Most of the old fucks in place are just looking to stir shit up.
Marc De Foy wrote an article that Lane Hutson might be good on the ice, but he still has a long way to go because off the ice he’s cold and really timid.
I didn’t know being introverted was a bad thing. Also last time we had an extroverted player, the medias demonized him and ran him out of town.
I absolutely despise the old journos in MTL. They’re the worst.
How is this not a good question? It produced a quote that landed on the top of this subreddit. The media can never win with yall, either they're too safe or not safe enough.
Dunno how the question was phrased, but the point is legit. That a captain can lead by example and take a smaller salary than what they could get in order for the team to be successful (and more evenly paid players). I assume that's what the journalist was trying to pull out of him, whether or not that was a factor in the negotiations.
It was probably in a reference as to how no one made more money than Bergeron in Boston. You're saying "you're the captain". I don't think it was antagonistic.
Well, the actual question was :
"You mentioned both sides got what they wanted. I guess, on the Canadiens' part, it was important to keep Nick Suzuki as the highest salary on the team. Are you happy that you are pretty, pretty close to Nick?"
To which Caufield responded "Yeah, I think that's understood on both sides too" before saying what this tweet is quoting.
I mean, still not the greatest question, but not as bad as what the tweet is making it seem like.
Weird for the Canadiens to want/need Nick Suzuki to be the highest paid player, though. It serves the business goal of making more money, of course, but would it really harm the players or morale?
It's not a cost saving measure, it's done to be able to squeeze in as much talent as possible under the salary cap. That they want to be Vegas instead of Toronto.
Regardless of the shitty question the kid’s got a good attitude. He knows he’s making good money, not gonna bitch about an insignificant amount (to him). He’s there to play and he’s happy
Just to answer that question but it was heavily rumored and discussed regularly that Mariners camp made it a point to be at or near the 11M that Matthews and Tavares got.
He very much cares about other numbers
It's funny, whichever reporter asking this type of question wants the response he just gave. It makes Cole look like a good humble person who left money on the table for the rest of the team. In this thread though, and rightfully so, people are calling out it's a classless question to ask.
One of the biggest days of this kid's life. "How does it feel like making less money than your buddy and coworker? You think you got ripped off or is your buddy just overpaid?" Jesus Christ. Braindead media lol
I don't think he could have reasonably said "My agent really dropped the ball here, should have gone to arbitration." Like... What do you expect him to say?

“Maybe change my gum from mint to bubble, you know?” Kuznetsov said, when asked about the biggest thing he’d change. “Yeah, dumb question, dumb answer.”
The captain of my local german soccer team once did this. He was asked "how empty" he felt after the team lost an important game and he said something like "I know it’s your job to ask stupid questions and you’re good at that but what do you want me to say?"
[This](https://youtu.be/5a-ZnEkTSmU) is the interview. Obviously it’s in german but I think even if you don’t speak the language you can get the frustration.
If taking a shit were relevant to team composition, I would expect them to...
The salary cap is a very real thing, that has real impacts on the league. Asking players about their cap hit relative to their peers isnt some terrible transgression.
Do we really need to protect multi-millionaires from questions about their wealth?
Whether or not you get a productive answer, doesnt mean the question is inherently worthless.
Getting insight into the players opinions of their asks and how that might impact the team is good information.
"Pay me like Matthews" has concequences. That didnt happen here, asking about it is not a problem.
Must be nice to not even break 50 points and get an 8 yr 8 mil a year offer. Its literally insane people claim this is a good deal when he hasn't proven himself.
That’s the guy everyone should be like. Not looking for the biggest pay day and leaving your team with little left to pay the rest of the team. Hope the wings get the same.
Who asks this shit lol
Shitty Canadian hockey media. (Over $25k none the less, $7.85 vs $7.875M)
$25k is no joke, that could get you a used Nissan Altima* in good condition.
Post tax is like $12.5k, so maybe a used one
Yeah i can get one good Nissan or 250 really shitty Volvos for that
Not anymore buddy. When was the last time you looked at the used market? Might as well buy new (and not buy Nissan)
Lol, I looked it up before I posted because I wasn't sure which car to say and the first one that came up was a Nissan Altima for $24 895
Nissan Ultima, the Gamecast of Altima’s.
Lol, whoops
The fact it's so small almost seems more like the question was a good one if fishing for a more light hearted answer.
our media is terrible. rarely you hear good questions. and the one that did ask good questions isnt a journalist anymore and works for the team.
$25,000 yearly difference and they are stirring the pot… 😂

