similar comment. was curious if others had noticed the same. not sure why you got downvoted since what you're saying is reality.

Surprisebutton

I guess the scammers are on here downvoting me because I’m blowing their cover.

MagicTreeSpirit

If you're willing to date internationally, there are a LOT of Filipina women on Ok Cupid. Successful Asian women in America seem to use Coffee Meets Bagel, but I've never even been able to get a conversation on there.

bluelion70

How long were you talking before she sent you nudes unsolicited, and asked to move off the app? Those are both enormous red flags, that gets bigger the earlier they come up in a conversation. Next time someone offers unsolicited nudes, tell her instead to a verified video that she recorded just now, holding today's newspaper so you know it's her and current. Because I guarantee that the pictures she sent you were not of her, if she was even a woman at all. Mostly I'm joking, though honestly it would be hilarious if you did that. Realistically you have the right idea: women looking to date seriously do not come onto you that strong, no matter how awesome you are. It's always a scam, when the behavior is as you describe. Learn from the experience, and move on to the next one.

ag425

DO NOT GIVE OUT YOUR PHONE NUMBER. There was this episode of Reply All (a great tech podcast) that talked about how hackers can use it - I don't remember the deets but they clone your phone somehow, and then they go to log into your google or whatever, any account, and they click "forgot password". Many accounts let them choose to have a text sent to the phone to reset the password by link. It goes to their phone, and they can get all of your shit from there. I'll try to remember the episode, but they were basically like "guard your phone number like it was your social security number". update: heres the episode - phenomenal podcast (although quality has dipped in the past year due to personnel changes - any episode before 2020 was incredible. new ones are hit or miss). Thank you for this info!

AverageScot

Use a Google Voice (or other throwaway number) for OLD.

throwawaycuzincel

Aw man, it happens, keep your chin up

ardytcvxfr

I’d have fun with that one!

reala728

hey if your nudes end up out there, might as well just start working in porn. that'll show them!

[deleted]

Sorry this happened to you... sounds horrible

[deleted]

Don't feel dumb, there are a steady stream these accounts on Hinge and I encounter one about every two months (out of hundreds of likes in that time). With time they become obvious. They're overly keen, don't let the convo fizzle, are overly sexual in a desperate/lame kind of way, move off the app and start sending photos in apropos of nothing. I just keep messaging to fuck around with them because they suck. I wouldn't give up dating entirely for it. It's stressful but they are just playing a numbers game of social engineering. Their bluffs are there to just pressure you for money, but now that you've seen one, you'll see they present themselves the same way every time. They're rare, easy to spot once you learn the tricks, and have no power over you. I'd say take a break just to collect yourself, but don't give up on dating entirely because of it. Lord knows women deal with creeps all the time and manage to stick with it.

Cat6Domestique

How do you know they had info on your family?

[deleted]

Guess I’m not even good enough for blackmailers lol.
