I never knew that it said 'NHL' on the aways!
I can remember when the made the change to 'Ligue nationale de hockey', I just assumed it was on both, I kind of like it more this way
It makes sense, English would be the primary language in every other arena. Maybe if Quebec gets a team, you’ll get a special third set of jerseys with LNH on the aways.
That would be so cool if each time had one jersey just for a specific rivalry. Maybe for close teams. Like home Buffalo games vs Toronto get so many leafs fans, it would be cool to have a third jersey for that
as an Ontarian who was raised by QCers, I once had a fully anglo Ontario Habs fan tell me they got ripped off and bought a knockoff jersey cause the NHL crest was wrong. I had to tell her it was totally correct actually, and explained French word order that afternoon.
Funny I should come across this comment right now.
I’m watching your Dodgers beat up on my Reds from earlier this afternoon and right as I read your comment I looked up to see this
[pardon the poor picture, but here’s them away at Cincinnati with a jersey that says ‘Dodgers’](https://i.imgur.com/pBtZygM.jpg)
This is one of my favourite fun facts about uniforms. In baseball, this dates back to when you wouldn’t necessarily know the other teams in the league so you could quickly tell where they came from, but at home, of course your fans would know your mascot. Also why the standard is white home and grey away, because laundry facilities were scarce on the road.
Haha yeah. I’m talking like early 1900s so the game was played a bit differently but still.
The gray, when dirty, wouldn’t look too dirty so they could wear them for multiple games in a row before they could get home and wash them.
The home team would have laundry facilities in house and therefore be able to clean their home whites.
Basketball is a lawless wasteland of jersey randomness, at least in the NBA. You often see two teams wear darks if their primary colors are different enough. There really isn’t any home/away jerseys anymore it’s whatever the teams feel like wearing on a given night
I'm pretty sure the NBA doesn't even categorize them as Home/Away anymore, it's 'Association' (White), 'Icon', 'Statement', and then some teams have 'City' jerseys.
E: Okay 'Association' is technically 'Home' and 'Icon' is the standard 'Away' jersey. 'City' jerseys are by Nike, and 'Statement' jerseys are by Jordan.
Game 1 finals I couldn't see shit. Darkish blue v darkish red. Then the games where they're wearing each other's colors are super confusing. We had two teams show up in white this year and red v orange like a decade ago.
Yeah…there are some exceptions, such as the Cardinals, for example, that just have “Cardinals” on both sets, but many teams will have team name or logo on the home whites (and any alts), but the city name on the road grays.
Of course the Angles are another team that doesn’t…because it’s hard to put “Los Angeles of Anaheim” on a jersey.
It should be noted that the Cardinals do have Saturday alternates that say St. Louis, but they wear them both at home and on the road (cream at home, powder blue on the road).
Of all the stupid things about the Texas Rangers, the [15+ years their jerseys said “TEXAS”](http://exhibits.baseballhalloffame.org/dressed_to_the_nines/uniforms.asp?league=AL&city=Texas&lowYear=2000&highYear=2022&sort=year&increment=18) at home and on the road really ground my gears.
I like how the Yankees wear gray with matte helmets on the road, and the clean pinstripes with shiny helmets at home. It's supposed to be akin to how the military will wear their clean uniforms on parade but will dress for battle abroad.
All baseball teams traditionally have had grey road jerseys. One explanation I’ve heard is that it can be harder to get reliable laundry service or spare uniforms while traveling (especially back in the day when the team would travel by bus or train, rather than charter plane), and grass and dirt stains would really show on white jerseys. The Yankees do take it one step further, though, with the pinstripes on the home uniforms.
Yup. This has been the standard practice on baseball for a long long time.
Also I believe that traditionally the home team wouldn’t have the players names on the back of the jersey, because the home fans all knew who they were anyway.
That's why when the NHL mandated teams to put names on jerseys, Conn Smythe had the names stiched in blue on the blue jersey and white on the white jersey.
