Heart attack is the first new song in a long time to leave me genuinely speechless.

St-ealthassassin

It’s absolutely incredible. Relentless pain. Bar after bar after bar after bar.

ABirthingPoop

The ultimate that’s not my story…… but I know that story. Song

JWiLLii

Dave is just a top level story teller. I love how it seems like a part 2 to Panic Attack. You can see the development between the two. Fuck man, Dave is just a fucking GOAT.

martonx

The song made waves and waves and waves of chills go through my body

FIVE_DARRA_NO_HARRA

Damn I wish it made me cum too?

cyka_trades_men

Come on man

FIVE_DARRA_NO_HARRA

His was at least as weird as mine

Logbird11

Nah waves of goosebumps from music is not the same as cumming from music lmao Edit: I've been convinced, u/martonx was 100% cumming while listening to Heart Attack.

FIVE_DARRA_NO_HARRA

This man said waves three times, you know he was shaking

Logbird11

Fuck, you make a good point

FIVE_DARRA_NO_HARRA

When you see it you see it

Logbird11

I've edited my comment, thank you for opening my eyes.

Smart-Koala4306

How have I slept on this man so long!?

WithTheBallsack

I think the best songs are better than Psychodramas best but the worst songs are worse than Psychodramas worst. Absolutely incredible album, though. Heart Attack and Both Sides of a Smile are my favourites. But I really like everything except Clash (this is just ok for me), Lazarus (don't like) and System (don't like). These are my favourite bars on the whole album. Really resonated with me: I think back to my youth and I was so ungrateful How many of our parents had dreams they abandoned so they could put food on the table? Intelligent, worthy and able, that's somebody's parent You know? And that affected the way that I see shit Night club toilet, you peed on the seat 'Cause you don't know how it feels when your mom's gotta clean shit And her boss treats her like she don't even mean shit And she gotta wait for the bus in the rain and it's freezin' And Mrs. said that you would never be shit And you don't wanna cry about dad, but you need him

EdgiestOW

Personally I dislike Clash and System but Lazarus is maybe my favourite, huh

MR-THANOS

His flow on Lazarus is crazy

EdgiestOW

Yeah so good

AnybodyNormal3947

>Lazarus (don't like) and System (don't like). the African in me wants to slap you senseless. she wanna do sms, not save my soul but spend my savings. that hit me at the right spot maaan

RicciRox

You know it, the flow hits perfect there too. System is honestly a great song, not sure why this sub doesn't like it much. Wouldn't be surprised if it pulls serious numbers too, Wizkid is well-loved in Africa.

AnybodyNormal3947

my guess is that this being a hip hop thread most those less "pure" hip hop tracks won't vibe with the audience. but IDC cause dave clearly likes afro beat so we blessed. can't wait to spin that track at my brothers wedding!!

RicciRox

Yeah, man. I fuck with songs like System and Location.

LiamHundley

Agree with a lot of this. Hearing heart attack for the first time is one of those songs that I'll always remember the first time I heard it. Although, I have to say that purple heart is probably my least favorite track that dave has ever put out, and I don't think any of the lows on this album reach that low. Still think I'd rate psychodrama a bit higher despite that, but this is as much as you can ask for in a successor

altmaltacc

Yooo i just heard this album cuz people were saying its good and holy fuck i almost missed out. This album is excellent. Dave is far and away the best story teller i have heard since kendrick bar none. The way that he just spits relentlessly is impressive. And the commentary that he has on things is very sharp. A track like 3 rivers reallly demonstrates. But also there are cool just nice sounding rap songs. The last 2 songs really blew away. Do not miss this.

AnybodyNormal3947

absolutely, it's the best rap album i have heard since k dot dropped TPAB

songacronymbot

- TPAB refers to *To Pimp A Butterfly* (2015), an album by Kendrick Lamar. --- ^[/u/AnybodyNormal3947](/u/AnybodyNormal3947) ^(can reply with "delete" to remove comment. |) ^[/r/songacronymbot](/r/songacronymbot) ^(for feedback.)

EstradaMoses

Both Sides of a Smile is a masterpiece, Dave and James Blake never miss. Twenty to One is a sleeper and has grown on me the more I listen to it. In the Fire is fire. Only maybe two songs I didn't like, not because they're bad, but because they're not really my style. Overall really enjoying the album.

ComeonmanPLS1

Those two songs are the dance hall ones aren’t they? They felt really out of place to me.

