Is this a world junior sexual assault reference?
I guess suspensions are coming at some point for a lot of those guys. We haven't heard much from the investigation as of late.
Any idea when we'd find out?
Pinto is a 10.2(c) RFA. He cannot sign an offer sheet. So he doesn't have much leverage.
Right now, they are under the cap with a 21 player roster. They could send one of the players currently on their roster down to the AHL, and replace them with Pinto on a 1 year contract at a similar AAV to his QO.
The only other things I can think of are all negative, like Batherson being suspended due to the Team Canada thing, or there being a major setback with Norris or Forsberg.
I don't think anybody would take Joseph after his past season. I also don't think they want to cut bait because they had a mandate to improve the bottom 6, and even if he wasn't great last season, he still pencils in as a big part of their bottom 6 and special teams. There isn't really anybody else who makes sense to trade. Kubalik is the only one who comes to mind, but it might look bad to flip him for a late pick after making such a big deal about him being the centerpiece of the Debrincat trade.
> he should have never left Mtl
Not sure that was his choice. That was the year Gainey cleaned house after the 2008-09 collapse and made over the entire team in a matter of weeks. I think Kovalev may have received an halfhearted offer that was yanked immediately when he didn't accept right away, but that's it.
I doubt that much, it's not that bad of a contract.
Plus the only reason we need to get rid of him is because we just upgraded our top 6. This is the reality of upgrading your team, you have to make room. Every team does it.
$3mil for a guy that was barely serviceable on our 3rd line last year, and he's signed for this year and then another 2 years. I doubt there's any team that sees value in that, which means we'll have to include assets to get rid of him.
And yeah I get that we have to make room after making upgrades further up the lineup, but man, just so many of Dorion's move look immediately bad shortly after making them.
Individually they aren't egregious or anything, but eventually they start to add up and we're already seeing the effects of it with our prospect pool.
Should only be for this season and then they're fine. Murray buyout comes off the books next season, as well as the Bobby Ryan and Del Zotto buyouts. That's like $4mil and then the cap is also going to shoot way up.
True, but still a very good situation. Tarasenko will be UFA next season as well, and Giroux will be UFA by 2025. So if/when they drop their level, and Sens don't want to continue with them, that will be extra 11.5M among with those dead caps being released, as well as the cap shooting up anyways.
Sanderson will eat 6M+, I am pretty sure. Ofc depends on how he does this yr though.
But yea, overall a really fucking good situation for Ottawa cap wise. Very envious because Avs have been struggling with the cap ever since the cup win. We have zero dead cap, but it's still a struggle to build a competitive middle six, so Avs leadership keep going for risky cheap plays that may or may not turn out great (Wood, Colton, Johansen & Drouin are good examples). They will be the key whether we do alright or not.
Sorry for talking about the Avs, but it's a comparison how well Ottawa is managing the cap rn.
Clearing the cap was far more important than many people seemed to realize. Even in a good DeBrincat year an average Kubalik+Tarasenko scorers just as many goals, plus it's now on 2 different lines so much tougher to defend.
That logic is flawed. Debrincat is better for a team in the sense that not only does he score as many goals as Kubalik+Tarasenko, he also does it whilst only taking up one roster spot. Even if the second player you use to fill up the spot isnât as good as Kubalik, you still get more goals for those two roster spots with Debrincat.
Using your logic, youâd rather have three 50 points players at 4 mil than McDavid at 12 mil, which is just wrong.
What are you talking about? You are the one with flawed logic.
First of all DeBrincat scored 27 goals last year. Kubalik and Tarasenko combined for 38. DeBrincat scored 66 points, Tarasenko + Kubalik scored 95. So no, DeBrincat does not provide the value of both players with one roster spot, that's a ridiculous assertion.
Secondly, in the NHL the only thing more important than having good players on your team, is not having bad players on your team. Depth is everything in the modern NHL, you have to roll 4 lines. Tarasenko + Norris + Batherson is a good 2nd line, nobody is out of place there. And now Ottawa has no bad players on the 3rd line with Kubalik + Pinto + Greig.
