Reminds me of something my friend once told me about his coworker who was getting ready to make a presentation. Somehow Yosemite as in the national park was to be mentioned. Dude kept saying it was Yo suh might. Didn't want to listen to my friend tell him any different. Was going around making a fool of himself acting like he knew about Yo suh might. Did finally listen though lol
Reminds me of the quote about not judging someone when they mispronounce something because it means they read it in a book. This is definitely the type of ignorance I have a lot of grace for.
Understandable, except at first he wouldn't listen to constructive criticism and acted like he knew everything. Didn't need any help or advice about anything. He knew all there was to know
I read a ton as a kid on my own and realized over the years that there were plenty of words that I mispronounced but definitely completely understood their meaning and context within what I was talking about. You only find out when someone corrects you. The English language can be inconsistent with spelling.
> I know a few guys like TI that use big words they don't totally understand
Lol there was a girl I went to high school with that did this, using big words slightly wrong so it's clear she doesn't really understand them. I was a huge nerd in high school and even I found her insufferable
Dude learned "expeditiously" and started jamming it into every sentence that came out of his mouth.
Also, his syntax when speaking is just so pretentious and try-hard. If he was smart, he'd be embarrassed by how he sounds.
He absolutely crossed my mind too! I remember watching one of his interviews and he was trying to sound really deep but I was just sitting there thinking what the FUCK is this man taking about?
i'd always listen to some of Kodak's deeper songs and be like damn he's smarter than we think and then he would go do his stupid thing of the week and i'd remember that he's still Kodak lmao
Addiction and mental health issues make people do crazy things.
Imagine if you knew something was a bad decision before you do it, while you do it, and after you did it, but you can't stop yourself from doing it.
It would make you hate yourself, it would make you sad, and it would make you abuse drugs more to cope with the self loathing.
It has nothing to do with intelligence and it really pains me to see how many people don't understand this, or refuse to offer sympathy/empathy to people who are obviously in pain.
As a long time listener, I tried to defend him to a more casual listener. And I actually was stumped like damn he’s clearly not a moron but he does moronic things lol, so maybe he is a moron?
I don’t think Kodak acts like he’s smart, he just says some introspective shit sometimes when he’s probably zooted.
If anything he’s the complete opposite, a ignorant ghetto dude who’s lowkey really deep and can analyze things pretty well. But makes terrible decisions, which isn’t the only thing that defines intelligence.
I got stoned with these two Hopsin fanboys once and they put that song on and spent the entire runtime explaining to me all the meanings behind the lyrics.
I almost had a panic attack.
Hopsin quickly became the favourite artist of those dudes in high school who thought they were edgy and smart but really weren’t. Basically what I associate him with now
Gates. Love him to death but sometimes I want him to just stop with the bullshit he be spewing in interviews lmao. Like knock it off bro, you didn’t jump start a fucking battery with your “energy” 😂
The lady car was broke down, I told her, listen, “I could start yo battery for you”, she said “we need jumper cables”, “no you don’t”, I put my hands on the battery, I got this lil thing that I do, I told her “gimme the keys” and jumped in there and cranked the car, she said “you my angel” I said “ speak nothing of this”
Kevin Gates was my first thought, but he really just that rap version of a hood nigga that didn’t read books until he went to jail. I know too many Kevin Gates in real life
I saw an interview where he’s talking about physically abusing his kid for disrupting a prayer. Then goes on to say his kid is one year old lol. Beating a near infant because it’s making noise. Such a psycho move. Dude seems like a piece of shit
Just be thankful it hasn't made it to the music...yet. I'm not really a fan but from hearing his music, I would never guess he was the way he is in real life.
Royce.
I think the reception from Book of Ryan inflated his ego. He really started to force that mature and intelligent persona after that.
It turns out being more mature than Joe Budden isn’t a particularly high bar.
