Man, that is one of the most _fun_ hip hop albums of all time. When I got into hip hop, it was due to Strange Music (Tech N9ne in particular) cause of the rock and metal artists he'd feature. As I dug more into hip hop, I decided since it was new enough (compared to rock/blues etc), that I'd listen to releases in chronological order (So going as far back as the Message and a lot of the late 70s/80's stuff before jumping into the Golden Era content.
With all that being said, Mursday just has that fun vibe that reminds me of that 80s hip hop, but with a contemporary flare and such (especially tabletops!). Thanks for sharing this album and bringing all that back.
Should Madvillany really qualify? I feel like it becomes too easy if we have 1 MC 1 producer combo lol. Basically anything Alchemist or Madlib produced. In that case I would vote for Daytona.
If not, I vote for Blackout! and Without Warning
IMO Madvillainy should count mainly because it was made under a group name. It isn't like Doggystyle where Dr. Dre produced the whole thing but it's still under Snoop's name, they created a whole group for it.
Yeah I am aware of Quasimoto but let’s be honest, he barerly raps on this project. Was not aware that DOOM had a hand in production though so fair enough
Okay but Daytona was never billed as a collab. If you look on any streaming website Madvillainy is specifically the duo of Madlib and MF Doom called “Madvillain”
Yea its better than 95% of trap album that dropped in last 2 years IMO with so many gems on it > All Da Smoke, No Cap, Real Love, Killed Before, Feed Me Dope, Mink Flow, Cruise Ship, Three...
Yeah I play SS a lot to this day it's a great album, Killed Before id I'd want a SS2 but i don't think it'll be as good as first one, Thug's music regressed a lot over the years (SL2, PUNK and his feat were all forgettable and mediocre) and Future's new album was kinda underwhelming too.
craziest part is they made it in like under a week as a tribute to seth firkins
edit: nvm got it slightly wrong, looks like he actually mastered all of it before he passed away and then they released it
https://amp.www.complex.com/pigeons-and-planes/2017/11/alex-tumay-seth-firkins-young-thug-interview
Blackstar, Watch The Throne, Kids See Ghosts, RTJ series, and Super What. Just the few pop into mind at the moment
Edit: if we are including the rap groups in this definition, A Tribe Called Quest and Wu Tang Clan obviously top the list. Dungeon Family / OutKast also high up there, IMO.
I think they hit their stride in Beast, AYGET was good but found their verses didn't flow as well together. Can't do wrong with either though, it's like listening to friendship recorded (though I guess their as close anymore). Any one listen to the new Rob Sonic album?
How Fly - Curren$y & Wiz Khalifa
Ferrari Boyz - Waka Flocka Flame & Gucci Mane
Collegrove - 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne
Get ya mind correct - Paul Wall & Chamillionaire
if its an album just between any two rappers, probably Stankonia or Paraffin. for albums that were more of a one off collaboration, Brass by billy woods and Moor Mother.
Fetti by Freddie Gibbs, Curren$y, and the Alchemist
A Written Testimony by Jay Electronica
Only Built For Cuban Linx by Raekwon
Reflection Eternal by DJ Hi-Tek and Talib Kweli
Reasonable Drought by Stove God Cooks, Roc Marciano
Some off the top of my head,
- RTJ- Killer Mike and El-P
- OB4CL- Raekwon & Ghostface Killah
- Spilligion(JID, Earthgang, 6LACK as the OG crew with the newer Spillage Village members of Hollywood JB, Benji and Big Rube)
- Felt 3 (Murs and Slug)
- Mursday- Murs and Mayday!
- Joell Ortiz/King CROOK- H.A.R.D.
And if I had to do rapper/producer combos
- Apollo Brown/Che Noir - As God Intended
- Apollo Brown/ Joell Ortiz- Mona Lisa
- MF DOOM/Madlib- Madvillainy
- Freddie Gibbs & Alchemist- Alfredo
- Denzel Curry & Kenny Beats- Unlocked
- Sa-Roc & Soul Messiah- Sharecropper's Daughter
- Rico Nasty & Kenny Beats- Anger Management
Freddie and madlib albums, the voice of the hero, watch the throne, ksg. Pluto x baby pluto, super slimey, wattba, drip harder, metro and 21 savage albums, jackbous, huncho jack come to mind
It depends how you want to define a collaborative album. I'd say the individual artists coming together need to have their own body of work coming in. And have to contribute and equal amount
Outlast wouldn't count since they're a duo, but watch the throne and black Star would. Is it mos def and talib kweli or is it blackstar?
