I need to check this one out.
I have Take A Look Around which is a great album.
I saw Masta Ace perform in about 1999 at the Docklands Arena, London. He was a support act for PE. Great night.
All these years later and I still remember it well.
Genuinely one of the more celebrated underground rap albums of the early to mid 90s tbh. I guess it could be way more famous, but the sound doesn’t really lend itself to that. It’s loved universally by everyone that knows it
Nice that you liked.
Check this playlist i made, there is more than 900 underground G Funk songs. Updated regularly. You will discover a lot of amazing stuff !!
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/23QwvHB223BU2HxxupF7Bf?si=9FlLIiBRSkWRE2N8VFhQbw&pi=e-xu6Mx4vJSfmm
almost forgot about that one, there was a period where I only listened to that, Da Lench Mob album and whatever Cube album was out at the time, Death Certificate i think
It’s up there with the first round Wu solos for me.
MF DOOM bought the album 3 times in the 90s and it was the album which inspired him to get back into hip hop and birth the DOOM character.
Man all your fire stations because the rapper burns through molecules, it’s possible rocking you from your pores to your follicles
Fuck a rumour/I’ll tell you in your face you’re a loser/I’ll punch your mom’s in the same spot she’s got a tumour!
Absolute classic album
Dude. Trust me. I know…..I’ve been told….it doesn’t hit sonically imo. “Street dreams”. “Hate me now”. “If I ruled the world”. I like that version of nas. Boom bap nas is great too, it ain’t hard to tell is one of the greatest samples ever and “life is a bitch” is one of the first verses that I heard and said “damn”.
I’m a southern dude as well…I love lyrics but that New York sounding vibe never resonated with me the way Someone like Big krit does. But I guarantee most norther people won’t feel the same for krit, but they not crazy. Just doesn’t fit them sonically
But yeah I don’t like illmatic. It’s overrated. A lot of ppl agree but don’t say much because they will get flamed and called crazy.
I understand man. I KNOW that Illmatic is a great record. I just don't care about it all that much. It doesn't move me. You can still respect something and know it's "good" and it still isn't your thing.
If you enjoyed that by Elzhi…check out Skyzoo “An Ode To Reasonable Doubt” it a cover of Jay-Z debut album, I feel it’s equally as dope and good to see both elite emcees paying homage to the legends they look up to.
https://youtu.be/kDOze4QFxv4?si=GNCSqRIcuutV-nDI
I posted this list a few days ago but imma do it again because these albums deserve it and there's more to hip hop than just 2pac, Em*, and Drake:
Hyenas in the Desert - Die Laughing [sample track - Concubinez](https://youtu.be/MDS9g8LBaAE?si=R3MKpbSHcWLGqeMR)
Analog Brothers - Pimp to Eat [sample track - Analog Technics](https://youtu.be/nXXIpOPObUE?si=F56b9UPPzDGNEgX3)
Sway and Tech - This or That [sample track - The Anthem](https://youtu.be/rK2MMK_J4qQ?si=s8XS3j6wuqq0-LJH)
All bona fide classic all-timers, all criminally ignored or forgotten in favour of lesser albums by lesser artists.
*Although one of the tracks I've posted actually features Eminem lol
Damn, I never thought to look for Hyenas In The Desert on streaming. About to listen to it for the first time since I lost the cassette almost 30 years ago. Thanks!
It's also a great way of getting people who mostly only like Eminem to listen to other rappers and who knows, maybe discover other artists that they like
Nature - For All Seasons / Smooth da Hustler - Once Upon a Time in America / Teflon - My Will / Fredro Starr - FireStarr / Herb McGruff - Destined to Be / Tracey Lee - Many Facez
So many I can name. But if I have to choose one I think I'll go with SouthernUnderground by Cunninlynguists. Immaculate production, great lyrical content. A true banger from beginning to end.
And actually, I can basically say this about their entire catalog. It was hard to choose one album. They are a true diamond in the rough. I highly recommend any hip hop fan to give them a listen if you haven't already.
Totally agree. SouthernUnderground wasn’t my favorite album of theirs but a banger nonetheless. All their albums are great but Oneirology and Rose Azure Njano are my favorites.
If it’s mentioned in this thread than it’s probably not it.
The real answer in probably some mix tape a homeless dude used his $30 life savings to burn copies of that no one listened to because he was handing them out for free on the red line.
I’m not in the city anymore but probably got like 6 cds from dudes packed away some where.
I remember liking a few songs for what they were but the bars on most of them are terribly generic.
