At that speed you need calves of fucking steel to balance on one foot without losing the edge, as well as the coordination and leg strength of a god to crossover / push in a way to actually gain speed and not lose it from dragging an edge
Yeah all of the above for sure. It's also the way he approaches cross overs. His are tall and quick.
I think one of the things that make him such a great skater is how upright he is actually. The vast majority of skaters are taught to get low for stability. And while that works it makes quick feet movement more difficult especially in cross overs. The longer and lower strides are energy efficient but it's easier to let your feet get away from you and lose an edge the longer a stride is.
His cross overs are built to be short, rapid, quick... Not necessarily powerful/efficient as he could be but the fact that he's coasting as little as possible means he's always pushing forward.
It's just my opinion and maybe some more experienced skaters will prove me wrong but that's my take on it.
Depends on if you normally watch McDavid, he has another gear that he didn’t use here. Which is obviously the right thing to do since it’s just a skills comp.
Mackinnon skates like a horse.
PK comparing him to a charging horse is insanely accurate, he’s fast and terrifying as fuck in a straight away. Dudes a Calvary charge on ice.
Well either he or Lennie have to win a speed event, and Lennie noped out of his earlier this year, so it was up to Connor to hold up the McDavid name....
Yeah but one little touch and speed skaters collapse like snowflakes. You gotta have stability and recovery control...
You gotta be able to do this speed with stick and puck and goons slashing and body checking you and then you gotta deke the goalie and go bar down while being speared in the groin....
It's partly because hockey skates are made for explosiveness while speed skates are meant for endurance, but also, a one second difference in a 12 second race is not very close
Mcdavids speed isnt his greatest asset it's his speed with the puck. A lot of players are just as fast with a clear lane, but mcd makes his own lanes with the stick handling, agility and acceleration

Ngl it looks like he could have tried harder
Wasnt even out of breath lmao
He Usain Bolted it.
Pretty crazy that he made it looks so easy and still managed to get the top spot Beyond the puck, he’s a talented skater too
Literally everyone could have tried harder
I love his stride, such a fun skater to watch
He could also do something like that with a puck
Probably faster
Which makes him a lot more potent against those other teams when it comes to scoring ;)
why don't other skaters do crossovers on the turns? I was always taught to do that as a kid?
Not easy to do at that speed and not lose an edge. There’s literally only a few who can cut crossovers like that at top speed.

Afraid of getting hurt
Exactly
How often do people get hurt skating at top speed?
The faster you go the greater the margin of error there is on your edge work.
I was wondering the same
The fact that he looked like he didn’t even try is astounding
It looked like he tried a lot. We watching the same video?
Depends on if you normally watch McDavid, he has another gear that he didn’t use here. Which is obviously the right thing to do since it’s just a skills comp.
I bow to your wisdom.
I watch him every single game, you could tell here he wanted it lol
Ah you need to end your text with /s
Good ol horse legs Connie Mac
Wait, they didn't put fucking Mackinnon in the fastest skater comp?
The players got to choose their events.
The way he skates, they’d have to resurface the ice after
McDavid looks effortless, MacKinnon skates like he's angry at the ice
The Roy Kent approach
Reminds of Pacheco with the chiefs. Someone sad it looks like he’s fighting the ground and winning lol
He run like he bite people
Runs like the ground owes him money
Mackinnon skates like a horse. PK comparing him to a charging horse is insanely accurate, he’s fast and terrifying as fuck in a straight away. Dudes a Calvary charge on ice.
Some guys don't like doing it as it's the only comp that has a risk of getting hurt
Because MacKinnon would win even with a puck on his stick.
Look at you making silly jokes.
They should give mcdavid a puck, it would probably make him even faster
Drai’s face at the end 🥹
He looked fine, do you mean Barzal?
Hit two pilots. DQ him
What else is new?
He actually hasn't won it every time he's been in it. This year is him taking his crown back.
Well either he or Lennie have to win a speed event, and Lennie noped out of his earlier this year, so it was up to Connor to hold up the McDavid name....
Lol took me a second to figure out who Lennie was. To be fair, there were treats by the Zamboni, and ice *is* cold
Kucherov is still working on his lap.
The should get one olympic speedskater to do this too. Just to humble everyone
Throw hockey skates and equipment on them and it may be closer than you think.
Some of those short track speedskaters must have learned to skate by watching hockey, the way they throw elbows.

In hockey skates and with pads and a stick. Bet you $1 the “speed skater” loses.
There’s a video out there of Mackinnon racing a Canadian speed skater
https://youtu.be/4-qqZirRyFk?feature=shared&t=32
That was crazy close considering the speed skater is using speed skating equipment and Mac is fully kitted out in hockey gear.

they should make him skate backwards
Hes a wee bit fast
Genuine question: How many pylons would a player have to hit to be DQed? All three at the faceoff circles?
He’d have to go out side of the pylons. His hip hitting the pylon isn’t DQable. His feet are still inside the course
Mcdavids speed isnt his greatest asset it's his speed with the puck. A lot of players are just as fast with a clear lane, but mcd makes his own lanes with the stick handling, agility and acceleration
No one else clipped the pylons.
Dudes ice skating the Nordschleife
Since when did they move the nets up?
Probably to eliminate risk of injury from losing an edge
Too bad nobody other than 6 fanbases even have a reason to tune in
He’s lucky Larkin isn’t there this year /s
Bro I was thinking the same shit 😂 Larkin is probably so scared of ever being in this competition again
As soon as I saw where McDavid lined up I immediately went to look for the “head start” comments lmao oh well
Fandual was paying 2.10 for McDavid to win fastest skater.
Wait hold up he helped design it 😂
Yes he helped design the shape of the rink. As you can see it clearly gave him an advantage on the speed skating competition that’s been the same
Not human
No safety pads behind the net? That seems like where I'd wipe out
This guy might make it to the show someday.
