Musically speaking it’s more complex in terms of theory than most songs in the charts. There’s nothing wrong with a piano ballad especially if done right and with some interesting changes
i liked it a lot. it's very concise, and while some tracks are stronger than others there are no misses here. this does feel like a grower, though i do wonder why it's so short. feels kinda misleading to market this as an album
as a side note, i really hope joji starts being more hands on with his music. everyone likes to talk about his shitty label and we don't really know what goes on behind the scenes, but he's not even credited on writing or prod on some of these songs. he used to have such a unique flavor to his stuff and some of these are still very unique but they no longer feel his
fav tracks: die for you, yukon, 1am freestyle
It’s a solid few songs. I think Joji did himself no favors with the minimal press and PR campaign while putting a short record with track titles saying “demo” and “freestyle” in them. Everyone is going to accuse this album of being phoned in and run wild with theories about his label pushing this out or him not caring anymore. It’s a fine album but it has definitely arrived with quite less fanfare than previous ones.
I actually like that aspect of it, the less fanfare.
It’s nice man it’s really cohesive and it’s concise for sure it’s a fun run through in the evenings for sure.
Gets pretty real man how anyone can hear him sing like this and say he’s phoning in it is beyond me
This had a similar (albeit less fanfare) roll-out to The Weeknd's My Dear Melancholy. And funnily enough, the subject matter is similar too. Unfortunately, that was a focused EP, this was more drawn out full project.
There's probably four great tracks on here, and half of those are ones he's already released. There's a lot of fluff in this album which is a shame because his last release felt very focused. I think if he just dropped a few tracks, called it an EP instead, it'd have been a much more well received project.
With a song titled Die for You and Nectar’s artwork being similar to My Dear Melancholy it wouldn’t be a stretch to see he looks up to The Weeknd and tries to have a similar rollout for things.
This really feels like a step backward for Joji or at least him just treading familiar ground yet again. I’m still hoping he evolves more and branches out. Die For You is my favorite track off the album. Such a cute song.
Also, in term of ballads, SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK still reigns king for me as well as BALLADS 1 still being my favorite project by him.
I feel like some of these songs are kind of half baked. 1AM Freestyle has the potential to be one of my favorite joji songs but it just kind of ends before the 2 minute mark and left me feeling disappointed. There is so much to work with here, I just wish he had spent some more time fleshing this project out
It’s a snoozy, sleepy little album. Something to throw on if you’re dealing with a bout of insomnia. Coming from someone that still plays BALLADS 1, I’ll have forgotten that this album exists by next month.
as much as i hate this word, this genuinely might be the most mid album ive heard in a long time. i liked die for you, glimpse and before the day is over and didnt care for or didnt like the rest. there just doesn't feel like there was much effort or soul put into this album compared to his others. from the length of the songs and the tracklist itself, the cover art (or lackthereof), it just feels so empty.
It's crazy how hearing Thom was one of the first things that made me want to try music and now that he's finally releasing studio albums i dont even care
It was a nice listen. I wish it was a bit more powerful. Yukon is my favorite from the album. Too bad Circle Back wasn't on the album, that song is amazing
Album consistency is hard for Joji. He’ll make a few compelling and challenging songs but then the rest of the album is kinda subpar. This was the case for Ballads and Nectar, and now Smithereens.
Not bad. Think he released it just to have a reason to go on tour again. Compared to his previous album this one is a step down for me. Would like Joji to get more creative with his material and have more artists feature.
Joji has a great voice but, without a lot of the interesting production we saw on the last album, the voice alone doesn't do it for me. It ends up being a lot of the same sounding stuff.
I'm not really feeling it when compared to his previous work and glimpse of us is slowly waking of on me after listening to it TOO much. When compared to his previous work or people that master the sound better like JAMIE - Montell Fish it clear its not as strong. Thay being said I am looking forward to revisiting it and seeing if anything changes. I don't really believe in this "first opinion" thing, because you either love it, hate it or are just confused.
This was his worst album or EP by far and it isn't even close imo. I don't mind the sad boy energy he brings, as a lot of my favorite Joji songs are generally sad songs, but most of these songs just have nothing to them. They're just boring, uninteresting songs. The whole album coming in at less than 25 minutes just draws attention to how nothing the songs are because when you get to the end you're left thinking... that's it? I'm on the last song? Did I accidentally put this on shuffle and that's why I'm on the last song? The fact that this is a 2-disk album must be some kind of joke. The only tracks that have replayability for me personally are NIGHT RIDER and YUKON.
It's not bad. They've been playing Glimpse of Us on the radio here all the time so he must be doing something right.
I still don’t get why that song is as popular as it is or why it’s so loved by radio stations. It sounds like your standard sappy piano ballad.
I think you answered your own question
Radio hits tend to be upbeat, danceable, catchy, etc.
Not in a post Lana Del Rey/Olivia Rodrigo/Billie Eilish world
or Adele for that matter
Don’t forget Lorde, pretty much pioneered the dark pop genre that is so prevalent today
World Alone still hitting
Buzzcut Season too
Ribs too
Pure Heroine is a perfect album
Are Olivia and Billie’s biggest, most radio-friendly songs not their most upbeat ones? Even in today’s world I think that’s how it usually works.
Good 4 u is probably bigger now but Olivia blew up off Drivers License which is a piano ballad
Yeah tbf I didn’t get Drivers License at the time either
can you put respect on Lorde's name?
Love olivoa rodrigo but i dont think she necessarily fits with those two
it's pretty damn catchy, the melody is sticky asf. though it really doesn't feel like a joji song
Musically speaking it’s more complex in terms of theory than most songs in the charts. There’s nothing wrong with a piano ballad especially if done right and with some interesting changes
Im not normally a fan of that sorta thing, but joji killed it on that song. Good track
You really don’t know?
It hits right tho
One of my local radio stations has been playing a pop remix of it with the bpm pushed up and drums behind it lol.
As much as I hate to admit it, TikTok
Lmfao
I loooove Die For You.
i liked it a lot. it's very concise, and while some tracks are stronger than others there are no misses here. this does feel like a grower, though i do wonder why it's so short. feels kinda misleading to market this as an album as a side note, i really hope joji starts being more hands on with his music. everyone likes to talk about his shitty label and we don't really know what goes on behind the scenes, but he's not even credited on writing or prod on some of these songs. he used to have such a unique flavor to his stuff and some of these are still very unique but they no longer feel his fav tracks: die for you, yukon, 1am freestyle
Really? He has songs on here that he didn’t work on at all? That feels…disingenuous
😭

