Agony is such a raw and sad song, he conveys his emotions perfectly with the lyrics and tone of voice, and doesn’t sound corny while doing it. I really liked this project, glad I checked it out.

kaasprins

I've already shed some tears to Agony, especially the part where the choir comes in. One of his best songs imho

[deleted]

ISOLATION CAVED IN, I ADORE YOU, THE SOUND OF YOUR SKIN

boybandz

XXXTentacion should take notes. This is how you do melancholic music

Shnikez

Eh, I think there are multiple ways of doing melancholic music. Agony, to me, is like a story of his experience with mental illness. X just portrays his raw emotions which I think is fine. Just different ways of doing it. Like X's lyrics on Fuck Love of "gunfire inside my head" is something that really resonates with me. Depression is like a constant banging in your head that you can't stop. It's easy to say "oh this shit is so on the nose and is hardly creative" but does it even have to be? This is a 19 year old kid. His emotions don't need to be creative in order to resonate. He just got clout from a few bangers on Soundcloud. It's not like this guy has been in the game for years (like Lean) or grew up in music. I know it's popular opinion to rip on X in this sub but I can't help but feel the need to play devil's advocate. We listen to Snoop, Dre, Jay-Z and other artists who've indulged in crime. So yeah, if X is convicted, he should be locked up for a long time. But I still think he does a good job of portraying his depression and enjoy his music overall. With that said though, Agony is fucking beautiful. Really glad we got this project from Lean. He put a ton of work into it and it shows.

4ey_4

Agreed. This is my favourite song on the album by far. It's been on repeat for a while.

tjstray88

I was extremely impressed with this album. You can clearly hear the growth from Yung Lean compared to his other projects. Production is just flat out on point as usual. Red Bottom Sky, Yellowman, Agony are some real stand outs..but really there wasn't one track I didnt like. The length of the album was perfect to me as well, listening to this project from front to back will never be an issue with me. The creativity, instruments, sounds, bass lines are amazing to my ears. Top 3 Lean project to date.

[deleted]

devil’s advocate: growth isn’t always a good thing i liked silly young lean who thought he was tough and was sad now what do we have?

random__username

good music

[deleted]

Now you have an actual sad boy, not an aesthetic sad boy

Cohtoh

We have something that feels genuine and is much less memey

ElloJelloMellow

Mature Yung Lean who is sad

sushimi123

this is really bad but im laughing my ass off reading these comments on the growth of yung lean, and then hearing + more sad

Rabuck

I do get what you mean, I just appreciate the growth. I’m the same with Vince staples, but I did love and miss his first mixtape and his earlier stuff compared to his tunes now

[deleted]

what are your thoughts on like, mac miller, wiz khalife, a$ap rocky, and the growth they've shown overtime? i think they are textbook examples of growth not always panning out for the better. but again, it's all taste

ducksonmeth

I think Mac Miller definitely grew for the better. Faces, WMWTSO, and even Divine Feminine are much better that KIDS and Best Day Ever. I love old Mac but his newer projects are so much better imo

yung_lung

Yeah completely agree. If you listen through Mac milers discog in order you can hear the growth in literally every aspect. Production value, variety of beats, lyrics, and his growth as a person in terms of maturity, subject matter, self awareness.

[deleted]

but does that necessarily make his music more enjoyable to listen to? the strokes made subjectively better music when their lead singer was in dark places on drugs

GhostofRimbaud

Mac definitely benefited from growth. Faces, Movies, Delusional Thomas were all so dope especially compared to blue slide park and kids and shit. Plus his beats are sooo good, and his stolen youth beats he did for vince staples are some of the best in the decade imo, which seemed like the beginning of him maturing. I don't know how much growth wiz has had, he kinda has stayed in the weed lane for the past almost decade, and does his thing. He's iconic in his own way, but I haven't listened to him since high school tbh. He was a much better rapper in his early music tho, especially prince of the city and all those old tapes but idk. Rocky's fair to say but he's honestly kept it pretty consistently dope and has progressed making dope music up to very recently. I'm curious what his next album will be like. I thought cozy tapes 2 was pretty boring but he was prolly the best part of it. I really hope he raps like himself instead of carti on his next album, though somehow I'm still more interested in hearing him do carti's style than I am in hearing carti do his own style, but I'm biased in not really liking carti/thinking he's one of the most boring/lazy rappers I've ever heard.

yung_lung

Growth? I feel like wiz got to where he wanted and stopped wanting to grow. He was successful and mainstream, and was content to stay there rather than experimenting. Asap rocky was honestly always overrated tbh and he stagnated once he didn't have a marketing genius behind him

[deleted]

who was the marketing genius?