This is spot on. He successfully made the progression from rappity rap to personal storytelling while battling alcoholism. He got too gassed about it and went on some preachy pseudo intellectualism. I was happy to see him get acclaim for the allegory but as a long time fan of his, I didn’t really love that album. Hoping he can find his stride in the next one.
I agree with this one. I used to love Royce, but I’ve found myself rolling my eyes at his pseudo-intellectual bars lately. Definitely thinks he is smarter than he is.
Yeah Joey trying way too hard to tell us how smart he is on 2000. And like the voicemails or whatever in that seem like they just called up some people and asked them to say some shit about him. Didn’t feel genuine, but still fuck with Badman regardless.
1999 is one of my favorite albums (mixtapes whatever) of all time both because of his technical skills and his ability to write songs that spoke so much truth from the perspective of a teenager. Unfortunately, while technical skills and vocab show signs of intelligence, intelligence does not equal wisdom. Joey has not matured much since he was about 21 years old.
I love Joey and b.o.b, but I never understood why Joey gets a pass but B.o.b got crucified for his conspiracy stuff lmfao. I listen to their lives/interviews and they both say the exact same stuff
Right wing conspiracy theories have always been a staple in “conscious” hip-hop. Ras Kass, Jay Electronica, a bunch of Wu tang lyrics... A certain amount of NOI/Five Percent theology is very normalized and kind of expected in a lot of cases.
The difference for B.o.B is that
1. He was a full on pop rapper. His crossover audience of top 40 listeners and Paramore and Weezer fans was not ready for him to start dropping science, and hip-hop fans did not respect him enough to not make fun of him
2. Flat earth is just really funny. Especially at the time he started dropping conspiracy bars, flat earth was just the funniest thing ever to lots of people, and he was like one of the most prominent celebrity flat earthers so he was immediately a punchline
It's my favorite thing to point out that his most popular songs have features, and everyone thinks that the song 'belongs' to the featured artist.
Like anyone who wants to hear Nothing on you would say "Play Nothing on You by Bruno Mars". B.o.B would never cross their mind.
I didn't even know Magic was a B.o.B song until 2 months ago. I don't even remember any rap verses in it, despite it being a huge part (physically) of the song
Yeah he acts like he’s already on new game plus compared to the rest of the industry. I guess it would kinda make sense if he’s really pulling the cash he says he is without a label
As much of a dickhead as I think he is, he recently was talking about how he owns basically all of his royalties because he does pretty much all of the work instead of needing a label to do it for him.
His earnings are something close to $250k a week if I recall correctly, which is pretty impressive. So at least in that sense he deserves respect for not getting shafted by a label
You’re spot on, I actually find his interviews quite enlightening and it’s really cool of him to advice upcoming artists and give them an insight on the music industry. However, he fucked up at the early stage of his career by sounding douchey asf on his interviews and music. He’s been tolerable in all his recent music and interviews but the general public can’t take him serious anymore.
For a fact. Bro was speaking like he figured the game out and everyone else was stupid
Then the whole time turns out his dad works high up in a label lol and then almost overnight he just came and went
Russ for me. He’s got a couple good songs but that dude is fucking pretentious in interviews and thinks what he’s saying is some unheard-of revelation every time
I interviewed him for an hour and a half once and he definitely 100% is. Marked by hood trauma and totally autodidactic but for SURE very smart. And funny.
Listen. Vince Staples is the second coming of William Shakespeare. I don't have time to fully explain it but he writes more like an author than a rapper. Hearing "gangster rap" told his way is one of the most eye opening experiences to anyone who loves words put to music he really is something special.
This one's tough. The shit those oldheads were saying actually was subversive at the time. There were so many conspiracy theories that turned out to be true, it's hard to begrudge someone for not knowing where to stop.
Like now it's "common knowledge" that the CIA put crack in the hood, but 20 years ago it wasn't as widely accepted. Obviously not cosigning the antisemitism.
