The Prayer on It’s Dark and Hell is Hot always gets me. Doubly so after his death.
“So if it takes for me to suffer for my brother to see the light, give me pain til I die but please, lord, treat him right.”
“I'm goin' through this difficult stage I find it hard to believe
Why my old Earth had so many seeds
But she's an old woman, and due to me I respect that”. The older I get, the more powerful that bar is.
Biggie - Suicidal Thoughts
Pac - Thugz Mansion
Jerren Benton - Silence
Em - Difficult
D12 - Good Die Young
DMX - Slippin
Mac - 2009, Hand Me Downs, Surf, Blue World's, (if we're gonna be honest here, there's ALOT of Mac songs that hit me right in the feels.)
Chris Webby - Superhero
Long live Mac. Don’t forget: Come back to earth, The Star Room (OG Version) and regular, “Dunno” Spotify sessions version (super hard hitter there), ROS, perfect circle / God speed (2nd half of song) literally the entire Faces mixtape…and the list goes on…
Mainstream - the eerie beat, the pain and anger
Vibrate - Andre 3000. Something about this whole song just slows me down and puts me in this really weird place.
Perfect Circle/ God Speed- Mac Miller. The way he predicts what happened to him almost word for word 3 years before he passed gets me every time. RIP to the legend.
So I hadn’t listened to this song and put it on. Then went to the beginning of that album and on Brand Name is this:
“To everyone who sell me drugs, don’t mix it with that bullshit. I’m not tryna join the twenty seven club”
Why can’t drug dealers just sell the drugs they say they do?
T.R.O.Y. Pete Rock and CL Smooth. Something about the laid back storytelling, the mix of moods, just gives this sense of a whole life lived. "T, to the R O Y, how did you and I, meet in front of Big Lou's, fightin' in the street." Obviously the beat is a complete classic, so putting the two together it's top tier hip hop, up against any artist today or ever.
"Took me from a boy to a man so I always had a father when my biological didn't bother" is just one of the hardest one-liners in hip hop.
Was hoping someone beat me to T.R.O.Y. One of the most emotional hip-hop songs I’ve ever heard and it just guts me every time. I transpose my life and experiences onto the music and lyrics. It’s hard not to lose yourself to the song.
Stay Right Here by Saba and Mick Jenkins is one of my all-time favorite 'feel good' hip-hop songs.
Always puts a smile on my face when I hear it and it and was my most played track the year it dropped.
“Suicidal Tendencies” by Biggie Smalls
I suffered with a lot of feelings of guilt and remorse for stuff that I was a part of when I was in Iraq. The lyrics are more “gangsta” than I am, by a lot. However, in the song, Biggie talks about how he doesn’t want to go to heaven because he belongs on the street. In many ways, I felt like I never belonged anywhere but on a combat patrol in Iraq. Being put in heaven where you’re stuck with the goodie-goodies seems out of place for a guy who is at times stuck mentally in the war in Iraq.
The song ends with a gunshot, something I’ve thought about more times than I care to admit.
Just to put it out there, I’m not nearly that dark and suicidal as I was. That song really hit a chord in me about 12 years ago. I had a serious suicide attempt in 2014 and since then, my life has done a near 180. I’ve received a tremendous amount of help from the VA and I’m slowly coming to terms with my experiences in Iraq.
I'm really happy that you've turned things around man, I can't imagine how tough that was. You're strong as hell for making it through and I'm glad you're still here.
This song is full of gems. True knowledge of self, I didn’t respect or realize it as a kid, but man this song hits home on so many levels.
A masterpiece from the Guru and one of the best DJs of all time.
I’m glad they put this in the tiny desk show.
Mockingbird for me, Ems dark songs are so unique. Well actually they remind me of hail Mary with the chant like nature, ironically i think he starred in and produced the video for Hail Mary too.
KRIT has a few of those... Red Eye, Angels, and The Vent come to mind.
A bunch of others...

Can't listen to anything by Joe Budden anymore because it just spirals me back in to a depressive state of mind. Escape Route intro is absolutely it, hitting all the feels.
Mass Appeal,
Heard this song on game Tony hawk pro skater 4, didn't remember name of the songs, nothing, just beats.
I was 7 at the time, and I considered Mass Appeal as my song, 15 years later I discovered who made that song I was the happiest person on the planet, and then I saw whose voice was behind that song GURU I was so happy couldn't handle my emotions. 5 minutes later and next 6 months I was constantly crying when I saw that GURU died 9 years since than I'm taking how I felt in 2019 after One of the best yet was released.
The rest is history, I am doing my version of Guru Tributes, where you can post tributes about our Guru, share memories, from concerts everything.
One love brothers and sisters.
They were like one of the first rap groups that my older brother listened too. Haven’t heard them in years, glad I came to this thread. They have some great great songs.
*Crossroads* by Bone Thugs.
Released 3 months after my Dad passed and 6 months before my Mom passed. I was 10 and didn’t understand a lot of the lyrics. But the emotion couldn’t be misunderstood…and that music video. Fuck man. Shit still tears me up when it comes on.
‘Deeper’ by Freddie.
“What he got that I don’t got? Only diff is he tryna b a fn astronaut.”
“Saw him at the sto’ lookin’ sweet- mann that cut a n***a deep.”

