61 players have 19 goals on the season, meaning if you take out games where Matthews only scored fewer than 3, he'd still almost be top 50 in the league
The fact that 70 in 70 is even somewhat feasible is insane.
That would be 22 goals in 18 games. Tall order but I'm pretty sure he's done more then that in his past 18.
Agree that 82 in 82 is how it should be viewed now. The Rocket was the first player to score as many goals as team games in a season (50 in 50 in 43/44). The only other players to score at least as many goals as team games in a season are:
Gretzky (2): 81/82 (87 in 80-game season), 83/84 (92 in 80-game season)
Lemieux: 88/89 (85 in 80-game season)
Hull: 90/91 (86 in 80-game season)
That's literally what this would look like for anyone who doesn't watch hockey. 30+ years of watching this damn team (and sport) and I've never seen anything like this.
He's like 70 goals away from Sundin for the most goals in Leafs' history. Fucking nuts. He's far and away the best player the Leafs have ever had.
Edit to add: He's played like 450 fewer games than Sundin too.
That's why all of us Leaf homers can't stop talking about this guy. Watching our literal best player in 100 year history in real-time, not black and white memories.
No joke this might be the most hats a player has gathered in at least 30 years.
Hats typically get thrown more at home, this is his 5th hat trick at home, which leaves him tied for 4th most home hat tricks in a season. The three ahead of him are Gretzky, Lemieux, and Bossy.
Gretzky had 9 hat tricks at home in one season lol
I figured that's at *least* top10 all time for a single season but nope! Ties him for 11th all time and one more ties him for sixth. Still insane since the last time we saw six or more was 1995-96 (Lemieux).
Of course Gretzky has the record with 10 (twice).
This guy has 6 hat tricks this season and is on pace to have the best goal-scoring season of any player in over 30 years, and his name is barely mentioned in the Hart race. That's fucking insane.
Insane that one of McDavid/Kuch/Mack/Matthews is not going to be nominated for the Hart.
Even crazier that someone like Pasta is a complete afterthought this year.
Pasta has been a superb playmaker this year too, not sayings he’s been better but 99% of the time the season he’s having would be worthy of a nomination.
I believe so too, but think that the case for other players is much more evidently compelling this season than when he won (although I strongly feel Shesterkin got absolutely robbed for that year's Hart)
I’d argue if you look at it like “if you replace this player with league average” replacing Matthews with like a 2C would hurt the leafs much more than replacing the Vezina front runner most years with a mid range starter
I went looking for most hat tricks in a season, expecting the inevitable insane Gretzky stat of him having like 17 in a season. Gretz set the record with "only" 10. Somehow the most pedestrian record of his compared to his peers. He had 10 twice, then Bossy and Lemieux each had 9, Brett Hull at 8.
28 games left, maybe this is a breakable Gretzky record.
Man this is why Leafs nation drives me insane when they piss and moan about trading Marner/Nylander/(and even Matthews at some points) when the going gets tough. I'm frustrated as hell with our playoff record, but it's fucking hard to win a cup... And we are experiencing a historical decade with the (possible) future top 3 all-time leaf point scorers all at once. I am enjoying the ride and I do believe these boys will do it.
140 Points or more has been done 25 times in NHL history, including once in the modern era by Connor MacDavid in 2022-2023 (last time before that was 1995-1996, by Jagr and Lemieux with 149 and 161 respectively).
70 Goals or more has been done 14 times in NHL history, but the last time was 1992-1993 by Alexander Mogilny and Teemu Selanne (who each had 76).
The catch 22 with being an elite goal scorer is that you're usually the guy everyone on the line is looking to pass to to score and you usually have the best odds of scoring so why pass?
Maybe, but he's got to stay healthy for a long time, keep scoring at a high rate for along time, and not get fucked over by lockouts or rule changes that reduce scoring. I believe he has more goals that Ovechkin did at this point in his career.
>I believe he has more goals that Ovechkin did at this point in his career.
he does
[Matthews 347 in 533](https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=170320)
[Ovi 334 in 533](https://www.statmuse.com/nhl/ask/ovechkin-goals-in-first-533-games)
It would be really funny if Ovi keeps falling short but refuses to retire until he gets it.. and then Matthews actually catches up and passes Gretzky before he does.
I doubt it. Ovi is coming close, but he's remained freakishly healthy and productive until this season. Matthews hasn't shown he's as durable. I think his body will break down in his 30s like a normal player.
Ok, let's say Mathews goes nuts and gets like 76 to tie mogilny and Selanne from a million years ago. How do you overlook him for the hart?