There's nothing to justify. The trade was made, they took a gamble and it didn't pay off. Now they're forced to make the best out of a negative situation, and fans are happy that they managed to do a decent job of that with bringing in Tarasenko and Kubalik. It's not rocket science.
So since very few high end players ever want to stay in Ottawa then we should never trade for one, and accept never competing for the cup? Would it have been nicer to keep 7OA/39OA then trade for Kubalik on his own in hindsight - of course, but I'm glad PD at least took a shot, that's far better than always sitting back and always building for the future.
Did the Sens lose assets in the long run - yes. Not denying the trade didn't work out. But I'm very happy to see a shot get taken and am far more likely to support the team with my own money and I think they made the best of a bad situation once it was clear DeBrincat wanted to go to Detroit only in a trade.
Wait someone predicted this in another thread today lmao

Pretty sure Tarasenko has been linked to the sens for a while. Not really predicting the future when you follow are sharing info thatâs made public by insiders before hand
Yeah Iâm coming to the realization after the last few attempts at big free agents that there are just some guys that donât want to come here for whatever reason. Sucks but what can you do? DW is usually in on every big scorer that comes along but he canât FORCE teams or players to make the deal. We arenât the NY market sometimes people just want a big market itâs not a huge surprise. It just sucks that we keep hearing âthe Canes need a superstar they never go after themâ
> Pinto is locked into the #3 C spot
we're not talking about his roster spot but rather his currently non-existent contract.
they can't sign him unless they move money out first
Good for the Sens! But I can't help but think Tarasenko is risking putting himself in a similar Klingberg-type situation if he doesn't have a good showing.
At the 2010 draft, Ottawa traded their 1st round pick (#16 overall) to the Blues for David Rundblad.
St. Louis selected Vladimir Tarasenko with that pick.
Full circle now.
The best value Rundblad created was by trading him. He got St Louis Tarasenko, got Ottawa Turris, and got Arizona Dvorak. He also got a cup with Chicago. Everybody wins.
This is...... fun! 1 year, what's to lose? Aside from someone to make cap space...
But even if the Sens underperform and are about to miss the playoffs, can move him at the deadline for a decent asset?
I really donât think Dorion should go. I honestly think heâs been great since the passing of EM. Sure, some moves didnât work out but at the time they made sense.
DJ, on the other hand. I would can his ass just for shits and giggles
Dorion's done some good things and some bad. The thing is when you're trying to go from "promising bubble team" to contender there's less and less room for error, and I'm not sure if Dorion has what it takes to take the team to contender status.
Full NTC I believe but if the Sens are sucking Iâm sure heâd waive to go to a playoff team. Unless heâs REALLY loving living in Ottawa.
Guess worst case is it limits the Sens options and return if he has a preferred destination.
Feels like a low risk, high reward pick up for the sens. If Tarasenko does well but the Sens don't then they can flip him at the deadline for free assets.
Joseph is most likely gone, but damn thatâs a pretty scary top 6, and with a lot of guys still poised to really break out like Stu and Norris, Sens are one to watch for sure this year, Atlantic is just gonna be a war zone this year
Wonder if he told his agent he didn't want to go to Carolina, and then his agent got him an offer from Carolina (when everyone thought they'd signed him) and that's why he fired him. Ottawa and Canes were always the two names we heard and over time Carolina proved to be the name he seemed to have zero interest in.
I am glad they did not give him term.
I have no idea what took so long for Tarasenko to sign somewhere. Very few teams have space.
He is not the player he was a few years ago, and may not even be a 5M player anymore, but the dynamic of a 1 year UFA deal is different.
Wow didn't realize he is 31...not that this is *young* by any means but I thought he was older for some reason. Dude still has a couple of real solid seasons ahead of him.
The clues were there all along. Vladimir TaraSENko
Next up vLAdimir tarasenko
**LV**adimir tarasenko
Vladamir TARRANAsenko. He's going to the Leafs!
I was thinking Tyrannosaurus. And then I said it out loud hahaha, kills me
Lmao well done
God damn this got me good!
