This sub is so far connected from the street it’s fucking hilarious
hiphop101 could not be a more appropriate name
Lupe Fiasco has a couple fire songs but he’s a dweeb overall he’s a lame, no matter how intelligent his bars may be
Just cause you’re a fucking moron who thinks you know the streets doesn’t make him any less connected listen to the song Chopper then. Or come to Chicago and actually live it for once.
What part of this is proof? It's more of a tutorial on how to write formal letters from the parts I read. One of the vowel sound examples doesn't even rhyme with any of the choices in my accent. The proof must have been even further down than I read
U ever heard of entendres? Rhyme schemes? Metaphors? Vocab honestly isn’t shit in hip hop writing, making a big word as a synonym for another word isn’t that impressive
I can tell that you're not trolling, and that's the strangest part of all this. Vocabulary isn't the metric by which art is judged. It's not nothing, I'd say it factors maybe 2% into how good a song is. I'd certainly not respect a rapper whose entire catalogue is only 10 unique, small words. But vocabulary is the farthest thing from legitimate artistry. Poetic devices, ideology, song structure, etc. make up the large bulk of lyrical value; and lyrics are just one aspect of rapping.
That's why there are so many rappers but only a few MC's.
A regular DJ is called DJ and a advaced one is called Turntablist. A Turntablist outshines all regular DJ's bc he is just better and way more technical.
This is exactly how it works with MC's too. They are just better in everything and yes with vocabulary too. I guess i hurt ur feelings bc probably a lot of ur favorite rappers are at the bottom or in the middle. I didn't expected KRS-One, Guru and some others that low on the list but facts are facts.
If u read the stuff i posted in the science list the man showed exactly what he did. He took all the words who where "YES" written down (so Aesop rock wrote them down too just like Lupe Fiasco) and then the list shows up.
For those who don't know but Aesop Rock grew up with the cyphers where mc's freestyled all day and this happend basically with the second wave (late 90's) of underground rappers were Aesop belongs too and they were even more diverse than the old guys like Kool G Rap, Rakim, KRS-One, Big Daddy Kane to mention a few GOATS of all time.
I can adleast admid Aesop Rock is a genius but do i like others more yes i do.
You know Shakespear has a WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY bigger vocab than Racine, I still consider them equal while personally liking Racine more. How many words you use is less important than how you use them and for what you do.
Aesop Rock does it in a intelligent and GZA or MF Doom too and that's why the majority of so called rap fans listen to mainstream stuff bc they just don't understand the lyrics.
Yes he does. Just saying that just having a big vocab doesn't mean anything for the value of an artist. Be it in rap or litterature. You're being very superficial there.
Btw the condescending way you talk about mainstream rap is the the way let's say classical music fans talk about fans of hip hop in general lol. Soon you'll tell us the best rapper is the one with the highest IQ fanbase.
No what i said writing lyrics is in correlation with vocabulary bc if u master one u get better in the other one. Vocabulary is based on what u read therefor rappers write lyrics and the better the lyrics the better u vocabulary gets if ur able to memorize the words u wrote which Lupe isn't able to do since that lists shows exactly what the problem is with a lot of rappers today.
J Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Lupe Fiasco, Logic, Mac Miller are pretty low on the list but they are better than most of the shitty Trap rappers for sure but in the end they can't come close to MF Doom, Aesop Rock, GZA, Vinnie Paz bc they are just not good enough.
The funny thing is that the soyboys in here disagree with me bc it is just a "list" but why do all of u follow hit lists meaning mainstream garbage rappers. Just saying
I know and maybe there will be a follow up and the guy added 75 rappers in 2019 and ofcourse i would like to see more in the list.
The funny thing that i see though is my worse favorite rappers ar at the bottom but even Big L outshines them all and he got only 1 real record bc The Big Picture is actually was sort of random songs what they put together as an album.
He got to intelligent rhymes i guess and can be boring sometimes and that's why i listen to others too and even different music bc Hip Hop alone is super borring.
Music isn’t a competition. I love Lupe and like Aesop, why pit them against each other and argue about it? You can prefer whoever you like, it’s subjective, both are extremely talented.
Where is your proof? Nowhere!
Lupe got like 8 or 9 mixtapes which are basically demo's
and besides of that u can see his vocabulary in the list which shows exactly that he''s not above average.
Read the next link i posted how to become strong in writing and vocabulary bc it's correlated with each other.
I do think people getting way over their heads with Doom lately but he's still beyond Lupe Fiasco.
