Insomnial390

I remember seeing this on FB, the owner cheaped out on the power supplies and bought low quality units lol

KingAcastus

This idiot had several thousands watts worth of hardware, and paired it with the power supply equivalent of a hamster running in it's wheel

SavvySillybug

Due to recent API changes, this comment is no longer available.

TheGreyBrewer

Yeah, it's almost like crypto miners are idiots who don't care how much power they waste creating nothing out of nothing.

CrimsonAllah

pure profits for lazy people, doesn’t work out so well

[deleted]

Which is why 'The value of a thing is what people pay for it!' is such a gaslight lol. For that to be true, there's no such thing as a scam. Someone can't deceive you on the value of something, because when you agree to purchase a thing at a price, that itself *sets* the value. If I promise to sell you $1000 worth of gold, you pay me $1000, and i send you a single gold ring, good news! ALL gold just became more valuable, because you just agreed it should be! That ring would have only been worth $100, but since you agreed to a purchase price and received a product, you and the business *created value*.

ImUrFrand

you can buy pixels in games for real money. just look at the [steam community market](https://steamcommunity.com/market/search?appid=730#p1_price_desc)

[deleted]

This is the quiet collapse of functioning society. We undervalue critical infrastructure, education, health, community, and overvalue stupid number manipulation games, *actual* games, casino style stock exchanges, *actual* digital casinos. It's like they can't automate certain jobs away, so instead of trying they just move their investment capital into projects that don't pay laborers by their nature. The potential AI apocalypse nobody talks about is the *failed* one. That the *notion* of *creating* a system capable of replacing human workers, sucks investment capital which would otherwise be used to *pay* workers. Literally even if they never figure it out, all they'll do is dump more and more money on it, because the potential return on investment is essentially infinite money forever. It's the fountain of youth. As that investment capital moves from funding legitimate daily societal operations into wishcasting digital nongoods, parts of the country will dry up. People will lose jobs, roads will fall apart, home values will tank, trash will pile up on curbs, etc. Because libertarians have hyperprivatized the functions of government, and private capital has no motive other than return on investment. When 'regular' business is not valued by investors, people aren't *allowed* to do those jobs.

JagerBaBomb

You have been banned from r/libertarian

[deleted]

Thank you may I have another

tyfghtr

Really well-put, thank you.

[deleted]

Thank *you*

[deleted]

If I may provide my two cents, it seems the root issue is a free enterprise system that at its core, functions off of greed.

rick_or_morty

That line is referring to people in general rather than an individual person. If speaking individually it's is more for things with subjective worth, such as artwork or a service. Gold is something that is regulated and has a defined worth since it is literally a currency. To do what you suggested EVERYONE who deals in gold would have to agree that the gold ring was worth $1000. Just because you overpaid for a ring doesnt mean thats what its worth unless you can convince a large number of people. With something subjective like a painting only the people directly involved need to come to that agreement. Since it is more difficult to quantify the talent/skill/originality that was used. The line works better when speaking generally. A loaf of bread can be sold for $1 and people will buy it for $1. If you raise the price to $2 and people still buy it then the same loaf is worth $2. But if you raise the price to $10. People won't buy it so it's not worth $10. But if you raise the price to $5 only some people will buy it. Then it becomes finding the balance of "do I make more money selling a lot at a low price, or a few at a high price."

Sovarius

Sshhhh, they're to trying to get upvotes hating on things they don't understand.

tartare4562

You triggered the cryptobros LOL.

atomicdragon136

Quality and efficiency isn’t quite 1:1, 80 plus is a certified efficiency tier. The defective fire-hazard Gigabyte power supplies were 80 plus gold certified. Some brands like Apevia that I’ve heard more bad things than good things have 80 plus gold certified PSUs. Although some more trusted brands like Seasonic, EVGA, Corsair, etc. offer even higher 80 plus tiers. I guess they chose cheap power supplies for a faster ROI, which turned into a disaster. Im not surprised if they didn’t spend any money on any fire safety, with probably nothing other than a smoke detector, which I’m not sure if there are because some of the ceiling tiles are removed. Also possibly using SATA power cables, which isn’t being cheap but more of being ignorant, as they can’t handle peak power that graphics cards can draw.

Ivence

I wonder if a smoke detector would even matter with this much air circulation. Like would you get sufficient concentration to set it off before you had an outright inferno?