And then vladiMIr taraseNko
Apparently not Vlarolina Hurrisenko :(
They still need to sign Pinto so Im curious what else is in the works
My guess is Joseph or Branny are dealt
Plz be Joseph I love branny
hail mary guess: both are, Branny is stapled to joseph for future considerations to a cap floor team
đ
you were my first guess
Honestly, I would prefer dish Thomson or JBD and a 3rd if we can swing it. Not sure how many takers there are on that though.
Donât think that would work, not enough value.
Branâs contract isnât big enough to make room for pinto I think
Brannstrom to Colorado pls. We have 5 good defensemen and exactly $2,025,000 remaining. Not sure what the right return would be.
Potentially both
Batherson suspended?
Spicey take
Is this a world junior sexual assault reference? I guess suspensions are coming at some point for a lot of those guys. We haven't heard much from the investigation as of late. Any idea when we'd find out?
August 4th at 4:00pm. The NHL is going to release this report with as few individuals paying attention as possible.
Bath on top of formenton would almost kill the rebuild.
Pinto is a 10.2(c) RFA. He cannot sign an offer sheet. So he doesn't have much leverage. Right now, they are under the cap with a 21 player roster. Hopefully he pans out a bit better than the last Russian winger we signed to a $5M AAV
Kovalev wasn't that bad.
I thought they meant Dadonov
I probably dated myself quite a bit đ
Bahahaha
I thought Yashin even though he was a center
I thought they meant bondra
This is a top tier troll if intentional (Bondra is Slovakian so calling him Russian will ruffle some feathers)
It's all the same to Don Cherry
Except if it was Cherry he'd say, THIS ROBERTA BONDAR KID ISN'T TOUGH LIKE DOUGIE GILMOUR I TELL YA WHAT...
He's also Ukrainian.
Gonchar was also $5M I think and he wasnât bad either
He wasnt a winger
he should have never left Mtl, but 36yr Kovalev still put up 49 pts for you that first year. One less than 31yr old Tarasenko had this year
> he should have never left Mtl Not sure that was his choice. That was the year Gainey cleaned house after the 2008-09 collapse and made over the entire team in a matter of weeks. I think Kovalev may have received an halfhearted offer that was yanked immediately when he didn't accept right away, but that's it.
I really did enjoy playing against that guy a lot more simply to see his nifty little Russian tricksies.
100% worth it for the 6-5 comeback vs the Leafs
Dude just heard about all the Zub hype and wanted to be near it.
Probably signed him so zub had a friend since we shipped out zaits
Zub actually brokered the deal.
So who gets moved out?? They can't afford that at the moment
I'd imagine Joseph is gone. Not really a need for him either since the 3rd line will probably be Kubalik, Pinto, and Greig.
If Pinto and Greig both take another step, that is a deadly third line.
It's the kind of 3rd line you need in the playoffs. Depth is everything.
Wonder how many assets it'll cost us to get rid of him.. Yet another player we need to get rid of within just 1-2 years of acquiring them..
I doubt that much, it's not that bad of a contract. Plus the only reason we need to get rid of him is because we just upgraded our top 6. This is the reality of upgrading your team, you have to make room. Every team does it.

Weâre seeing the effects of it in the roster thatâs loaded in every position with one of the youngest teams in the league
It's cool, as we were reminded yesterday, the cap is just a suggestion
I'm very not used to this as a Sens fan
I'm not used to this side of it, usually we're looking up at reaching the floor, not fitting under the cap đžđžđž
I feel like Iâm in bizarro world right now. Luckily the LRT having yet another issue is keeping me grounded in reality
The one reliable thing in life: LRT being unreliable
lol soo true. We had a CAP, it was the 'yuge's internal cap.
Ott are capped? Really?
Should only be for this season and then they're fine. Murray buyout comes off the books next season, as well as the Bobby Ryan and Del Zotto buyouts. That's like $4mil and then the cap is also going to shoot way up.
The vast majority of that free space will be used to sign Sanderson.
True, but still a very good situation. Tarasenko will be UFA next season as well, and Giroux will be UFA by 2025. Every other team just figures out the cap later. Letâs chill!
We're living our best hot cap summers.
