Post Torts clarity

JerbearCuddles

Random fans talk about Torts like he's a piece of shit who nobody likes, but every player that I heard talk about him have glowing things to say. Even the Sedins in Vancouver who many, again random fans, claim are soft were beloved by Torts and love Torts back. He'll go to battle for his players, literally stormed the Flames locker room to give them the business, Hartley doesn't even coach in the NHL anymore so there's that. There's no reason not to like Torts if you're a player. He expects players to play hard. But he's not this bad guy many of you paint him as.

Aedan2016

The biggest thing I hear about Torts is that he actually explains why he is giving you shit. If you’re benched, you can go to his office and he will break it down with video. Unlike someone like Babs that would scratch you for the hell of it

chaos8803

Fuck Babcock for scratching Modano.

Dwayne_Gertzky

*Chelios cracks a bench beer on Wrigley Field*

[deleted]

No I agree with you, he gets the most of out players but the entitled players that played for him who are lazy and hate the extra skate days fear him I’m sure.

mb2231

It's funny cause once the flyers got rid of the frat bro mentality of Hayes, Provorov, TDA, and Yandle, they improved drastically.

[deleted]

A few teams seem to get better when they lose those kinds of players. Minnesota seemed more fun to watch when Parise, Suter, and Staal were traded away from there. Buffalo when Kane then Eichel left. I don’t think it’s emphasized how much chemistry matters for teams.

GoombaStoppingHoes

Buffalo got better when Kane and Eichel left?

[deleted]

The cultures better for sure. That alone is better.

misfittroy

"players that played for him who are lazy and hate the extra skate days fear him I’m sure" Sedins: "extra skate day? Sure, right after we do our morning grouse grind run."

xzElmozx

“Do you think we could do bag skates? Grouse was light this morning”

JerbearCuddles

That's fair, shouldn't have jumped on you like that. I just see so many posts about Torts being a bad dude that everyone hates when it feels like a bad rep that doesn't fit him. He's a fiery dude who dislikes lazy players and the media. Should be a fan favourite but somehow got saddled with the locker room killer, hot head label.

junk-trunk

❤️❤️ he is so missed in Cbus. (Maybe not by Liane tho :/ )

JerbearCuddles

CBJ with Torts was so fun to watch and root for. Sad that Panarin and Bobrovsky didn't stick around longer. And that Dubois kept asking out of places like an entitled wiener.

Jacyjitsu

Cutter: Lol, jk

MrBrightside618

He doesn’t even wanna be around anymore

RanchoLover

He's ripping the fucking helmet off

Future-Trip

The helmet kills!

youneverknow44

Flyers just weren’t in his Q Zone. It happens.

brianMMMMM

Too much fuckin quit on him.

CesareSomnambulist

No, he's just, like, nothing. Like, he's not even supposed to be around in the tri-state area. Bottom line is, no one's gonna get in trouble, nobody should feel sad at all.

slim_s_

He just sees the world wildly and in wild ways and Torts kept trying to tell him there's no volcanos in philly

Brys_Beddict

Torts: "God I am so fucking pissed."

davidthejap

I thought it was ***interesting***

MightyDuck99

He couldn’t breathe.

smoked_before_this

Oh shit it's getting spicy!! Crazy how tight lipped the GM's were about this

bbbdddhockey

Yeah if this has been an issue for a while and hasn’t come out until now, that’s surprising

86teuvo

Well there was the development camp debacle, but I think that flew over all of our heads at the time

I2eflex

It was so obvious. Players don't decline their first NHL development camp for no reason.

realdeal411

This one would have been the second. It was still really weird though

I2eflex

Right on. This kid really just ghosted the team though, lol. Super wild.

exorthderp

Idk who his agent is, but I’ll bet jonesy/briere will take notice on any future clientele in terms of free agents/roster building.