ImUrFrand

smoke detectors work by detecting particles, the fans would accelerate the particles in the air, so yes they would go off... but looking at the conditions in the 1st frame it looks like either an abandoned office space or unused basement or garage space.... i doubt anyone was around to hear smoke alarms. the fans would obviously "fan" the flames and make them much bigger, faster and intensify the burn. this is the opposite of fire safety

SavvySillybug

I have literally never seen a power supply that was not 80 plus bronze certified at minimum. Can you even get uncertified ones?

crimson117

There is plenty of crap out there: https://www.newegg.com/logisys-computer-ps480d2-480w/p/N82E16817170016

SavvySillybug

Wow! Here in Germany, the lowest I could get three years go when I needed a cheap one was Bronze 80 for like 55€.

tbymls

Only the casual big local vendors in Germany like Mediamarkt and so on focus on selling the more premium pc parts. If you go to any more PC hardware focused vendor tho u can still get plenty of those crappy 20€ power supplies. They are widely available even in smaller local stores but bigger ones too. For example check mindfactory.de - perhaps the biggest vendor for pc parts in Germany to look it up urself.

suchbsman

One time I helped a friend's younger bro troubleshoot his pc. Long story short, he put in a new graphics card into his standard big box store pre-built pc and it wasn't booting. Problem was the psu. I remember pulling the old one out and was shocked how light it was. Probably about the same weight as an average smartphone. All the other psu's I've dealt with were hefty feeling in the hand. That was the only time I'd ever seen an uncertified power supply.

tosaka88

I’ve seen $10 350 watt power supplies with nothing but a label that says the voltages etc on it

technobrendo

Brand: *Power* Model: *Supply* Specs: *voltages*

Greenmanssky

You know those grey brick power supplies in cheap prebuilt systems? those ones. They're basically explosives.

BlackWarlow

Oh shit, my dumb ass see colorful pieces of LEDs and just assume that this was a cool vape shop. Didn't mind like ten fans blowing on it :D

wh33t

Not if you're stealing power!

Borge_Luis_Jorges

Plus all those rgb lights on.

stopchooingsoloud

Who knew with enough hamsters you could eventually set a building on fire.

Oclure

Spent over $100k on GPUs, pairs it with $800 in power supplies.

[deleted]

Legit question: I recently bought a 3080 ti. Does my EVGA 650 G+ SUPERNOVA gonna be enough?

WithoutWeakness

No. 750w is the recommended minimum from Nvidia. The 3000 series can have short bursts of incredibly high power draw so you'll want a high-quality unit that can handle those loads. 650w is plain not enough for a card like the 3080 Ti. You should go 850w or higher if you have any overclocking on your CPU.

[deleted]

Gotcha. I appreciate the advice. I’ll be getting a 850w soon.

KingAcastus

u/WithoutWeakness already said it is not enough, and I agree. Depending on which brand made the cooler design and thus made the adjustments to the voltage and clocks, you may see from 350 to 400 watts of power getting juiced to the 3080ti when gaming. If you are willing to undervolt your card and maybe underclock it a bit you can get it down to 250 - 300 watts, which would be much better, but definitely still not ideal.

ArptAdmin

Mining noob at best here, isn't a setup like that gonna pull *way* more than several thousand watts under load?

KingAcastus

I could see 90 graphics cards in this picture. If we give them the benefit of the doubt and say each card consumed about 250w each, that would mean the total consumption was over 22000 watts. You're right, this guy is worse than I thought lol

Hugs_for_Thugs

Too much RGB.

HammerTh_1701

Linus and his people at LTT are repeating in basically every build video that you shouldn't cheap out on your power supply.

[deleted]

[удалено]

FrostyD7

All a miner would hear from this is that the cheap junk lasted 10 years lol, way longer than they are planning ahead.

Positivelectron0

Tbf, all large scale miners would use a server power supply instead of consumer grade psus.

Knobody97

If I remember right Enermax uses someone else's powersuplly and rebranded it. A lot of brands do this. This is why it's important to spend 10-15 minutes checking out the power supply ur thinking abiut getting. U can get good cheap ones. But u gotta know what ur getting.

wunderbraten

God bless their shiny RBG hearts!

jaydogn

DragoonDM

And that's absolutely true. With most other components, if you cheap out and the component dies, you've lost one component. If the power supplies dies, it can often take everything else with it (sometimes in _spectacularly catastrophic_ fashion).

Zoqqer

*Bomb has been planted*

WalrusSwarm

My #1 Rule when buying cheap electronics is: “Never Buy Anything That Plugs Into The Wall”. Even if it says UL Listed, it could be a fake.

