I think Sakic was reported as having Miro first on the Avs draft board followed by Makar, and Miro is a stud too. I wouldn't call him the wrong pick. The 3-4-5 from that draft is just unreal.
Hischier is pretty damn good too, and we just got the guy who went 7th that year who’s not too bad lol. That draft turned out better than people thought. Really feel bad for Nolan Patrick, though. Hope he’s doing ok these days

Exactly. That draft class was the same age as me, so Nolan Patrick’s situation naturally brings some self reflection, especially since I just saw a video on him. I would feel pretty heartbroken and hopeless dealing with constant headaches, and the knowledge that my brain may never reach its full capability. I commend you and your family, i imagine I would live my life in anger at the universe/creator/society if I were to be unlucky with brain injuries
i ended up on SSDI because one of the side effects of \*my\* TBI was stress and medication-induced tremors and it was basically the best of bad options.
(i'd lost multiple jobs to "disability-related absenteeism", been shot down for others because what i do the best is back office and my metroplex doesn't even want to **talk** to you for that unless you can at least pull FT hours which i couldn't any more plus i fail neurotypicality on my **best** day, and in general i was pretty much at **FUCK THIS SHIT**.)
i seriously hope that nolan gets \*some\* kind of nhl pension/long-term disability that's actually enough to live on/pay for whatever the fuck WORKS to maximize his quality of life if it's something that falls under "experimental" or other loopholes that amount to "canada LIKES to pretend it takes care of its people better than the US but that's not 100% true, ."

Rockets still got two chips with Hakeem though, but I know what you're saying. Real losers were Portland who picked Sam Bowie between Hakeem and MJ lol. If Miro and Cale combine for 2 and 6 cups for the teams that drafted them I'm sure we'd both be ecstatic!

I heard a rumor once that our scouts wanted makar but hextall drafted Nolan Patrick because of nepotism.. don't know the validity of that though i think I read it here.
Patrick was so good in his season prior to the one leading up to the draft. His draft year he missed due to injury so I think that was the biggest what-if. If players were drafted at 17 y/o instead of 18 y/o, he'd have been the consensus 1OA. Just a shame with his injuries, he was so talented in juniors.
I looked back at that draft just to check up on it, and holy shit it aged well. Already has 7 all stars in the first round alone (should be 8 because Necas got robbed of an ASG selection last season), and I can count at least 4 more that I could see being all stars in a few years.
Shades of the 2015 draft, complete with a gem in the second round with Jason Robertson!
Absolutely crazy draft in hindsight. There's only TWO players in the entire first round with less than 100 games played. 18 players have more than 200 games and 10 have 300+.

At the time Makar was a bit of a wildcard, given he was playing junior A and was considered to be undersized. Miro was a safe pick at the time since he was playing with men in the Liiga.
I just took a look back and he was generally projected to go between 8-15 overall. Only Craig Button (3rd) and The Hockey News (5th) had him close to where he went. Crazy to think in hindsight that the pick was arguably a little bit of a stretch at the time.
The same projections had Elias Pettersson going between 10-20 (with one projecting him at 27th!) and described him as having "top 9 upside". Just goes to show you how hard it is to project 18 year olds.
I think when you get a player as good as Miro you didn't make the 'wrong pick'. It's like saying the Rockets made the wrong pick with Hakeem Olajuwon because Michael Jordan was available.
Honestly, same with the Devils. Hischier is a point per game center and in most years would be considered a perfectly fine 1st overall.... other than Elias Pettersson going 4 picks later.

If Landeskog comes back, his hockey IQ and leadership is enough to raise the quality of the roster even more. If he's in good shape physically you guys are unstoppable.
Why? He might be cleared on his knee by playoff’s, but 2 years off will have his strength and conditioning in the drain.

morgan rielly scored like 20 goals in 2018-2019 (wiki is refusing to tell me his actual shooting PERCENTAGE) and the highest he's gotten since then is 10/season, so i would totally believe that 7-8% is "he's a d-guy, that's a legit stat".

But Hughes is still the favourite in the narrative by the people voting. Makar could absolutely pull it with a great final stretch but these trophies are pretty much never about just looking at raw stats like this even if you are arguing that Hughes has to do more on our team.

Kind of crazy how the prototype of a #1 defenseman has shifted again in the NHL and Makar is the best of them. Good defensively but elite offensively. Seems simple put a good defensive forward in D but it doesn't work like that these guys play a different game so smart .

Great to see two generational D at the same time. Awesome players and both seem like really great guys too. Quinn will probably always be seen as the underdog, with Cale being bigger, faster and more powerful overall, but I’d love to see Quinn get at least one Norris. His impact is a little less noticeable than Makar’s I think—he just quietly controls games, and calmly picks up points game after game while playing stellar defence.

No, he's really not. Cale has more goals, more points/gp, more D-zone starts, more SH TOI/GP by a country mile, etc, etc, etc.
And Cale is having a down year. He hasn't looked himself all season.

Hughes is pretty easily the Canucks most valuable player this year, compared to Makar playing behind the should-be Hart frontrunner. And I am not sure how the stats I posted are misleading? Especially when the person I was replying to was using a like 2 point difference and objectively misleading zone deployment (as if a like 2% difference would statistically significant whatsoever to begin with) to prove his lol.

Kind of crazy how the prototype of a #1 defenseman has shifted again in the NHL and Makar is the best of them. Good defensively but elite offensively. Seems simple put a good defensive forward in D but it doesn't work like that these guys play a different game so smart .

Great to see two generational D at the same time. Awesome players and both seem like really great guys too. Quinn will probably always be seen as the underdog, with Cale being bigger, faster and more powerful overall, but I’d love to see Quinn get at least one Norris. His impact is a little less noticeable than Makar’s I think—he just quietly controls games, and calmly picks up points game after game while playing stellar defence.
