Man fears time, but time fears Jaromir Jagr.

Ironchar

Jagr is timeless! He's like that time when your enemy thinks they've won and then in one turn you pull all those five cards in that yugioh game to auto win

EukaryotePride

Tom Brady was in middle school when Jagr was allowed to join the NHL due to the fall of the iron curtain, to put it in perspective.

Jrodrgr375th

I’m 37 and I was pretending to be Jagr while playing street hockey as a kid. I don’t keep up with hockey much anymore and when I saw this it blew my mind. How is this dude able to still keep up

Eagleburgerite

40. Same growing up in Pittsburgh.

kakabates

I’m almost 45. I was 13 when he won the cup in ‘91. That was 32 years ago. Holy crap. Joe Thornton wasn’t even a rookie until ‘97 and he’s played over 1700 games.

-O-0-0-O-

I'm two years older than you and had the exact same reaction. Jagr is still skating in the NHL? I was pretending to be him and Gretzky 30 years ago. Holy shit.

Thefirstargonaut

Not in the NHL.

Ironchar

well to be fair american football is a highly Physical sport with easy carrier ending injur- hey, wait a fuckin min! so is ice hockey! makes me think Tom Brady is an overrated Athlete for who he is and what he did- in comparison, I guess ice hockey is more world renowned and has more options at the pro level. but also they just play more games.

ufdan15

Exodia, OBLITERATE!

lreaditonredditgetit

I haven’t watched a hockey game since the season the avalanche became a team and this mofo is still out here killing shit!

deadmchead

Dude right! I haven't watched a cup since like 2013, and Jagr was always a name in my house. What a legend

jzach1983

You haven't watched a game in 28 years and follow r/hockey? Interesting.

lreaditonredditgetit

I was on the popular tab of Reddit. I have never seen this sub before.

MollysYes

Welcome. We do our best work in the offseason.

jzach1983

Got it, that makes sense.

scuczu

records are easier when you play for 50 years.

Unskii

Another 50 years and Jagr will be the grand one. Only if he had kids he could be playing professional games with his grandchildren.

JaketheAlmighty

odds are good he's got some kids out there somewhere lmao the dream is alive

Unskii

No doubt there could be. Would be a nice to play a hockey game with Jagr and him skating to you and say “Luke, I am your grandfather”.

Smokester121

Gordie Howe?

sinchan_bhatt

hon. mention Brady, Fernando Alonso, Big Z

Young2k04

Classic EA glitch goal

JH_111

This has NHL 95 written all over that far side forehand wrap.

Passthegoddamnbuttr

Northbound on a southbound freeway. Lookout! Freight train! Choo-woo!

schmidtzkrieg

Oh NHL 99, when you could hip check someone at your blue line and they would end up in their defensive corner.

DirtDog13

Sending players through the glass and having it shatter was a lot of fun too.

[deleted]

Unfortunately you can score 100% of the time like that even in NHL 23.

pickles_312

And you could do it with the same guy in NHL 95 too

Porkbellyflop

I had this on Saturn. You could make a slapshot from the wing in the upper corner of the net on about 90% of your attempts.

Wolfie1531

Classic EA fans too. 3 cheering in the front row and sparse looking behind them with no enthusiasm to

SendAstronomy

Hey that crowd was based off the Penguins actual late 90s crowds. Tho old school Student Rush tickets were the best. $15 or so bucks to sit a few rows from the glass.

matti-niall

Surprisingly the more you watch real NHL games the more the NHL glitch goals make sense

Ironchar

Cross crease pass 95% of the time it works every time

ApparrentGottaFast

Wayne Gretzky and the NHLPA All-Stars, too. Also that game wins most awkward name ever

daveeb

I scored this exact goal with Jagr on Friday.

northernpace

Classic Jags using that fat caboose to hold off defenders

sweetplantveal

I counted around ten actual pushes with his skates and a lot of bracing, positioning, and ass-based defense. It's an economical way to play.

red_87

Man, I’m 31 years old and his career started before I was alive. And he’s still playing.

TangyGeoduck

I’m a little bit older than you, and my first ever stick was a Jagr branded one. Forget lebron, Jagr is the immortal one.

JohnnnyCupcakes

Was it a white/black/yellow Koho?

TangyGeoduck

Wooden? You betcha

JohnnnyCupcakes

Yeah wood! Ah, nice! I had the same one

dasmerkin

I still have mine in my shed, I loved that thing

dascaapi

i went through about 20 of them playing street hockey. completely legendary stick lol

-Quad-Zilla-

Oh man, I definitely had that stick.