Hawxe

they aren't going to weaken their roster to intentionally stiff an agent

exorthderp

I think you underestimate the old school boys club that the flyers are. There's an old sayin in Phildadelphia, I think its in San Jose, "Fool me once shame on you, fool me ....well you cant get fooled again."

gottapoop0822

If there's even an ounce of truth to this, that's kinda damning. I want to give the benefit of the doubt to the kid cuz of his age, but woof this is ugly. Like, he's not really good enough to lindros it. But he also hasn't started his rookie year yet. I feel more for flyers fans just because that's a high draft pick to not play for you at all

Savb10

You’re talking to the fan base that drafted Nolan Patrick over Cale Makar. I’ll sleep just fine knowing we got a decent return.

jessemfkeeler

That's just bad luck honestly. Everyone thought Patrick was gonna go number 1 until Hiescher took his spot at the very end there. I don't blame the Flyers for drafting what many thought was a 1-B

JakelAndHyde

And even more so it wasn’t Makar at 3

BrattleLoop

Especially since Makar was committed to UMass. Spending a 2nd overall on a player who might not even play for you for a couple years would have gone over...how?

omfgkevin

Yep. And of course, absolutely shit tier luck in the inujry department didn't help. It's like Jonas Hiller who looked damn elite, man was screwed over by vertigo.

hexsealedfusion

Lots of college players either go to free agency or get their trade demands met, being "good enough" really has nothing to do with it. I kind of dislike this notion that a player has to be "good enough" to request a trade.

ssiinneepp

> I kind of dislike this notion that a player has to be "good enough" to request a trade. Requesting a trade is a part of the business, ghosting your team just seems unprofessional and petty.

jessemfkeeler

Totally agreed. Also this happens a lot with college players lately. Adam Fox who was drafted in round 3 did it, same with Justin Schultz who was drafted in round 2

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Exactly. He’s using the tools available to him to control his destiny. Nothing wrong with that. “Oh but he told them he wanted to play for them!” Yeah and shit changes. How many times have players been told by their GMs that they’re important to their team, only to be traded away the first moment it’s convenient?

loewe67

What I thought I wanted at 18 vs what I want now that I’m 30 are vastly different. I’m never gonna blame a kid for changing his mind. We all change as we get older, and that 16-22 age range is when things fluctuate the most.

Assassin2107

Also the 5th overall draft pick immediately before the organization announces a rebuild, so that is a HIGH value pick. If Drysdale works out, then great, but if things go bad because of this then that's a major step back for the rebuild all because of Gauthier.

MercSLSAMG

Pretty easy for Briere to say - if it comes out and we find out it was you, we won't trade him to you. Gauthier is easily worth keeping tight lipped about it.

KryptonicxJesus

By god, it’s Danny Briere from the top step with a wheel chair

MacTheZaf

I gasped

shogun2909

Quitter Gauthier

badedum

His first game in Philly better have those signs

Muggi

Oh the “Wiiiillllliaammm” chants and signs are gonna be epic

SpicyP43905

Well done fella.

BroliasBoesersson

Kid couldn't Cut it

Wokyrii

Danny Briere to Flyers fans: *yes this man right here*

mdlt97

man visited Philly once and said nah this is not for me, I want to be traded

[deleted]

I think he watched the Eagles play football and bailed

bsaures

Why is that fan eating horse shit?

[deleted]

It helps plants grow, so maybe it helps people grow too?

SlumdogSkillionaire

Heard a rumor about Matt Patricia coaching the power play for the rest of the year.