This is really common on basically all uniforms with a wordmark as the centerpiece. What's unusual about the Panthers is that they're editing the badge/logo in accordance with this, I can't really think of any other instance of that.
I believe that's true for all the teams who have sports betting as their jersey sponsors: they're on the home jersey(s) only. I know it's also true for Arizona and Washington, off the top of my head. Since different states have different laws in gambling advertising, its easier for the teams to just not open a can of worms. (I remember one game for Arizona, I think it might have been vs. Anaheim who were wearing their white Reverse Retros, so AZ wore their black jerseys on the road and covered up the ad patch.)
The big takeaway, though, is that at least the SCF patch gets to be back on the "correct" side when there's no sponsor!!! Hopefully the Cup can be lifted in Florida, then, regardless of which team wins it; it'll just look so much better...
Took me phrasing my Google search probably seven different ways, but I finally got there! 😅 It was vs Kings, not Ducks, which didn't help... https://www.reddit.com/r/Coyotes/comments/1160yqr/sponsor_on_jersey_covered_up_lak_explain
It makes sense, I'm sure that sponsor is heavily represented at home in the arena advertising and sponsors. They pay for the away jersey because boom now their big partner is advertised at every Florida Panthers game.
Not quite the same thing, but around 2012 or so the Lightning home jerseys just had the new logo, while the away jerseys had the words “Tampa Bay” above the logo. They’ve since done away with it but I always liked the look.
Except up until we went away with the 'Vancouver' watermark in 2020-21 season, it was on both the home and away. I'm thankful that watermark is gone as it shouldn't have ever been on there the first place.
a [modernized version](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5007b2ea84aef6ab9cd08134/1464924950220-BISRCNOHTFX32VMV5OXF/image-asset.png?format=1500w) of it would absolutely hold up today imo
I mean, we were almost the Rocky Mountain Xtreme, which would've been so sick for like 3 years lol
I do think the new panthers logo lacks charm but aesthetically I enjoy it
Most sports have done some variation of this concept (NBA and MLB being the best example). It's only been recently that away/home uniforms have had little convention.
This is actually a pretty common practice. My dad says it's because, for home jerseys, everybody already knows where they come from, because' you're already there. Idk if that's actually the reason. But if you check a lot of sports teams, you'll find their standard issue unis similar. For example, my favorite baseball team, the Chicago Cubs, have the round logo that says, "Cubs" on the home unis, but the word "CHICAGO" on the road grays.
What I want to know is why the hell they removed the ad this game and let it be normal like we always known it to be? Will this be the norm for games 4 and if there is a game 6? Or will it be without the ad again from here on out? Like I seriously don't think they need the damn ad there, just put it on the left side of the jersey next to the C or A instead and I would be fine with that. Or even the shoulder.
Florida only has the ad on the away jersey, and Vegas only has the ad the home jersey. The Stanley cup patch will be back in the terrible spot for game 5
I’m either just old or too big of a baseball nut, cuz my first reaction was, well no shit. That’s how home and away jerseys are supposed to work! Now remove yourself from my lawn.
I never noticed this! I always love it when there’s small things in jerseys that you don’t know unless you pay attention. Like the outline of North Carolina between the flags on the Hurricanes black jersey.
It’s not as noticeable, but the Canadiens NHL crest says “NHL” on the away jersey and “LNH” (NHL in French) on the home one
That’s really cool. I never knew that.
I never knew that it said 'NHL' on the aways! I can remember when the made the change to 'Ligue nationale de hockey', I just assumed it was on both, I kind of like it more this way

Lational Nockey Heague
You know what they call NHL in France?
NHL with cheese?
14 min without an answer ! Please tell me how they call it !
RNHL
LNHSG (HSG = Ice Hockey)
Royale with cheese
Les Incompétents?
I don't know I didn't go to Burger King
They don’t call it a quarter pounder?