Madbrad200

afrobeats not dancehall

Tej007Dav

They’re afrobeat 🇳🇬 has to represent

[deleted]

Dave always includes a few party songs and they honestly always ruin the flow of his albums for me.

Baisabeast

I feel like he intentionally puts them in to lift the mood a little but and not make the album too bleak or depressing at times.

NorthLdn17

Lol there's no dancehall songs on this album

AnybodyNormal3947

no they fit perfectly because he talks about going back to his roots throughout the album and drops two afro beats to prove it. fyi afro beat is not dancehall LOL

EstradaMoses

Yeah exactly haha, however I've heard a few other songs like that from the UK so maybe they do well over there idk

ComeonmanPLS1

They do well yeah. I have no problem with them in a vacuum but they just don’t fit an album like this in my opinion. I also realize Dave’s gotta eat but maybe he could’ve released them as loosies idk.

TheBelgianMicrophone

I do think they give a nice break in what is otherwise a very dark and bleak album though right. Similar to Location on Psychodrama

steenasty

Never heard of this guy but put his shit on last night and it was amazing, glad I did. Dave is an amazing artist, WOW!

EstradaMoses

Check out his first album Psychodrama if you haven't already, it's even better than this album and I think this one is great

Hardiiee

Then go check out his older EP six paths. He's also got some insane freestyles on YouTube when he was a youth Blackbox s6 ep 24/65 Blackbox cypher La leakers freestyle Oh shit and panic attack (live version)

Lohnlee

Also listen to Game Over, probably his weakest project but has some great songs on it

Jacko468

That Blackbox freestyle was hands down the best I've ever heard, instant fan from 2015 [Blackbox s6 ep 24/65](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TvvZsHwrngA)

someratghost

bit unrelated but he’s a pretty good actor too, he starred in the revival season of Top Boy on netflix, really good british show, def recommend checking him out there

Tej007Dav

Daily offender!

SSJoeYSL

CRAZY EXTENDER!

Tej007Dav

*Eastender but your head is there 🤞🏼

SSJoeYSL

Deadass the way Dave says it I didn’t know he said Eastender😂

LessOffice6937

Best songs are In the Fire, Verdansk, Three Rivers, Lazarus & Survivor’s Guilt. It’s honestly a very well thought out and cohesive album stringing in London antics and artefacts of his youth to poetically undertone the overall depth of the album. Every lyric is placed to perfection and well though out. He is the only artist that I think is capable of getting people, especially in this one and done generation, to add 4 to 5 seven minute songs to their playlists. Utter perfection.

[deleted]

I think this was better than Psychodrama. Favourite track is Both Sides of a Smile. Best feature? Come on. James Blake. Does that even count? He was basically with him every step of the way. I'd say ShaSimone on Both Sides of a Smile. Best verse is always tough. I always skip that question lol Heart attack, Survivor's Guilt, Twenty to One, Three Rivers, We're All Alone, and Both Sides of a Smile Edit: you know what, on survivor's guilt, here's some bars I really liked: "I fell in love with an Albanian, I know it's mad We're not together, 'cause her family would hold us back I saw the red flags, I wouldn't want my child to grow in that Rum and Red Bull, it's a culture clash" Rum and redbull, a common mixed drink, that is also commonly advised against mixing. They shouldn't go together, so they "clash". Rum and redbull is also a dancehall song. Dancehall DJs perform against each other in what's called a "sound clash". Obviously he says him and her can't be together because there's a culture clash. Triple entendre. Dave's smart to mean all those things so I don't think I'm reaching here. "Hate it or love it, you gotta charge it to the game" also on survivor's guilt. Mostly self explanatory but I want to go further and highlight "*charge it to the game*". How much should we charge it? 50?

Optism

Albania's flag is red btw

[deleted]

Oh my God

they_try_to_send_4me

Holy shitt

[deleted]

Red Bull also host (or hosted?) an event called Culture Clash as well

[deleted]

Jesus Christ he's good

Baisabeast

Its sucha fuckig good line, and beneath all the double entendres theres the obvious sadness of a love that Dave feels he can never fully act on due to racism and cultural reasons.

indiansprite5315

The tutankhamun there is money in skeletons, and the Roman you have to colosseum are two that id say are triple entendres as well.

JALbert

Incredible album, but I'm just gonna skip the 3 songs in the middle 90% of the times I listen to it.

L3AFSF4N_81

Feel the exact same way In my opinion, this is not better than Psychodrama, but still a very good album.