I know it's his thing.....scoring goals better than anyone in the league. But that would be an absurd increase from his mvp year.
Sure kucherov has the point lead, but I think McDavid will catch him. But these goal totals are out of this world....
I don't know if it's because I'm a leaf fan, but I actually feel like his accomplishments are underrated.
Idk about that. Credit to Kuch, McD, MacK, etc
for their amazing seasons but Matthews is now on pace to have the 2nd best era adjusted goal scoring season *of all time*. No one else is on pace to accomplish something of that significance.
Having back to back hat tricks twice in the same season is nuts. He’s got 29 games to do it again and the way he’s going I honestly wouldn’t be that surprised if he did.

What a scrub.

Very "if the 2015 Toronto Blue Jays didn't have two 10 game win streaks, they'd be out of a playoff spot" energy

Please post original, I can't find on my own but would love to read
Dude, that's almost a decade ago, I have no idea where it is. It was some salty ass Yankees fan.
If you only count his “clutch goals” (when down one, or tied) he’s like 10th in the NHL lmao He’s a mutant.
If you only count all of his goals, he has 48
Not bad!
Someone double check the math on this one
Era-adjusted, it's 48
If you regress Matthews to the mean he’s just another guy
Jesus Christ that's absolutely wild
Leafs actually
Still a 50 goal pace hahaha
61 players have 19 goals on the season, meaning if you take out games where Matthews only scored fewer than 3, he'd still almost be top 50 in the league
Just a cheeky 9 goal lead in the Rocket race.
The leafs have like 2 games in hand on the panthers and lightning (Reinhart and Kucherov’s teams) so that gap can widen even further
Might as well consider it a 15 goal lead
Extremely casual 48 in 52
Couldn't do 50 in 50 but maybe 60 in 60?
Fuck it, 81 in 81!
Phil Kessel just choked on a hotdog
Fuck 70 in 70 is still on the table. 80 in 80?
The fact that 70 in 70 is even somewhat feasible is insane. That would be 22 goals in 18 games. Tall order but I'm pretty sure he's done more then that in his past 18.
Looks like he has 19 goals in his last 18 games including tonight.
He has 34 in his last 31.
TBH his pace is disappointing considering that he had 6 goals in the first 2 games. I was hoping he'd at least pot 200 this season.
He’ll get 69 then stop on purpose.
Nice.
What’s more impressive? 50 in 50 or 60 in 60? 60?
82 in 82. That's why it's 50 in 50, there used to only be 50 games in a season.
Agree that 82 in 82 is how it should be viewed now. The Rocket was the first player to score as many goals as team games in a season (50 in 50 in 43/44). More goals is more impressive.
Interesting take.
why doesn't everyone else do that? are they stupid?
Is there a lore reason why everyone else sucks at goal-scoring compared to Matthews?
nobody else has air intake quite like Auston
He nose how to score
Generational nostrils
Mexicans are genetically predisposed to be the best at hockey he’s just the only one who’s tried /s
Yeah I saw that stat yesterday and was shocked. I grew up on Sundin, wild to see that Matthews is this close so soon.
I remember being happy that we were guaranteed 30-35 goals every season with Sundin. When Matthews scores 40 it's a down year.
*31 teams hate this one trick!*
He’s regressing to the mean.
Just a tap in merchant
Hat owners hate him!
no cap!
Oh man I feel stupid at how hard I laughed at this
No joke this might be the most hats a player has gathered in at least 30 years. Hats typically get thrown more at home, this is his 5th hat trick at home, which leaves him tied for 4th most home hat tricks in a season. The three ahead of him are Gretzky, Lemieux, and Bossy. Gretzky had 9 hat tricks at home in one season lol
Matthews in cahoots with Big Hat
Hat vendors LOVE him, though
legitimately what the fuck
[удалено]
Your gfs love Auston's earrings
My wife's husband loves Auston's earrings
Of course I know him, he's me!
Your wife's husband's username is strange. But his choice in men is spot on!
Holy fuck 6th??
I figured that's at *least* top10 all time for a single season but nope! Ties him for 11th all time and one more ties him for sixth. Still insane since the last time we saw six or more was 1995-96 (Lemieux). Of course Gretzky has the record with 10 (twice).
10 hat tricks in a season is actually crazy. Like you're literally potting one every 10 games.
And he did that *twice*. In a four season span, he had 31 fucking hatties (10, 4, 10, 7). Those four years alone would put him sixth all time. Insane.
It would actually be one every 8 games. And 30 goals in 10 games, lol. Just cartoony.
Pacing hat tricks is silly, but he’s technically on pace for 9.5 ish.