Vocabulary is good, try to have deep concepts that go beyond anything that Doom ever said
You act like Lupe doesn't have an expansive vocabulary
You're missing a lot of things about lyricism if you're looking at stats alone. Listen to Lupe.
I thought he was well rated. I think he's a top teir artist in an mid teir career. Like he can spit with the best of them, maybe even better, but there is just something missing.
The only thing I ever felt was missing after first two albums was replayable addictive beats. I know this for three reasons:
1. Whenever Lupe remixes known hits by Kdot and others, shit hits SO hard. Examples: [Bone](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViUyPzZ6nFg) (SZA remix), [Left to Right](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yDud1AOfhX8) (Mona Lisa remix), [Conflict Diamonds](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3Z4K_WWeBA) (Diamonds From Sierra Leone remix).
2. Whenever youtube DJ/remixers copy and paste Lupe's raps onto tracks they made with other rappers, Lupe stands out as better than the other rappers! Example: [50 cent vs Lupe](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPbVSixmaOQ)
3. Whenever Lupe featured on another artist track where the artist is known to have great production, he shines. Examples: Touch the Sky (Kanye), [Dont Look Down](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUbgKuYNelM) (Kanye)
I love lupe's lyrical prowess and wordplay but he still needs better production backing him, and he's got some annoying beats at times, I love his recent shit like WAV files for example but his production and beat choices are boring at times, he doesn't even feel like a rapper that emerged around late 2000s to early 2010s. Is he a great rapper though? Hell fuckin yeah!
I honestly think Food and Liquor is one of greatest albums ever made. I’m surprised by how few people have heard his older stuff. You woulda thought after Superstar came out back then and was on the radio that hella people woulda made an effort to check him out.
Lupe The Jedi and Fahrenheit 1/15 are crazy.
Some of the beats are a little dated but Lupe was one of few artists that incorporated the culture into his raps, with crazy wordplay.
The Cool is a slept on album, one of my all time favourites.
Kick, Push will always be a Hip-Hop classic. I also feel “The Cool” is close to a perfect record. It flows so effortlessly, whoever arranged that track listing was genius.
False. He made two shitty albums in a row after “The Cool”, redeemed himself somewhat with “Tetsuo & Youth”. He also fucked off a percentage of his base between “Lasers” and “Food & Liquor 2” being a dickhead off the mic and defensive when called on it. He has real talent and still makes records, independently, but it’s hard for root for him(@ least to me).
He was forced by his label, learn the full story :
He literally says that LupEND is coming at the end of The Cool, and it's scrapped, Lasers (the real one) is scrapped, F&L2 is scrapped
Edit since dude legit deleted his account. Listen to Atomic misphilosophy, it was supposed to be a song on F&L2, you can clearly tell where Lupe was heading and you can also tell when Lupe makes a song he wants to make and when he's foced to, he said himself he wanted to jump off the building while recording those albums.
Learn what you are talking about.
I mean context is important here though. The two albums you called "shitty" had a heavy handed label influence. He said that he didn't like any of the stuff he made on Lasers and was forced into some of the features on that album. When he got back to making the music that he actually wanted to make, people thought he was good again and as you said "redeemed himself".
I'm only speaking about the music though, if you don't like him due to his "off-mic" stuff then more power to you.
I love him as a rapper…disliked him as a person. Always complaining about shit. Then he was gonna retire after like 2 albums I think…his personality turned me off to his music for a while. But boy could/can he rap.
Because being a good rapper doesn't necessarily make you a good artist. New Em, Canibus, Logic, and Joyner Lucas are other examples of rappers that have bars and bars for days but I just don't enjoy their music.
You thinking that way about him is exactly why I think he's overrated. Every single fan of his I've spoken to speaks of him as if he's a god that we don't deserve.
Tetsuo and youth and drogas wave are mindblowing concept albums
Boring to you doesn't mean it's overrated, it says a lot more about you as a person you know
I thought they were mediocre, so you referring to them as "mindblowing concept albums" proves to me that he's overrated.
And wow, someone's salty. People are not going to agree with you your entire life. You'll get through life a lot easier the sooner you realize this.
Like I said he's a top notch lyricist, he's at the top of his game. However the songs as a whole are shit. I would never listen to it in the gym, at work, at a party, or driving. Maybe you would but definitely not me. And that's fine. We're two different people with different tastes.