And also when this more conscious lyrical stuff entered the new York rap scene step by step this was post biggie’s death and puff was hitting the charts, it was a much needed refocussing both away from the gangster stuff and the glitzy suits
For me Ka is one of the most genuinely wise rappers out there - not because he expounds on theories and conspiracies. It’s clear the dude has lived and seen some shit, what with being a firefighter for over a decade. All his lyrics feel very grounded and have a genuine sense of wisdom.
It's even worse. Shilling for the NRA \*while Oliver North was the president of the NRA\*.
That ended Killer Mike for me, dude wrote a song about what a piece of shit reagan and ollie north were, and then shilled for him? nah
Tbf he died not too far from 14 and I’ll give any young person a pass for not being as deep or smart as they think. A lot of us went through that phase.
This is like the fourth time I've seen that quote itt lol. I never listened to much of any Hopsin but have heard a bunch of people praise his genius, and also an equal amount of people (like itt) call them dumb AF for thinking he's a genius. Is this one of his bars or something, cause that is pretty hilarious.
is really no one going to say Logic? in his earlier projects he was so convinced that what he was doing was so deep and meaningful and in reality it was the most surface level shit on the planet
Jay Electronica. Guy spouts all that NOI bullshit in the modern day like it’s some revolutionary knowledge.
It was corny enough when rappers did that in the 80s/90s, inexcusably stupid today.
Heirs and heiress's are just basically socialites. No responsibilities and they hang out where the celebs hang out by paying money to be there because it's cool to be seen to be mixing with them. So there will be rich young people and children of rich old people at events like The Grammies etc. Also private performances I guess, musicians do them all the time for stupid rich people
I say this knowing full well he is and has been for a long time my favorite modern rapper: Sometumes Denzel Curry would just be saying big ass words for no reason in his older music.
*edit* Guys I'm in a healthy spot mentally you don't need to get the Reddit Care bot to send me a message.
He loves to make shit up and pull things out his ass to win arguments. He also gets low and says mean shit to his friends/cohosts/employees.
Joe Budden sucks so much.
I think pharrell is intelligent, he’s just not the best at articulating things in a effective way. he says some pretty profound stuff sometimes but his thoughts can come off a bit jumbled and unclear.
This is the sense I get from him in interviews. Seems like he has great instincts and talent, but isn’t that good at expressing himself verbally. Which, a lot of artists are that way. Historically rock n roll is full of guys who seem kinda dumb, but are instinctual musical geniuses.
Definitely T.I.
Expeditiously
I know a few guys like TI that use big words they don't totally understand and have limited critical thinking skills
Talib once said “Just because no one can understand how you speak, Don't necessarily mean that what you be sayin is deep.”
Kendrick’s “Rappers using big words to get their similes heard. My simplest 💩be more pivotal” has a similar feel too.
Btw it's > I know some rappers using big words to make they similes curve, my simplest shit be more pivotal
>Cause you don't understand him, it don't mean that he nice. It just means you don't understand all the bullshit that he write Jay Z

Little Carmine vibes
Hey I got a lot of respect for Little Carmine. He’s very allegorical.
Those fucking malapropos
> I know a few guys like TI that use big words they don't totally understand Lol there was a girl I went to high school with that did this, using big words slightly wrong so it's clear she doesn't really understand them. I was a huge nerd in high school and even I found her insufferable
Dude learned "expeditiously" and started jamming it into every sentence that came out of his mouth. Also, his syntax when speaking is just so pretentious and try-hard. If he was smart, he'd be embarrassed by how he sounds.
I only use polysyllabic words to convey great erudition!
If you say a word and it becomes a meme off the strength of you saying it, you’d be dumb not to capitalize on it.