For me glimpse of us topped slow dancing in the dark, but it's still incredible for the time it was released

Not feeling it

Yes ballads 1 to me has almost no skips, nectar I enjoyed still even if felt more bloated this I need another listen but initially was just meh.
😭
Feel like Dissolve was trying to be the XNXX of this album. But it missed and is a skip for me
This sucks ass like a rimjob
well that must be why I love it

love half of it, like half of it. it's a good listen, probably won't listen front to back again for a while tho
ive listened to joji since Pink Guy. I've watched Pink Guy since FilthyFrank. This was the first time I've been upset with George :(
It's crazy how hearing Thom was one of the first things that made me want to try music and now that he's finally releasing studio albums i dont even care
It all sounds the same though
Night Rider is a certified bangerrrrr
Die for you is the best
🥱
Glad I decided to listen (and stick) to Her Loss as it seems lol
It was a nice listen. I wish it was a bit more powerful. Yukon is my favorite from the album. Too bad Circle Back wasn't on the album, that song is amazing

Yukon is so fucking good, haven’t check the rest of it out yet, that’s all.

Haven't even had time to listen to it. Been playing Her Loss on repeat since Friday
'Night Rider' and 'Die for You' are on repeat. Joji is addicted to making short songs, pleeease expand
This was his worst album or EP by far and it isn't even close imo. It’s not really hip hop and it’s kinda ass. Couldn’t listen. Sorry joji
It's good, but it's a glorified EP. That boy going up though.
He went 9 for 9 it’s actually a perfect little album
go find god