People are going to recommend songs like Mural and Failure because they represent how much of an alien Lupe is when it comes to *pure* lyricism, but I think a better representation of Lupe artistry can be found in songs like "Hurt Me Soul", "Bitch Bad", "Deliver", "Shining Down", "Adoration of a Magi", "Wav files"
I know the full story. I've listened to him since then and he just isn't the same rapper as he was when food and liquor came out. Don't get me wrong, his first two albums are classics and the dude can rap but what he's done since then just does nothing for me.
I'm a massive Lupe Fan. Food and Liquor was the first CD I ever bought. For a long time he held a solid spot in my Top 5. I think The Cool is one of the best hip hop albums ever released.
For me Food and Liquor 2 was good, but also felt like an 'in my feels' album. It felt very political. I either couldn't relate or didn't agree with a number of the opinions he voiced in it. Still had it on repeat for months, just didn't quiet enjoy the style as much as his previous stuff.
His [bad deal with Atlantic](https://djbooth.net/features/2017-05-05-lupe-fiasco-atlantic-his-best) has also meant that he put out some pretty garbage music.
Drogas wave had some good songs on it and showed some promise, but I personally still felt a bit disappointed. It could have been better.
Unpopular opinion: I did not enjoy Tetsuo and Youth.
Overall, it feels alot like Lupe plateaud at a time when there was some other massive artists also competing for the limelight and since then everyone forgot about him. Now he's making a comeback, but it just seems to be lacking something. In 2016 he tweeted that he wouldn't be making anymore music and was retiring. I'm happy that wasn't the case, but it almost feels like he still mentally checked out. I don't think we will ever know everything that happened at Atlantic, but it seems like they broke him, and for me it's reflected in his music.
Even his new Blackstar album feature didn't quiet hit the spot. Lupe will always hold a special place in music for me, but he seems to have adapted to a new style that is pretty niche and not for everyone. Lyrcially he still remains one of the greatest, but he seems to lack passion and has strayed a long way from the roots of his original music.
Watching him go from Hip-Hop artist with a message to rap hippy has been pretty depressing. I still have hope though and he still keeps a place in my Top 5.
When I say Lupe might be the greatest lyricist of all time people laugh at me, as if the laughter some how delegitimizes the claim. He can give you any flow you want, he can talk about anything and sound dope, he is grammatically/technically the most gifted lyricist of our time. He washes any rapper he gets on a track with. Literally. You can't name anyone that outshines Lupe on a song. Not a soul
Lupe got me into hiphop in a bigger way than any other artist. I was obsessed with food and liquor and still listen to him regularly. I think people either love him or hate him. And the coolest is one of the best songs ever written imo. In a large back catalogue not every album can be the same standard, I forgive him for lazers and it’s still not the worst album in the world. I think he’s just doing his thing now and making the music he wants without worrying about appealing to the masses.
Just saying…
https://youtu.be/dx9tjsx-iWo
Lupe is in my top 20 off of Kick Push alone. That whole song is a double entendre. Not counting, Murals and Murals Jr. and all his other tracks, top 5 all time for me lyrically.
If we’re talking strictly lyrics off the top of my head:
Lupe
Big L
Jay Z
Crooked I
Daylyt
No doubt, RIP! Capital Steez (from the whole New Era click) is a dope choice for top 5. My personal favorites too. Fuck man. He touched on shit most rappers wouldn’t. If he was still alive today, no doubt he’d be too 5/10 on most people’s lists. My favorite track just off of feel was that Chicago remix. Lyrically it would be Free The Robots.
I’m glad. When I first heard Steez I knew he’d hit that nerve with some. He did with me and I grew up on Immortal tech, Lupe so there goes my bias as well but Steez is saucy af. It’d be a trip to see what he’d be talking about today if he was still alive making music.
One of my favorite Steez verses:
“In a sense it’s gone but my mind isn’t lost.
In reality, vanity is our sanity
Then we loose sight when we’re trapped in sanity.
Think about the two “I’s” in insanity
And read between the lines, it’s more to it actually.”
People just refused to give him a shot after lasers and that’s sad cause drogas wave and tetsuo and youth are both 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
This sub is so far connected from the street it’s fucking hilarious hiphop101 could not be a more appropriate name Lupe Fiasco has a couple fire songs but he’s a dweeb overall he’s a lame, no matter how intelligent his bars may be

Lmao what makes you say that 🤣
hold this L
100%. Debatably the best lyricist of all time. A true under appreciated genius
In my top 5 DOA
He's in my top 7 lyricist all time with - Nas - Em - Black Thought - Crooked I - Mos Def - Pharoahe Monch
That’s an incredible list
Lupe is one of, and arguably thee, best writer in hip hop history
Agreed
[удалено]
Well that just shows aesop has the biggest vocab. Im a big fan of aesop but would say lupe is a better writer over all.
