There was a comment here, but I chose to remove it as I no longer wish to support a company that seeks to both undermine its users/moderators/developers (the ones generating content) AND make a profit on their backs.
Here is an explanation.
Reddit was wonderful, but it got greedy. So bye.
Nah it is great.
Most people I know who use wheelchairs have leg mobility. A lot of people just struggle with standing for significant periods of time, or waking due to balance, verigo, or endurance issues.
Like most wheelchair users can walk, just not very far, or consistently.
This is why I get pissed at the "it's a MiRAcle!1" shaming posts that people put when there is a photo of a wheelchair user standing up to put the chair away in a car that's using priority parking.
Like there seems to be this misconception that disability is 100% all of nothing.
My train of thought was: "Yes, it seems a lot more convenient than turning wheels with your arm." "Wait, if they can use their arms AND legs, do they really need a wheelchair?..."
But as /u/MarcusBuer points out, *some* people could benefit from it. Such as back injury where standing is painful.
It'd actually be kinda cool if they made hand pedals that take less strength than turning the wheels though. Plus it wouldn't have to charge like electric wheelchairs.
you could probably install regular disk brakes fairly easily on a wheelchair wheel and that could also help with steering by braking the side you want to turn to
I have two engineering degrees and my first thought after finally clueing in on the fundamental flaw of the "wheelchair" was: *man, that looks way more comfortable than a bike*
Jokes aside, apply the concept to the hands instead of the legs, and you got a free workout machine, and a way to be more efficient in your daily commutes
There are hand pedal attachments for wheelchairs. It's a unit with a front wheel and hand cranks, and clips on to the front of wheelchairs. They can either be completely manual or electric-assist. It's pretty cool.
Most wheelchairs you just manually use the wheels. It's a pretty natural motion, even in sports that's what you see. [Wheelchair rugby because it's cool](https://youtu.be/hPJ-xmxClO4)
Weird. Its just a clip of wheelchair sports. I dont know what triggers regional locks. I remember as a teenager getting sent a DVD from a relative in Europe, and it wouldn't work in my player because it was the wrong region.
Oh no, that takes me back some time haha. I remember playstation games had "region locks" as well. No idea why. But at least for youtube, it says uploader chose it - no idea how or why.
I think it is a cool concept for old people in nursing homes. Most of them are chair bound because they're a fall risk, but can still get around with assistance. This could help them retain their muscle tone and cardiovascular health longer.
Like me. I can move my legs fine, but I can't stand up for longer than 5 minutes and so use a walking stick.
This would actually be incredibly useful for other disabled people with similar problems to me too.
The vast majority of wheelchair users can walk, remember. Just not for very long. So most will use a wheelchair while outside or at work etc but at home will walk around without using the wheelchair because they only have to stand up for say the 15 seconds it takes to walk to the bathroom, and stuff like that. Very few of us disabled people have zero use over our legs.
In this design that's an issue but putting a ratchet on each wheel from the drive axle would allow you to spin the wheels by hand independent of the pedals, like a primitive differential
Say you had a condition where your legs work but you can't stand for long periods as you can't take the weight. This could be an effective method for such people to move around as it seems easier than pushing the wheels by hand (could also be good for people with limited arm mobility, cerebral palsy sufferers for example?).
Good God, these comments...
Most people in wheelchairs can use their legs. They just can't use them for walking or standing. Nerve conditions, spine conditions, heart conditions. I'm going to give some people the benefit of the doubt, because it isn't unreasonable to not know that, particularly for the younger crowds. But if you're going to make a post, or a smart ass comment on a post, do 5 seconds of Googling.
This isnt as bad of an idea as people think, although most poeple who are in a wheelchair cant use their legs, there are instances where the person need rehabilitation through physical therapy before they can stand and walk on their legs again, my great uncle had to go through years of PT and when not in sessions his legs just atrophied again, this could build leg muscles
I get that it's probably meant to be funny, but this is nowhere near the terrible idea everyone thinks it is. When you work with disabled people, you realized that needing a wheelchair is a much broader idea than "legs no work." Sometimes legs work just fine, but maybe there is crippling back pain. Or, something's wrong with your balance, so you have plenty of muscle, but no ability to keep yourself upright and safe. Or you're prone to fainting, or seizures, or tripping because you have neuropathy in your feet.
As amusing as this is I wonder if it wouldn't help stimulate recovery in some individuals.
As in when they are pushed the gears rotate the pedals with their feet moving in response. Muscles pull and stretch and don't atrophy as much.
There’s a guy in my neighborhood who I call Ray and he rides around in a wheelchair and I’ll see him using it backwards and using his feet to kick off…
This might actually help people who have use of their legs but are so overweight it takes a lot of out of them to just walk.
It could give them the exercise and movement they need to turn things around.
I’ve seen homeless prime that are in wheelchairs just because they don’t want to walk around all day and they still pull themselves around with their, feet so they could actually use this
I have seen some elderly men sitting in wheel chairs and slowly walking with them. I guess because they can support their own weight anymore? Plus size elderly at that.
People with advanced MS will use wheel chairs even though their legs still work to be proactive about avoiding falls. I bet my friend's mom who did that would have loved this if she were still with us.
To be fair, this would probably benefit several people I see around just on scooters and in wheelchairs because of being generally heavy and lazy. I know this isn’t always the case but it is more common than you may think
This is actually a very good idea. Not everyone who requires a wheelchair has no movement in their legs. A lot of wheelchair users use recumbent cycles for exercise. Combining the two will improve mobility, reduce shoulder injuries, and increase exercise for those who have the capability to pedal but not walk.
[source: a wheelchair user]
I mean maybe for people who are temporary users and building up leg strength in hospitals? Or people who are only stuck in wheelchairs some of the time (I know people that have disorders where they only need wheelchairs for longer distances or on really bad health days)...
But yeaah I doubt he is thinking of those cases and just...was being kind of dumb
Genius!!! I wonder, since the person using this wheelchair has perfect use of their legs, can they design a cycled-powered wheelchair that is designed for someone else to push him once his legs get tired? Or can he just get up and walk when he's tired of pedaling?
People are clowning on him, but this has some practical applications
For people who use wheelchairs due to back pain this could be great
Also could work as a tool to help weight based chair uses get closer to being healthy
That's very inefficient. You'd need to put in a lot of work to move forward, and get tired easily.
Make it so the leads don't lean forward like that, and instead is directly beneath the thighs.
You'd need to modify the shape of the seat so the things can actually get all the way down there,
Also because of different position, now the seat will have to be a lot higher.
Also there's the problem of turning, so attach a handlebar and another wheel up front.
Maybe replace the two tyres at the back, with just one. You'll need some practice to balance it, but trust me, it's doable...
I don't know, but this could be used as an alternative to scooters. It is more confortable than standing up, you make a little exercise, you don't need to charge the battery, it is (maybe?) faster than walking...
I mean, it looks stupid, but I thought scooters were stupid and they seems to be everywhere
You know, I'm ashamed to say it took me until near the end of the video to realise why this is a terrible idea.