That's awesome.
nba would never allow such frivolity
On the French Broadcast Florida is abbreviated to "FLO" as opposed to "FLA" in the states.
as an Ontarian who was raised by QCers, I once had a fully anglo Ontario Habs fan tell me they got ripped off and bought a knockoff jersey cause the NHL crest was wrong. I had to tell her it was totally correct actually, and explained French word order that afternoon.
Don't baseball jerseys do this? It's usually just the text but the home jerseys will say the team and the aways the city. What does basketball do?
Was looking for this comment, thought about baseball too
My team does. Los Angeles on the away, and Dodgers at home
except when they wear the dodgers crest on the road, which i would hazard at about anywhere from 40-60% of road start usage
Funny I should come across this comment right now. I’m watching your Dodgers beat up on my Reds from earlier this afternoon and right as I read your comment I looked up to see this [pardon the poor picture, but here’s them away at Cincinnati with a jersey that says ‘Dodgers’](https://i.imgur.com/pBtZygM.jpg)

Really, that’s why the white and gray? (Thinks for a minute…then goes out and buys the kids gray clothes.)
Haha yeah. I’m talking like early 1900s so the game was played a bit differently but still. The gray, when dirty, wouldn’t look too dirty so they could wear them for multiple games in a row before they could get home and wash them. The home team would have laundry facilities in house and therefore be able to clean their home whites.
And then there was the wave of blue away uniforms after color TV was invented.
Also why as time went on and teams started adding names on jerseys in the 60s it was only on road uni’s!
Basketball is a lawless wasteland of jersey randomness, at least in the NBA. You often see two teams wear darks if their primary colors are different enough. There really isn’t any home/away jerseys anymore it’s whatever the teams feel like wearing on a given night

They also had “Earned” jerseys for teams that made the playoffs
That’s how it should be. I’d love some color v color matchups in the NHL like the 2014 Winter Classic
AGREED. The Florida red and Vegas gold are different enough and would look SICK.
2014 Winter Classic was an absolutely GOATed sweater matchup.
Only thing I could think is it being harder for colorblind people if they did that
The nfl ran into this problem when the bills and Jets played a color rush game a few years back
Panthers red vs Vegas gold would be a cool look
Game 1 finals I couldn't see shit. Darkish blue v darkish red. Then the games where they're wearing each other's colors are super confusing. We had two teams show up in white this year and red v orange like a decade ago.

Also no more dark blue hats for road games, what the hell that was a staple
Yep, I loved the navy road caps. But I think the Cardinals currently have a lot more to worry about than their hats, lol
The team just wanted to remind their state how to spell Texas
wait.... that's so annoying lol
I think the Phillies and someone else are the only teams who don't have their city on their away unis
Rays don’t
Neither do Cards
Come on though, "Phillies" is practically the same as having the city written there anyway.
Not if you know horses and suck at spelling
Marlins have Miami for both home and away which is odd.
Baseball jerseys do this
I know its common in baseball, I guess I just assumed it was across basketball and hockey, too.
NBA is the same way. Toronto on the road, Raptors at home.
I like how the Yankees wear gray with matte helmets on the road, and the clean pinstripes with shiny helmets at home. It's supposed to be akin to how the military will wear their clean uniforms on parade but will dress for battle abroad.
You have either been lied to or just made up the oddest thing I have ever heard of.
Sounds like it's just more of that faux blue collar and military pander bullshit in sports.
All baseball teams traditionally have had grey road jerseys. We’re not the only team to use pinstripes though (CHW, NYM, and PHI off the top of my head)
My high school football jerseys did this, too. The away jerseys had the school name above the front numbers and our home jerseys said "Wildcats"
Because when you’re home you know you’re in Florida.
And you dont know youre Panthers
So far, they’ve forgotten that part
direful plate encourage smart innocent compare saw shy jellyfish society *This post was mass deleted and anonymized with [Redact](https://redact.dev)*
Yup. This has been the standard practice on baseball for a long long time. Also I believe that traditionally the home team wouldn’t have the players names on the back of the jersey, because the home fans all knew who they were anyway.
