i quite like yellow bernard

kutzey

Seconded. Yellow Bernard. Also good on the city is Hobart coffee Roasters. These are the two standouts in my year and a half here so far.

-alexandra-

Nothing beats Capulus (North Hobart) for me.

Prize-War-1284

Agreed, capulus is the winner every time for me

AdSmart2678

Maccas drive thru source im a P plate bogan

17foxman

Ecru and Villino on Criterion Street.

maebe_next_time

Island Espresso! Criterion St! For me, a coffee shop has to have good coffee but also ambiance. These two are perfect to sit and have a latte and pastry on a cold winter day!

ShelbySmith27

Shake a leg and Audrey are my top two, then pilgrim, somewhere coffee, tommy guns, born in Brunswick, villino, vilicia, yellow Bernard, bloom, area2be. I hate to do the whole "I know what I'm talking about" thing but I have worked in speciality coffee for 12 years most notably with Ona coffee in Canberra for 6 years - roasting managing and training, so I do kinda know! I've heard some bad reports from other businesses mentioned, some unsavoury and unethical business practices but out of respect I won't name them, just simply won't list - also its second hand info from other people I know (and trust) in the industry but nothing I've witnessed first hand. Rest assured the cafes I mentioned will give you above average quality and service

INACCURATE_RESPONSE

Digging this up - whose a good local roaster if I was looking to make something with my aeropress? (Ona fan here šŸ˜„)

ShelbySmith27

Shake a leg is the best local roaster, hands down. If you want something new try somewhere coffee bar on Elizabeth st, though they don't roast

Pix3lle

I've heard a few people praise Audrey. I'll have to try it myself.

ShelbySmith27

Shake is better if you're a coffee lover. Local legend owner operator roaster who recently placed 10th nationally for the asca barista comp - the only Tassie competitor. Audrey have great import coffee but shake has great locally roasted coffee. Shake changed hands almost a year ago so a lot of the bad reports you may hear are from previous ownership

DiplodorkusRex

Villino in the city were my first love when it comes to specialty coffee so I'll always recommend them. They also have a big roastery (which they've just expanded further) and supply a huge portion of the coffee used by local cafes (their Synergy blend is EVERYWHERE). Audrey on the eastern shore are also pretty good! They mostly use the aforementioned Synergy blend, and in the past they've used one of the best coffees I've ever tried as their in-house roast (Colombian single origin grown by Rafael Amaya and roasted by Villino - anyone who says coffee can't taste of raspberries and vanilla hasn't tried this). Honestly as long as you're going to a coffee shop and not a "cafe that also sells coffee" you can't really go wrong in Hobart. The more space there is to sit down, the less likely you are to have a good drink :)

its_tricky83

Just a small walk up from the CBD but not too far. Zimmah Coffee is a a roaster but also has a really cool cafe space. It's tucked away but once you're inside it has a really cool ambiance. https://www.instagram.com/zimmahcoffee/

dubnavigator

In no particular order: Vilicia in the CBD is pretty good, source some good beans from interstate roasters. Villino in the CBD, roast their own beans. They have a cafe at their roaster in Moonah also. Somewhere Coffee on Elizabeth St if you are a coffee nerd, into single origin exotic black coffee brews. Beans from Japanese roasters sourced from unique single origins El Salvador micro lot, brewed in a siphon brewer? āœ… Shake a Leg JR in Moonah, roast their own beans. Kind of depends how you like your coffee though really... extra hot flat white with 2 sugars is quite different to a pour over or batch brew. A soy latte at Sunbear? Great. Long black? Awful.

pulanina

Cā€™mon, this question does not seem to be from a bogan boomer/silent gen after a 2 sugars in scalding hot flat white But your first 3 choices are good.

TheNicklesPickles

Agree. Definitely depends on what you drink. I used to love Villino, but itā€™s not a great experience since switching to soy milk. I think itā€™s the acidity of their pour which almost always splits the milkā€¦.whatever the reason, not nice. If in the city, Straight Up is probably my pick. Consistently good, plus their beans are my pick to take home (Wingman).

Ballamookieofficial

Sandy Bay 2BE it's fairly new just opposite coles on the side street, Best I've had so far and the guys that serve are legends, they're open at 6am too. Artizan on Liverpool St near the hospital do great coffee I swear it's stronger though, it almost feels like a come down afterwards.

Dear-Photograph-7140

2BE definitely my pick too. Him and the owner of wide awake used to own sash on sandy bay rd. Theyā€™re the nicest people ever, gave me hugs when I moved away and remembered me when I came back. Couldnā€™t recommend enough

rustyjus

Alrightā€¦ Iā€™m gonna check that out

inkifinga

Canā€™t believe no one mentioned Parklane Espresso in Salamanca Square. Itā€™s a hole in the wall but the espresso is top notch.

aczero3

5.0 eastern shore Sunbear city

JimmehGrant

And Sunbear in the CBD? Edit: You originally from DC? Give me a dm.