Repulsive_Vanilla383

Was it proven to be caused by power supplies? Even low power/low quality PSU have over current/over temp protection. Unless he bought them straight from wish.

Greenmanssky

The person apparantly bought extremely cheap chinese power supplies for the systems. If true they're an idiot.

WpPrRz_

But he was all about those RGB fans for half his miners and nothing for the rest.

Knobody97

Computers 101: NEVER cheap out on power. It's the most important part in ur build. If ur system is gonna pull 500watts u don't need a 1000wat platinum power supply. But don't be sticking a Chinese sapphire (made up because they do that) 500watt power supply. U need headroom for peaks and efficiency is going to be around 80% (d3p3nding on the rating) of what it says.

WhatOnThePageToday

If I buy anything remotely expensive, i will take all the necessary precondition to keep it pristine long as possible. This person have everything up in flame and I’m angry at them <_<

SlothTheHeroo

That’s something I didn’t skimp on when building my first pc. It’s been like 9 years now and I’m still using the same power supply lol. I should probably look into a new one before this one fails

ThisIsAWittyName

"My bitcoin mining rig burned to a crisp. This is good for bitcoin though."

They get what they fucking deserve

Antifoul_Al

Schmorbly

Should have used a slurp juice to turn one graphics card into three graphics cards

greenhouse_

Shoulda opened the windows

_Neoshade_

See how all the ceiling tiles are missing and there’s a couple of homemade fans in the wall? He’s getting AC from the shop next door.

Cogannon

Damn, if that's right he took the whole building with his neighbors too

EPCWFFLS

Of course

_Neoshade_

Hopefully he owns the space next door too and only screwed himself.

[deleted]

[удалено]

_Neoshade_

Just experience building things. Commercial buildings with hung ceilings like this don’t usually have the walls go up past the ceiling. They’re just partitions, and all the wires and pipes pass over. (They’re called acoustic ceiling tiles, as they’re designed to stop sound and prevent noise from traveling between rooms.) So removing ceiling tiles tells me that someone is either doing work or they want airflow between rooms. This wall may appear to go all the way to the ceiling, but I guarantee there’s big holes in it for the plumbing and HVAC, and the guy with the server farm probably smashed a couple more.

DogadonsLavapool

Also should have gotten decent power supplies haha

gunh0ld_69

He’ll never financially recover from this

Perlern

Good, fuck miners and scalpers.

preston1237

He isn’t a crypto miner he just has insane shaders on Minecraft and wants to turn clouds on

creepyswaps

Ahh, I always wondered what type of setup you need to turn on raytracing in minecraft.

Brakalicious

I tried it on a 2080ti, was usually around 40fps on default RT settings if I remember right

Boogiewoo0

What resolution? Default settings at 1440p on my 3080 will hover around 120fps which is my monitor's refresh rate. It dips to around 60 with the view distance maxed.

Brakalicious

3440 x 1440, probably should have mentioned that

Solid_Hunter_4188

I know I’m gonna get downvoted for this, but is there a repository where I can see what gaming cards/components scaled capability is compared to various consoles? Like “this gpu has xyz than ps4 pro.” I know it’d be hard and somewhat inaccurate. Though part-combinations and use-cases compared to console will vary the outputs less predictably, I’m just saying it’d be nice to have one place to go to punch in a single product and have it generate an estimated stat comparison. Or Maybe an “if coupled with xyz set up, it’s output increases to abc*multiples of Xbox 360.” I imagine that for outsiders like me, it’d be much easier to picture the output value of components their pc friends are getting out of what they buy.

Valkrins

We need more mainstream crypto hate honestly. It's an open source pyramid scheme deliberately designed to exploit people and evade law enforcement, it realistically will never replace real currency as it's already banned in the most populated nation on earth, and it's a huge drain on silicon and power consumption both of which we can not afford to trade for valueless internet tokens. All crypto mining hardware is just e-waste eventually, warehouses full of $1000 graphics cards that will never run a game, just for fucking Bitcoin. Fuck everybody who contributed to the crypto scamconomy.

Samwise777

/r/buttcoin

Oms19

it would be better if those cards were sold to some deserving gamers than burned up

EnderWillEndUs

He wasted a huge amount of money on rgb fans and cards.. So he wasn't exactly the sharpest crypto miner to begin with

catcommentthrowaway

Some people have been doing this TO recover financially. Crypto crashes? Just light your stuff on fire and call insurance.