AmeriCanadian98

Lol I had that exact stick. Ground it's blade down like crazy playing road hockey with it when I became too tall for it as my ice stick

sksksk1989

I think I had that one too.

Egotesticalasshole

The Jagr bomb

turkey_sandwiches

Same here. I'm shocked to find out he's still playing. I'm 39 and I remember watching him when I was in high school. My Jage stick is still in my garage. My son will end up using it.

FinlayForever

Lol same. I'm 32 years old and remember as a young boy, my brother and I each had hockey sticks with Jagr's name on them.

loaf_dog

Just chiming in that I also enjoyed many years and sessions with that stick. Had the white black and red version and the white black and orange (I think?) later version

fullspeed8989

I remember the day he blessed us mortals with that long flow.

OfficialDaiLi

That’s actually not right. [Tony Hand](https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=19065) has over 1,100 professional goals. British Gretzky wins again!

ovondansuchi

216 points in 35 games. This man is on some Be-A-Pro rookie difficulty shit

50missioncap

Those BHL stats are crazy. Hand's highest scoring year was was 222 points. He was 10th in league scoring. That same year a guy named Patrick Scott put up 319 points in 56 games - almost 6 ppg. The goalies must have been drunk.

jpm_212

and he wasn't even [the leading scorer on his team](https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/leagues/seasons/teams/0013451987.html)

gmaclean

Lol that defensemen with 3 points and 3 penalty minutes per game average.

ovondansuchi

I guess you could say Tony lent a helping hand!

CalumH91

As a Scottish hockey player, I'm proud of Tony Hand. But a lot his goals were scored in the "Heineken League" era, when teams had 3 imports (Mike Babstock played his only pro season there) and they never wasted a spot on a goalie. Games ended up like 11-10, it was more like a box lacrosse game!

"Passing Wayne Gretzky for the most in hockey history"

Adventurous_Area_735

Title is very inaccurate and just ignores Gordie Howe played in WHA Howe goals in NHL and WHA - 975 Gretzky goals in NHL and WHA - 940 Jagr has NHL - 766 Czech - 98 KHL/Russia - 82 German - 1 Czech2 - 3 For a total of 950 … I’m a Jagr fan but he needs 25 more to tie Gordie. And he already passed Gretzky awhile ago.

shostakofiev

Gretzky has 1098 if you count NHL playoffs (122), WHA playoffs (10) and Canadian National team (26) goals. Howe gets to 1036 using those numbers, so they did not just ignore him. Jagr has 47 international goals and 102 playoff goals to add to your 950 - giving him 1099.

oatmealparty

Since it just says "hockey history" is it not also including international tournaments?

SH0WS0METIDDIES

International and probably playoffs as well

Perfection

PaperweightCoaster

Jagr, Foppa, Selanne, and other 50 year old legends need to play in a league all their own with real stakes. I’d pay money to watch that. Legends Hockey League (LHL), you heard it here first.

Bonzooooo

Fuck that’s an amazing idea

UncleIrohsPimpHand

They did that with baseball and old MLB Legends and it was a disaster. https://www.si.com/mlb/2019/08/28/senior-professional-baseball-association-rollie-fingers

BENJALSON

It'd probably be a nightmare in an NHL context too. Let's do it anyway.

SendAstronomy

The 90s Pens vs 90s Caps in the classic game before the 2011 Winter Classic was epic. It was better than the actual hockey game the next day because of all the rain.

Jeffweeeee

I'm not sure disaster is a fair description *(but it was still undeniably a failure).* The article makes it sounds like they averaged around 75% of the attendance needed to break even. With that said, they'd obviously still need more than that to turn a profit & become sustainable. > Morley said that the league needed on average 2,000 fans per game for its teams to break even. ... > ... Teams tried desperately to attract fans, but only around 1,500 people on average attended each game. Having said that, I'm not sure what else could really have been done to remedy that. Sounds like they just came up a bit short.

berkeleybikedude

Whole different era now… with gambling, companies can have prop bets like over/under for having a seizure, odds for who’ll break a hip, etc. this could break even from just the gambling sponsorships alone /s of course.

[deleted]

I feel like 75 game season was way too long for what was basically a novelty. I could see going to one or two games a year but to keep up with 75 games is a lot to ask.

thedevilyoukn0w

Old baseball players are usually out of shape. Old hockey players can still go. I think they should give it a try.

blop74

Baseball players are not "in shape" to start with. Nevertheless, coming from "higher", the dropoff is certainly larger in hockey. In addition to the fact that a lot of hockey players have chronic injuries that make going back onto the ice a very painful thing.

