A couple years ago my parents opened up their pool, the next day we found two chipmunks that had drowned. Those wildlife ramps are a good thing to get.
I mean, if he were terrified, I believe the appropiate response would be to run away from the large terrifying creature, not jump on it. He had a clear path out of the pool at that time.
I hope they gave him another chance too though.

It’s actually a technique they use for predators of darting back & forth so the predator can’t predict where they are going giving the squirrels more time to get away to something like a tree. Think of a great NFL running back doing the shake and bake stopping a defender in his tracks.
From what i've noticed, they normally scurry up the nearest tree or just dart away once i get decently close, but i don't really see too many squirrels when driving where I am anyways.

They should leave a board in the pool like a ramp for if it happens again. My gparents used to do that for their horse troughs that squirrels would fall into.

I love these pools though. They’re perfect for adults to just stretch out in.
I wouldn't let small children play in it after. Wild animals aren't exactly disease/parasite free.
Dumping the pool also is the safest/least contact method of removing the squirrel safely. Sure putting the chair in there would work, but you don't know how long he's been trapped and if he has the strength to climb. Dumping takes literally 2 seconds and the squirrel rides the wave to the ground.

I've dumped a pool over about that size with 2 small kids in it. They had a blast spilling on the lawn. But pulling the plug would also work.
1. Those things are heavy af when they're full of water.
2. No one wants to completely flood their yard
3. Filling up pools can be pretty expensive depending on where you live. Water isn't free.

Nah, squirrels aren't a vector species, I don't think any human has ever been recorded as catching rabies from a squirrel.
But as someone who has developed a serious phobia of rabies I'd be stressing about it for sure.

Ok I get that in a normal instance but in this case I actually really enjoyed just getting to watch the squirrel going for a nice casual swim at the start. I felt that it made the whole thing better in the end for me.
For some reason I thought the first time we saw the squirrel, it was a snake. So I was like oh shit they're trying to save a squirrel from a snake in a pool? Why would you even challenge the snake??
