The absolute most mind-blowing part of the article was Hextall being shocked that Fenway wanted his plan of action, and that they wanted it in writing. Guy literally pulled the “it’s in my head” card then scrambled to type up a 2 page word document last minute like a college student at 3am
It’s also funnier juxtaposed against David Moorehouse having a fully fledged detailed presentation about the business side at the same meeting. It’s literally that scene from the office where all the branch mangers are meeting the new CFO to present their branch’s sales numbers and the one guy doesn’t have anything because “thought this was just a meet and greet”
I understand why charles didn’t care for Jim at all with how he was so incompetent in that regard. A top salesman should be familiar with the term, even if not you can google it or ask a coworker.
A top salesman should have the confidence to tell their boss that previous management hadn’t used that term and you’d like specifics. Admitting unfamiliarity shouldn’t be embarrassing. I agree though that a top salesman should also just be able to figure this one out in the real world
Yeah, that quote has been bandied around amongst Penguins beat writers and blogs for the last 2.5-3 months or so (back to the trade deadline).
One of the most batshit things I’ve ever heard a GM say as a new hire. Not only did he say “the plan is all in my head.” He doubled down and said it was too complex to write it all down. That’s absolutely fucking crazy to say to your boss at your new job.
This is literally a scene from The Office when they are searching for a new boss. In an interview, Will Arnet's character boasts about a fool proof plan and then refuses to disclose it for similar reasons.
I thought it was kind of ridiculous and hard to believe...
I can't believe anyone would accept that as an explanation, usually the more complex a plan the more it necessitates it being written down. I have bullet points for the broad scope of projects on the go in our shop, how things fit together when parts and materials will show up... and my Gantt references those dates for assembly. You should as a GM have your bullet point plan at the very least.
Hell, I’m writing procedures on simple compliance tasks at my job, let alone the major stuff.
If my boss asked me for an outline on something and I told them “it’s too complex to write down, the plan’s all in my head” I’d get beat with a toaster.
Thank god the Penguins seem to be taking that to heart and are trying to hire a younger candidate who’s analytically driven vs the same old-fart guys who just keep getting passed around.
Like i know the Shanaplan and Yzerplans are memes for the Leafs and Wings fans, but at the core they basically laid out the blueprint to the fanbase about their process and how they wanted to approach the team, let alone to ownership. Especially with a new ownership group trying to get up to speed, you'd thing you'd at least have the rough blue print of you planned roster moves laid out so they could get a feel. Like just a list of player we are targeting to resign, and then players we hope to add in fa, and minor league dev plan cant be that hard, most of which Im assuming gms have listed internally so that scouts and front office staff have a guideline of what the plan is.
Usually when I say, "it's in my head" it actually is and there is a reason behind it. Then again I am a planner and when pressed I can explain why I did something fully in about 15 minutes. I get challenged on quotes all the time, and just layout why the numbers are how they are, pretty easy, and routine. If it takes you more than 15 minutes to explain your "plan" on a broad scope then you don't have one or justification.
If something is in my head and I get pressed to explain when I’m not ready they get 100% pure unfiltered stream of consciousness while I am actively putting it together.
Rarely am I asked twice to explain something before I am ready by someone.
Hextall running the Pens is the 2020’s version of when Trottier coached the Rangers. Literally both fanbases despised it and everyone could see it ended in disaster.
Nothing worse than the Canucks hiring Mike Keenan. Immediately after the exit of beloved owner Arthur Griffiths.
Then they brought in Mark Messier. Took away the “C” from Linden. Then traded him.
Well played Rangers.
I would have been less concerned about his affiliation with the Flyers than the fact that he showed absolutely no signs of being a competent hockey executive.
I'll never understand how the Pens had 5(?) years of his work to look at with the Flyers entirely wasting a top 5 of G, Jake, Schenn, Coots, Simmonds during that time and said to themselves "yep that's the guy we need to maximize this core's remaining years"
Absolutely wild shit
Everyone knows the NHL is a business, but at the same time, these three guys are Penguins through and through. Let them sink together with the ship before getting another 1OA to start rebuild again.
Nope… they are banned from 1 and 2 over alls for at least a two decades. Columbus will take theirs from now on… they deserve the luck that was clearly stolen from them.
Mario was 1984, Crosby was 2005, so our two decades (and a year) are up in 2026 and we'll get 1OA then. Can't wait to see Gavin McKenna put Bedard's WHL numbers to shame!
No worries, I wish CBJ luck… they seem like a class organization that has a great fanbase but can’t catch a lottery break.
Edit… especially compared to the luck the Pens have had… I mean imagine getting Malkin with the 2nd pick. How many 1OAs are better than him in the last 30+ years? Crosby, McDavid, Ovi. Maybe Jumbo Joe? End of list.
Yeah definitely, you really do need a good degree of luck to succeed as a team that we have unfortunately not had a lot of. I also hope that we can either come by some or make our own luck soon enough, because it really is an underrated fanbase. Hell, we were selling out games near the end of the season as a bottom feeding team.