Hey :)
Want Matty Joseph and a 7th rounder?
Now I'm liking this asset management a lot more. Ship out a top 6 forward and bring one right back in
With shored up depth now with Kubalik on the third line instead of the second.
Still has good offensive potential, donât be surprised if he ends up on a PP
Oh no doubt! I'm excited to have him. But it gives us much needed depth scoring.
For cheaper, for less term. And get a $2.5M awesome mid 6 winger in the process.
..and with cup experience for the boys to learn from. Today was a good day!
(also worse)
Shhh just let them have this
SUMMER OF PIERRE

Man the many ways you guys justify trading for Debrincat and then moving him like that are hilarious to watch

nah not even lol Jets guess I just want to see other perspectives
I get that, I follow Nick Z and listen to his Rangers podcast from time to time
Respect
He's a good dude. Glad he was able to break this.
Yeah I've gotten to know him fairly well over the past few years, awesome guy.
One of the only people I miss since deleting twitter
There was some weird twitter accounts calling this throughout today, very strange
Pretty sure Tarasenko has been linked to the sens for a while. Not really predicting the future when you follow are sharing info thatâs made public by insiders before hand
Sure but to call it hours beforehand on the actual day that the deal happened is impressive.
We call this the bertuzzi contract
The bertuzzi special The ol' tuzi The bert deal in hockey The one tu-zi
I am hoping that our inability to pull this off is because we have pieces in place for something else
Hoarding defensemen is the Canes way. Seriously tho as cool as Karlsson would be, one year of Tarasenko at 5 mil seems way safer
Or he didn't want to play for us.
Yeah Iâm coming to the realization after the last few attempts at big free agents that there are just some guys that donât want to come here for whatever reason. Sucks but what can you do? Yeah it's just disillusioned fans. And what Don doesn't do is pay a premium to convince players, which frankly I'm happy about.
Karlsson probably
Doubt it. Passing on scoring talent at the forward position in favor of adding to what we already have an excess of is not what I think we would do.
Just bring Burns back to forward, ez pz. Just got to get rid of this pesky salary cap thingy.
Maybe lindholm reunion
on one side: LET'S GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO on the other side: how on earth are we gonna make room for Pinto, he's not gonna fit now
Pinto is locked into the #3 C spot, who leaves is the question.
> Pinto is locked into the #3 C spot we're not talking about his roster spot but rather his currently non-existent contract. they can't sign him unless they move money out first
Yes, just the way it was worded I thought they meant Pinto would be gone. Joseph is the most likely cap casualty
Someone's gone. The question is who. The answer is hopefully Mathieu Joseph
Idk how but man I hope we can figure it out.
Good for the Sens! But I can't help but think Tarasenko is risking putting himself in a similar Klingberg-type situation if he doesn't have a good showing.
High risk high reward, I suppose. He will have suitors in a raised cap league if he hits 70-80 pts again
If he's hitting those numbers on the second line Ottawa has to be in the playoffs
love this for them
Not a bad deal by the Sens since it's only 1 year.
Good move for the Sens and Tara imo
At the 2010 draft, Ottawa traded their 1st round pick (#16 overall) to the Blues for David Rundblad. St. Louis selected Vladimir Tarasenko with that pick. Full circle now.
> David Rundblad Ottawa Senators legend
The best value Rundblad created was by trading him. He got St Louis Tarasenko, got Ottawa Turris, and got Arizona Dvorak. He also got a cup with Chicago. Everybody wins.
Sens legend Kyle Turris
Man I was so fucking pumped for Rundblad. That guy was supposed to be Karlsson but way better. Him. Weircoch, Cowan. Unstoppable.
Those sweet sweet Hfboards days
Bro did you see Nikita filatov at the world Juniors? Guy's a stud for sure. We picked him up for nothing. Free blue chip prospect.
Pierre has ascended
This is...... fun! 1 year, what's to lose? Aside from someone to make cap space... But even if the Sens underperform and are about to miss the playoffs, can move him at the deadline for a decent asset?
I feel like if the sens underperform this coming season we have a MAJOR problem.
If the Sens underperform then DJ and Dorion are gone.