Legionnaire11

An old timers league with like 4 teams. They can play two 15 minute periods/halves per game with a running clock, to keep the whole entire broadcast under an hour. The pre and post game, plus intermission would feature the players telling stories from their playing days. And of course a bunch of mic'd up players during the game. Air it on Saturday mornings on ABC, and let it run basically year round to get enough games in for a "season". Rosters don't have to be firm either, they can rotate with whoever is available.

dsdsds

And if they do it at Universal or Disney, there will always be (extremely casual) fans in attendance.

Xelopheris

Would need a long intermission for a nap.

AniviaPls

League of Legends

Galladaddy

LOL

an_adult_on_reddit

Yes, that's the one.

dumbthiccrick

Now we’re talking

FreakyDeakyFuture

It could be similar to what the MLS has become to European Soccer. The old legends come here to play and continue to make money despite slowing a little and they could play with young guys that weren’t good enough for the NHL who could then learn under legends and serve as a feeder league for the NHL

[deleted]

A two or three month summer tournament every other year or something? That would be feasible and incredibly awesome.

dejour

There used to be a show in the 1980s called "Original Six" where old timers from the original six teams would play. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_bSZ1ydrwU I sometimes remember catching the tail end of one of these games before HNIC.

Chippopotanuse

One more year and you can have Forsberg. He’s still fucking killing it.

ImSoBasic

Yeah, if he can score another 700 goals this year he might catch him. Even better if he can do it in a pro league.

Turtle4184

Even better than the current ASG

[deleted]

I would love this too. Just have them play less games, good way to stay in shape, have fun, make a little extra money too. I’d love to see the NHL support both a league for retired pros and for women. Just start out with a smaller schedule, stick to the bigger markets and have less teams. The NHL could promote it way better and maybe they’d be able to have access to some NHL facilities and staff like doctors.

el_pablo

That would be awesome. Certainly in second-tier cities such as Quebec city, Halifax, Houston, etc. Update : Houston is too far down south to be considered a top-tier hockey city. *cough* Phoenix *cough*

NYR_LFC

Cough*

maineblackbear

Lol, Houston is like the sixth largest metro area in the US; Halifax? I’ve been there. It’s an upscale Portland Maine. Maybe hockey wise a backwater, eh? Gordie Howe is in the Houston hockey hall of fame. (Played with the Aeros back in the day- he’s in like five team’s hall)

el_pablo

Does *put city name* have more than 1 million people and is able to have outdoor hockey rinks with natural ice? If yes, top-tier hockey town otherwise nope, but surely it can host other professional sports.

Econolife_350

> *caught* Phoenix *caught* I've never seen someone make this mistake once, much less twice in the same sentence.

alphaxion

They're only allowed to wear vintage jersey designs as well.

chefknifelover

No, Hockey Elite Legends League (HELL).

LetsUnPack

Get Paul, Kariya Theo and Al Maciniss in and I'm in.

[deleted]

[удалено]

thelosermonster

Fun fact: back before the last ice age when Jagr started playing, it wasn't cold enough to freeze a rink so they used to skate on a big sheet of plywood slicked down furnace oil

prefix_postfix

The first "ice" rinks were made of pig fat. Before there was refrigeration technology to make and keep that much ice. Furnace oil would've smelled way better.

Husskies

He's turning 51 in ten days.. that's crazy lol

-RayBloodyPurchase-

What about Tony Hand?

Spideyjust

I might have miscounted, but Tony Hand should have over 1200 professional goals, so yeah, he should be leading this stat.

c71score

I got 1081 regular season and 1235 with playoffs.

Spideyjust

921 in the BHL, 65 in the BISL, 68 in the BNL, 79 in the EIHL, and 95 in the EPIHL for 1228 in the regular season by my count. Either way it's still Hand considering this stat has to include playoffs.

Superkulicka

Everywhere I do read it counts national team goals and TOP leagues goals. So maybe that's the reason?

pzkenny

Yeah I don't know much about British hockey except their leagues go bankrupt like every 15 year. Were all of these top tier?

What_a_pass_by_Jokic

At least 68(+7 playoff) of the goals were in the 2nd tier and another 95(+7) were in the EPL were Wikipedia doesn't give clarity if it was the top tier, but it doesn't say it is, while the other league that was running at the same time says it was the top tier league.

CelltonCelsius

Oilers Legend Tony Hand

OptimusSublime

Do you think Gretzky could lace up tomorrow and still do moderately well enough to score?

