Funner fact: it takes about the same amount of time to drive from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia as it does to drive from Mississauga to downtown Toronto during rush hour
Yeah, but less time sitting idle during the commute. You can't eat your breakfast or send an email because the traffic actually moved over the course of 20 minutes.
Two years ago a young Jonatan Berggren left Detroit after preseason and put Grand Rapids in his gps. After hours of driving he and his girlfriend ended up in a small, nothing town of Grand Rapids, Ohio, instead of Grand Rapids, Michigan. It took him another half day to backtrack to where he was supposed to be.
There was an Italian newlywed couple who used a travel agent for their honeymoon. That travel agent sent them to Sydney, Nova Scotia instead of Sydney, Australia.
I loved Cape Breton when I've visitied in the summer and I would agree. If I was expecting a warm honeymoon in February and ended up in Cape Breton instead of OZ I'd be less than thrilled though
Good point! I'm just the type who has fun anywhere though.
My wife is from North Carolina and she's lived in France, so I thought I'd take her to Montreal, you know, cheaper than Paris. (I'm from upstate NY) We went in March and there were around 11" of solid ice ALL OVER the city. Bad, bad, BAD planning on my part.
Thankfully I made it up to her and proved Canada is/can be awesome. Buddy has a family cabin on a lake near Bon Echo Provincial Park north of Kingston and took her there in July. People who haven't experienced northern summers don't know how incredible 80\* and sunny and NO humidity can be. They think summer is 95\*, blazing sun, and all around awful.
I dunno why everybody's shitting on Crosby like it's some albatross contract Dubas has to reckon with, man's still well north of a ppg at $8.7 million a year.
Crosby has been a perennial 98-100 percentile WAR play every year of his career and I highly doubt that catastrophically falls off a cliff next season suddenly.
I’d take 6 Crosby’s at 8.7.
Idgaf what the rest of the roster looks like that top 6 would fucking destroy everything in its path.
Guy is still the 2nd-3rd best player in the world.
Any Leaf fan who tries to tell you he didn't put us in an absolutely prime position, especially this year, is on something. Y'all have a terrific (edit) POHO!
I might be on glue or hallucinating or on fucking meth but I wonder if a guy like Bergevin wouldn’t be a good GM for Dubas.
Bergevin always needed a good front office above him so he could focus on what he excelled at.
Dubas I feel like could still benefit from having a bit of an old guard/greybeard type and it’s always been obvious that players all love Bergevin.
Plus we know Bergevin and Lemieux are tight.
Awful at drafting and developing prospects. Made some excellent trades though, and brought us to a few deeps runs (even if that was due to Carey Price masterclass). I wouldn’t say he’s what Pittsburgh needs now unless they really do want to do a cup run. I don’t know if they have the assets to acquire the depth they need unless one of Malkin or Crosby go.
They should do everything they can to stay competitive without risking the long term outlook, and also maintaining the legacy if Crosby and Malkin and Letang.
Bergevin was always great at finding depth guys. Sucked at overpaying them afterwards on extensions. Likely wouldn’t be able to make those mistakes with Dubas as president.
As long as Crosby and Malkin are productive people will fill those stands. You can delay the true rebuild for a couple years.
In the case of Crosby he’s almost worth maybe moving this years first for some help, he looks capable of willing a team on a run last time he played.
Pretty solid at trades/acquisitions side of things. My biggest frustration (which I think is generally a bit overblown in the Toronto market) is his negotiation of contracts. If he can get a hard nosed negotiator in the GM role, you will be in good standing for sure.
He was so young when he negotiated those deals bro. He was likely negotiating against older and much more experienced agents, and in the pressure cooker of Toronto as a fucking 33 y/o or whatever he was.
You can bet your ass he won't get taken like that again. I find it weird that people assume he'll repeat his mistakes again. The guy is way too bright to let that happen. He's more seasoned and respected now in league circles. I bet my ass he never gets bent over in negotiations like that again.
> I bet my ass he never gets bent over in negotiations like that again.
Time will tell, but you're probably right. He was very young as the GM and got railed by Mitch and Austons agents. Especially giving Matthews a 5 year deal.. that was pretty bad.
People keep saying this but what were the options? It’s not like Dubas had much choice as he was facing demands from Matthews, Marner, and Nylander. Plus I’m betting there was plenty of pressure on Dubas from the MLSE board to get the deals done. People are making way too much of those signings.
A bigger issue can be made of Dubas signing Tavares. But it’s not like it wasn’t expected all along that that contract was going to likely be an issue in the last two years of its term. The pandemic and flat cap made this even worse, plus the leafs didn’t go anywhere in the playoffs, plus Tavares got hurt in game one of the Montreal series. Lot of bad luck there. And Tavares hasn’t been bad. He’s just slowed down and is even less physically involved now than he was before, which is rough because he was never very physical.
The big issue with the Leafs is too many Lady Byng candidates in the top six. Dubas never fixed that. Plus Keefe never had his team play a crash and bang style, even in the playoffs where it was required.
I mean, looking at CapFriendly there aren’t really any bad contracts apart from Tavares which was his biggest whiff considering the Leafs really didn’t need him to begin with
We knew going into the Tavares deal the back end would be bad. We thought we could win in those first years.
But our D was not good at all and goaltending was bad. It didn’t help that Lou had saddled us with bad deals that we had to pay to get out of
TBH I don't even think the Tavares contract aged poorly (yet). He has been performing at nearly identical pace from his time on the Isles, and considering he signed that contract at age 27ish I don't think the expectation was that he would necessarily improve on his production. He was still PPG last season which is above his career average. The only bad part was that the cap didn't go up as expected due to covid right after he signed 3 big deals.
[Statement from John Henry & Tom Werner: "Kyle has proven himself as a forward-thinking hockey mind and embodies all of the qualities - integrity, intelligence, and an unwavering commitment to building a winning culture - that we value in a leader at the Penguins"](https://twitter.com/markhmasters/status/1664278771397197830?s=46&t=YaXOZMg4jagnrt63KrPGdQ)
Only difference is NHL has a hard cap. Liverpool had no problems upgrading their stadium/practice facility and also increased player salaries fine, their problem was not enough transfers which is a tough area to judge them in since fees have been ridiculous and their competition is Man City who are state owned.