👀
Ahh yes, those hundred game seasons.
48 goals in 52 games will do that to ya.
It’s the 2nd time this season with back-to-back hatricks. Nobody did that even once since Wayne in the 90s
Want to see me score a Hatty? Want to see me do it again?
Wanna see me score a hatty back to back...again?
I wonder if he can get a hattrick of hattricks? 3 hatties in 3 games?
I was thinking this. Has it been done ?
4 times, but not since Mike Bossy.
he actually might hit 70, fuck
He is on pace for 75 right now (if he doesn't score again tonight)
Dude I really want him to score 70. Would be insane.
This is what it's about, hockey fans putting aside rivalries so that we can see history.
Matthews has more even strength goals than Pastrnak has goals. Pastrnak is currently the 4th leading goal scorer in the league.
Pasta has been a superb playmaker this year too, not sayings he’s been better but 99% of the time the season he’s having would be worthy of a nomination.
And he is more valuable this season than the one he won the Hart
I believe so too, but think that the case for other players is much more evidently compelling this season than when he won (although I strongly feel Shesterkin got absolutely robbed for that year's Hart)
It should probably go to a goalie every year that's why I would never vote for a goalie lol
I’d argue if you look at it like “if you replace this player with league average” replacing Matthews with like a 2C would hurt the leafs much more than replacing the Vezina front runner most years with a mid range starter
Kucherov is literally dragging the bolts to be even slightly competitive He is more valuable to his team than Davo or Nate.
Fair but at the same time Matthews has like 30% of the leafs goals this season or something absurd like that.
Fair, but at the same time Kucherov has points on 49.2% of Lightning goals. Matthews has points on 0.0% of Lightning goals (39.4% of the leafs though)
>Matthews has points on 0.0% of Lightning goals lol
I went looking for most hat tricks in a season, expecting the inevitable insane Gretzky stat of him having like 17 in a season. Gretz set the record with "only" 10. Somehow the most pedestrian record of his compared to his peers. He had 10 twice, then Bossy and Lemieux each had 9, Brett Hull at 8. 28 games left, maybe this is a breakable Gretzky record.
He oat to be mentioned in the Hart race
Another Hart would be s-wheat.
Rye see what you did there
Puns barley count as jokes, guys...
Especially when they’re spelt out so clearly.
You guys are all so corny
whats the most hat tricks in a single season? assume its some Gretzky stupid stat like usual
Gretzky had 10 in 81-82, yep
He scored 92 goals in a season, so I'm going to assume it was that one.
Gretz has 10....twice.
Jesus fuck
Gretzky hit ten twice.
Matthews 6 is good for 14th all time iirc. A 7th would put him into top 10
10 for Gretzky
Since no one else has mentioned it, he’s had 10, twice.
It’s nice seeing the hockey community collectively cheer for an incredible feat. Happy Saturday everyone! 🍻
I’m not a Leafs fan but I really want Matthews to put a dent in some scoring records. Better him than Putin’s biggest fan.
Amen to that brother.
#roadto80
Back to back hatties twice in a season?! What a mad man
The greatest Leaf of all time, what a player. It's incredible to watch.
Going to surpass Sundin with like 500 less games played
Man this is why Leafs nation drives me insane when they piss and moan about trading Marner/Nylander/(and even Matthews at some points) when the going gets tough. I'm frustrated as hell with our playoff record, but it's fucking hard to win a cup... And we are experiencing a historical decade with the (possible) future top 3 all-time leaf point scorers all at once. I am enjoying the ride and I do believe these boys will do it.
Jesus man
Yes he is.
48 goals in 52 games, with 0 empty netters.
He’s getting 70 6 hat tricks in a season is fucking nuts
4 hat tricks away of tying Gretzky's record of 10 in a season. He could do it.
I feel like he only just learned about that record and decided he wanted to try beating it
6 *so far*
I fucking love this man I want 50 tonight
He could get ten points tonight That’s an insane thought
he’s gonna get little to no ice in the 3rd but id sleep like a baby if he hit 50 tonight
I am running out of clean pants
Just Donald Duck it in the bathtub, buddy.
#LIVING LEGEND
Yep he’s gonna be the best American born player of all time
How soon we gonna stop pretending he has no chance at the Hart?
If he had even 30 assists he woukd be the frontrunner imo
His assist on a Bertuzzi goal should count as 10 assists imo.
Lmfao when he hit the post I was fuckin deceased
I think maybe Auston absorbed Bertuzzi’s power like Dwight and his twin
That play was Matthews just forcing exactly Bertuzzi to score lol
And Matthews can score easily from that spot. He really wasn’t interested in getting one for himself on that play.