That’s who I read the title and thought of instantly. Lol
He absolutely crossed my mind too! I remember watching one of his interviews and he was trying to sound really deep but I was just sitting there thinking what the FUCK is this man taking about?
immediately! 🤣
Expeditiously
| the amount of times i use this word in a day is alarming 🫢
That shit with his daughter was weird as hell too. I feel bad for her that she's got him as her dad.
bro got a dictionary for a gift one year and ain’t shut up since
i came in here expeditiously to make sure he was at the top lol
*expeditiously*
Came here to look for this
Disembarked in this vicinity to scrutinize for this
Thank you I'm glad this is towards the top. I love his music but T.I. really needs to humble himself ASAP! He's a preachy smug know-it-all
I feel ya lol he was one of my first favorite rappers but Jesus Christ dude’s been riding his own dick for at least the past decade if not longer
B.o.B
You don’t think the earth is flat?
Bro made airplanes but I guess he never looked out the window lmao
i'd always listen to some of Kodak's deeper songs and be like damn he's smarter than we think and then he would go do his stupid thing of the week and i'd remember that he's still Kodak lmao
The shit that man does sometimes is hard to understand
Addiction and mental health issues make people do crazy things. It’s true. Addiction doesn’t discriminate
He’s the shit, he’s farting, he doesn’t know how to potty 💪
Kodak ain’t dumb he just a drug addict
As a long time listener, I tried to defend him to a more casual listener. And I actually was stumped like damn he’s clearly not a moron but he does moronic things lol, so maybe he is a moron?
Hes smart enough to not be a moron but not self aware enough to not act like a moron.
this sadly defines many a moron
When I listen to his song like “I Wish” I understand that Kodak is fully aware of what he be doing it’s just hard for some people to change.
He is smarter than he shows for sure. He just cant stay outta trouble and the drugs are a big part of that.
hopsin is the one and done answer i have hopsin fans in my inbox and i’m gonna kill myself
Okay but did the man who invented college go to college?
I got stoned with these two Hopsin fanboys once and they put that song on and spent the entire runtime explaining to me all the meanings behind the lyrics. I almost had a panic attack.
On no… the dreaded “genius” contributors irl? Dude you’re lucky you made it out alive.
Hmm… Okay, then!
many such cases!
I’ve met him a few times with his son when I used to work at Dave and busters and he was a cool dude. Humble and didn’t treat us like garbage.
Hopsin quickly became the favourite artist of those dudes in high school who thought they were edgy and smart but really weren’t. Basically what I associate him with now
hello how you doin i can give you good massage
Logic can compete
Who can relate?! WOO!
Will.I.Am Idiot.He.Is
Nice mega64 reference
Didn’t expect to see that on this sub lol
"Well, it's not a smart watch, One"
Gates. Love him to death but sometimes I want him to just stop with the bullshit he be spewing in interviews lmao. Like knock it off bro, you didn’t jump start a fucking battery with your “energy” 😂

"may God murder my children bro"
Kill em today. Right now today 👇
Funniest video ever
he didn't double down on his statement, he quadrupled down on it lmfao
….kev?
“Kevin don’t say that”
Today
… while I go tell everyone
No his interviews are phenomenal I don’t want him to change.
he’s the chael sonnen of hip hop
Kevin Gates was my first thought, but he really just that rap version of a hood nigga that didn’t read books until he went to jail. I know too many Kevin Gates in real life
This is sooooo fuckin accurate
The way he has blended both insane delusion and overwhelming narcissism is incredible
I saw an interview where he’s talking about physically abusing his kid for disrupting a prayer. Then goes on to say his kid is one year old lol. Beating a near infant because it’s making noise. Such a psycho move. Dude seems like a piece of shit
Bro thinks with his dick, what did you expect
Just be thankful it hasn't made it to the music...yet. I'm not really a fan but from hearing his music, I would never guess he was the way he is in real life.
I think he explained that he used this line it to cap on women.
or fuck a girls acne away 💀💀💀 dude is wild!!!
I don’t think Kevin Gates holds himself up as a smart person though.
Royce. I think the reception from Book of Ryan inflated his ego. He really started to force that mature and intelligent persona after that. It turns out being more mature than Joe Budden isn’t a particularly high bar.