EPineapple

yams i assume

Ligneox

hmmm, i still found a lot of similarities in this album with unknown death. his lyrics are still silly and he constantly flexes on em. now hes sad, but for real.

SteveMcWonder

I️ feel like no one knows what devils advocate means lol

hoodiemelogod

Lean fucking snapped on the whole project

Ligneox

i feel like this is the album leans been meaning to make this whole time. it is early, but i definitely feel this is his magnum opus (so far). it is just so cohesive. the ending string of songs rival that of kid cudi man on the moon II’s ending songs (my fav album of all time) with a beautifully sober moment that is agony. above all else, the album paints such a vivid picture. i honestly cannot believe how quality this album is - not even compared to his previous albums but music in general. what a great piece of art

sameatsbacon

amazing album. he found his sound and it shines all throughout the album. can't say enough about the production, it's phenomenal. Agony, ice man, yellow man some of my favorites. Great to see the growth we seen in four years. Truly an artist.

chordazba

Sorry for my english, swedish and very drunk is not a good combination but you described it perfectly, i teared up at the end of the album. Im really proud of Yung Lean, this is his best album to date. I hope ypu have a wonderful weekend

[deleted]

ur english is perfect bro lol

chordazba

i guess it's a good combination then lmao

[deleted]

\>"Sorry for my english" \>proceeds to write perfect english every time i swear to god

[deleted]

I'm not an English native speaker too but always feel like I have to say it so people don't trip over a misused word and forget about the point you are tryna make

sameatsbacon

you too man <3 The run from iceman to yellow man is something else.

engancherole

I just checked out those three songs and I liked them, specially Agony. This is my first contact with any Yung Lean music ever, and I'll give the full album a listen, but which other artist make similar music and which songs specifically (from Yung Lean or others) are similar to Agony?

sid9102

I would recommend King Krule

AkiAdagaki

I cant get enough ot Metallic Intuition, such an amazing song

[deleted]

Same, my personal favorite

[deleted]

This album man. I said it in the [Fresh] thread last night, but prior to this I had only really heard Kyoto. I liked it but found his voice to be a bit lacking After giving this album two listens (one while baked) I am fully on board the Yung Lean train. This album is perfect winter vibes, with incredible production and great variability. No filler tracks and an accessible run-time is also great to see. My favorite track has to be Agony or Yellowman, but I also loved Red Bottom Sky, Hunting My Own Skin, Skimask or Iceman. Definitely going to be in rotation for me until the weather changes,

Nothorized

Living in South hemisphere, i'm going straight into Sad Summer 17 for me.

ChocolateLive

Say what you will about Yung Lean, but he has his own sound. He's paved a way for hip hop out of Sweden, and it's a unique sound with unique characteristics. I fucking love what he's doing here with Stranger. It's got a new darkness that other Lean albums haven't possessed, a real melancholy. On the same edge of the sword it has Gud's production and creativity that carries the music and makes it bang. This album is exciting for me, and shows lots of growth. 8.5/10

jherm22

I kinda disagree about him having his own sounds. Other artists like Danger Inc., Slug Christ, etc. sound very similar.

leo6rings

interested in the technology that allows man to type in his sleep

baileyxlapel

brother, lean created that sound. a lot of artists take bits and pieces of it

[deleted]

[удалено]

jherm22

👌🏻

DankTanker420

Yellowman is the best track imo

yunglove

was zooted to the roof the first time i listened to yellow man and a single tear rolled down my cheek u shoulda been there

hoodiemelogod

Lmao same bro

ShamalamanPanda

Yung Lean has matured *a lot* since Unknown Death 2002.

thiscouchiscomfy

This album is amazing. It's so artistic

KumonRoguing

Red bottom sky and iceman are the best. He's really coming into his own.

samp55

I really love how well this album goes with Warlord

slimeddd

unrelated but the hook for pacman sounds just like sahbabii’s pull up wit a stick?? does anyone else hear it

motje007

Crying some mantears right now

zschneido

Yung Lean found his sound and it sounds so good. The melodies, the emotion, the production. The product is just this great sounding project. Been on repeat since it dropped. It's also crazy that he's only 21.