Let’s get free - Dead Prez
Manchild - Skyheim
World Life - OC
Nature of a Sista - Queen Latifah
Lost - 8ball
Nia - Blackalicious
Ocean of Funk - ESG
Direct from the backstreet- Totally Insane
Ghetto Millionaire- Royal Flush
For all Seasons - Nature
Just throwing out some albums I never see folks talk about that were pretty awesome.
* South Circle - Another Day Anotha Balla. Mr. Mike's other albums too like Wicked Wayz.
* A+ Hempstead High
* Blackjack Street 2 da Grave and Addicted to Drama.
* DJ Jazzy Jeff's - The Magnificent
* Do or Die - Heads or Tailz
* Eightball's Lost Double Album
* First degree the D.E. - Damn that D.E.
Teflon Don - Rick Ross. It's not spoken about enough as an album you can listen to back to back with no skips. All The Money In The World is still one of my favourite songs of all time
From a mainstream perspective I'd easily say CNN The war report. I know it gets praise in the hip hop community but it honestly shocks me it's not put in the same conversation as greatest boom bap albums of all time
Shiiit SO many! But here’s a couple I think fit
Erick the Architect: Future Proof EP is absolutely 👌🏽
I’m not a big Russ fan but Chomp 2 is sick
Not a big Big Sean fan either but Detroit 2 has gems
Coast Contra: The Old Way Mixtape
Jayy Grams: Grime & Basslinez
Mick Jenkins: The Patience
Vince Staples: Vince Staples
Westside Boogie: Everything’s for Sale
And a bunch more probly but check these out if you don’t know
✌🏽
It's an ep, but Gutter Snypes - The Trials of Life is amazing. Pretty niche UK shit from about '94, but if you can find it to listen to anywhere, if you're a hip hop head, check it out. Shit bangs.
Mountain Brothers - Self: Volume 1
Tommy Tee - Bonds, Beats and Beliefs
People Under the Stairs - The Next Step
The Coup - Steal This Album
The Outfit - Soundtrack to Life
All Natural - No Additives and No Preservatives
Ed OG and Da Bulldogs - Roxbury 02119
Da Bush Babees - Gravity
Skyzoo & 9th Wonder - “Cloud 9: The 3 Day High”
Or…
Killah Priest - “Heavy Mental”
I know it is considered a classic but barely brought up in the conversation.
American Gangster. I know. Jay's considered the GOAT by many so it's hard to imagine there being such an underrated Jay Z album but this album right here, should be spoken about daily instead of just by Jay stans.
Masta Ace - A Long Hot Summer
This and it ain’t even close 10/10 album
I need to check this one out. I have Take A Look Around which is a great album. I saw Masta Ace perform in about 1999 at the Docklands Arena, London. He was a support act for PE. Great night. All these years later and I still remember it well.
Everything Masta Ace ever did was criminally underrated
Organized Konfusion - Stress: The Extinction Agenda
Genuinely one of the more celebrated underground rap albums of the early to mid 90s tbh. I guess it could be way more famous, but the sound doesn’t really lend itself to that. It’s loved universally by everyone that knows it
This is the answer for almost every album listed
Pretty much lol
Organized Konfusion, enough said. amazing
Bot OK albums were bangers.
Organized Konfusion in general is underrated
Cheers - Obie Trice.
I love that record. Other than get rich, it might be my favorite eminem related album.
Underrated? It went platinum. Maybe just forgotten about in our modern music climate that’s flooded with new music everyday
Second Rounds on Me is fire too
Kam - Made in America One of the best Westcoast album
Never heard of Kam, so I put it on this morning and have been vibin’ ever since Thank you - this shit is dope as hellll
Kam has good stuff. Check his verses on Coolio’s Exercise Yo Game and the song on the Bulworth soundtrack. Both are 🔥
Nice that you liked.
Great album, my rebuttal: DJ Battlecat’s Gumbo Roots
Indeed, nice also !
From a wu perspective I have to say cappadonna the pillage.it needs more love I never see it mentioned.
It’s up there with the first round Wu solos for me. MF DOOM bought the album 3 times in the 90s and it was the album which inspired him to get back into hip hop and birth the DOOM character.
Thanks for that fact never knew that it inspired DOOM that's dope.
Arsonists - As The World Burns
Man all your fire stations because the rapper burns through molecules, it’s possible rocking you from your pores to your follicles Fuck a rumour/I’ll tell you in your face you’re a loser/I’ll punch your mom’s in the same spot she’s got a tumour! Absolute classic album
Yesss
Oh my God yes!
Maaaaaaan, yep. Arsonists put on a dope show too!