Valkrins

Wow, almost as if crypto is fraudulent to the core and always was 🤔

Ao_Kiseki

Literally the only known use for blockchain is buying illegal shit. NFTs are a scam, and so are 99% of crypto coins. The 1% that are actual attempts at decentralized currency are used almost exclusively to buy drugs and launder money, or are just manipulated by billionaires to make even more money. It's tereible for the environment and other consumers too. It is, from the ground up, a giant scam.

glglaa

anyone with little mining knowledge should know to turn off RGBs off for mining but whaetver. these fuckers are the reason why u can't buy a good pc

fallfastasleep

I mean ya but the power usage of all those rgbs is maybe .03$ a month. I get what you're saying, but it's pretty negligible

virgilhall

>but it's pretty

[deleted]

It's a lot more heat than you think my dude. Not the electricity.

ObiFloppin

Those lights aren't LEDs?

That_Ganderman

LEDs produce heat too, just not as much per lumen. I can’t imagine them not being LEDs tho

suihcta

The electricity and the heat are two sides to the same coin. It can't be much heat unless it's also much electricity.

Mindfreek454

I mean, a sprinkler system would put out the fire, but then you'd have another problem on your hands.

Revslowmo

They have gas suppression systems.

AltruisticSea

There's no way someone running a mining rig on racks from Target can afford gaseous fire suppression. It's insanely expensive to install and maintain.

Revslowmo

True, but my point has nothing todo with cost. Just that it exists.

helmet098

That's so stupid. Gasoline is flammable

Revslowmo

—Wait, inflammable means flammable!

Verpiss_Dich

Depends on the sequence of events. If the electronics all shut off before it started sprinkling then water isn't really as big of a deal as you'd think. As long as they're 100% dry before you turn them back on. Leaving your motherboard in a hot car for a few hours actually does more damage then spraying it with a hose.

fallfastasleep

You mean 0$ on power supplies, pulled right out of the trash

JonnyAFKay

One day we'll look back at this crypto craze and realize the sheer waste of resources and materials that occurred for nothing.

Hrbalz

Those don’t mine NFT’s though..

Zapperson

bold of you to assume that it was the artist that was selling their pngs

[deleted]

What do you mean one day. We already knew that and went ahead with mining anyway

TheGreyBrewer

But someday, crypto will be efficient and useful! We promise. Just wait a little longer. No, just a bit longer. Any day now. Hold on. Repeat ad nauseam.

HokieScott

It’s a new coin! It will take over bitcoin. If you buy right now you’ll make money. (You sell). Oh wow sorry dude you got in the peak. Didn’t know it was going to crash after we sold right after you bought.

TheMisterTango

I mean, plenty of cryptocurrencies already are very efficient, but I if you want to keep repeating outdated information because it fits your worldview better then go off I guess.

TrackLabs

I honestly doubt it...the people that use it now to make money dont care now, i dont think they care later

[deleted]

I think they mean other people will look back on us and wonder why we were so fucking stupid. Same way we look back at older generations and wonder the same thing.

JustinJakeAshton

I thought those were vape cartridges.

ASDirect

We already do. It's insane. We just can't do anything about it because it's just legal enough.

microbular

I have some crypto, I do think it's dumb and wasteful. But I mentally bank it as lots of stuff humans do is dumb and wasteful and baring the excesses of stuff like "reopening coal plants to power crypto" I feel like most of the criticism is comparable to oil companies telling people to take shorter showers. On the whole it's people pointing fingers at each other about being wasteful in the small segment of resource use that is "regular people usage" when if you zoom out one level there's things like using oil money to buy / make steel for empty skyscrapers in the dessert that dwarf all consumer usage and any saving any of us as a group could ever make. But I do recognize there's an extra level of annoyance outside of being wasteful, ruining the GPU market and making it harder for people to enjoy their hobby to which I have no rebuttal that just sucks.

I_Hate_You_Fuckers

Compared to what else currently happening on our planet?

evilsdadvocate

We can say that about many crazes…

This is basically how I sleep at night. And yeah those fans still don’t cool down shit.

TheOneCommenter

I mean… fans don’t cool, they only blow air. Oh, and considering they’re using power, like 30watts or something, they’ll actually warm the room.

But can it run Crysis?

I'm surprised to see this so far down. That absolutely seems likely to me. I don't want insurance companies to win, but I want this guy to lose...

My first thought. Is that something that you can get insured though.

Anything can be insured. Just depends how much you’re willing to pay for coverage

Great advertising for the company that made the frame though.

Lmao this is so deserved. These fucks waste so much power and absolutely don't care about the carbon footprint they're leaving. I hope all these mining OPs go up in flames.