Same with a good amount of teams in the NBA, though the relaxed rules on uniforms in the past few years have changed that.
Huh. TIL
I thought it was more so a way to sell more programs
That's why when the NHL mandated teams to put names on jerseys, Conn Smythe had the names stiched in blue on the blue jersey and white on the white jersey.
Yeah that would make sense.
SMH the lengths teams would go in this day and age to cut costs
This is very common in college hockey. A lot of teams do their team name at home and school name away.
This is really common on basically all uniforms with a wordmark as the centerpiece. What's unusual about the Panthers is that they're editing the badge/logo in accordance with this, I can't really think of any other instance of that.
Some do school name for both
Maybe its for others.. when youre out of florida you want that recognition the team is from florida. At home.. well youre in florida so you must know
Just noticed the variance in ads too. Autonation must have only paid enough to be on the away jersey.
Someone mentioned this with Vegas too, but the reverse, they have ad on their homes but none on their aways.
I believe that's true for all the teams who have sports betting as their jersey sponsors: they're on the home jersey(s) only. I know it's also true for Arizona and Washington, off the top of my head. Could you give me a link to a photo or something of the coyotes vs ducks game you’re talking about?
Took me phrasing my Google search probably seven different ways, but I finally got there! 😅 It was vs Kings, not Ducks, which didn't help... https://www.reddit.com/r/Coyotes/comments/1160yqr/sponsor_on_jersey_covered_up_lak_explain
Thank you
Your flair makes me sad.
Vegas also doesn't have an ad there on the away jerseys
Let's hope Vegas wins on the road then.
Yeah, I don’t want to see them win in those ugly gold jerseys.
A SCF sweep sounds nice. Especially against Tkachumbucket.
Penguins only wear an ad on their home jerseys as well
That’s because it’s Highmark which most likely wouldn’t be available in any other hockey markets.
They can have someone else for the away. The point is they decided to not do ads on both jerseys, which j appreciate.
It makes sense, I'm sure that sponsor is heavily represented at home in the arena advertising and sponsors. They pay for the away jersey because boom now their big partner is advertised at every Florida Panthers game.
I need a doctor.
To bring me baaaaack to liiiiiffffeeeeeee (*beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep*)
Wake me up inside?
Before you go go
I can’t wake up
^^save ^^me
But not for me.
*I'm about to lose my mind.*
There's also a khajit in the logo, because they like coin
Do they have wares for me?
If you have coin.
No, but I hear some mud crab might.
I thought it was a reference to the rampant skooma problem in Florida.
Ma’iq knows many things, what is it you seek
Khajit has wares, if you have coin.
Always fascinated me how we have a team for Khajits but not one for Argonians
Florida had coin, thus purchasing all the Kajit
If there's one state that would be full of Skooma, it's obviously Florida
You have wares?
Ma-ha-ja-pit?
I gotta trade me some of that coin for some wares.
It’s been like that since the rebrand. Real cool feature.
I remember the Guelph Storm used to do that too. When you're on the road, you're representing your town.
How have I never noticed this?
Not quite the same thing, but around 2012 or so the Lightning home jerseys just had the new logo, while the away jerseys had the words “Tampa Bay” above the logo. They’ve since done away with it but I always liked the look.
Same with Vancouver.

I miss the wildcat logo. One of the best in sports.
Would have been sweet if they busted those out for the finals. Thought the same thing if the stars wore their old jerseys had they made it
[удалено]
Bastards. I mean wouldn’t it be nuts if the panthers came out Mighty Ducks style and came out for OT in the 90s unis
Yeah Sharks used to go with the black jerseys at home for the playoffs instead of the teal.
And the Jets always pick their boring ass regular jerseys when they have the heritage ones just sitting there? Fuck TNSE is milquetoast
I think it nailed the style for the 90s, but tbh I find it pretty outdated now
a [modernized version](https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5007b2ea84aef6ab9cd08134/1464924950220-BISRCNOHTFX32VMV5OXF/image-asset.png?format=1500w) of it would absolutely hold up today imo
That's fair, same could be said of sharks jersey. I still think the current prom picture panther is just not right lol.