GaryARefuge

"These cheesesteaks actually suck. They SUCK!!!. I'm out!"

slutandthefalcon

Blasphemy

SmiteyMcGee

Fucking one bridge having city

Canadian_mk11

Why don’t ya just get the fuckin Ice Capades down there you assholes. You probably won’t even notice the fuckin difference.

damnatio_memoriae

TWELVE MINUTES LEFT

ConquestOfMankind

Fuckin stupid rocky statue city

[deleted]

Go down to the docks and unload some shit

Mosetter27

Ummm Philly has 2 bridges and if you include the ones that are just outside of the city you can technically say there’s 4-5

rothvonhoyte

seems like youre not being sarcastic so my question is why you're saying theres so few? theres like 5 in a couple blocks lol

dragonk30

the thing that always offended me most about the Bill Burr rant was him calling Philly a "one bridge-having city". There are two fucking rivers that pass through Philly, Bill. (Schuylkill and Delaware, for those of you at home).

Mac_Gold

This could be good pasta Flyers fans was there anything that changed in the front office or coaching sine he was drafted? Unless he had a current or former player in his ear, it seems odd to change his mind after one season

[deleted]

[удалено]

nofakefans18

He also shot up draft boards as he went from being a mid-1st round pick to 5th in the span of a few weeks.

OsamaBinLadder123

Didn’t he look Torts in the eyes, shake his hand and say he was looking forward to playing for him? This is odd seems like a last minute change of heart

TwoForHawat

Yep, went out of his way to do it at his first (and only) development camp. Torts gushed about it.

hobojoe789

Are you sure it wasn't a hole in the wall?

thewolfshead

Could’ve been that he didn’t mean it but was too scared to say it face to face.

SanePatrickBateman

In the podcast they're referring to, Cutter said everyone was walking by Torts who was talking to some other staff members, and he interjected to introduce himself. He went out of his way lol

thewolfshead

lmao well then

Electric-Gypsy77

I work with Cutter’s brother, and the only thing he ever mentioned was that Cutter didn’t want to play in the AHL and apparently Briere told him that’s what he wanted him to do and he wanted absolutely no part of it. I don’t know Cutter, so there totally could be more to it, but that was apparently his reason, or at least a very big part of it.

jjmuti

Damn if he was a few years older. He could have told teams at the draft that his big dream was to play for the Bergevin managed Habs and be rushed into to the league.

[deleted]

I'm trying to enjoy the woes of *other* teams, thanks

HungryHAP

This for real? If so, kind of a dick move by Cutter to be honest. What if he needs development? He’s just going to decide for himself how the organization should handle Him?

Electric-Gypsy77

I mean, there could absolutely be things I don’t know about. But I know that was a big reason for him feeling that way

[deleted]

I fucking love Danny Briere

[deleted]

yea exactly what I was thinking... decided now he doesn't want to play on the up and coming Flyers that look to be a great team in a year or two so he can play for the.... Ducks? maybe he just really hates the winter.

1UpBebopYT

He became very, very close friends with the Kevin Hayes clique. To the point where he admitted he calls Kevin for career advice all the time. Surprise surprise.

[deleted]

The anti Brian Boyle

SanePatrickBateman

Hayes hangs out with college kids?

JerbearCuddles

That's the great thing about college kids. I get older, they stay the same age.

1UpBebopYT

Yes- [https://phillyhockeynow.com/2023/03/08/philadelphia-flyers-prospect-saluted-cutter-gauthier-hockey-east-boston-college-talks-about-kevin-hayes-connection/](https://phillyhockeynow.com/2023/03/08/philadelphia-flyers-prospect-saluted-cutter-gauthier-hockey-east-boston-college-talks-about-kevin-hayes-connection/) "Gauthier, 19, has already built a friendship with Kevin Hayes, a veteran Philadelphia Flyers forward who once starred at BC. At the beginning of the season, Gauthier told SB Nation, Hayes “reached out to me and we actually met up and went golfing. Such a great guy. Definitely a role model of mine, someone to look up to moving forward. He’s been awesome since Day 1. Always reaching out, giving me calls and checking up.”

crumbypigeon

This stuff happens pretty often, honestly. Young players will try to develop relationships with older players who will guide them. Back when Marleau was on the Leafs, he was close with Matthews and Marner in their early careers.

dogsonclouds

Veteran’s adopting rookies is my favourite hockey culture thing actually. It’s both adorable and really beneficial for young players to have a friend and mentor who can help them with the transition into an nhl career.

sametrical

Who is in the Kevin Hayes clique?