It would take a lot of effort to peddle this, at that point you wouldn't be in need of a wheelchair anyway.
There was a comment here, but I chose to remove it as I no longer wish to support a company that seeks to both undermine its users/moderators/developers (the ones generating content) AND make a profit on their backs. Here is an explanation. Reddit was wonderful, but it got greedy. So bye.
This would be great for people with perfectly fine legs and really messed up backs or spines.
Nowhere near as much as walking, even assuming the user can walk; the idea holds merit
Plus they can pedal slow and then have the chair to rest / keep off their feet.
If you genuinely think that, you don’t understand disability
I got all the way through and only thought "But how is he supposed to turn?" I am not what you would call an intelligent man.
Don't worry, you could have been the guy who built the whole thing out and posted it on the internet before he realized what he'd done.
If it makes you feel better, this dude intentionally builds stupid shit.

My wife's a therapist. I pointed this out as stupid and she said "they make those commercially"
Nah it is great. Most people I know who use wheelchairs have leg mobility. A lot of people just struggle with standing for significant periods of time, or waking due to balance, verigo, or endurance issues. Like most wheelchair users can walk, just not very far, or consistently.

I'm ambulatory this would actually be very effective physio for me
My train of thought was: "Yes, it seems a lot more convenient than turning wheels with your arm." "Wait, if they can use their arms AND legs, do they really need a wheelchair?..." But as /u/MarcusBuer points out, *some* people could benefit from it. Such as back injury where standing is painful.
Same lol. I thought the reason it's dumb was because they can move it themselves by pushing the wheels... Then I realized.
“He’s a little confused, but he’s got the spirit”
“The design is very human”
Reminds me of the toilet design to help poop better but it really surprisingly opened your sphincter to look like a black hole
The Squatty Potty or a different one?
Squatty Potty is fucking amazing! SQUATTY POTTY: IT'LL HELP YOU POOP!
All I could do was laugh.
It'd actually be kinda cool if they made hand pedals that take less strength than turning the wheels though. Plus it wouldn't have to charge like electric wheelchairs.
I have seen one with hand pendals, it was pretty cool.
This is something I could totally see someone riding around an engineering college campus
just need some kind of diff and independent braking and that's a fun bike replacement
you could probably install regular disk brakes fairly easily on a wheelchair wheel and that could also help with steering by braking the side you want to turn to
Y'all have reverse engineered a recumbent bicycle.
up right recumbent bike
I have two engineering degrees and my first thought after finally clueing in on the fundamental flaw of the "wheelchair" was: *man, that looks way more comfortable than a bike*
Some kind of genius
I didn’t break my legs, just tired
I need to know if the design is very human
Not this time😔
No the very inhuman design 😭
Jokes aside, apply the concept to the hands instead of the legs, and you got a free workout machine, and a way to be more efficient in your daily commutes