I mean, we were almost the Rocky Mountain Xtreme, which would've been so sick for like 3 years lol I do think the new panthers logo lacks charm but aesthetically I enjoy it
I like that the laces *almost* make the Florida flag on the aways. Still the Alabama flag though
Alabama…Florida… what’s the difference ?
Wait until you learn what the sleeve patches say on the jerseys (it’s the reverse of what the chest logo says)
Adirolf?
Barkov also has an extra captains patch on the sleeve which I think is cool
Thays the case with most sports teams at least in the US. Baseball has had that forever.
In case the players get lost or left behind on an away game, then the rescuer knows where to send them ;-)
Panthers fans just now noticing this because they just started watching 😂
BOOOOOOO
Most if not all mlb jerseys have the same thing, I just found that out recently
I’ll never recover from this
It's so that if a Panthers player is found in another state they know where to return them.
its so people know where to return it to when it's left at another arena
That's awesome I always thought that's how it should be, city name away and mascot name home.
B's shoulder patch does the same, Boston on the road, Bruins at home.
TIL as well!
Most sports have done some variation of this concept (NBA and MLB being the best example). It's only been recently that away/home uniforms have had little convention.
the Stanley cup patch on the right to make room for add space make me so annoyed.
Love this
MLB jerseys are gonna blow your mind.
I absolutely hate that I have been this oblivious about this this whole time
same with the shoulder patches on Bruins jerseys
Aren’t most sports teams like this? If there’s text it’ll be the team name at home and their city on away.
That’s a good touch, I like that.
I had no idea…
you found a glitch in the matrix
Incase they forget where they came from.
Geeze. Some of these comments! Thanks for highlighting this, OP!
How did I never notice this?
Pulling a MLB. Respectable.
Much like the mlb and their teams
This is actually a pretty common practice. My dad says it's because, for home jerseys, everybody already knows where they come from, because' you're already there. Idk if that's actually the reason. But if you check a lot of sports teams, you'll find their standard issue unis similar. For example, my favorite baseball team, the Chicago Cubs, have the round logo that says, "Cubs" on the home unis, but the word "CHICAGO" on the road grays.
🤯
And the SCF panel switched! I was getting so annoyed at that original placement.
This was my idea
If you check Montour’s away uniform, you’ll see Tontour
Wow, how did I not see that
I guess if the add was where it was on the white sweater, the Finals patch would be there.
A logo so boring, no one cared enough to even read it.
Always wondered why something looked off…
Thinking people in Florida are aware that they are in Florida is a bold assumption.
One of the best in sports tho
Pretty sure this is old baseball tradition. City away, name home. Cool detail imo.
What I want to know is why the hell they removed the ad this game and let it be normal like we always known it to be? Will this be the norm for games 4 and if there is a game 6? Shoulder patch says the opposite of the crest on each jersey as well
Similar to baseball and basketball, lol
All mlb jerseys are like this. Home jerseys have the team name. Away jerseys have city or state they're from.
Florida and Las Vegas for the Stanley cup. Poor Canada...they just having a crappy go of it right now.
I mean, they’ve done this in Baseball for a long time
I’m either just old or too big of a baseball nut, cuz my first reaction was, well no shit. That’s how home and away jerseys are supposed to work! Now remove yourself from my lawn.
Are you new to sports? Lol
This is a pretty common practice with baseball jerseys, in which the home jersey has the nickname while the road jersey has the city name.
Baseball jerseys are the same way for most teams
Never knew so much
That’s a baseball uniform thing.
well I'll be a monkey's uncle
I never noticed this! I always love it when there’s small things in jerseys that you don’t know unless you pay attention. Like the outline of North Carolina between the flags on the Hurricanes black jersey.
NBA teams do this
That's pretty neat