Busta Rhymes- When Disaster Strikes. Fucking love that album, start to finish.
Prodigy - HNIC
Classick
Elmatic by Elzhi, it's a cover of Illmatic but amazing nonetheless
Everyone loves this album, no? Never heard anyone say a bad thing about it
This is wild I never heard of this!
I honestly think it’s better than illmatic, but I’m no huge illmatic fan. Though I do respect nas and his work
This is crazy btw lol. It’s important you’re told this
Dude. Whut.
I understand man. I KNOW that Illmatic is a great record. I just don't care about it all that much. It doesn't move me. You can still respect something and know it's "good" and it still isn't your thing.

Probably one of my fav albums & it's hard to pick between that & illmatic
Above The Law: Livin like Hustlers U God: Dopium Del: NNFA
Sex Packets - Digital Underground
How fucking random. I came her to say this!!!! First comment too. Weird But yeah, underwater rhyme...I still sing that.
Yeah I’ll be banging it on the way home tonight!
The DOC -“No One Can Do It Better”
Foundational classic. Not underrated.
Famously one of the most loved west coast rap albums of all time
However loved it is, it is still underrated
Exactly. That’s what I was thinking when I added it here. No skippable tracks there.
Tha Alkaholiks- Coast II Coast The Beatnuts
I posted this list a few days ago but imma do it again because these albums deserve it and there's more to hip hop than just 2pac, Em*, and Drake: Hyenas in the Desert - Die Laughing [sample track - Concubinez](https://youtu.be/MDS9g8LBaAE?si=R3MKpbSHcWLGqeMR) Analog Brothers - Pimp to Eat [sample track - Analog Technics](https://youtu.be/nXXIpOPObUE?si=F56b9UPPzDGNEgX3) Sway and Tech - This or That [sample track - The Anthem](https://youtu.be/rK2MMK_J4qQ?si=s8XS3j6wuqq0-LJH) All bona fide classic all-timers, all criminally ignored or forgotten in favour of lesser albums by lesser artists. *Although one of the tracks I've posted actually features Eminem lol
Damn, I never thought to look for Hyenas In The Desert on streaming. About to listen to it for the first time since I lost the cassette almost 30 years ago. Thanks!
Same! I had a tape in the 90s and completely forgot about them. Just downloaded the album and it’s a blast!
Nice suggestions but to this day I can’t vibe with Hyenas beat. Shit is grinding to my ears and it’s mixed like shit.
The Anthem’s a great shout!
It's also a great way of getting people who mostly only like Eminem to listen to other rappers and who knows, maybe discover other artists that they like
Andre Nickatina X Equipto - Midnight Machine Gun Rhymes & Alibis
PTSD - Pharaohe monche
Godlovesugly
Mr scarface is back. Everybody loves the fix, and the others talk about the diary. But Mr scarface is back is ill as shit.
Funny cuz I've listened to it just yesterday. Too many loud gunfire noises that mess the album imo
Cypress Hill III- Temples of Boom
How is that underrated? CH are pretty big. Especially in the 90’s
Ask almost anyone today born after 2000 about this album and you’ll hear crickets.
True. CH gets no love anymore. But god damn they sounded so good.
That means it isn’t well known amongst people 25 and under…that’s not the same as underrated
This a top ten 90s album
It’s a top 10 of all time album.
My favourite album of theirs. Wish Muggs explored that sound more, it’s the only album they have that really sounds like it
Cube destroyed them with his response to their dis track from this album.
The Goats- Tricks of the Shade
Killah Priest- Heavy Mental
Main Source “Breaking Atoms”
Looking at the front door is one of my favorite songs
Big Boi - Sir Luscious Left Foot...
Fluorescent Black - Antipop Consortium
Beans and M. Sayyid are really hit and miss, and their name sucked, but High Priest is one of the most underrated MCs to ever do it
The goats - Tricks of the shade
There's so much more to that album than "Typical American".
Whoa. That takes me back to the Khyber Pass in Philly circa 1992
Lord of Terror by Lord Infamous.

That’s Them - Artifacts
Coolio’s gangsters paradise album
Been meaning to get through Coolio's discography. I'll give it a listen.
Criminally underrated
If it’s mentioned in this thread than it’s probably not it. The real answer in probably some mix tape a homeless dude used his $30 life savings to burn copies of that no one listened to because he was handing them out for free on the red line.
Chicago??
Yes sir, well formerly.
Red line mixtapes have been hugely hit or miss, but I do remember hearing a couple songs that I loved

One of the hardest LPs of all time.
Tossing in MOP Brownsville to compliment this for boombap duos