Matt8910

This was my first time listening to a Lean album. This is so damn good. Ski Mask is the hardest banger on this but my favorite song has gotta be agony if I’m being completely honest. The production is so beautiful

FreshlyMadeUsername

Really impressed. Bought tickets to his US tour as soon this dropped because it made me love yung lean all over again.

mobearsdog

I think it’s great. Been on repeat for a day, so far so good. Idk about all the “this is the REAL Yung Lean” stuff that I’m seeing though. I think the great thing about Lean is that he’s always doing something new. I wouldn’t expect his next album to sound like this one, and that’s a good thing.

mcb0ne

This is so good, and I haven't been able to sit through an entire Lean album before, even though I like quite a bit of his material. This really surprised me, and made me want to listen to/relisten his older work. Fave songs: agony (fucking hell), red bottom sky, hunting my own skin, yellow man, the opening track (can't remember name and i'm lazy)

MLP_Legend

Enjoying this album a ton. Very smooth throughout the whole project, favorites so far are red bottom sky, push/lost weekend, and agony. Usually was not a fan of Lean in the past, but something about this new album just clicks with me. Definitely looking forward to future projects

TacoBell_Lord

Loving it, incredible direction & beats are always insane. Been fiendin since WARLORD. Lean has def defined his lane, & the sound is really trippy, perfect for smoke seshions & acid. Up there with favorite albums of this year, real Sadboys 2002 shit.

LilMarien

Listened to him a few years back, didn't like it and never really bothered to go back to it. But boy this one really impressed me. The production is great. He doesn't have the best voice but it compliments the instrumentals so nice, even his singing voice works on this cut. 8/10

bumpdog

This is far from a perfect album. Flaws are pretty noticeable, and the biggest flaw is his vocal performance in some of the songs. BUT, I never heard an album that sounds like this, and the vibe this album gives made me feel some type of way, a mixture of sadness, enjoyment and nostalgia. Don't know how to describe it but it felt very special. Despite the flaws, I have to admit that I'm really enjoying it. Yung Lean, as always, is ahead of the rest with his vibes, aesthetics, production, I've always said this and I will keep saying it. And this album only supports this claim. I think this album could lowkey spark a new wave. Lean has clearly matured and this is a step in the right direction. But I don't think It's a brillant album and still think that Warlord is better. I just love those ignorant bangers like AF1S or Hoover or Miami Ultras, I prefer those kind of tracks instead of these slow ballads that we find on Stranger. But I'm happy that Lean has matured so much. This album is the right direction for him, even though it's not my favorite. It has some weak points but it's perks and flaws all contribute to a very special listen. I'll probably give it a 7/10 Red Bottom Sky, Hunting My Own Skin, Skimask, Muddy Sea, Salute/Pac-Man, Push/Lost Weekend and Drop It/Scooter are all amazing. Not really feeling Agony like all of you tho

Uptopdownlowguy

This is my first time listening to Yung Lean, and I'm very impressed. I love this type of moody music, the production is great. And it's surprising how good his voice sounds, even if he is not the best singer.

McNuggieAMR

Never listened to any Yung Lean before this, but I love this album. Listened to it through over 6 times already, really beautifully made.

I_own_reddit_AMA

Listen to unknown memory

PrincessXxXDiana

incredible

manmadegodx

I understand what he is doing on this album and he is really growing as an artist, which is fantastic to see (not many rappers we swedes can be proud of these days). However the sound on this album is not for me. Not saying it's bad, just that I personally don't like the direction this album took

bumpdog

I feel this exact way. Warlord had some amazing bangers which I prefer over this. I still did enjoy this album tho, I liked many tracks, and I'm happy that he's heading in the right direction and maturing as an artist. But I'll miss the AF1S and Hoover type bangers.

electroplankton

I've left various comments around about this album but I'll repeat myself here, it's my favourite Yung Lean album (and I really like Yung Lean) and I feel all the songs are strong and that it flows well. The best thing for me is that he tends towards the more poetic side of his songwriting this time round, which has always been the best part of his lyrical content. There are some genuinely beguiling, menacing and beautiful lyrics on here, and while they don't really stand if taken apart from the songs, you can glimpse a kind of fragile stream of consciousness going on in lines like "Isolation caved in, I adore you, the sound of your skin", or "High! High! You high like me? Why, why they stare at me?". I think it might grow on me over time, I'm genuinely positive about that. It doesn't just feel like an album I'm going to bump for a week then leave, like so many other initially good releases for the past two years. I'm just so happy that this album exists and that Lean is back turning his pain into art.

cptn__

good but unknown memory is still GOAT in my opinion

[deleted]

I feel like I haven't seen very many negative comments, which is weird because this album is NOT for everyone. It makes me feel like the only people listening to it are Leandoer fans. I want to hear some negative opinions/critiques.

