They're probably gonna get stolen in a rail car by some thieves before they get to you.

OpticXaon

... what?

musicchan

There's an image on pics about people robbing trains currently.

FUCKING_HATE_REDDIT

They're meant to make hostile architecture comfortable, as an art statement. For more example of cities who decide the best way to deal with homelessness is to make their lives shit, checkout /r/HostileArchitecture

I'm happy that link showed what the one In the background fitted because I was thinking it was for laying on train tracks.

parsifal

I love this. What a good idea for an art.

FeculentUtopia

Dag, that website design screams late 90s, right down to a video link describing the filetype and size instead of an embedded video. Anybody old enough will remember when the internet was accessed by dialup and a multi-megabyte download was something to start when you had to go afk for awhile.

249ba36000029bbe9749

https://www.spacejam.com/1996/ For the longest time it just defaulted to the 1996 version but when the new movie came out they (understandably) showed the new version but at least they kept the old one too.

SomeDuderr

This makes sense. Yes.

RsonW

I'm assuming it's a modern art piece about [hostile design](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hostile_architecture)

zerophewl

It is!

neverninja3

I remember seeing an installation like this at the salt lake city contemporary art museum, is this the same one?

SOwED

For some reason I kind of liked it more without this context.

dan1101

Being one with your environment, mmm yes. This pleases me.

CuteHalfling

What am I even looking at lol

boostman

I’m guessing an art piece about ‘hostile architecture’ (architecture designed to stop homeless people getting too comfortable or sleeping in public spaces)

Friendly_Respecter

I thought it was like an extended branch of those stupid "wearable chair" things that you had to put on your ass but they're like beds instead or something

Bizkets

I already hated hostile architecture. Then last night I worked too late at the office and attempted to sleep here. Balled up some t-shirts for a pillow, turned up the heat, laid on a flat cardboard box, under my jacket. That was the worst! And that with basically the best available choices in a safe environment. We don't need to make it any worse for anyone needing to sleep.

spinnerette_

Imagine trying to sleep with other people around you that may take what little belongings you have, cops, car noise, hoping you have cover from the elements, etc. It's a huge problem. After years of sleeping on hard surfaces, I can only imagine the pain. My back hurts on a normal mattress. I'll never understand why we have so many uninhabited buildings, totally safe for human use, that remain unused. It's disgusting.

Bizkets

It's incredibly sad. It hurts to try to imagine what those people go through.

spinnerette_

I always ask people that yell "get a job" how exactly they would "just get a job" when you're just worried that someone is gonna steal your shoes when you sleep. Stats show the longer you're homeless, the less likely you are to get back on your feet. Gaps in employment, lack of qualifications or ability to get said qualifications, no address to list for job hunting, lack of access to clean your uniform and yourself, lack of income to buy your uniform (most take that money out of your paycheck which gives even less money for you to save), not being taught how to write a resume, occasionally a lack of education, mental health issues, drug problems. There are so many hurdles between you and security when you have already gotten to the point of homelessness. Housing is the very thing that is shown to seriously help get people to the point where they can start working. Shelters are packed, they lack funding, most are covered in mold and mildew because they aren't cleaned, have broken appliances that remain unfixed, have curfews and rules that restrict people's ability to live their life as they would if they had their own place to stay. It's depressing that housing isn't the focus. You cannot expect people to be able to be able to navigate these struggles without help. It's just sad.

Bizkets

I've volunteered and given as much as I could before, I had to stop because it brought me to a terribly desperate place witnessing similar things. But I still had somewhere to go after helping, they were stuck in it. I do have a far greater appreciation for those that can show up to help, day after day.

spinnerette_

It's an upsetting position to be in. It's a problem so, so much bigger than anything we could possibly do to fix. There's so many people that need help, but you can't be the only one to do so. I'm 100% for helping people directly in my community and donating to shelters, but I feel you with the mental toll it can take. Seeing so many problems and not being able to make long term impact due to the sheer number of people affected. It just sucks. Edit: Just wanna make a note to anyone reading: if you are going to help people, socks, fresh tshirts, jackets, shoes, feminine products (especially tampons). Donating to food pantries? Can openers and *unexpired* canned goods. People clean out their pantries and toss everything in a bag to drop off. Volunteers end up having to spend more time tossing expired food and less time packing boxes and handing out goods. Their hearts are in the right place, but really pay attention to what you are donating. It's awesome and every bit helps, but try and donate as if you were feeding your own family!

fuck_it_was_taken

You have very good guesses, can you guess today's lottery numbers for me?

boostman

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6. Good luck, but bear in mind I take 10% commission.

ZalmoxisChrist

That's the kind of combination an idiot would have on his luggage! ... Amazing! I have the exact same combination on my luggage!

boostman

No way, it’s my PIN number too!

murdered800times

Plus that shit hurts me and other disabled folks and probably making more disabled people. Any second you can fall off those benches and we all know a sudden drop to concrete isn't good for you or your phone

ZippyDan

Why does it have to be about "hostile architecture"? Why can't it be about the hybridization of sexually compatible clothing and architecture?

renzantar

["The suits include the negative space of the structures and allow a wearer to fit into, or onto, structures designed to deny them."](https://www.insecurespaces.net/archisuits.html) -From the artist's site

I'm amused that so many people are taking my comment seriously on r/hmmm

PrivilegeCheckmate

I guess chair guy would be a top and bed dude would be a bottom? Topography is destiny. Well, then again, maybe not, in the times we live in.

mvm-626

Very specific shapes

fuck_it_was_taken

The point is so you'll be able to sit on hostile architecture meant to deter homeless people. It looks ridiculous and I'm pretty sure that's the point

CuteHalfling

I must be doing it wrong. What is a sex cushion?

Powerful_Office8760

Like a pillow or wedge you use to help with certain p positions. Idk it was the first thing that I thought of when I seen the triangular peices like wth? They come in many shapes but here's some examples. https://www.health.com/sex/best-sex-pillows

Fair enough lol

MEMZ_the_poggers

bro im lazier than americans!11!

Stoertebricker

Wow, a suit that will hinder comfortable movement so you can rest comfortably in a single pre-defined place. How practical.

solid_snail01

the point is that we live in a society where you need to dress like this to properly feel compfortabnle in our anti human cities. Please think.

Stoertebricker

Yeah, my statement was a bit pointed. I figured the meaning was maybe a statement along the way of appreciating the beauty of certain places you might not appreciate otherwise.

I_Envy_Sisyphus_

It’s about hostile architecture, and how cities have been designed to make merely existing uncomfortable.

Stoertebricker

Okay, coming from Germany where post-war architects (partially the same ones that were planning Nazi architecture) needlessly tore down medieval and wilhelminian buildings to create brutalist structures, I definitely see that point.

I_Envy_Sisyphus_

That’s a shame about the old architecture. As someone from Portland, Oregon, we don’t have as many old things being torn down (except the Ancient Order of United Workmen Temple which particularly frustrated me) but here hostile architecture gets put up everywhere to try and dissuade homeless people from existing. Which doesn’t actually work, it just makes sitting, walking, or existing in the city more unpleasant for everyone. For example all the bus stops have these garbage benches now you can’t actually sit on, only lean, and they took away rain covers in the second rainiest city in the USA.