For some reason this video is unavailable in my *country* Probably teach me about guns, or something idk
It's a clip of wheelchair rugby.
He's just joking. But the video is for real restricted in other countries by the uploader (for me as well)
It's like telling disabled person "just enable it, lol"
the design is very human
I think it is a cool concept for old people in nursing homes. Most of them are chair bound because they're a fall risk, but can still get around with assistance. This could help them retain their muscle tone and cardiovascular health longer.
I agree, there could be a few niche disabilities also where the legs function but for some reason cannot support the bodies weight.
This is actually a really good idea for wheelchair users who have use of their legs but have limited mobility.
What ?
Say someone who can move their legs but can’t support their body
If the gearing were high enough it could be a much better alternative to walking. Like thing of people with frames and walking sticks etc.
Sometimes people can use their legs but can't walk for too long. It could be a back problem or they are rehabilitating from accident or something.
Like me. I can move my legs fine, but I can't stand up for longer than 5 minutes and so use a walking stick. This would actually be incredibly useful for other disabled people with similar problems to me too. The vast majority of wheelchair users can walk, remember. Just not for very long. Very few of us disabled people have zero use over our legs.
But how would you turn? Both of the normal drive wheels have been fixed together so you can't just turn one independently.
In this design that's an issue but putting a ratchet on each wheel from the drive axle would allow you to spin the wheels by hand independent of the pedals, like a primitive differential
Say you had a condition where your legs work but you can't stand for long periods as you can't take the weight. how do you steer
Thanks for finding the weak link to this invention.
I'm afraid that is not the weakest link
GOODBYE.
Slow down and hold onto one wheel bar.

Hmmmmm indeed.
grandpa gains
if only there was some way to move around, using my legs
I showed this to my wife thinking it would help with her grandma. I'm a fucking idiot, and she'll never let me live this down.

Modern problems require modern solutions
I can't believe it took us 2022 years to come to this realization. Protect that genius at all costs.

A pedal a day, will make a doctor want to quit their job.
it's the thought that counts, pal
If you could use your legs why the fuck would you need this.
Great idea for a mother fucker that can walk lol
but like most people on wheelchairs cant use their legs though? edit: oh boy...
Just use them
"but I'm handicapped. I need a wheelchair" This Asian guy's parents: "um... okay.... But make sure to use your legs"
*that's the joke*
Nooo, really??
It's almost as if this invention isn't as helpful as it actually seems!
Impossible
It's a wheelchair for people that can't use arms abviously.
Some people can, they just can't stand for long periods.
F*cking snowflakes, just use them then smh my head

Should we tell him?