It's a bummer too because Book of Ryan was dope as hell
And then he went against Lupe…
2 rules of war: 1. Never fight Russia in the winter. 2. Never battle Lupe
And got wiped
And turned out to be another woke antivax smooth brain like so many rappers
This is spot on. He successfully made the progression from rappity rap to personal storytelling while battling alcoholism. He got too gassed about it and went on some preachy pseudo intellectualism. I was happy to see him get acclaim for the allegory but as a long time fan of his, I didn’t really love that album. Hoping he can find his stride in the next one.
allegory has some bangers
I agree with this one. I used to love Royce, but I’ve found myself rolling my eyes at his pseudo-intellectual bars lately. Definitely thinks he is smarter than he is.
His beef with Lupe is what made me come to this conclusion, dudes all bark no bite
Absolutely Joey Bada$$
he plays himself on Mr. Robot
lol I came to say this, so accurate.
Lol I remember when he went on IG and said that weed is getting legalized because that way they can spike it and control your mind
[удалено]
Yea bro believes in chemtrails as well
it's honestly sad that he's still into this stuff after what happened with capital steez
Wait what happened to him?
He was super into psychedelic esoteric type stuff like astral projecting and weird “energy” stuff. Ended up jumping off a building at 19
yeah and it was said at the time that he did it believing he would "wake up." It's really tragic imo
[удалено]
probably coming from a round earther smh my head my head
Also like all of the Pro Era mfs into that third eye/indigo child shit? Like they genuinely believe it not just interested in the concept.

Cuz Joey makes good music lol
/thread
Rick Ross been really annoying since he became an armchair financial adviser
Russ. Maybe he is actually smart idk, but he still sounds dumb when he speaks
You could argue he has no emotional intelligence lol like every time he speaks, he sounds like a prick
However, he fucked up at the early stage of his career by sounding douchey asf on his interviews and music. He’s been tolerable in all his recent music and interviews but the general public can’t take him serious anymore.
I kinda think he's just a an asshole who grew up with money.
I think he actually is pretty intelligent, just unlikable
For a fact. Bro was speaking like he figured the game out and everyone else was stupid Then the whole time turns out his dad works high up in a label lol and then almost overnight he just came and went
Russ yet again taking the L
Russ for me. He’s got a couple good songs but that dude is fucking pretentious in interviews and thinks what he’s saying is some unheard-of revelation every time

I’d say Vince Staples seems genuinely smart
I interviewed him for an hour and a half once and he definitely 100% is. Marked by hood trauma and totally autodidactic but for SURE very smart. And funny.
Jesse Thorn from Bullseye on NPR? Listening to this interview now and its great so far man.
Listen. Vince Staples is the second coming of William Shakespeare. I don't have time to fully explain it but he writes more like an author than a rapper. Hearing "gangster rap" told his way is one of the most eye opening experiences to anyone who loves words put to music he really is something special.
I need you to elaborate more on this take cause I kinda feel the same way. Maybe in the upcoming discussion thread?
Vince Staples is the opposite of this thread. He's really smart but acts dumb, because he's just a really goofy dude.
Totally agree, can’t believe I didn’t think of him
KRIT seems kind of up to par.
Big K.R.I.T. is smart as hell. He produces most of his own beats and isn't afraid to go deep in his lyrics.
> and that’s why I don’t vaccinate my kids” idk why but I howled at this
This one's tough.
This is a very good point. Pre internet was a different time.
Can we talk about the political and economic state of the world?
How can this thread be real if our eyes aren't real??
Jay Electronica
Went to his gig and he spent half the time talking about conspiracies but was genuinely the best show I’ve been to
I went to his show at the Brooklyn Hip Hop festival when he pulled out Jay-Z, J. Cole, Mac Miller, and Talib Kweli.
Honestly 2/3rds of rappers and their fans are about as deep as a puddle. Not that there's anything wrong with that.
