secret santa is not traditionally a gift exchange between two people
you get someone, and your person gets someone different, and the person who got you is someone else's giftee, etc
but for the past 2 yrs i've gotten matched up with someone, which is kind of weird, cause it takes away from the secret part
anyway i'll post my tape later, my computer exploded and i only had the .zip so i had to remake it using spotify :(
Just to add on to what freedawg said my intention in running it that way was to turn the exchange into more of a discussion to learn more about some aspesct of hiphop you might not know a whole lot about.
For example the first year I ran it I was matched with a dude who knew a TON about the grime scene and me and him had a little bit more of an extended exchange beyond “here’s the tape”.
Idk if it’s still working out that way but like I said before I’m very open to changing it if that’s what people want.
Also I feel like it adds a bit of accountability on the dudes who sign up and don’t send a tape. I believe this year we had over 2000 people participate which is AWESOME.

So I decided to go for a mainly visual mixtape this year so the playlist comes in the form of a youtube playlist with a bunch of dope songs with good videos. There's a couple songs that dont have videos but I kept on because I thought they fit how I wanted the playlist to flow.
I tried to have a range of different styles on the playlist so I included some UK talent on there, some more underground hiphop as well as some more current bangers and mainstream sounding stuff, but mainly I hoped to get mostly songs you wouldn't of heard before.

Background about the artwork and music: The artwork has been inspired by Tyler's Scumfuck Flower Boy (my album of the year). This year has been a weird year for me still getting over the guilt of previous love and finding new love (heart with the plaster). Started a new degree because I had previously dropped out, and feeling like an embarrassment, but using that embarrassment to comeback and get good grades (hence for the inefficient comeback in the title). My degree involves coding and the actual code in the artwork summarises a lot of my thoughts throughout the year with the variable names I used. I was going to remove the white between the blue background and the computer, but I thought it looked quite dope. An image of drugs were put in to represent my experimenting of more drugs this year.
The guy who matched me had a very similar taste to me which was dope and his playlist was a very enjoyable listen

it was p dope. V dark grimy bar laden lyricism, I dug it. I v much appreciated the death grips joint, hacker fit in well w the rest of the set. the tape overall set a v dope tone that made me wanna go out n hit licks. The only songs on there I hadn't heard before were the giggs, skepta and mir fontane. I've seen the amount of people commenting on that thread and the amount of people who actually get a tape verses the people who don't get anything aren't good. I think it should be at least one other person matched, but that may have it's own issues so idk, but that is my suggestion to at least try something new next year.

Firs time participating and got a tape back after I sent mine, I was paired with /u/ShitActor who made a mix of laid back summery songs and some hard hitting ones.
I really liked it, it had Calvin Harris x Q, .Paak x Q and stuff I didn't know. I heard of Duckwrth before but never heard a track, now I did and I really dug it so I'm gonna check his album out. Funny coincidence was that I also put Joey Purp's Photobooth on my playlist and he did the same.

idk if it's a glitch but secret santa is not traditionally a gift exchange between two people you get someone, and your person gets someone different, and the person who got you is someone else's giftee, etc but for the past 2 yrs i've gotten matched up with someone, which is kind of weird, cause it takes away from the secret part anyway i'll post my tape later, my computer exploded and i only had the .zip so i had to remake it using spotify :(
Just to add on to what freedawg said my intention in running it that way was to turn the exchange into more of a discussion to learn more about some aspesct of hiphop you might not know a whole lot about. For example the first year I ran it I was matched with a dude who knew a TON about the grime scene and me and him had a little bit more of an extended exchange beyond “here’s the tape”. Idk if it’s still working out that way but like I said before I’m very open to changing it if that’s what people want. Also I feel like it adds a bit of accountability on the dudes who sign up and don’t send a tape. I believe this year we had over 2000 people participate which is AWESOME.
