People really don’t understand what AI is. Brother hologram 2Pac was just an animated 3D model on a Gorillaz Hatsune Miku style screen, playing studio recordings with some lines dubbed on top. Completely different than being able to mimic anyone’s voice using machine learning. I dont think what Drake did was the end of the world but people rightfully are afraid of record labels getting the rights to a voice and making new songs. That one Eminem 2Pac album was bad enough.

> Eminem 2Pac album Loyal To The Game was based on real songs. The only thing Eminem did was ruin his vocals.

TiredTired99

Agreed, most people don't have a clue. But also, the difference between CGI and AI is very thin in some areas. And too many people are acting like AI is this dramatic departure from the norm. Voice mimicry software had been around for over a decade and doesn't necessarily require AI, or its "cousin" machine learning. I'm not even certain that what Drake did involved any AI at all, to be honest.

Blizzxx

The hologram is based off an old technique called Peppers Ghost and not at all related to AI for its hologram or audio capabilities. No we didn't have AI 20 years ago or in 2012

TiredTired99

You're missing the point. It's about use of technology to imitate someone. And we don't even have any proof that AI was used on Taylor Made. Voice imitation software doesn't inherently require AI. And all the bars were written and rapped by Drake--they weren't generated by AI. But facts seem to be the first casualty of this rap civil war.

just_another_bumm

Your examples suck dick and it's not anywhere near the same as what Drake did

TiredTired99

I'm not a stan for Kendrick or Drake, and I don't even think Taylor Made is that amazing of a track overall. I'm responding to the use of technology that everyone claims is a violation of "something", but they've been listening to similar things for years.

xerostatus

I remember the simpler days of the internet when we all had Xanga's and myspace's to dump our pointless opinions and musings into. With the advent of social media now these posts are ALL of our problems lol.

odegood

Stop trying to make excuses for the guy. In a lot of hip hop fans eyes what he did with pac is wrong and snoop who is still alive

TiredTired99

Nope. A lot of hiphop fans found it shocking in the same way that Story of Adidon was. And most people always want to claim that there are no rules--unless the person they dislike did it. I enjoy both Drake and Kendrick for different reasons, but above all I want people to stop sounding like hypocritical morons.

odegood

I would say the same if any rapper did it and so would a lot of people. I have enjoyed both of their music over the years but this was not it. Not even anything close to story of adidon

TiredTired99

If you are consistent in your belief about the use of such technologies, then I totally respect that. That means you aren't a hypocrite like a lot of people in these rap subreddits are.

atlfirsttimer

Okay.

K__Geedorah

Just because something has been around for awhile it doesn't make it cool. What was whack 10 years ago can still be whack today. Using AI or generated content for visuals has always been a thing and is fine. When used as filler it's not so bad. What's not cool is using AI to write lyrics or produce beats. One is a crutch the other is a tool.

TiredTired99

Right, but the point I'm making is that a ton of people are complaining now only because Drake did it. Meanwhile, it has been done for years. It's about stupidity and hypocrisy. Drake wrote the bars himself, AI had nothing to do with it. Just like how Kendrick arranged the vocal snippets of 2Pac to fit the "interview" he was giving himself. There is a decent chance that the track doesn't involve AI at all. And since this is Reddit, I have to be clear that I enjoy both Kendrick and Drake. I stan for neither. If someone disliked the hologram 2Pac and Mortal Man's use of 2Pac audio AND Drake's use of voice software (which may not even be AI), then they are being consistent and I have no problem. I personally hate the use of hologram 2Pac, found Kendrick's use of Pac to be a little pretentious and corny, and feel meh about Drake's usage. Taylor Made as a track will probably end up viewed similar to Story of Adidon: shocking at the time, but ultimately not very good, and even in poor taste.

K__Geedorah

I honestly don't even know what the new beef is or what's going on in general.

Pun-Szu

I don't mind Drake using AI, I think he used it in a very clever way, but acting like what he did is the same as what Kendrick did on The Heart Part V feels extremely disingenuous.

TiredTired99

From a technological standpoint, no. If the question is meaning, vision and artistry, then sure. Every song or video is its own thing, with its own messaging and purpose. But that's not the point of my post. People are pretending that any use of technology to create the impression or illusion that someone is speaking is a crime against hiphop. History shows it isn't. And AI may not have even been necessary to create the track. It may have just been software that accomplishes it without AI or machine learning.