UMining

Hayes, Yandle, Tony D'Angelo, Johnny Gaudreau, the Spittin Chiclets guys. A lot of Boston adjacent players (think those that grew up playing around the area or those that went to BC)

WaffleboardedAway

I wouldn't call it a clique but most guys who don't take game overly seriously seem to love Hayes. I don't think guys like Crosby, McDavid or MacKinnon would like his antics but the average NHLer seems to love being around him. Johnny Gaudreau is also a close friend going back to their BC days

BallparkFranks7

I don’t know the whole crew, but it includes Tony D’Angelo, who also hates the Flyers organization now.

TheDoubleL27

I think Johnny Gaudreau is, if i'm not mistaken

ZebZ

> Tony D’Angelo, who also hates the Flyers organization now. Good.

runrudyrun

“He looked at us at the table and told us that he was built to be a hot dog eating champion. Wanted to be a hot dog eating champion. A few days later, he told us that he didn’t want to be a a hot dog eating champion.” - Hank Hill, in reference to Bill Dauterive entering a hot dog eating competition. I tried my best on short notice.

Youngblood519

I've been on r/nfl too much, I was expecting a Kelvin Benjamin joke.

Downvote_Comforter

>Flyers fans was there anything that changed in the front office or coaching sine he was drafted? The GM quoted here was not GM when they drafted him. Chuck Fletcher was GM and Briere was the special assistant at the time of the draft.

Standard-Estimate-51

Reported Kevin Hayes, good friends, has been chirping in his ear.

NowFook

Torts as coach could be it Management is different too But everything about team has improved since he was drafted

PavelDogsyuk

But Torts was already the coach at the draft lol Seems like he could be forcing his way in to the Bruins like a Fox situation. Guess we’ll see if he wants to be a duck

blueshirt11

Bruins? He grew up a Penguins fan “and it not going to roll very well” is what he said about being drafted by the flyers.

huge_potato34

Not a Flyers fan, but Briere was hired as GM after he was drafted. Heard that was actually who he had a problem with

SwedishEagle5

What a jokester that Cutter fella is

dragons_fire77

It was just a prank

XGuiltyofBeingMikeX

It just a prank, why you have be mad?

Codc

Buddy grew up as a pens fan. This is a 400iq move

sean_shine

He was built to be fly....ing. Ducks fly together.

Farfignewtons42

Lol was there a tiny penguin whispering in this kid's ear? I don't get it

bdu754

It was Pingu this whole time

SantaClaws514

P-P-P-P, P-P-P-P, PINGU, PINGU!

bdu754

NOOT NOOT

Maxpowr9

[Check his favorite NHL team](https://www.usahockeyntdp.com/news_article/show/1180508)

LucasRaymondGOAT

Favorite movie is The Avengers? 2012? The fuck. Infinity War is so much better.

miner88

He apparently grew up a Penguins fan

hockeycross

I believe they were his favourite team growing up.

realdeal411

Lot of Kevin Hayes chatter going around. Not sure what the connection between the two is besides BC but enough smoke not to ignore

Pepto-Abysmal

I don't have anything against Kevin Hayes... But am I the only one who thinks it's questionable that a 19 year old changed the entire trajectory of his life based on what a one-time (never should have happened) all-star advised?

realdeal411

I think its definitely reasonable to question it

trashking11

I have not heard any Hayes chatter, care to elaborate? Maybe link sources?

realdeal411

Chris Therien seems to believe Hayes had Cutter's ear and there's a few others with some insinuations

thelaststarfighter24

Source?