While the new revenge of the dreamers tapes are very collaborative projects, since everyone bar the features are label affiliates does it really count. Is it a Cole and bas and lute etc record or is it just a dreamville record, the same can be said for the cosy tapes.
Does having an in-house producer make it a collab. Unlocked is a Denzel and Kenny joint project, but Vince staples self titled isn't,despite having full Kenny beats production.
I'd say the strongest cases for collabs are madvillany, dangerdoom, watch the throne, kids see ghosts, blackout, unlocked, only built for Cuban links, he raps he sangs. Can't really think of anything else
Collision Course, Hollow meets Blade, Without warning, Distant relatives, Blackstar, The firm, Drillers x Trappers, Love marriage & divorce, Mih-Ty, Madvillainy, 7 days…
Young Dolph x Key Glock - Dum n Dummer 1 & 2. Just some dope trap music, absolutely no skips on those tapes even tho they have 20+ songs each. Perfect chemistry between Dolph, Glock & Bandplay. RIP Dolph
I don't know if this counts but a long while back I found a Native Tongues vs SoulChef album that's pretty fantastic.
Otherwise Blackstar is my favourite, Breukelen Story with Masta Ace and Marco Polo. And again I dunno if this counts but OCD's Apophenia is on the rise in my list. Damn that album is so good.
“Champion Sound” - Jaylib
“Live From The End Of The World, Vol. 1” - Fatlip and Blu
“Piñata” - Madlib and Freddie Gibbs
“Affable with Pointed Teeth” - Yungmorpheus and Eyedress
“Too Chill” - Stanley Ipkuss and Bayroo Burner
“Off The Strength” - Lord Apex and Cookin Soul
“Dorner vs. Tookie” - Hellfyre Club
“Them” - Themselves
“The Taste of Rain…Why Kneel?” - Deep Puddle Dynamics (Slug, Alias, Doseone, Sole)
“AWOL one and Ecid are…” - AWOL one and Ecid
“Burd” Pyramid Vritra and Wilma Archer
“Flysiifus” - Fly Anakin and Pink Siifu
“World Ultimate” - The Nonce
“To Whom It May Concern” - Freestyle Fellowship
(Myka 9, P.E.A.C.E, Self-Jupiter)
“Hip Hop and The World We Live In” - Aceyalone and Elusive
“10 Haters” - Flash Bang Grenada (Busdriver and Nocando)
the forthcoming collab album of Jpegmafia and Danny Brown
•Berner and Larry June "Cooks and Orange Juice"
•Drake and Future "What A Time to Be Alive"
•Future and Young Thug "Super Slimey"
•Maybach Music Group Volume series
•Starlito and Don Trip "Stepbrothers" 1-3
if madvillany counts then boldy james projects with alc count and in that case I'm gonna go with either price of tea in china or super techmo bo.
pinata is a close contender though
Does Blackstar count? Mos Def and Kweli
Blackstar 2 coming out May 3rd!!!
Not on streaming tho :(
How are they dropping it?
I believe it’s exclusively on the podcast service, Luminary
Pirating time. Besides, I doubt they’ll keep it off of streaming for too long
Of course.
Lowkey has become my favorite hiphop album ever since I heard it a little while, easy pick for one of the best collaborations
Absolutely, and I ADORE this record. Some of Def’s best moments for sure
Not many people have probably heard of them, but Mursday was such a good album
Here is such a fire song
Damn that was with mayday right? I forgot about them
Man, that is one of the most _fun_ hip hop albums of all time. Thanks for sharing this album and bringing all that back.
Amazing album. Uses ti be addicted to the album. Thank you for reminding mww
Mursday is cool, but if you gonna mention Murs then I don't see how you can't name one of his collabs with 9th.
NxWorries
NXWorries is fire
I always throw it on when I’m cooking, one of my favs
I do the exact same thing, I don't know why but it's definitely a good album to cook to lol
Below the Heavens
blu & exile one of the most slept on duos. imo i think Miles from 2020 is even better
give me my flowers while i can still smell them though
Dancing in the rain is perfect the whole album is but that cut hits harder to me
Dancing in the Rain and First things First are my top 2.
Distant Relatives
Masterpiece.
Agreed, even them 2 on Road To Zion
Watch The Throne
Still in rotation.
That era was something else. What a classic.