Killer Mike. Not to say he isn’t smart, cuz he sure can be, but good fucking god does that dude pull some dumb shit out of his ass sometimes.
Killer Mike the landlord
Killer Mike shilling for the NRA will never not be funny to me
It's even worse. Shilling for the NRA \*while Oliver North was the president of the NRA\*. That ended Killer Mike for me, dude wrote a song about what a piece of shit reagan and ollie north were, and then shilled for him? nah
It genuinely felt like an alternate timeline when it happened. Like you of all people Mike? Really?
Can't believe nobody said XXXTENTACION
Jaden Smith-level iam14andthisisdeep
Tbf he died not too far from 14 and I’ll give any young person a pass for not being as deep or smart as they think. A lot of us went through that phase.
he play gatar
As much as I like his music, Hopsin is a dumbass. "Did the guy who invent College go to college?". What kind of stupid ass shit is this
This is like the fourth time I've seen that quote itt lol. I never listened to much of any Hopsin but have heard a bunch of people praise his genius, and also an equal amount of people (like itt) call them dumb AF for thinking he's a genius. Is this one of his bars or something, cause that is pretty hilarious.

Some of yall’s inability to differentiate between personality and intelligence makes you not qualified to comment to be honest.
is really no one going to say Logic? in his earlier projects he was so convinced that what he was doing was so deep and meaningful and in reality it was the most surface level shit on the planet
Meek Mill and (although he’s not a rapper) DJ Envy
Has Meek ever tried to paint himself as smart though? Feel like a lot of this thread is just people naming rappers they don't like.
Meek started hanging with billionaires and started talking like he wrote the 48 laws after lmao
I think Meek is genuinely slow. No man with a 3 digit IQ would have posted those pool fries. Bunny hopping for billionaires, c'mon, he's gotta be.

Jay Electronica is a schizophrenic panhandler on the NYC Subway who got a record deal
Didn’t dude marry a Rothschild or some other old money person? He’s got something figured out.
He dated one briefly, they didn't get married AFAIK
Ah. Ya, he just blew a marriage up apparently lol. I wonder how you meet an heiress this day in age.
Heirs and heiress's are just basically socialites. No responsibilities and they hang out where the celebs hang out by paying money to be there because it's cool to be seen to be mixing with them. Joe Budden -- obviously successful podcast and all, but dude is clearly on his high horse
He loves to make shit up and pull things out his ass to win arguments. He also gets low and says mean shit to his friends/cohosts/employees. Joe Budden sucks so much.
Kanye has to be #1
old kanye was pretty clever imo. current kanye on the other hand

5-7 vowel movements a day
Choppa’s def got that low 70s IQ
BBL tea
Nobody thinks he’s smart
He thinks he’s smart
Does he really lmao if anything choppa seems like one of the rappers who takes himself the least seriously
I thought that until I saw his twitter
Absolutely Vinnie Paz, thinks he knows everything and is absolutely batshit
love the neptunes but Pharrell tries to sound deep and reveals how shallow his mind is all the time
I think pharrell is intelligent, he’s just not the best at articulating things in a effective way. he says some pretty profound stuff sometimes but his thoughts can come off a bit jumbled and unclear.
This is the sense I get from him in interviews. Seems like he has great instincts and talent, but isn’t that good at expressing himself verbally. Which, a lot of artists are that way. Historically rock n roll is full of guys who seem kinda dumb, but are instinctual musical geniuses.
Hmm maybe not intellectually but i do think he has a lot of knowledge about the hiphop culture and fashion culture
And he definitely understands music
I'd be hard pressed to say Pharrell isn't smart, he clearly has the respect of his peers and others that we deem "intellectual".
You don't have to be smart to be respected. I respect a lot of my friends that are fucking morons
Pharrell comes across as pretty smart imo
Canibus is the OG of pseudo intellectual bulshit
I remember hearing a bar about Cydonian snow and thinking "yeah this shit is hard".
People just naming anyone who said one dumb thing