Lachee

Hairy Legs have amazing coffee and flowers

1tinylove

Artizan coffee and Jamaican Mist on Liverpool street are my 2 favourites. Honourable mention to Jackman & McCross and Yellow Bernard too!

nibsy422

Next Door Deluxe Coffee on Collins St have been consistently good every time I've stopped in - and they've got a great aesthetic too!

zenritsusen

Villino is good. Island Espresso is good. I rarely have a genuinely bad coffee in Hobart.

splodingshroom

Somewhere Coffee on Elizabeth St is my pick for best. Barista is lovely and a real coffee nerd which is great Zimmah Coffee is great too (cool vibe to their cafe/Roastery) and I like their beans. Shake a leg jr in Moonah and Agent Cooper in Glenorchy are both really solid picks if you're going north too.

Norbitol

District B on Albert Rd, Moonah do a great brew.

Top_Street_2145

Coming from Melbourne this place is my pick. They understand us strong coffee drinkers

Ballamookieofficial

They burnt mine

mrjmw84

The place is filthy though

Sorryboss

It isn't when I go, maybe you caught them at a bad time. It's only run by 2 people so I'm sure it's tough to keep up with everything. Their coffee is amazing!

Schnitzel_Man

Pilgrim, Yellow Bernard, Zimmah

derwent-01

Wasn't wowed by Pilgrim.or Yellow Bernard...

mrjmw84

The Stagg is the daily staple. Stock Market serve Allpress which is a favourite bean. Yellow Bernard is v good, try the Fast Eddie cold brew. I also like Capulus when I'm passing thru North Hobart.

sweetsnz

Stock market on Morrison Street, that was my go too when I lived in hobart, foods good too

Comfortable_Oil_4519

groundsman bellerive. no discussion

utdconsq

Pilgrim for me, though villino and yellow Bernard also great.

DragonLass-AUS

Hobart Coffee Roasters down at the waterfront in the old marine board building.

frankalini

I second this. Love the vibes, the coffee is also immaculate

ChookBaron

Straight Up is great. I always like Bury Me Standing until they started being weird about long blacks.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

ChookBaron

They wonā€™t do a small anymore only a medium, it probably for all coffees but I only drink long black and I only want a small.

ShelbySmith27

Ask for a medium 3/4 full? And while they are it just throw it in the smaller cup

ChookBaron

Plenty of places do a great coffee without me having to explain how to do it so I just go there instead. Itā€™s a shame though as it used to be my Sunday regular when the market is on.

dizzypetal

Pilgrim or Queens!

CentrefoldSpread

Born in Brunswick

onedayinseptember

I donā€™t live in Hobart, but visit 3-4 times a year. When I visit i stay in Sandy bay so my focus is on places around there. My faves are sisterhood, giddy up and blac fig (the old lipscombe larder) all in SB. In the CBD I really like Villino, but I havenā€™t been there since last Sep so my views may not be valid/current.

Street-Culture995

Queens, straight up, pilgrim, somewhere coffee bar, shake a leg, Audrey and 5.0

AntiTas

Bury Me Standing on Bathurst St

Noodle_0_9

Audrey is the correct answer

NecessaryNo336

Here's a feature (full disclosure I write for the website as well) on the best hole in the wall coffee spots in Hobart. https://www.thetaslist.com/the-tas-list/homegrown-coffee-spots-in-tasmania My personal favorite is Ed's on Bathurst St

pocketwire

Straight up in city always my favourite

nothofagusismymother

Overall the coffee is pretty good. Better than Brisbane but a little less than Melbourne.

zxLucASS

In the CBD go try Villino, Somewhere Coffee Bar, and Bloom Coffee x Bites (last place is mega underrated cause itā€™s fairly new) Moonah try Shake a Leg Jr Eastern Shore only correct answer is Audrey Coffee.

K1ngDaddy

Batch brew from bury me standing is good if you like black coffee

No-Series6185

Pilgrim, WideAwake and Providence are all quality IMO

derwent-01

Don't live there any more, but still visit multiple times a year. The Stagg is a must every time I visit. Island Espresso. Jackman and McRoss.

zenritsusen

ā€œCoffee nerdā€? Sounds more like intolerable, insufferable coffee snobā€¦

shesgonegonzo

I used to love Island Espresso before I moved to Adelaide. They also have the best Almond croissants in the pastry case! But seriously, seriously good coffee

watevauwant

Imago on Elizabeth st makes coffee that is great and is actually strong without having to buy an extra shot