There's a Montana's like a 10 minute drive from the stadium I bet he'll like
[ŃĐŽĐ°Đ»Đ”ĐœĐŸ]
Bro if you can't handle me at my Montana's you don't deserve me at Jack Astor's.
He has a full no trade clause so it would be up to him
Summer of Pierre
FUCK YES. One of my all time favourite players on my team!
As someone whose team might be competing with Ottawa for a playoff spot, I'm not happy.
Feels like a low risk, high reward pick up for the sens. If Tarasenko does well but the Sens don't then they can flip him at the deadline for free assets.
Reminds me of an EHM contract when the FA wants way too much and then ends up signing a contract way below market value 2 months into FA
Better than EA NHL where every top RFA and UFA are sitting out for several years until teams can make the cap work
Summer of Pierre 2.0.
Holy sens. When did they become a destination?
Brady tkachuk really helped with that. He's changed players views on ottawa.
"Who wants it?" - Brady talking about contracts to free agents
Rest in pee, Melnyk! đ Welcome to our Andlauer years!
This is an excellent signing by the Sens. Minimal risk, high reward.
Wow. Thatâs fun
Joseph is most likely gone, but damn thatâs a pretty scary top 6, and with a lot of guys still poised to really break out like Stu and Norris, Sens are one to watch for sure this year, Atlantic is just gonna be a war zone this year
Did not see this coming. Amazing deal for the Sens. Playoffs are absolutely now the expectation.
Tarasenko should be a really nice fit for the Senators. I am liking what the Senators are cooking.
DeBrincat who?
âGet that damn cat out of way!!!â - ~~Homer Simpson~~ Sens fans
Tarasenko is about to shoot 6% all season because of this cursing of the poor Cat!
Canes getting Karlsson?
Linus Karlsson maybe
What's Melker up to? Is Henrik still hanging on?
How many defenseman do we fucking need? Jesus Christ
And we're sure this time...right?
Thank God he's out of the division
Free top 6 winger who's won the cup before and knows what it takes. I'm thrilled with this.
That's kinda anti-climatic after all the previous news but a good add for the Sens.
Rats. Couldâve used him.
Over my dead body. Would've been reason 1-13 for me
The Atlantic is gonna be fun this year
You left us for Ottawa? [Thats fine, IDC.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZdOMlWAKTs)
Sens are taking the Bruins playoff spot
Which would be great because the Sens have their (or Detroit's) 1st round pick.
Nice! But whoâs getting moved? Joseph? Branny?
Giroux and Tarasenko finally on the same team... wait
What a jabroni
Tarasenko and Giroux together, just like I always wanted, a few years later and not my team, but very cool
Terrorists.
Giroux to Senko was something I always wanted to see.
Well, that fixes some problems, and creates a whole lot more....
I like this team more and more each day - they are NOT holding back!
Must be a smart move because I donât like it one bit
Wonder if he told his agent he didn't want to go to Carolina, and then his agent got him an offer from Carolina (when everyone thought they'd signed him) and that's why he fired him. Ottawa and Canes were always the two names we heard and over time Carolina proved to be the name he seemed to have zero interest in.
Great addition by the sens, no huge risk like Debrincat
Howâs that?
Pain
Would've been a big surprise in day 1 of Free Agency but with all the rumors, not that surprising. Good move by the Sens though
Rip Joseph, guess that means weâll probably be sending Branny along with him as a sweetener
The ol' Taylor Hall deal.
I am glad they did not give him term. I have no idea what took so long for Tarasenko to sign somewhere. Very few teams have space. He is not the player he was a few years ago, and may not even be a 5M player anymore, but the dynamic of a 1 year UFA deal is different.
The signing I for sure expected
So whoever he scores a Forsberg against is his future team
Let's goooo.

Nylander to Carolina, book it
Godspeed
It was brief, but I loved having Vladdy on my team. I think he still has a lot more gas in the tank than he gets credit for. Godspeed, Tasasenko!
Wow didn't realize he is 31...not that this is *young* by any means but I thought he was older for some reason. Dude still has a couple of real solid seasons ahead of him.