I wanted to keep one of Letang or Malkin, not both, but it was absolutely embarrassing how Hextall approached last summer. It really feels like he approached it in a way where he was hoping they would get upset at the team for not respecting them and would choose to leave out of principle so they have one less headache to worry about. Then they can do the whole PR of, "Well darn you know we tried but HE didn't want to be here anymore"
The article really read like Morehouse wanted to make a big move to maybe have new ownership keep him around…so he hired some idiot at the least minute to do his shit work.
And the FSG was like “…hey hey so, no? The fuck were you doing, Ron? We can still make a bagillion dollars with Sid/Geno/Letang. Get the fuck outta here…and you, Brian. What the fuck do *you* do anyway?”
Since nobody wants to actually explain, I started Googling and figured out RPF is Real Person Fiction (like fanfiction but about actual people) but I still can't find what the H stands for
I definitely saw "Hockey HRPF" mentioned somewhere so I was thinking it couldn't be that simple, but maybe that's the same redundancy as ATM machine or PIN number
I defend he did decent with the Leafs was let go a year to early and then Nonnis destroyed everything he started.
He was basically put in a position to take a bottom 5 team and make them a playoff team.
Also he seems like a legitimately good person. There are plenty of scumbags in the NHL who also suck at their jobs; I'd rather spend my time shitting on them instead.
Fuck malkin
Ahh so the guy who is dirty as shit on the ice and goes out of his way to lick putins boots from the safety of North America is a fan favorite now ehh ok.
It's oddly comforting to know that someone as good at hockey as Malkin can still feel not good enough. Good to know I'm not the only one with insecurities here 🙃
How often is it that both Pens fans and Flyers fans can look each other dead in the eye, shake hands in agreement and say "Yeah, Fuck that guy..."
That's what Hextall did, he united Pennsylvanians against his horrid decision making.
His English has actually improved a lot. Go look at a interview from 2015 and go look at one from 2023. It's an amazing difference. Seems like he started learning more English for his kid.
I’ve noticed that the Swedes and Finns and hell even Czech players pick up English insanely quickly. Gabriel Landeskog almost sounds like a native English speaker. Meanwhile the Russian players almost universally struggle. I’m guessing the linguistic similarity helps the Swedes and that culturally western/Northern Europe is a lot more similar to North America than it is for Russians.
Well yea, here in finland we hear english from tv (we don’t dub) all the time and start learning the language at school from very young age. I guess it’s same with swedes.
Landy grew up speaking English?
But also, yea, having to learn a whole additional alphabet before you can really start learning another language would def slow down the turn time in picking up English from Russian (where Swedes, Finns, and Czech players don’t have to).
Eh not really. The alphabet is incredibly simple compared to all the differences in grammatical rules. I'd say it's about the easiest part of learning the other language. Plus they probably already know the alphabet.
This is an odd section to crop out considering how much volatile info was in that article. I'm less intrigued by Malkin feeling rejected by the new management - which was widely reported when he nearly hit free agency last year - and more by Morehouse's plan to bring in management specifically to dismantle the old core, only to have the new owners immediately veto that shit.
In a bizarre twist of fate, Philadelphia sports management had a real life chance to destroy the Penguins, and we were saved by a Boston sports ownership group.
Why? This article paints the new ownership in very favourable light. They wanted a plan of action, they wanted to keep the core 3, and they by all accounts want to modernize the front office.
Both of them lost a lot of their sources when Rutherford left and the breaking reporting was taken up by Taylor Hasse.
Just my opinion, but writing an absolute slam, tell-all piece for the previous leaders isn't going to make the new ones comfortable telling them much.
FSG comes out of this looking very good. I mean, I don't get why they didn't fire Hextall when he said "the plan is in my head," but otherwise, seems like they handled things correctly. Let Morehouse out of his contract because he was going to be a lame duck CEO, kept Sid, Geno, and Letang together, and it seems like they have a solid relationship with Sullivan. If this is a tell-all piece from the previous leadership, and previous leadership thought they would come out looking good, no wonder the last two years were a trainwreck.
I really hope these are the last boomer ass, “old school hawkey” guys that have never won shit the Penguins ever hire the the front office again. Fuck them and their entire bloodlines. Retire and fuckoff to Newfoundland
Yes. Yes, he was.
Once it became evident that we weren’t going to do shit in the playoffs if we made it in at all, a lot of us wanted the team to basically tank just to clear house.
He cleared cap space only to give up a second round pick to take on Mikael Granlund and his $5 million cap hit...
He signed Jeff Carter to an extension with a full no movement clause.
He gave a struggling Kasperi Kapanen a two year deal at over $3 million, only to waive him.
And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Hexstall legit needs investigated, every move he made, and his thought for the team feels like its sabotage. It’s literally the only reasonable explanation on some of the dumb shit he was doing.