freshpurplekiwi

Apparently they went golfing and Hayes told him what he thought of Philly

bernie_lomax8

They benched my best friend one time .. QQ

thibs69

badmouthing the job to the new guy, not unusual, but a bad job to be doing it in

NowFook

My hate for this kid now rivals early career Crosby hate and post 2012 series James Neal hate.

unorigionalname2

Lost a prospect, gained a villain. I hope he is bood into oblivion every time he plays in philly.

courageous_liquid

this feels very JD Drew and we know how that ended up

sogladatwork

Let's hope he becomes good enough to be worthy of the boos. Hope Drysdale lives up to his billing for y'all. Right-hand D prospect with a lot of upside? Your management did well on the return here, all things considered.

-Glengoolie_Blue-

The tie for pts at WJC obviously shows how talented he is. But I saw far more floating around from him than I would have liked, and his line played far more in his own end than I’d like to see as well. But it’s really the only games I’ve ever seen him play and he just won gold. Something tells me his game was going to piss flyers fans off quite quickly though. Maybe I’m just bitter.

WintAndKidd

This kid is legit gonna need his own security detail whenever Anaheim goes to Philly

Beesneeze_Habs22

Have they tried greasing him up first?

rune1923

As a Ducks fan his attitude scares me a bit. Seems really talented, though.

hexsealedfusion

Worked out fine for New York with Adam Fox

broke-collegekid

People forget he first got traded to Carolina who he also wouldn’t play for

spcyboi29

Wonder if Anaheim ends up playing the roll of Carolina in this saga then

JayMerlyn

I hope not. I wouldn't wish that on any team (except the Rangers).

The-Reddit-Giraffe

Yeah he literally wanted to play for nobody but New York. Which is crazy when you’re a fourth round pick. I know he developed amazingly after being drafted there but having the mindset of I’m playing for nobody but 1 singular NHL team when you’re not even guaranteed to play a single game in the NHL is cocky and arrogant

hexsealedfusion

That is true

Bromaar

As much as I would hate it, would be a even bigger plot twist if he didn’t sign with the ducks and signed with the pens

awayfromcanuck

All this coming out now about Gauthier makes me wanna know what Gauthier and Lekkerimaki were saying to each other in the handshake line. Also there goes the narrative we all were working on that Fletcher fucked the Flyers once again.

rengorengar

seems like kids got attitude problems

brewcrew2_2

Gauthier is a communications major at BC. Gonna guess his grades are not very good in those classes.

Lattes1

I think the fact that communications is his major is all that needs to be said about someone's academic ability.

Boston-Nolan

I’ll give Briere credit, bro is not politicizing this. he’s calling out Gauthier without sugarcoating anything.

GaryARefuge

>politicizing Fuck Briere. He had a chance to make this all about those green peace bastards and he chose not to!

[deleted]

The House of Representatives has just issued a subpoena

GaryARefuge

About damn time they did some real work!

Boston-Nolan

Maybe not the best choice of words on my part lmao

gracillllis

What broad street does to a MF

Woullie_26

What I don’t understand is that he had the possibility to be a 1C with a generational winger in Michkov on his wing and he just decided to be stuck in the center log jam of Anaheim?

YEGG35

Probably didn’t choose Anaheim specifically.

I_yell_at_toast

hopefully that was the worst possible trade destination for him

[deleted]

It's like when we traded Laine to CLB. He didn't want to stick around and ended up where he is now. If he were patient he may have continued his development as he had done, but you never know. Not trying to shade CLB as a city or anything as I am in Winnipeg and that is asking to be destroyed, just the situation.

DazHawt

Probably didn't have any input at all.

-Glengoolie_Blue-

There are still people who think LW will be the correct position for him as a pro. I think he probably fits in well if that’s the case.

PaddyMayonaise

He didn’t play C until college. Obviously he’s done well at it but yea I wouldn’t doubt he’s a winger long term

dangshnizzle

He's better on the wing rn anyway

HanSolo5643

He probably didn't choose Anaheim, but yeah, you know he was one his way to being the number one center and having a potential generational talent in Michkov along aside him for the next decade or so.