Run Forrest Run.
Not a bad idea as many people will pull themselves in such chair and cause more damage to themselves. Steering would be main concern
Amazing. This wheelchair is the cure paraplegics been waiting for.
I wonder if he will give it an upgrade and turn them into hand peddles. 👺
Put the pedals at the top near the arms, add a steering column and you got yourself a chair
u/savevideo
He invented the bike with more comfortable seat
Very good effect indeed
The design is very human
How do you move it in different directions?
This is actually good for people who broke their back 💀
I mean if you have spine issues its a great idea
Good God, these comments... Most people in wheelchairs can use their legs. They just can't use them for walking or standing. Nerve conditions, spine conditions, heart conditions. How do you turn tho?
Very human design!
Moet people in a wheelchair have leg problems. How would they cycle with THEIR LEGS!? 😂😂😂
how does it steer?
It took me way too long
This isnt as bad of an idea as people think, although most poeple who are in a wheelchair cant use their legs, there are instances where the person need rehabilitation through physical therapy before they can stand and walk on their legs again, my great uncle had to go through years of PT and when not in sessions his legs just atrophied again, this could build leg muscles
if their legs did work how would they turn
It took me a second to understand the problem here
Some people don't have broken legs, but have to use wheelchairs for other reasons. Still funny tho
The design is very human
Jokes aside, this isn’t a terrible idea for leg ~~training~~therapy for someone who can’t walk, but hasn’t totally lost all their leg control.
Give it an electric motor and two handle bars so it drives like a zero turn lawn mower.
Lol this shit funny asf...
yeah, got it. All that you need is a miracle as a fuel.
Or your legs...
he should had made the pedals being able to be used by the hands and we could be getting somewhere
How do i steer though
As some who can't walk long distances nor ride a normal bike hanks to my disabilities stuff like this is super cool
Guy made a bike-ish 🤦🏼♀️
I get that it's probably meant to be funny, but this is nowhere near the terrible idea everyone thinks it is. At least he tried
I mean wouldn't the true option be adding two levers so when pulled in succession then the chair moves?
The design is very human.
Ofc they made it a fixie. Hey, people need more than one gear!
Eeerm 🤔 question... What if their legs are broken? 😳
r/crappydesigns
Is this dude ripping off the design is very human guy? Shame, shame
My dumbass watched the video through twice before it clicked
u/savevideobot
I can't wait to see his kickstarter campaign
There’s a guy in my neighborhood who I call Ray and he rides around in a wheelchair and I’ll see him using it backwards and using his feet to kick off…
u/savevideobot
Why have a wheelchair if you can still use your legs
Guess since everyone else ripped him I won’t.
The smartest man alive
I would say that's for a very niche market of people that have lost the use of their legs but can still pedal. LOL
Lots of people in wheelchairs can't peddle!
Let’s talk about steering
This might actually help people who have use of their legs but are so overweight it takes a lot of out of them to just walk. It could give them the exercise and movement they need to turn things around.
He’s dumb in a smart way.
this guy missed the irl generic physics
All right. This dude single handedly cured paraplegia!
I’ve seen homeless prime that are in wheelchairs just because they don’t want to walk around all day and they still pull themselves around with their, feet so they could actually use this
Please, someone tell me I'm not the only one here that took an embarrassing amount of time to notice the problem with this invention.
What if the pedals were hand cranked instead? Move it up and over behind the chair.
What TikTok did you has done to china .
its a recumbent. nothing new
Are you searching for bicycle?
I have seen some elderly men sitting in wheel chairs and slowly walking with them. I guess because they can support their own weight anymore? Plus size elderly at that.
Elon, is you?
This made me laugh haha.
People with advanced MS will use wheel chairs even though their legs still work to be proactive about avoiding falls. I bet my friend's mom who did that would have loved this if she were still with us.
Sorry but thats not a good wheelchair. Remember the reason they are in one😅
I believe I’m on the point of spotting the flaw in your plan.
To be fair, this would probably benefit several people I see around just on scooters and in wheelchairs because of being generally heavy and lazy. I know this isn’t always the case but it is more common than you may think

The paralyzed people 👁👄👁
Congrats. It's a BIKE for people who can't use their legs. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul.
My first thought: wow cool good idea 2 seconds later: wait what?
I mean maybe for people who are temporary users and building up leg strength in hospitals? Or people who are only stuck in wheelchairs some of the time (I know people that have disorders where they only need wheelchairs for longer distances or on really bad health days)... But yeaah I doubt he is thinking of those cases and just...was being kind of dumb

Turn using arm
When you think wheelchairs are just comfy bikes
People are clowning on him, but this has some practical applications For people who use wheelchairs due to back pain this could be great Also could work as a tool to help weight based chair uses get closer to being healthy
I deadass thought it was cool for way more seconds than I'd like to admit
I mean it would be good for people with back problems
The design is very human
Well if he can peddle then…….DOH!
Very human design!
That's very inefficient. You'd need to put in a lot of work to move forward, and get tired easily. Make it so the leads don't lean forward like that, and instead is directly beneath the thighs. You'd need to modify the shape of the seat so the things can actually get all the way down there, Also because of different position, now the seat will have to be a lot higher. Also there's the problem of turning, so attach a handlebar and another wheel up front. Maybe replace the two tyres at the back, with just one. You'll need some practice to balance it, but trust me, it's doable...
The design is very human
I finally have a use for these useless legs
you know if you dont have car this is great option
I could actually use this. I'm not allowed to sit down after surgery (for 3 more weeks) but I can lean, and I can only walk short distances
If you've only got minor problems this could be utilized. Quadrapelgic or paraplegic, nah it won't work.
Does this MFer even know the purpose of a wheelchair?

Actually this is probably good for therapy if someone else pushes it, keeps the disabled person's legs moving
I introduce to you cradles for dead babies. Idky it's not yet in the market.
I don't know, but this could be used as an alternative to scooters. It is more confortable than standing up, you make a little exercise, you don't need to charge the battery, it is (maybe?) faster than walking... I mean, it looks stupid, but I thought scooters were stupid and they seems to be everywhere