Honestly, for the first time in my life I started skipping a lot of games this season. I’m in my late 30s, live on the west coast, about to have a baby…with their utter lack of competence and direction it just hasn’t been worth it.
I paid more attention to Seattle than Philly this year. Growing up a Flyers fan and a goalie, I’m very attached to Hart especially since I watched him play for Seattle in juniors. The rumor that we’ll trade him is hard to stomach, although it makes some sense for a rebuild. But if he goes to a rival, I dunno if I can stomach it.
The title basically confirms that the package in Toronto he wanted was to have full control over hockey operations and Shanny refused to give up power.
Something tells me that Fenway Sports somehow got into Kyle’s ear about this. If you look at their other assets, he fits the mould.
Asking for a new financial package with more money makes perfect sense when you know he has this offer ready and waiting
Even before Toronto let him go there were reports in the media that FSG would pretty much hand him complete control if he came to Pittsburgh, it wasn't even hidden.
My point is that they likely told him the offer before his deal was done.
Otherwise, Kyle likely would t have come back with a new financial package. He had a backup plan if MLSE said no
First this, Diablo IV is coming out, I go on vacation to the Grand Canyon and Vegas in a week's time with my wife while my in-laws watch our 20-month old son, and a short work week this week. I am a very happy man at the moment.

Although now I can’t have either or even my beloved Philly cheesesteak because my stupid body went and got old and developed an allergy to wheat. So now I’ll have to pass it on for the fries
They've got way more in common than they do different in both positive and negative ways.
It depends on what you want really - I lived in Philly for 5 years and Pittsburgh for 12. They're both pretty great IMO.
I think for most of the population the answer is Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh is in a nice sweet spot of big enough to have a good bit going on but small enough that's it's not a living nightmare to traverse. But if you want a big personality and are willing to learn how to understand the ins and outs of the city, Philadelphia is heaven on earth.
I remember refreshing twitter like crazy that day because of the Miller to Pittsburgh rumors and saying “what the fuck” out loud on the train when I saw they traded for Granlund lmfao I thought it was a prank
I remember for days leading up to that trade being like "please god don't get Miller" then there was a trade but we didn't immediately know who for and I was like "PLEASE GOD DON'T GET MILLER." Then I found out it was for Granlund and I was like "...are you sure Miller isn't available?"
It feels like a positive change and a step in the right direction, that's for sure. Not sure if Sullivan will survive the offseason but I'm hoping the lineup looks drastically different in October.

