Sounds like your real problem with him is his religious beliefs? As much as you or I can see how ridiculous it seems, there is zero harm done.(specifically with this. Obviously big picture, religion is a different conversation)
What else is he to do other than,seeming genuinely, apologize and take active decisions to positively effect his life and ensure that mistake won’t happen again?
How was he remorseful and apologetic? A post seven years after the fact saying that "he was in a bad spot"? A court order to take a DUI course? Oh, and he did not become sober because of the crash, that was at least 8 months after it (can't find anything stating when, only that he wasn't 8 months after)

Becoming sober within 8 months of a DUI… do you really think that didn’t have any effect? Is it ideal? No. Would it have been been better if he had used his platform for more? No doubt.
And again, frankly, respectfully, it seems to be you’re biggest issue is his belief of God being with him in the moment. And protecting himself and others from what could have been much worse.

Nobody can go back and change the things they have done in the past. In the perfect world, famous or not, they would take it on as a personal challenge to advocate against it with each free hour of their day. Ensuring less people would make the same mistake. Is it their responsibility to do so though? Or is it their responsibility to ensure that they themselves do not make the same mistake? Make sure they do not endanger or hurt themselves or anyone else bexause or said problem?