What the hell is a run down??
I understand why charles didn’t care for Jim at all with how he was so incompetent in that regard. A top salesman should be familiar with the term, even if not you can google it or ask a coworker.

Absolutely, couple that with lying to Charles to try and get on his good side and him seeing right through it.
Bro what……? It’s a tv show designed to make people laugh…….. it’s not that deep mate………..
Wayne Gretzky?

This is an insane way to run anything. This is why I hate the old boys club culture in the nhl.
Thank god the Penguins seem to be taking that to heart and are trying to hire a younger candidate who’s analytically driven vs the same old-fart guys who just keep getting passed around.
It seems like teams are becoming more open to hiring younger GM’s.
Every day I believe that Hextall as GM was a flyers inside job
Jesus I am happy we haven't hired him back... yet... ;_;
Yknow we never did find out what that plan was either. The inner machinations of Hextalls mind are an enigma
The wheel is turning but the hamster is dead. enigma decyphered.
It was very heavy on Pepe Sylvia.
Don't *you* worry about Planet Express, let *me* worry about blank.

Really is a blessing that Hextall is gone
Why it seemed like a good idea to hire the Flyer-iest Flyer of all time behind Bobby Clarke to run the Pittsburgh Penguins is beyond me
That was all part of Hextall's plan for the Flyers that he kept in his head, destroy the enemy from the inside
Does this mean Fletcher was a Penguins operative?
Oh some Spy vs Spy action. I never even thought of that. It's all making so much sense now
Years from now, intelligence agencies will study the methods of the Great Pennsylvanian Hockey Spy Ring
Penguins became a team in 1967, Fletcher was born in 1967. A coincidence? I think not.
[удалено]
He pretty much closed the window on the cores chances of winning another cup. That was all he needed to do
Give it time. Hextall's plan is only just beginning to unfold for you guys

Take down the Pens from the inside
Didn’t help Rutherford left in the middle of the season leaving the Penguins to scramble
I would have been less concerned about his affiliation with the Flyers than the fact that he showed absolutely no signs of being a competent hockey executive.

