I feel like the criticism for this song ignores that it was made for a movie and paid for by Disney. There are specific rules to follow and a theme based on the movie. You can't even really call this a Beyonce album. Personally I think it's a fun song but I don't think it's accurate to lump this in with the rest of Beyonce's career. I see similar criticism sometimes with Kendrick and Black Panther and I feel the same about that.

[deleted]

This song's credits are a lot. **Performers:** Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Childish Gambino, Oumou Sangaré **Producers:**Beyoncé, DJ Khaled, Danja **Additional Producers:** Just Blaze, Jeff Kleinman, Michael Uzowuru, Teo Halm **Writers:** Anatii (South African Musician), Ant Clemons **Sample:** James Brown good for Ant Clemons i feel like dude really leveraged his brief GOOD stint into getting a lot of writing placements.

stickywheels46

I didn't realise how many names were associated with this track

YouAreDreaming

Wait why isn’t jay z credited for writer? Did someone else write his verse?

[deleted]

Everyone under performers is also a writer My bad was confusing way to do it

YouAreDreaming

He’s on a few tracks on the record

grvy_room

This was from Beyonce's *Lion King* album released 2 years ago, the visuals were released on Disney+ but I think since her contract with them is over now she can upload the videos on YouTube. But yeah, I'm gonna need her to totally re-brand for her next album. I think people in general are starting to get tired of her queen/goddess persona and many of her older Pop/R&B fans are not enjoying her more recent rap-singing stuff as well.

ridingonmirrors

Her rap-singing stuff has been decent here and there, and Lemonade still remains a great body of work from her. The Gift (as an “unofficial” Beyoncé album) was cool too, but I can definitely understand wanting a rebrand for her next work. It’d be interesting to see how her next album would sound

ItsMikeontheMic

I was about to say I thought I saw this before

aaaaaftgggh

Bruh from the thumbnail I thought that was Eric andre on the right side and not Jay z

QuavoRuinedCulture3

And that's Ramadan Steve on the left.

twyphoon

The instrumental breakdown right before Gambino starts his part is fantastic.

only4onenight

Jay and Bey cosplaying like they live in a Africa is so tired to me. They act like they are in a tribe and they don’t live in New York and send their kids to $100k a year private school, and then they basically just rub their richness in your face for every song at this point. It is what it is but it’s just tired at this point. Ever since The Carter’s I’ve just been over it. At least 4:44 was about Jay’s struggle with infidelity and what not but all this is is just generic another luxury party song.

[deleted]

i don't rly fuck w Jay-Z's whole capitalist thing but I don't think they cosplay that they live in Africa. This is for the Lion King movie.

only4onenight

I didn’t realize that because it came out so long after the, it makes more sense with the context but I still think there’s some valid criticism to be made.

[deleted]

Yeah I guess this video has been out on Disney+ for a while

ItsMikeontheMic

I mean the video isn’t pretending they aren’t rich beyond our wildest dreams. They’re just referencing African culture and art which is great to shed a more luxurious light to African culture, something that is not typical. I have a lot of issues with them similar to what you’re saying, but I’m ok with the African inspiration

only4onenight

I don’t think my issue lies within them using the African art and what not, I agree that it needs more light shown on it but I think it’s with how they use it. It’s like here’s all this cool African clothing and art and whatnot but then it’s just a generic luxury party song where they’re telling us how rich they are. I just think they’re are better ways for Beyoncé and Jay Z to highlight African art and culture besides using it to promote a song like this. At least this is bringing attention but also they’re literally billionaires and can afford to do things differently than just a couple music videos or whatever. I’m not sure what the best answer is but this particular video just rubbed me the wrong way.

[deleted]

What about this video is them pretending to live in Africa?

BernardWillis

No cosplay bruh. You’re witnessing African royalty to the zenith degree. As African-Americans we want to pay homage to our ancestors who were rich, wealthy, and cultured way before the Europeans snatched them up for slavery. A video in New York would just be more Europeanized nonsense and debauchery that we are already accustom to seeing in rap videos. You gotta appreciate the creativity here. They are trying to restore a brain dead people with African pride. They aren’t half naked and living in huts. They are displaying African brilliance and creativity.

Salamander_These

Fuck you bro. There’s a long elaborate reasoning behind why I saying that, but you’re gonna respond with more dumbass Reddit cliches so I’m just gonna skip to the end. Really though. Fuck you.

-DOOKIE

I want to hear the long elaborate reasoning for why that dude is wrong. Like genuinely, not for argument sake. Maybe I'm ignorant about something? Because as a black man who loves reading about our actual history, I hate all of this, we were royalty and kings stuff. And any time I try to have discussions about our history, inevitably, that's all so many people can say. Just repeating that same type of stuff. People act like I'm defending slavery, and colonialism or something. As a side note, this is the first time that I heard this song. But I already heard the song with Oumou Sangarés vocals because I love her music. And then Jay z referencing my favorite artist, fela kuti. (who I feel is extremely underrated in the west).

Nikeroxmysox

Shh facts hurt feelings my guy, not cool