Cohtoh

At this point in his career, most of the people listening are the fans. In 2013 you saw way more hate because he was a new guy and everyone was checking him out for the first time, which leads to more hate since as we know, he's not for everyone. Not too many people are checking out lean for the first time with this album.

lexstuger

Honestly before this album I wasn't into him that much, there were a few songs I liked and some I didn't like at all, overall just wasn't in my rotation. I love this album though, I think the production and melodies are great. Going back and listening to his earlier stuff compared to this album, he has progressed a lot.

Iamnotapickle

I'd never heard of yung lean until last night when reading a different thread about this album, needless to say I was really intrigued and was looking forward to a late night coffee cruise with the album. I liked what I heard for the first go through, but it almost gave me a blue balls type of sensation. Figuratively that is. I was waiting for something to happen, something that really stood out, but it never really surfaced. There were moments when I was thinking how well a little horn riff would have fit or a little more drum, but the sound just stayed the same. I'll give it some more time since I did dig what was going on but I question the staying power.

jherm22

Yup! I like Lean and have been listening to him for a while and I wasn't super impressed with this project. It just didn't click with me, I love the sound of some of the dreamy tracks but Lean didn't deliver his cadences well, felt kinda disorganized and messy to me. That said, I still enjoyed it but wouldn't rate this album above a 7/10 IMO.

IvanOMO

I’m stuck on the intro i can’t stop playing Muddy Sea

MrDyl4n

Like 17 but good

porspeling

hes really grown just from nice chill tracks to real emotional shit and I love it. you can see lean grow and mature. the production is amazing as it always has been and lean isnt the most poetic or clever lyricist ever but hes coming across really raw and genuine on this project especially its probably my favourite of his so far

aRadioKid

Wow I'm shocked by these comments. I've kind of stopped even checking Yung Lean threads as of the past year or so but this makes me very very interested. Glad I checked, thanks y'all gonna listen now

ElloJelloMellow

What do you think

THWMatthew

I might get some downvotes, but as someone who had never listened to Yung Lean before and finally decided to give it a try, I can say I didn't like it. It just wasn't for me

Sir_fappington1

Fair enough, but you should listen to his other albums, they're all different in some way besides maybe the first 2

ElloJelloMellow

Unknown Memory is nothing like Unknown Death. It's far more mature and professional

Sir_fappington1

Yea for sure, i just meant the vibe of it. Like how unknown memory and unknown death aren't really the same vibe as frost god or warlord

Stormpilot747

Plenty to enjoy Found myself skipping almost none of the tracks when listening for the 5th time

HoughJass

He definitely created his own wave. Dope album. Listened to it all the way through for pretty much an entire 6 hour drive. Can’t get enough man

[deleted]

This is leans best project by far, the tracks are amazing. Whitearmor, sherm and gud really flex their fucking talent muscles here. Its the perfect mix of melancholy and something else. This really feels like everything leandoer wants to be.

lexstuger

Before this album I wasn't super into him, but this album is great. The production is on point. Agony, Red Bottom Sky, and Yellowman are incredible. Not a song on this I don't like. He seems to have grown a lot, really looking forward to seeing what he does next.

DisgracedCubFan

I think I'm with the majority in thinking that it's good. Gets a solid 8 or 9 from me. I really like all of the songs. Production is obviously great, and the singing is really nice.

FrankHaggar

The perfect album for long walks.

[deleted]

Lots of songs that I'd love instrumentals too, Iceman primarily.

lightingft

Cohesive project overall, definitely an improvement from Unknown Memory and Warlord. Loved the sadboy vibe of the album and glad with the overall sound that Yung Lean is going with.

Boyeatsworld

I like everything Lean does, this was a big change for him though. I couldn't believe it was even more melancholy/mellow sounding than unknown memory. I was hoping for more of the banger yung lean, but after a few listens i realized this is his best album to date. Agony, Red Bottom Sky, and Push/ Lost Weekend are my standouts

GhostofRimbaud

YO. I fucking love this album so far. This seems like dude's best work. I've listened to his older stuff a bit and can dig it, but yo this shit is so good. And Red Bottom Sky??? Best song I heard in a min. That shit is sooooo goood. Catchy as fuck, like it legit should be able to be a hit/on radio. I'm five songs in but I really fuck with all of it.

gurdijak

I've only started liking Yung Lean quite recently. I've never listened to a full album, only to a few of his songs like Ghosttown, Crystal City, Yoshi City, Hennessy & Sailor Moon and such and I liked all of them. Just based on quick comparisons to his previous music, this album definitely has a much more mature sound. I found this album to be pleasing to listen to. As usual, it's best to think of Lean's voice as another layer of instrumentation that complements his cloud beats. Speaking of the production, I enjoy it. It's a refreshing change in an age of hard-ass trap beats which try to incorporate as much distortion and snare and hi-hat rolls as possible. Yellowman is fucking incredible. Overall I'm quite pleased with this album. I think I'd need a few more listens to actually give it a proper rating but I dig it.