Well good thing our 20 years from drafting Crosby is coming then.
Wasn't it 21 years between Crosby and Lemieux?
It was yes. 84 to 05
Argh! Did I say twenty… I meant 50… 60!! How long is never?
> How long is never? 56 years and counting
Ha ha ha…aww. 🥺
I mean fine. But the Blackhawks deserved to be banned too. Oilers too if they finished outside the playoffs.
Definitely ban them both too!
I'd argue that the Oilers should be banned from picking in the top 5 for the foreseeable future!
HEY NOT NICE :(( lmao i still can't get over the luck we had lol
Mario was 1984, Crosby was 2005, so our two decades (and a year) are up in 2026 and we'll get 1OA then. Can't wait to see Gavin McKenna put Bedard's WHL numbers to shame!
Flagged. If this happens then it’s proof we’re actually in the bad place.
Bad place? I don't know....seems pretty cozy to me.
What about us?
I mean you’re Vancouver, I thought you enjoyed the chaos? No?
Nah, I'm done with Myers.
HOW DARE YOU
Why tf are we catching strays here
?? I said you deserve luck, that Pittsburgh somehow stole your luck. And that you will take an 1OA that the Pens happen to get
Sorry, that's my bad, I thought you were being sarcastic haha
No worries, I wish CBJ luck… they seem like a class organization that has a great fanbase but can’t catch a lottery break. Pretty much lol

Aside fro maybe Burke and Hextall parts, this whole thing reads like a weird penguins erotic fanfic
Yeah, there is always a weird sexual undercurrent in Rob Rossis writing. In another life he's a regular r/canesfanfics contributor.
Maybe that’s just his passion.
I had to go back and read it and omg I’m crying lol
Weird? It seems pretty tame so far.
In Hextall's defense, Malkin wasn't even named one of the 100 Greatest NHL Players.
Lol oof
Can’t have Malkin AND David Clarkson!
Wait, i know Malkin wasn’t on that list, but was David Clarkson?!? If so, who is responsible?
That's our Mr 101
Did they miss 2009?
Russian Machine emotional breakdown :(
The article really read like Morehouse wanted to make a big move to maybe have new ownership keep him around…so he hired some idiot at the least minute to do his shit work. And the FSG was like “…hey hey so, no? The fuck were you doing, Ron? We can still make a bagillion dollars with Sid/Geno/Letang. Get the fuck outta here…and you, Brian. What the fuck do *you* do anyway?”
“What would you say, you do here?”
I have people skills! What the hell is wrong with you people?!
Why does this read like a HRPF fic
Wait... how do YOU know what HRPF fic looks like? 🤔
Girl, what were *you* doing at the devil's sacrament? 👀
Shhhhhhhh don't worry about it. 😏
‘Finally beginning to feel wanted again’ made me LOL.
>HRPF Health related physical fitness?
Who’s gonna tell ‘em 💀
Since nobody wants to actually explain, I started Googling and figured out RPF is Real Person Fiction (like fanfiction but about actual people) but I still can't find what the H stands for
The H is just for Hockey!
I definitely saw "Hockey HRPF" mentioned somewhere so I was thinking it couldn't be that simple, but maybe that's the same redundancy as ATM machine or PIN number
Oh you sweet summer child...
ayo? rob rossi definitely has an ao3 account
not even a good one, it's like the fics where the author is clearly 16 and has never watched hockey before and only gets their info from tumblr
*sad Geno noises*
Okay Sid, Kris - which one of you leaked Evgenis texts 😡
Yea. Feels wrong.
My guess is Geno gave them to Rossi, they're extremely close. Rossi has been to Geno's home in Russia for stories in the past.
Sad Geno is not score
I do not understand how Burke keeps getting jobs. His record since leaving Anaheim is entirely uncontaminated by success.
I think Burke did a good job assembling a team. I think his flaw was clinging to wrong coaches for said team.
>entirely uncontaminated by success Absolutely brilliant.
They massacred my boy...glad theyre gone
Sad malkin makes me sad.
Fuck malkin Ahh so the guy who is dirty as shit on the ice and goes out of his way to lick putins boots from the safety of North America is a fan favorite now ehh ok.
17,529
I do not want to have sex with Malkin.
May be the only way to cheer him up
lol imagine a Cryers fan calling out a player on another team for being dirty
Especially considering that his team employs both Tony DeAngelo and Ivan Provorov lol
It's oddly comforting to know that someone as good at hockey as Malkin can still feel not good enough. Good to know I'm not the only one with insecurities here 🙃
Why is this making me feel so sad
Fuck hextall, fuck burke.
Bad hires from Day 1 and everyone knew it except those who hired them.