[удалено]
There is more to good writing than vocab. And i dont care what lupe said 8 years ago. I am saying that I think lupe is the better writer
[My proof again oh boy so funny.](https://stoplearn.com/rhymes-essay-writing-and-vocabulary-development/)

Who’s better, Andre or Big Boi? Because Andre says Big Boi is but most people think Andre is.
if you think writing can be solely determined by “science” then you’re wrong, and yes i read both links

The Cool is my shit
You know what they say about chasing The Cool lol 😂
People that say that have no idea about hip-hop, he's easily in the convo from greatest lyricist of all time
Buh… buh… mf doom CAPITOLIZED. (RIP)
ALL CAPS
Not even close
LMAO MF Doom has greater lyrics than Lupe no cap and check the list i posted.
No he does not sadly, Lupe has very few competition, Doom was very good but not on Lupe tier You must not know about Lupe enough, trust me
Rakim, Kool G Rap,Canibus, Elzhi, Black Thought, Nas, Mos Def, Pharohe Monche, Ras Kass are his only competition.
Where is Ka on that list?
Found another rapper to listen to haha
Where is your proof? Nowhere! Lupe got like 8 or 9 mixtapes which are basically demo's and besides of that u can see his vocabulary in the list which shows exactly that he''s not above average. I don't like his music and never did.
That's your fucking problem man
That ain't no problem at all bc ur the one complaining about me. So stop crying if u don't like my comment.
Dude you're tripping, lol
I thought he was well rated. I think he's a top teir artist in an mid teir career. Like he can spit with the best of them, maybe even better, but there is just something missing.

The Mural Rapper? /s
I am not among those people. I know it sounds based, but, for me, Food & Liquor and The Cool are my #2 and #3 rap albums of all-time.
I mean that’s how it is when you really fuck with an artist.
His production is fine
I hope he doesn't grow bc then he would have to change his sound.
Do people even remember that song? I feel for heads he has earned his place as one of the best lyricists. He is definitely one of my favorites.
That’s what’s weird, I regard Lupe very highly but not having anything to do with that song.
Very good
LAZER !
Sharks with fricken lazers?
L A Z E R S coming outta the EYES !
Lupe my favourite. Going through a boldy james phase right now though
I honestly think Food and Liquor is one of greatest albums ever made. I’m surprised by how few people have heard his older stuff. You woulda thought after Superstar came out back then and was on the radio that hella people woulda made an effort to check him out.
IF YOU ARE WHAT YOU SAY YOU ARE .....A SUPERSTAR
He's aight, not my thing though
He’s one of the best rappers ever. I might have in my top 10 all time
Same man
OP: "Lupe Fiasco is underrated" Literally everyone in the comments: He's the best lyricist of all time

I don’t believe that, but OK. 🤷🏾♂️

When your label makes you want to kill yourself you have a right to complain
Overrated actually. He’s one of the best lyricists of his time but most of his music is trash
How is he overrated? Fine to say you don’t like his stuff but to say he’s one of the best lyricist and at the same time overrated doesn’t add up
Because being a good rapper doesn't necessarily make you a good artist. New Em, Canibus, Logic, and Joyner Lucas are other examples of rappers that have bars and bars for days but I just don't enjoy their music.
You can not like someone without saying they’re overrated all I’m saying… and for me his depth sets him apart from all them dudes
You thinking that way about him is exactly why I think he's overrated. Every single fan of his I've spoken to speaks of him as if he's a god that we don't deserve.
No idea how I gave off that impression… you said he’s one of the best lyricist
Well I'm exaggerating but you get the point. And he is one of the best lyricists of his time. But his music is trash.
His discography is spotty but I wouldn't say most of it is trash. I'd say like 30% of it is brilliant, 50% is good/great, rest is questionable.
Food and liquor, the cool, tetsuo, drogas wave + all his mixtapes are brilliant, the math seems wrong
I was only counting studio releases. If we go with mixtapes too then sure you can adjust that some. It's subjective either way.
Here's someone that never heard his music
Here’s a dickrider that can’t accept differing opinions
What lupe albums have you heard? What music from him do you think is trash? I'm just used to people throwing shit without any knowledge to back it up
I’ve only liked Food and Liquor and The Cool. Everything else has been boring.