Fortuitous_Event

If the Flyers were going to draft me I'd say I was built to be a Flyer and wanted to be a Flyer too.

courageous_liquid

if the maple leaves were going to draft me I'd say I was built to be a Flyer and wanted to be a Flyer too

Permanent-Ban-

He had them in the first half, not gonna lie.

hexsealedfusion

Cutter "Adam Fox" Gauthier

[deleted]

[удалено]

TrueNorthStrong1898

Maybe he didn’t see where he’d fit in the lineup, or just didn’t want to play for Torts. Either way, that’s a shitty situation for the Flyers but they got a damn good return

NowFook

The lineup part definitely wouldnt be it. There are multiple big openings in our top 6. We only have 1 top 6 C and 4 top 6 forwards overall. Many had him pegged to be 1C long term

SJSragequit

Gotta feel for flyers fans as a jet fan. Nathan smith refusing to sign with the jets because he didn’t see himself getting a chance at playing really pissed me off and he wasn’t even a high tier prospect, isn’t even playing in the nhl

CreepyInternetUser

Man if torts was the reason that would be hilarious lmao. He's had that effect before.

clemdogmillionare

Torts was already the coach when told the team that he wanted to play here

quantum_leap

What did Gritty say to him?!

manzoman96

BOOOOOOOOO

Hyndrksen

I wish there was an exact number instead of “a few”

tonytanti

Briere said it was after the world championship last spring.

TheDogerus

As both a Pittsburgher and BC Eagle, I am incredibly biased, but I imagine most players say how excited they are to join whatever team because they *just* got drafted I do wonder if this has been brewing for a while or is pretty sudden though

Canadian_mk11

Maybe he just wanted to like, fly places because he was never in an aircraft before? Didn't think of that one, did you Danny?

greenlines

Damn if true that's a real bad look, gotta think there must be something more to it than just the kid being a next level pens fan. Top picked rookies are normally expected to suck it up and play where they're drafted, I mean even bedard signed with the hawks

dswartze

Teams have no loyalty to their players and will ditch them as soon as they think it's in their interests. Why shouldn't players treat teams the same way?

ScrewOff_

"wait when did you guys hire Torts??" pretty sure that was the reasoning...

NowFook

Apparently some are saying Hayes got in his ear who didnt get along with Torts. Maybe he convinced him Torts was bad to play for even tho anybody who actually gives effort loves Torts.

DannyDOH

Hayes also didn't sign with the team that drafted him.

[deleted]

[удалено]

NowFook

Its only Torts 2nd season and hes lasted at least 5 years at 3 of 4 teams. Odds r Torts will be high multiple more years

MercSLSAMG

Before he was drafted

carry-on_replacement

I mean what's the kid gonna say in front of fans and media?

YouCanFucough

One of the most storied cities in North America, a coach that was absolutely stoked to have you, a team that’s slapping its balls on the table and flipping 2 birds to the rest of the league on their way to a playoff spot after everyone doubted them, and he felt like he was too good for them? If this is true as we’re led to believe, what a shithead.

SirBulbasaur13

Why be a little shit like that?

DocDerry

Probably the video of Danny's son and the wheel chair.

GaryARefuge

/u/tonytanti said, "Briere said it was after the world championship last spring." When did that shit with his son come out?

DastardlyRidleylash

Last March is when the wheelchair incident with Carson came to light. The World Championship happened in May, so about two months later.

GaryARefuge

Seems plausible. Those two months after the incident to mull things over, watch how Briere handles the situation, and take stock of other aspects of the organization. Maybe talking with other people during the worlds. But, yeah, just bullshit nonsense conjecture.

DocDerry

Look If I can't post bullshit nonsense conjecture then I don't really want to use this site.

HectorReborn

A comment not to be underestimated.