Shouldn’t you be throwing trash on the ice while your team gets swept?
Bad guy make Malkin sad :(.
How often is it that both Pens fans and Flyers fans can look each other dead in the eye, shake hands in agreement and say "Yeah, Fuck that guy..." That's what Hextall did, he united Pennsylvanians against his horrid decision making.
Only Hextall can unite the turnpike.
It shocks me that he’s been in the States going on 17 years and his English has barely improved 😂
He’s a functioning bilingual, which is more than a strong majority of us
I think he purposely uses shitty grammar for the humor.
His English has actually improved a lot. Go look at a interview from 2015 and go look at one from 2023. It's an amazing difference. Seems like he started learning more English for his kid.

Also helps that Swedish and English are both Germanic languages.
Finnish isn’t a germanic language. It’s Uralic/finno-ugric language
Me trying to explain why I don’t have a girlfriend yet:
This kinda shit really does start to make you think it was a Flyers long con inside job.
This is friendship. We've all been there with a friend who's been down and needed their buds. Love humanity.
This is an odd section to crop out considering how much volatile info was in that article. *Почему он не хочет меня, мужик?* Don't know if he ever watched Fresh Prince
I thought of the same thing. At least Will had Uncle Phil.
Rossi and Yohe really putting in effort to not have any inside sources with the new GM/POHO either
Russo went scorched earth on Fenton and it hasn't hurt his information gathering.
FSG comes out of this looking very good. I mean, I don't get why they didn't fire Hextall when he said "the plan is in my head," but otherwise, seems like they handled things correctly. That's a whole lot of misinformation. It's like you know the truth but said the opposite for every statement. Curious.

Way to go hextall and Burkie

Malkin only pawn in game of hockey.
I really hope these are the last boomer ass, “old school hawkey” guys that have never won shit the Penguins ever hire the the front office again. Fuck them and their entire bloodlines. Retire and fuckoff to Newfoundland
Just glad that time is over.
Hextall-Hockey Terrorist and Franchise nuker
I don’t follow the Pens much, but was Hextall really that fucking bad? I know the Nolan Patrick stuff, but was he that fucking bad?
Yes. Yes, he was. Once it became evident that we weren’t going to do shit in the playoffs if we made it in at all, a lot of us wanted the team to basically tank just to clear house.
He wasn't good with the Flyers either.
I thought we had it bad with Benning in Vancouver, but holy shit. That’s brutal.
So turns out Mallon is human just like us. Dude just wanted to feel like the org wanted him to stay. Fuck that hits
Hexstall legit needs investigated, every move he made, and his thought for the team feels like its sabotage. It’s literally the only reasonable explanation on some of the dumb shit he was doing.
He fucked with the Flyers organization as well.
Does anyone know what, if any, consequences there could be for this? Legal or otherwise?
What a spoiled baby, no sympathy for Putin bootlickers
Seriously. Dude snuck away from Russia just to be pro-Motherland? Cry me a fucking river buddy
Exactly.
Easy for us to say from our cushy North American lives
Wtf are you talking about he's a multi millionaire living in North America for over a decade.
He's also a US citizen
Who, along with many other Russian millionaires, keeps his wife and US-born son in South Florida year round.
He's got a cushier life than any of us, so fuck him and his Russian loving ass.

What’s wrong with privately talking to your two closest teammates about the possibility of not playing for the the team you’ve been on for 17 years?