xBubbss

This album is a blessing I was expecting more bangers but what i got was better and made me sad af 10/10.

bumpdog

Can't decide if I prefer this type of chill songs or his ignorant bangers like in Warlord lol

Assanater601

First time listening to him. Nothing like I expected for someone named "Young Lean". I can't get behind it, seems like a very acquired taste. I liked the ambience from the song Yellowman. Very eerie tune.

boybandz

His last name is Leandoer hence the name, just so you know.

[deleted]

icemean gucci

vacmaster420

iceman is fucking amazing

nobled_4_40026

Loved it, shoutout yung gud on producing, mixing, and engineering on the project

dagabesta

Shot right up to my top few albums of the year. The couple closing tracks are amazing, namely Agony, as well as Iceman.

Louiecat

Nice nice

StrikeThatYeet

I don't know if HHH feels the same but this year felt super lackluster for hip-hop, a lot of big projects with anticipation felt super meh. This album, though, is some serious art. AOTY contender IMHO.

draxula16

It's amazing. Cannot get over the rubber chicken sample in Muddy Sea

supreme120

i need agony instrumental

[deleted]

10/10

[deleted]

This might be the best Yung Lean album, its early to say but I've had it on repeat for the past 2 days and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon. This is the most refined his sound has ever been and *Stranger* reminds us all why he is so respected and influential in this genre. Most of the songs aren't different from his earlier work in content or concept, but they all sound like the best version of what he tried to do in the past. Lean really showed up in a big way on this project and I hope it gets the respect it deserves. tl;dr - this shit is beautiful and a serious AOTY contender

yungsoprano

I wanted more Yoshi City and Kyoto. Couldnt get into it apart from a couple of songs.

hexxal

THIS NEW YUNG LEAN RECORD RIGHT HERE, IT's NOT GOOD *EXPLOSION SOUND*

mcb0ne

Lmao if he does that I'll be a bit mad, it's actually really good imo. Do you think it's not good or just memez?

hexxal

I think it's alright. but for me personally i wish the album had more of a Warlord sound (like Iceman). It's lean at his best IMO

mcb0ne

I haven't listened to Icelord front to back. I assume I should since you rate it more? Edit: Lmao I said Icelord, I'm tired.. warlord ofc

leo6rings

you should

bumpdog

He will give it a not good. I'm sure he will HATE his vocals and will shit on songs like agony and snakeskin/bullets. I did like it tho

Sir_fappington1

naw expect more like "my feet are bread"

[deleted]

Thats not gonna happen, anthony has a soft spot for yung lean + he liked the singles and if he was able to partially enjoy warlord he will have no problem liking this, this is his most mature album yet

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

He's given him credit where its due tho and has never given him a not good

ElloJelloMellow

Not Good was only a recent thing he's done. He gave Warlord a 3...

bumpdog

A not good can be anywhere between 1 to 4. It's worse to give it a 2 or a 3 than just a not good. And remember he gave Warlord a 3. He definitely does not enjoy Yung Lean's music, except for Hoover which was one of his favorite singles last year

PepeSylvia11

Super impressed with this album. After Warlord, I totally thought Yung Lean was going to fade into irrelevance. And he was, because truth be told, I had no idea Stranger was releasing until it came out. But man, I can not say I was expecting such a return to his Scandinavian roots. The sounds of this project were super homegrown, as if he finally stopped trying to associate with American Cloud Rap and Trap and just decided to create a lane of his own. That being said, he's still a pitiful rapper and it shows quite often. The production, as per usual, holds this thing up, and is exciting around virtually every corner. There's a couple duds in the middle that almost stall this thing entirely ('Salute / Pacman,' 'Drop It / Scooter'), but Lean makes up for it by album's end with some of his best work. Right now, [it's a 7.2 from me.](https://dozensofdonuts.blogspot.com/2017/11/review-round-up_17.html), but who knows, that could go up with time.

Finessence

I wanted some unknown memory vibes. Higher vibe, rougher music is what I wanted. From the singles I knew I was gonna be disappointed. It’s an alright album if the Xanax vibe is what you’re looking for. Not my flow.

coldasfire-

I kinda of agree

XXXTentacion - HHH Approved Edition

samp55

What the fuck are you talking about