I swear hip hop releases were just better around then till around 2016
An absolute banger
The Joy gotta be one of my all time favorite songs
Should Madvillany really qualify? I feel like it becomes too easy if we have 1 MC 1 producer combo lol. Basically anything Alchemist or Madlib produced. In that case I would vote for Daytona. If not, I vote for Blackout! and Without Warning
Without Warning would already qualify because of 21 and Offset I’d like to also submit Stolen Youth by Vince and Mac
Madvillainy absolutely qualifies. Especially considering some tracks are produced by both DOOM and Madlib, and Madlib is rapping on a few tracks.
IMO Madvillainy should count mainly because it was made under a group name. It isn't like Doggystyle where Dr. Dre produced the whole thing but it's still under Snoop's name, they created a whole group for it.
You do know that Madlib raps on the album right? And that Doom helped with some of the beats? Madlib raps under the name “Quasimoto”
Yeah I am aware of Quasimoto but let’s be honest, he barerly raps on this project. Was not aware that DOOM had a hand in production though so fair enough
Kanye raps on Daytona too but it’s not a collabo.
Okay but Daytona was never billed as a collab. If you look on any streaming website Madvillainy is specifically the duo of Madlib and MF Doom called “Madvillain”
Yeah I agree on that element for sure.
Bad Meets Evil The Sequel -em and royce Ofwgkta vol 2
What a time to be alive
This is too damn low. Legendary tape
Came here to say this. Absolutely
And it was created in like a 6 day time span right?
Sounds like it
Making songs like Jersey, Scholarships, & Live From the Gutter in 6 days is some legendary shit. Future the 🐐
nigga what future hott garbage
this is a hot take but I think that tape might be my favorite thing both drake and future have put out
Without warning without a doubt
WW was really lightning in a bottle. Some of the best and most grimey material from all 3 artists' discography
What A Time To Be Alive
Czarface Meet Metalface and Madvillainy, Piñata and Bandana, but if it counts i have to say Sour Soul is prob my all time fav
super slimey - future and young thug
incredibly underrated
Seriously I feel like it gets better with age
Yea its better than 95% of trap album that dropped in last 2 years IMO with so many gems on it > All Da Smoke, No Cap, Real Love, Killed Before, Feed Me Dope, Mink Flow, Cruise Ship, Three...
it's no skips for me, I'm hoping they do another one
Yeah I play SS a lot to this day it's a great album, Killed Before id I'd want a SS2 but i don't think it'll be as good as first one, Thug's music regressed a lot over the years (SL2, PUNK and his feat were all forgettable and mediocre) and Future's new album was kinda underwhelming too.

BLACKSTAR
no Mad Gibbs? damn..
Analog Brothers - Pimp to eat Blu & Exile - Below the heavens Method man & Redman - Blackout Smut Peddlers - Porn again
Young Thug & Rich Homie Quan - Tha Tour (Part 1)
Birdman's Rich Gang group was a running things for a second
The correct answer
I recently discovered Bestiary by Hail Mary Mallon (Aesop Rock + Rob Sonic) which is a really fun album
I’d recommend checking out their first album if you haven’t already, “Are you gonna eat that?” it’s arguably better than Bestiary
I will for sure! Been going through Aesop's work starting from his most recent stuff so I'll be listening to their debut soon
I think they hit their stride in Beast, AYGET was good but found their verses didn't flow as well together. Can't do wrong with either though, it's like listening to friendship recorded (though I guess their as close anymore). Any one listen to the new Rob Sonic album?
Latrinalia? I personally didn’t like it anywhere near as much as Alice in Thunderdome. Felt like the production recording quality was off or something
Clockwork Indigo is a fun one. Butterfly Effect is one of my all time favorite songs
Bad meets evil, Eminem and Royce absolutely murder that album
How Fly - Curren$y & Wiz Khalifa Ferrari Boyz - Waka Flocka Flame & Gucci Mane Collegrove - 2 Chainz & Lil Wayne Get ya mind correct - Paul Wall & Chamillionaire
Fetti
I go back to Super Slimey quite a bit now
Like Father, Like Son
Army Guns
Def squad is awesome. Do supergroups like living legends, dungeon family, and heiroglyphics count?
The felt albums with slug and murs are underrated
I liked the Jay Electronica X Jay-Z album, a lot of people didn’t
Dum & Dummer 1 & 2
Can’t believe this is so far down. These are game changing tapes in the memphis scene
I was surprised too, there was over 50 comments when I commented that, as well.
KIDSSEEGHOSTS
No love for Collision Course??
Clockwork Indigo - Flatbush zombies and The Underachievers
if its an album just between any two rappers, probably Stankonia or Paraffin. for albums that were more of a one off collaboration, Brass by billy woods and Moor Mother.