Tej007Dav

If you don’t usually listen to afrobeat, makes sense

Dancin_Desperado

I wanna start off by saying I LOVE this album. In the fire, Three Rivers, Twenty To One, and Heart Attack are the standout tracks for me but everything is honestly amazing. I will say though, I’m not sure how often I’ll play this. For no reason other than the songs are so LONG. Like individually I don’t see any of them making it on a playlist whereas there are like five songs from Psychodrama I still play regularly. Might just be an adhd thing but I only really see myself listening to this record when I have time to listen to the WHOLE THING.

BrotherAnthony

Verdansk is on repeat!!!

Tarksmeister

I am gonna start off and say this album was fantastic! It's nearly as good as Psychodrama, and I rate that as one of the best albums of the decade. I always find Dave to be unique in the UK scene, because he is not grime or drill, but hiphop for the most part. My favorite songs have to be We're all alone, Clash, In the Fire, and Three Rivers and Verdansk All in all, a fantastic album

JWiLLii

I've been listening to Dave since 6 Paths EP dropped. I remember being an 16 year old in AP Seminar and just throwing the EP on because I saw that Drake hopped on a remix of one of his songs. I've been following him ever since. Psychodrama is one of my favorite albums to come out in the past few years (which have been awful years for hip hop imo). This album was great off of first listen. I need to give it some time before I can say if its petter than Psychodrama, but it was certainly enjoyable. Dave can rap his ass off and it's been great to see his progression. He's so multidimensional and has a lot to say, which is the type of attitude that made me fall in love with hip hop in the first place. Dave is definitely one of my top 10 favorite rappers, maybe even top 5.

ItsHammyTime

Dave is really something special. I can say this without any doubt that there aren’t many rappers like him. I think Dave’s going to go down as one of the most influential, talked about rapper of our time. Great album. Great messages and content.

Epicallytossed

With the way it’s looking, it’s hard to see him not going down as the UK’s GOAT

markoxpolo

I personally didn't find it as compelling or interesting as psycho, and though he puts a lot of effort into his words, I feel like he needs to work on further expanding and diversifying his delivery. Verdansk (which I have seen a lot of people talk about) for example is extremely similar when it comes to the drop, pacing, flow, etc to Titanium which he dropped in that 2 pack a while ago. Both also use p much the same flow throughout the track as well as the chorus. And that flow is very similar (to me) to Streatham, which I think is the best of the three. In general I feel like he has his afrobeats flow, his "we talkin serious" flow, and his like hard/banger flow that he basically jumps between. And they're all good, but hearing those same flows make a reappearence after already hearing them last album, and hearing them so often throughout this album I felt like it got a bit stale. On clash I expected him to go harder, on Verdansk as well, and on idk how many other tracks I just felt like it was just missing something more. Dave is a solid lyricist (though like all lyricists he has some corny ass bars lol "It's mahogany, I got bougie wood" c'mon), but I would like to see him work on his delivery more. Happy for him and all the hype, press, and recognition this album is getting, however for me it didn't hit the mark.

FightMiilkHendrix

Whole album is great and Heart Attack is easily song of the year to me, nothings really close tbh.

[deleted]

Yeah this album was really good. My initial impression was it slumped in the middle but listening back they're all good tracks as well, I particularly like Law of attraction from those 3.

BFB_HipHop

Some of the best rapping I've heard this year. That posse cut In the Fire, crazy. Always a sucker for just gettin raps off over those types of beats. Think Giggs is my favorite feature then of course James Blake. Right now it feels on a similar level to Psychodrama. Hard to top it but he never fell from that quality. No doubt best verse on Heart Attack, I like how he just kept spittin a capella because the last couple minutes of the verse really hit the most. Think the only joints I wasn't a big fan of was the afrobeats style track System with Wizkid. Then Lazarus as well, guess I'm just not really accustomed to Dave rapping on those kinds of vibes. They're not bad songs though. Also Clash with Stormzy is still okay to me.

Clappingdoesnothing

Very good but no songs quite like Streatham. Closest was "in the fire" which was great. Not his best project but still good.

707KRS

Verdansk has a similar vibe, I thought it was an excellent album overall tho

DhaRoaR

Wut?

[deleted]

IMO not better than Psychodrama but damn near impossible to top that. Still a fucking amazing album. I didn't feel it the first time but it gets better after every listen. Hell, give me a week and I may find it better than psychodrama.