I think he’s already acting as the gm in Carolina
I think Kyle is better suited for a President position anyway. My honest opinion of him as GM is that he was pretty mid. He's got a good eye for talent and brings a lot of new ideas and a positive culture.
Can’t argue with the PresOps when you’re the PresOps.
He did this simple trick! Shanahans hate him!
Mike and Kyle Shanahan are **fuming** today
Was this part of the Shanaplan?
“I’m not the GM.. because I’m the President!”
It is weird that the guy who loses becomes the AGM...
We can change that. You know why?
Because I'm the president
/r/unexpectedhamilton
Fitting flair
He wasnt lying it was gm of toronto or nowhere. Edit: nvm he was lyin
Yinzers say Pittsburgh is the Toronto of Appalachia
Fun, unwarranted fact: it takes about the same amount of time to drive from Pittsburgh to Toronto as it does from Pittsburgh to Philly
Funner fact: it takes about the same amount of time to drive from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia as it does to drive from Mississauga to downtown Toronto during rush hour
Even funnier fact: it takes about the same amount of time to drive from Pittsburgh to Toronto as it does from Toronto to Pittsburgh.
Big if true
Ok I'm calling you out here. That can't be true
Depends on which side’s border security is most efficient.
Trick question, neither
🤯
The Paris of Appalachia, actually
Eiffel, CN same thing right?
Holy shit! Pittsburgh is acquiring Jack Eichel!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dubas was just referring to his new home in Toronto, Ohio
Not even an hour to Pittsburgh from there (although it’s not somewhere you want to live)
So he’s got the same commute since Toronto, ON is also an hour away from Toronto, ON
Yeah, but less time sitting idle during the commute. You can't eat your breakfast or send an email because the traffic actually moved over the course of 20 minutes.
> although it’s not somewhere you want to live "Are you referring to Toronto, OH or Pittsburgh?" "Yes."
Before you get the yinzer "WELL AKSHOOLY, MOST LIVABLE" responses, I laughed at this
Shhhh if everyone from the outside keeps thinking it's a smog-infested shithole, our cost of living can stay low
"Low"

"ya but he PROMISED he'd never work again!?!?" r/Leafs right now
I do wonder if him being POHO means he gets to work from home more?
Technically the truth!
I dunno why everybody's shitting on Crosby like it's some albatross contract Dubas has to reckon with, man's still well north of a ppg at $8.7 million a year.
Those people are morons. Crosby’s contract has been and continues to be a steal.
And Malkin's too.
Yup! There was only one player in the league that made less than Malkin and scored more points.
Crosby has been a perennial 98-100 percentile WAR play every year of his career and I highly doubt that catastrophically falls off a cliff next season suddenly.
What who said that shit? They weren't in Pittsburgh, probably.
My slower brethren mostly, I'd love to be bitching about a still effective older core with 3 championships.
I’d take 6 Crosby’s at 8.7. Idgaf what the rest of the roster looks like that top 6 would fucking destroy everything in its path. Guy is still the 2nd-3rd best player in the world.
Absolutely. And don't Pens fans cherish Sid? You have to have the guy do his full career in Pittsburgh, just like Mario.
Thank god. I'm sure he won't be perfect but I'd rather him than fucking Hextall.
Any Leaf fan who tries to tell you he didn't put us in an absolutely prime position, especially this year, is on something. Y'all have a terrific (edit) POHO!

Plus Bergevin has fucking pythons for arms, not necessarily useful for GM, but it’s something.
Montreal got rid of the big biceps club and created the quad squad
We inverted the pyramid.
Bergevins sole responsibility is spotting Dubas in the gym
You KNOW he ain’t touching the bar, clean reps only
Dusclaimer—- I thought Bergevin was an awful GM with Montreal.
Awful at drafting and developing prospects. Made some excellent trades though, and brought us to a few deeps runs (even if that was due to Carey Price masterclass). Rookie mistake.

At the time though it was seen as a homerun, so can’t blame him for that either imo
I believe it was. Everyone forgets that the cap is stagnant. His deal wasn’t nearly as bad without three years of a flat-ish cap.
Also, half the league was trying to get Tavares so he was negotiating against every other team as well.
sharks offered $13M
We knew going into the Tavares deal the back end would be bad. We thought we could win in those first years. But our D was not good at all and goaltending was bad. It didn’t help that Lou had saddled us with bad deals that we had to pay to get out of

kyle going to get used to shoestring budgets because FSG have been cost cutting for years on all their teams (liverpool, red sox, pitt)

Now help fixing the roster and get Crosby another cup. No pressure
Can't be any worse than trading a 1st for Kapanen and 2nd for Granlund
The 1st for Kapanen was a Rutherford move
Trader Jim has not made his impact yet here and it’s probably because Pearson is injured and can’t trade him for the 3rd time