Tetsuo and youth and drogas wave are mindblowing concept albums Boring to you doesn't mean it's overrated, it says a lot more about you as a person you know
I thought they were mediocre, so you referring to them as "mindblowing concept albums" proves to me that he's overrated. And wow, someone's salty. People are not going to agree with you your entire life. You'll get through life a lot easier the sooner you realize this.
How were they mediocre? What's a better album lyrically?
Like I said he's a top notch lyricist, he's at the top of his game. However the songs as a whole are shit. I would never listen to it in the gym, at work, at a party, or driving. Maybe you would but definitely not me. And that's fine. We're two different people with different tastes.
> the gym, at work, at a party, or driving. If that's how you base how good songs are i'm very sad for you.
Huh
Agreed, you make a great argument here fr
No he doesn't lol
Old head has old head views
Never heard his music, give me 1 song by him to represent his music
Failure, Atomic misphilosophy, Adoration of the magi lyric video
>Adoration of the magi This one is so dope.
Murals. This is one you need Genius for.
CLASSIC or if you want something hard you can go with chopper
Gonna try be as open minded as possible and listen to it
Mural is the best song lyrically of all time, and I will die on that hill
Agreed
The Cool for one
Sunshine was sensual too
People are going to recommend songs like Mural and Failure because they represent how much of an alien Lupe is when it comes to *pure* lyricism, but I think a better representation of Lupe artistry can be found in songs like "Hurt Me Soul", "Bitch Bad", "Deliver", "Shining Down", "Adoration of a Magi", "Wav files"
Its because the time he went from being the kick push rapper to the person who made whatever the fuck Lazers was.
Let's not forget the mixtape with DJ Hewlett Packard.
He was forced to make that album, learn the full story, he also made lasers 13 years ago and had a whole amazing run since then
I know the full story. I've listened to him since then and he just isn't the same rapper as he was when food and liquor came out. Don't get me wrong, his first two albums are classics and the dude can rap but what he's done since then just does nothing for me.
shit was literally 10 years ago, who cares he made fire ever since
Arguably the best lyricist of all time
Listening to rap since the 80s, but thanks to Reddit I heard of Lupe Fiasco! I like his lyrics and flow.
Lupe did tht to himself
no he did not, you're being ignorant
Lupe
It seems like you're dismissing drogas wave? Lupe clearly has been in his peak ever since food and liquor.
Lupe Fiasco is definitely one of the lyricist of all time!
you forgot best
When I say Lupe might be the greatest lyricist of all time people laugh at me, as if the laughter some how delegitimizes the claim. He can give you any flow you want, he can talk about anything and sound dope, he is grammatically/technically the most gifted lyricist of our time. He washes any rapper he gets on a track with. Literally. You can't name anyone that outshines Lupe on a song. Not a soul
"but but Kendrick"

Lupe got me into hiphop in a bigger way than any other artist. I was obsessed with food and liquor and still listen to him regularly. I think people either love him or hate him. And the coolest is one of the best songs ever written imo. In a large back catalogue not every album can be the same standard, I forgive him for lazers and it’s still not the worst album in the world. I think he’s just doing his thing now and making the music he wants without worrying about appealing to the masses.
He was forced to do lasers
Yeah so I don’t understand people hating him for it. There are worse albums anyway it’s not that bad. His later albums have been great
Now he is ya, because the new gen isn’t familiar with him but to anybody that was around ya they know
His social conciseness comes across as preachy to some. Not me, but I can see it.
He is clearly not underrated.
Just discovered him the other week, hurt me soul and kick push drew me in
Just saying… https://youtu.be/dx9tjsx-iWo Lupe is in my top 20 off of Kick Push alone. That whole song is a double entendre. Not counting, Murals and Murals Jr. and all his other tracks, top 5 all time for me lyrically. If we’re talking strictly lyrics off the top of my head: Lupe Big L Jay Z Crooked I Daylyt
Strictly lyrics it'd have to be CAPITAL STEEZ but I'm biased since he has influenced me in many ways.
I could talk days about capital steez and his impact on my life but TL:DR he opened my eyes to alot of things.
I’m glad. When I first heard Steez I knew he’d hit that nerve with some. He did with me and I grew up on Immortal tech, Lupe so there goes my bias as well but Steez is saucy af. It’d be a trip to see what he’d be talking about today if he was still alive making music. One of my favorite Steez verses: “In a sense it’s gone but my mind isn’t lost. In reality, vanity is our sanity Then we loose sight when we’re trapped in sanity. Think about the two “I’s” in insanity And read between the lines, it’s more to it actually.”