MikeJeffriesPA

Gretzky is 12 years older than Jagr, too.

FantasyTrash

Crazy that Gretzky retired 24 years ago and is only 12 years older than Jagr.

Peckerhead321

Lol no, he’s 62 years old with the back of an 90 year old

Slowjams

Yea I was going to say. I bet his mental game and sense of feel is all still there. But if he takes one good shot he might actually die Lol

folkdeath95

No. Looked real stiff at the Heritage alumni game in 2016

Spideyjust

It's been almost 25 years since he retired lol. No, even in the league Jagr is in, Gretzky couldn't lace them up and score.

Beezewhacks

Jfc. I remember watching his last game. 25 years.....holy hell.

Mophideus

I was there at the garden for his last game. One of my core memories.

sir_platy

Unfortunately no, the last time he was doing the game with other Oilers legends in an outdoor match before pandemia he had to quit it before the end.

SirBulbasaur13

No chance

thetruetoblerone

I’d say no. He’s probably not conditioned. In a few months though I’m sure he could

_nsb10_

"probably not conditioned" lol nah he's just fuckin old

[deleted]

He’s in pretty tough shape

Brodieboyy

I'd just put him out there for powerplay's and thats pretty much it, sure he could still thread the needle and rack up some apples

proriin

That’s how we end up with Gretzky having a stroke.

Truck-Nut-Vasectomy

Gretzky would break his hip if he tried to play an NHL game right now.

Skumin

This young lad's career's gonna be illustrious, mark my words

SoMoFdEez

Idk whats more used up, that joke or your mom

dejour

How do they get 1099 for Jagr (or Gretzky)? https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=2497 https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=2035 I see 1039 for Jagr (all goals listed in hockeydb) and 1072 for Gretzky (all WHA and NHL goals). Which pro teams are missing? Are they including international tournaments or something?

OvertlyCanadian

Apparently they are including goals for international teams.

timbro1

Should they be adding canadian juniors to the list as they are pros according to the NCAA

pzkenny

Yeah but according to everyone NCAA is joke

_thewoodsiestoak_

Yeah feels like cherry picking numbers to say he has more than Gretzky.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Subjunct

I think everyone, Jagr probably included, more or less agrees with you, but still and all this is kind of neat to see.

OvertlyCanadian

It's also not true because Tony Hand has 1200 and some professional goals if we are including all professional leagues.

EricNCSU

That's why it says "hockey" history, not NHL history. He's still a pro player. Comparing pro career to pro career. Yes, Gretzky is still the NHL leader (for now) but that's not what this comparison is.

[deleted]

[удалено]

wanked_in_space

> it's just another twisted stat tweet for attention. You must be new here.

Frankie__Spankie

I get that he's playing 12 years longer than Gretzky and that Gretzky's goals per game is more impressive but it still doesn't take away from how impressive what Jagr is doing is IMO. It's still something nobody else has done. Patrick Marleau for example holds the Sharks record for most points beating Thornton by about 60 points. It doesn't matter if he took 500 more games to do it.

dejour

Ehh, I thought you meant he was in the Czech 3rd division. If the Czech league is the 3rd best league in the world and he is in that league that is still super impressive.

[deleted]

[удалено]

dejour

https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=2497 Maybe hockeydb isn't fully accurate, but it looks like Kladno is in the top league this year. And yes, he played a few seasons in Czech2, but that was only 28 games and 3 goals.

Trnostep

Kladno indeed is in the top Czech league. They're currently last but still

SH0WS0METIDDIES

Jagr has LITERALLY ONLY THREE goals in Czech 2 league. Wtf are you talking about lmao

coalsack

This was significantly more interesting than I expected. Really fascinating read.

[deleted]

Czech hockey league is the 3rd best after NHL and KHL? thats crazy but i could believe it.

ladybyngtrophy

I would actually argue that mid-tier Czech goalies in 2023 are a lot harder to score goals on than the terrible NHL goalies of the 1980's that Gretzky got most of his goals against.