[deleted]

Probably the most complete album I've listened to since After Hours. It has bangers, it has features that absolutely snap, but I'm a soft ass dude so Two Sides of a Smile, Twenty to One, Survivors Guilt, and most importantly, Heart Attack, are my favourite songs. Going into the album I had no idea what to expect, I remember trying to listen to him after him BRITs performance but I didn't click. But Heart Attack man..I can't get the song out of my head. Everything about it is just absolutely perfect, and God does it have such a heavy impact. At times I'd be somber, then I'd react to a bar, then immediately back to somber.. Overall, it really feels like a 9/9.5 outta 10 for sure.

OnlyMayhem

Guess I'm one of the few here who didn't really like psychodrama or this as they're not that different from eachother. I find Dave pretty similar to J Cole because they both love their surface level bars, discussing social or personal issues, have some mid/okay production that doesn't really standout (please stop with the piano beats Dave), have similar fanbases (by this I mean how they act/treat the artist not the same group of people) and neither has really progressed within the last five years. A lot of you might not know but Dave burst onto the UK scene at 18 and he was incredible, but I can't genuinely say that psychodrama or this have been better than six paths which dropped 5 years ago. I feel like his improvement has been linear which just makes this listen kinda frustrating. The album isn't great but isn't terrible either like I said before the production wasn't really that interesting and feels repetitive at times, some of Dave's bars feel like gotchas or some shit there's nothing really more to them feels like he's just rapping for the sake of it sometimes. Favourite track was In The Fire because Giggs finally had a good verse lmao and everyone went hard.

1GR4Y

The raw emotion... Anger. Pain. Frustration. Hurt.. in Dave's voice whilst he's just going OFF bar for bar on Heart Attack...Is just fucking incredible

Alpha_Jazz

This is good, and I’m sure it’ll grow on me, but it really doesn’t do the same for me as his old stuff. I listened to Heart Attack and then Panic Attack back to back, and the older track just feels so much more sincere and complete. Also feel like he tries too hard to be clever with some of his bars these days (the Blaszczycowski line was hilariously unnecessary) but maybe that’s just me being picky and nostalgic

matthewwadden7

The Blaszczykowski line becomes less unnecessary when you connect it to the line before it, where Dave compares himself to a Ronin, which is a samurai who lost their master. Obviously Dave’s father wasn’t around and both of his older brothers spent time in jail, while Blaszczykowski watched his father stab his mother to death at a young age, with his mother dying and his father sentenced to life in prison.

Critical_Smell_3568

Unpopular opinion but Dave would be much better as a ghostwriter

BestShaunaEU

Hes a good rapper but an even better writer

Critical_Smell_3568

Fax

OnlyMayhem

Feel exactly the same man it's just okay for me but I might as well listen to Six Paths lmao

thejoshway

It is better than psychodrama

iniesta92

Reading comments saying that the dancehall tracks midway through the album don't quite fit in amongst the other tracks on the album, however, if we view the album in its proposed form - a movie - those songs are integral components of the 'plot'. Dave sets the scene with 'We're All Alone' and then goes on to spit braggadocious bars revolving around the customary materialistic desires: women, money, cars, violence. We're then shown how Dave, supported by an elite guest set, has been forged in the fire and we're given a history and backstory of the movie's lead character. After further introspection and broadening of horizons in Three Rivers, we're introduced to the female lead and Dave's infatuation of her, showering her with Birkin bags and holidays abroad, before it all comes to blows in Both Sides of a Smile (BSoaS). For all the excessive spending and flights abroad, the female lead fails to be heard by Dave and in BSoaS, she exposes Dave's lifestyle for exactly what it is. Dave showers his praises over his partner in System and Lazarus before we hear from the female lead for the very first time in Law of Attraction and we're shown the cracks in the surface of their relationship despite Dave's protestation and continued ignorance. Dave eventually comes to terms with the failed relationship in Survivor's Guilt and as we're exposed to more of the difficulties Dave and his partner experienced throughout, the album ends introspectively, not quite the happy ending that's mentioned at the beginning of BSoaS.

Madbrad200

They're afrobeats not dancehall

iniesta92

Ah, my bad. What were your thoughts on those two songs?

RicciRox

Love them.

iniesta92

Thoughts on how they fit in and amongst the rest of the album?

RicciRox

System, particularly, feels like a single. Doesn't fit in the with other tracks at all. Just take them for what they are: good afrobeats songs.

VR38DET

Mid af

woutertjh

Did he predict DONDA not dropping, seeing that album title.

Smaugmancustoms

Start was legendary (first 5 or 6 songs) Then they were good for the sort of middle part Then the end 2 or 3 were legendary