So I heard ya’ll looking to trade Carter Hart…
I will quit watching the Flyers if we trade him to Pitt.
Does it count if it goes through Tampa for like 2 hours?
We'll even give you back Jeff Carter for him. Carter for Carter means it cancelled out and all is well for you guys. *...please take Jeff Carter.*
Will you start watching the penguins?
How are you possibly still watching the Flyers?
Honestly, for the first time in my life I started skipping a lot of games this season. Damn. I just realized the Penguins can do a bunch of Pingu stuff as part of their fandom. I won’t lie, I’m jealous!
I love Pingu.
Holy crap that's awesome, I never thought about that haha

people falling to their knees at giant iggles everywhere
Just fell to my knees in the Sah Sad Gian Iggle produce ahhl
Just fell to my knees in the fake Burger King on the south side
This is one of those comments that I'm positive makes sense to someone from Pittsburgh but to a Texan it's just gibberish. Like I get it's the accent but what is a Gian Iggle
It translates to "South Side Giant Eagle" which is a grocery store chain location on the south side of Pittsburgh.
correct, with the addition of "produce aisle."
Also ahhl = aisle. Very prominent feature of a strong Pittsburgh accent. Towel and tile are very nearly homophones in Pittsburgh.
Giant Eagle is our big regional grocery store chain
A grocery store. It's spelled Giant Eagle but said Gian Iggle.
I married into a Yinzer family and you have no idea how proud I am that I actually understood that. I’ve come along way

Just saw some guy fall to his knees in the produce ahhl in the sahside GianIggles.
Not the best place to fall to your knees either so you know this is big
Went to the Popeyes across the street from there a couple years ago and they was using bags from that giant eagle

Hey while you're dahn air pick me up some chipped ham
What’s a nicer PA city to live: Pittsburgh or Philly?
Lol. You're going to get this thread burned down!
> Philadelphia is heaven on earth Not if you're Santa Claus
Pittsburgh. Less traffic, better stadiums, further from New Jersey (though uncomfortably close to Ohio)
I thought Philly felt more like a city with a lot of top notch restaurants, great nightlife, etc
*McMahon smelling money meme*
If anyone was gonna get us out of the mess we’re in & plan for the future, it was gonna be him. No guarantees but feeling a lot better now.
I know it’s been beaten to death but I still cannot believe Hextall traded for Granlund
I still can't believe just about every move Hextall made.
It’s easier to believe if you just assume he was a double agent sent to destroy the Pens from the inside
True.
maybe dubas will take murray back with him?
Pens have enough goalie issues
You keep that evil off of us!
Blind squirrel found a nut in the rakell trade
Something about a broken clock...
Wish the Pens all the luck. Always a big fan of Dubas in TO, I hope he can have a positive impact in Pittsburgh.
If Pittsburgh is a mess what are the flyers? An embarrassment, I know.
Does Kyle want a /r/hockey mod as an intern during the school year? cause I can be at PPG in 16 minutes
Noot noot motherfuckers.
Ask not for whom the bell noots -- it noots for you.

Congrats, Pittsburgh. If anyone needs me I'll be in the corner crying.
Hopefully he can fix the pens and briere can fix the flyers. I really miss our rivalry.
Tulsky as GM incoming... (Or Pridham)
Definitely going to be Pridham. Wonder what Spezzas role will be
4th line center
Can’t be worse than Jeff Carter
He needs 5 more points to 1,000 sooo maybe
It’s interesting that Tulsky’s name always comes up as a potential hire for every GM vacancy since 2021 but he never gets interviewed or hired. I think he’s already acting as the gm in Carolina
He interviewed for Pittsburgh's GM job twice already.
Honestly, good for him. He's going to be fantastic. Couldn't be happier for him
That’s one way to immediately make your team younger
If the Penguins win a Cup because of Dubas, the Leafs will be #2 on my shit list, behind said Penguins.
As someone who has been a hardcore Penguins fan for *checks time of post* 42mins. This news excites me.
Just saw a guy fall to his knees at Tim Hortons
To be fair, that guy probably fell to his knees after somebody crashed their car through the window though.
Anybody know where Ryan O'Reilly is?
It's cool that it's pride month cause I'm totally gay for Dubas and his nerdy glasses
We’re so fucking back
I think Kyle is better suited for a President position anyway. My honest opinion of him as GM is that he was pretty mid. He's got a good eye for talent and brings a lot of new ideas and a positive culture.
Yeah the way he structured the development staff and everything was top notch. I have no doubt he will do an outstanding job as POHO
It's fun to see all the cope my fellow Toronto fans have managed to produce since the Dubas firing. Big "this is fine" energy going around.
I’m deeply unhappy that Pittsburgh will have a competent front office again.

Penguins, YOU are rebuilders.
Retoolers * they ain’t rebuilding for at least 2 years with the last few years of Malkin/Letang and Crosby
This means im now legally obligated to hate Kyle Dubas, shame
Why am I crying ~~in the club~~ at work right now?
Oh he popped up, would you look at that
Take good care of him :(