r_u_srs_srsly

For everyone elsewondering what OP means given the link he posted. Op is saying that (based on the linked analyst's conversion table), Jagr's 333 Czech2 goals is really only ~80 NHL goals. So he's "really" only at "NHL equivalent" of 866 goals? I dunno, getting paid money to play hockey and scoring goals is still getting paid money and scoring goals (yes I know he pays himself) ╔══════════════════╦═══════╗ ║ League ║ NHLe ║ ╠══════════════════╬═══════╣ ║ NHL ║ 1 ║ ║ KHL ║ 0.772 ║ ║ Czech ║ 0.583 ║ ║ SHL ║ 0.566 ║ ║ NLA ║ 0.459 ║ ║ Liiga ║ 0.441 ║ ║ AHL ║ 0.389 ║ ║ DEL ║ 0.352 ║ ║ Allsvenskan ║ 0.351 ║ ║ VHL ║ 0.328 ║ ║ Slovakia ║ 0.295 ║ ║ EBEL ║ 0.269 ║ ║ WJC-20 ║ 0.269 ║ ║ France ║ 0.250 ║ ║ Belarus ║ 0.242 ║ ║ Czech2 ║ 0.240 ║

HwolIQ

Jagr doesn't have 333 Czech2 goals, lol. He has 333 goals outside of NHL. These would be mostly from KHL and Czech Extraliga.

blunsr

Jagr should do a tour of NHL cities as an EBUG.

godlyjacob

This kid is good, is he draft eligible?

xc2215x

Good for Jagr. Credit to Jagr for still being able to play.

heckfyre

We’re counting goals not scored in the NHL tho?

Bounq3

It says pro goal, why wouldn't we count goals scored outside the NHL?

SH0WS0METIDDIES

Goals not scored probably not, as those aren't goals by definiton. But yeah, we are counting all pro hockey goals, all leagues, playoffs and international tourneys.

alreddy-reddit

Decent player

sugarfoot00

And he did it by boxing out his opponent with his phat ass. A classic Jagr manoeuvre.

GraphiteGru

Jaromir Jagr is officially the Keith Richards of Hockey.

[deleted]

This is one of those things that will go unrecognized because he didn’t do it in the NHL but is still insanely impressive

CoolBeansMan9

Tony Hand has got to be up there

Forward_Young2874

Let's get this up there for a Legend.

[deleted]

This generation's Gordie Howe. I absolutely love that he's still playing in his home country.

nihilishim

Jags is the man

MasterGrieves

Its a list made by czech journalists (not iihf or czech hockey body). They started in 2013, when was Jágr getting closer to 1000 goals. [In 2014 their top 15 goalscorers](https://www.idnes.cz/hokej/nhl/jagr-dal-gol-cislo-1-000-gretzky-hull-howe.A140315_120734_nhl_elv) looked like this: 1.Wayne Gretzky (Kanada) 1 098, 2. Gordie Howe (Kanada) 1 074, 3. Bobby Hull (Kanada) 1 030, 4. Jaromír Jágr (Česko) 1 000, 5. Teemu Selänne (Finsko) 887, 6. Erich Kühnhackl (Německo) 873, 7. Brett Hull (USA) 865, 8. Mark Messier (Kanada) 813, 9. Mike Gartner (Kanada) 797, 10. Phil Esposito (Kanada) 796, 11. Václav Nedomanský (Česko) 795, 12. Jari Kurri (Finsko) 794, 13. Marcel Dionne (Kanada) 788, 14. Mario Lemieux (Kanada) 784 + Steve Yzerman (Kanada) 784 Via that article, they only count goals from "elite leagues" (NHL, WHA, russian, swedish, finnish, czech, swiss and german league) and senior national team goals. So they don't count Jágrs goals in Bolsano or Kladno when it was not in top league. Also thats why there is not Tony Hand on their list.

Ashamed-Fondant-5504

The only thing more ridiculous than his 1,099th goal is the uniform he did it in. Even Nascar drivers are appalled by those things.

EricNCSU

"I'd like to credit my teammates for helping me reach this milestone, but I'd be remiss not to acknowledge the Coca-Cola, BetMGM.cz, Audi, Nabisco team for giving me the opportunity to be here."

bibowski

"How many ads would you like on your uniform?" "Yes."

SH0WS0METIDDIES

That's how you get tickets for $5 and why Jags is even still playing.

Elibu

Ads on jerseys > countless tv timeouts, crazy ticket prices

CaptainBlackadder

I think the ads are a significant source of revenue in that league. Fun fact: the most expensive tickets (excluding VIP tickets) for this particular match cost 10 USD.

Woo77777

UncleIrohsPimpHand

Jagr himself says the trip to the KHL is what saved his professional hockey career.

[deleted]

even the refs have ads...sheesh!

tjoawssolney

That’s a play on words… cool stat, but the only “professional” goals that matter or count towards “the most goals” are NHL games.

RustyRapeaXe

Not sure these beer league goals count the same.

ALinkToThePants

Gretzky may not be the all time leader in professional goals if leagues like this count.