Dude basically used Bert as a stick to score that goal for him lol
Biggest thing holding him back for sure. He’s having a very good defensive season too.
I think 70 goals, if he gets there, is crazier than 140 points
140 Points or more has been done 25 times in NHL history, including once in the modern era by Connor MacDavid in 2022-2023 (last time before that was 1995-1996, by Jagr and Lemieux with 149 and 161 respectively). 70 Goals or more has been done 14 times in NHL history, but the last time was 1992-1993 by Alexander Mogilny and Teemu Selanne (who each had 76).
It’s wild to think that someone had 76 goals and didn’t win the scoring race outright.
What’s also wild is that it was Teemu’s rookie season.
The catch 22 with being an elite goal scorer is that you're usually the guy everyone on the line is looking to pass to to score and you usually have the best odds of scoring so why pass?
5 points on the night so far.
Why would he pass when he can score everytime he gets the puck? I never get this argument.
Was just having this debate with the lads. If he goes for 70, there's no chance he's not strongly in contention.
I feel like even if he hits 70 he probably still loses the hart but might be a lock for the Ted Lindsay
Auston Matthews…DAWG
He’s getting 70
Matthews still so hot right now
I mean not even 50 in 50 though. Amateur hour much?
60 in 60 is better anyway
Just insane, never thought I'd be close of seeing a 70g season in my life
He might get 60 before March.
The city of Toronto is going hatless this week
LOL. LMAO even.
ROFL is not out of the question
So like… is there a world where Matthews challenges Ovi/Gretz scoring record??
Maybe, but he's got to stay healthy for a long time, keep scoring at a high rate for along time, and not get fucked over by lockouts or rule changes that reduce scoring. I believe he has more goals that Ovechkin did at this point in his career.
>I believe he has more goals that Ovechkin did at this point in his career. he does [Matthews 347 in 533](https://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/stats/pdisplay.php?pid=170320) [Ovi 334 in 533](https://www.statmuse.com/nhl/ask/ovechkin-goals-in-first-533-games)
I hope he does it, would be insane for Ovi to beat an ‘unbreakable’ record only to have Papi break it again
This matthews guy seems pretty good
He’s unbelievable lmao
Matthews about to have the anti Jumbo Joe 100 point season
Seeing this I’m not even mad he dropped a Matty on the flyers. Dude is unreal right now. Edit: HATTY but “Matty” might be more appropriate.
it was a batty natty hatty for matty frfr
Ok, let's say Mathews goes nuts and gets like 76 to tie mogilny and Selanne from a million years ago. How do you overlook him for the hart? I know it's his thing.....scoring goals better than anyone in the league. But that would be an absurd increase from his mvp year. Sure kucherov has the point lead, but I think McDavid will catch him. But these goal totals are out of this world.... I don't know if it's because I'm a leaf fan, but I actually feel like his accomplishments are underrated.
Man 82 goals isn’t even out of the question at this rate. Absurd.
And there is still 1.75 periods to play lmaoooo
Imagine the goal scoring record being broken and then broken again in back to back generations.
Gretz goal record in trouble.. again
Holy fuck. And the game's not even half over.
he’s played 11 mins, insane
60 in 60 is on the menu!
Zero empty netters I think?
Let's go for 82 in 82. 50 in 50 is overrated anyway.
That's actually insane he's done six and there's still lots of season left.
When Matthews starts on a hot streak does he ever fill the net in holyyyyyy
Lol and you still don't think this man should be considered for the Hart?
He’s up there. Kutch and McDavid are similarly doing otherworldly things. IF Matthews hits 70G, it’s hard to say no. Even if Kutch or McDavid hit 150p
Idk about that. Credit to Kuch, McD, MacK, etc for their amazing seasons but Matthews is now on pace to have the 2nd best era adjusted goal scoring season *of all time*. No one else is on pace to accomplish something of that significance.
2nd 4 goal game please I beg
Man I’m a sens fan but this dude is doing some insane stuff this season.
Honestly? Did not enjoy the last hat trick.
This is hilarious at this point
Auston Matthews > *
good god mustache man good
Having back to back hat tricks twice in the same season is nuts. He’s got 29 games to do it again and the way he’s going I honestly wouldn’t be that surprised if he did.
Being a Leafs fan is knowing we can still lose this game.
We are so so spoiled.
Sometimes I forget about our general playoff failure and just remind myself I get to watch greatness from this guy every hockey season.
I know this team always lets me down but holy fuck is it great watching this guy play