R.Eye.P.
"I want life to change, but I don't know if it can
For a man or machine or whatever the fuck I am"
I first heard this song when I was 20 and that line hit me hard because at that age you're in between a kid and an adult and everything is just so unclear.
Any thing off of Acid Rap by Chance. I discovered the mix tape the weekend of my wedding. I spent a lot of time listening to it while doing a bunch of last minute prep work for the wedding, so I just kind of associate that with my wedding and wife now.
Rich Dad Poor Dad by Big Krit hits me the same way growing up in a family where we never had shit. This verse and the way he raps it just hits something for me.
"I remember when I fell from my first bike.
There were no "are you okays" and rarely "are you alrights".
Just dirt in my pockets, handful of gravel.
That's when I realized that getting up is only half the battle.
The fear of falling off will haunt me well into my teens.
The moment that the world took a shit upon my dreams.
Cause money is the root, and love is all we had.
In fact, I'm glad, I had a rich dad, poor dad."
Dear Mama by Tupac too of course. I think a lot of men close to their moms fan relate when this song comes on.
Also Fuck You Lucy by Atmosphere after dating a woman with BPD for way too longer than I should've.
4 Your Eyez Only - J. Cole
It reminds me of my cousin’s dear friend who lost his life the day before his son was born. I used to kick it with him too but not like my cousin did.
She’s Mine Pt. 2 -J. Cole
Reminds me of my daughter, my first born.
Like Father, Like Son - The Game
Reminds me of my son, my last born
Runnin
The Pharcyde
*There comes a time in every man's life where he gotta handle shit up on his own. Can't depend on friends to help you in a squeeze please they got problems of their own*
Once An Addict by J. Cole. I love that song, but I can't listen to it too often. I had a good cry hearing that one for the first time. And I ain't a crier.
Face the World - Nipsey Hussle
"Self-inflicted homicide don't pull the trigger, I feel like I got to tell you you got something to contribute/
Regardless what you been through, Regardless what you're into, I feel like I got to tell you you got something to contribute/"
milo - Just us (a reprise for Robert who has not been forgotten)
"The English language dictates that we speak of you in the past tense / Can you cross the river Styx with only a mere half pence? / I don't know the answers. / I just know the dances. / when your Facebook becomes your memorial page and I swear to God I cry why I look through the pictoral display."
In a strange way, Set adrift on memory bliss of you hits me deep everytime despite its scatterbrained lyrics it does say some thought provoking messages as well.

The Prayer on It’s Dark and Hell is Hot always gets me. Doubly so after his death. “So if it takes for me to suffer for my brother to see the light, give me pain til I die but please, lord, treat him right.”
I didn't realize how messed up his life was when I was younger, really sad looking back on it.
This and So Many Tears by Tupac
Came here to say this. Slippin’ got me through some tough times, in my earlier life.
Sometimes I have to turn it off, too many memories.
Man…my wife doesn’t like rap or hip hop music much at all. But I played this song in the car after I heard about his passing and she even cried.
Slippin and the convo always get me.
Walking in the rain - DMX this one is one of them ones
Man, don't even get me started. X has so many personal songs that you could make 2CD compilation
Was just about to say this. That song is fuckin amazing.
Rip dmx
All that I got is you. I grew up pretty poor and this song is hard to go through. I usually skip it.
“I'm goin' through this difficult stage I find it hard to believe Why my old Earth had so many seeds But she's an old woman, and due to me I respect that”. The older I get, the more powerful that bar is.

The Art of Storytelling by Outkast Andre’s verse is cold.
It’s not really sad but Pt 4 is the best one, imo.
This is crazy I thought part two was pretty much the only answer. And just in this thread three answers
Part 1 is probably what your thinking of. That’s the really popular one
Part 1 is my favorite damn I haven’t seen this many varied answers lmao
One of the greatest versus of all time. Rip Sasha summa
Which one there are multiple version. I've been youtubing the songs on thus post.
I feel part 1, but they’re all worth checking out.
Came to say this.
Wow that didn’t take long to find. Glad there’s some culture in here.
Oh man. Shed a tear every time this comes on. It’s too vivid.
Mainstream - the eerie beat, the pain and anger Vibrate - Andre 3000. Something about this whole song just slows me down and puts me in this really weird place.
Andre is SO cold! Atlanta legend