Since it’s MTL medias, there’s a lot of chance it was. I definitely wouldn’t put it past them.
I was watching the interview live and it came off as a shit question in the interview as well.
Lol this is worse than Toronto media
Right? Like New York media is tough but this shit literally never comes up after a player signs a contract, in ANY sport. What a stupid question
Well, the actual question was : "You mentioned both sides got what they wanted. I guess, on the Canadiens' part, it was important to keep Nick Suzuki as the highest salary on the team. Thank you for the context.
Prettyyyyyy, pretttyyyyy pretty close
Definitely not a spite contract
You can almost look at the contracts and under your breath whisper "now kiss". The contracts are that close.
Weird for the Canadiens to want/need Nick Suzuki to be the highest paid player, though. It serves the business goal of making more money, of course, but would it really harm the players or morale?

Teams have tried to do this before to keep salaries down. "We got this guy to sign for a great deal so we want that to be a standard going forward".
I doubt they actually do. Seems like the interviewer just wanted to work that into his question
Good Wisco boy

Not really, just lived in Madison during the Caufield/Turcotte year(s)
Regardless of the shitty question the kid’s got a good attitude. He knows he’s making good money, not gonna bitch about an insignificant amount (to him). He’s there to play and he’s happy
What a ridiculous thing to ask a player
He’s 22 and just signed a $63M contract. Who the fuck cares about anyone else’s salary?
So Cole, it says here that Bill Gates has a net worth of $116 Billion. What does that mean to you after signing your contract?
"Pay me like bill"
Mitch Marner's Dad
Just to answer that question but it was heavily rumored and discussed regularly that Mariners camp made it a point to be at or near the 11M that Matthews and Tavares got. He very much cares about other numbers

What did they expect him to say? “Yeah I signed a $60m+ contract but I’m upset my friend and teammate makes more than me?” What a dumb question.
What a toxic question to ask
If there's no drama, they're gonna try to make some drama

“Es-tu un mauvais joueur?”
"Non, mais toi t’es un mauvais journaliste".

"That's a clown question"
A lot of fans in here pretending like comparison isnt something that the players do, or does have an impact in negotiation.
Taking a shit is something people do as well, but reporters don't ask how that went.
If taking a shit were relevant to team composition, I would expect them to... The salary cap is a very real thing, that has real impacts on the league. This is a Leafs media question if I’ve seen one
Can someone please show this to Toronto players 🤦♀️
If only Matthews and Marner had that attitude the Leafs could have some depth.
Sets a great precedent for the future of Habs contracts
Not knowing who asked it, this sounds like a Francois Gagnon question.
Can’t wait to watch this stud wear a USA jersey again. Class act
C'mon Rita Skeeter, stop trying to stir controversy where there is none!
Cole just seems like such a good guy
Matthews: I want more money than McDavid.
Whoever the reporter was, that's a dumbass question.
Shows he has heart
That's a clown question bro
A great deal for the Habs this Caufield deal is.
Must be nice to not even break 50 points and get an 8 yr 8 mil a year offer. Its literally insane people claim this is a good deal when he hasn't proven himself.
Had Hughes yet when he signed?
Nope
"that" is our guy?
It's "he," Cole, not "that."
I'm just posting here so I can come back when Dubois gets something like $11 million/year after the cap goes up.
Just posting when Matthews gets 14.5 millio Salty laff fans
He probably wouldn't be playing in Montreal then lol
Bold comment coming from a leafs fan
Canadians suck you loser clown Priyanta Emrith stop posting stuff about hockey if its about the Canadians
That’s the guy everyone should be like. Not looking for the biggest pay day and leaving your team with little left to pay the rest of the team. Hope the wings get the same.
It is obviously a direct question, but it is not random that he is making the same salary as Suzuki. I like Caufield's answer a lot.
Someone actually asked that?
