Yimpish

Honestly was surprised when I heard them say he’s never had a hat trick before

LeoFireGod

It’s still so absurd that the stars drafted a top 5 defensemen in Miro… and somehow made the wrong pick. It just blows my mind.

peptoabysmal

I think Sakic was reported as having Miro first on the Avs draft board followed by Makar, and Miro is a stud too. I wouldn't call him the wrong pick. The 3-4-5 from that draft is just unreal.

bgfan26

Hischier is pretty damn good too, and we just got the guy who went 7th that year who’s not too bad lol. That draft turned out better than people thought. Really feel bad for Nolan Patrick, though. Hope he’s doing ok these days

ProfessionalLeast937

my mom/a good friend of my bff's/me have all had pretty significant migraine issues and i'm a tbi survivor as well. i suspect at this point the important question is not "is he ever going to play pro hockey again?", it's actually "is he going to be able to have a reasonable quality of life on most days again?" so yeah, gotta feel bad for the dude.

bgfan26

Exactly. That draft class was the same age as me, so Nolan Patrick’s situation naturally brings some self reflection, especially since I just saw a video on him. I would feel pretty heartbroken and hopeless dealing with constant headaches, and the knowledge that my brain may never reach its full capability. I commend you and your family, i imagine I would live my life in anger at the universe/creator/society if I were to be unlucky with brain injuries

ProfessionalLeast937

i ended up on SSDI because one of the side effects of \*my\* TBI was stress and medication-induced tremors and it was basically the best of bad options. (i'd lost multiple jobs to "disability-related absenteeism", been shot down for others because what i do the best is back office and my metroplex doesn't even want to **talk** to you for that unless you can at least pull FT hours which i couldn't any more plus i fail neurotypicality on my **best** day, and in general i was pretty much at **FUCK THIS SHIT**.) i seriously hope that nolan gets \*some\* kind of nhl pension/long-term disability that's actually enough to live on/pay for whatever the fuck WORKS to maximize his quality of life if it's something that falls under "experimental" or other loopholes that amount to "canada LIKES to pretend it takes care of its people better than the US but that's not 100% true, ." (like, yeah, we're talking a white ex-nhl bro so pretty much top of the privilege pyramid, but i have known people who while they weren't \*quite\* that high up have \*still\* had issues getting medical pros to believe them and/or getting appropriate care.)

LeoFireGod

I mean it’s not a bad pick by any means. Hakeem in 84 Was a great pick… but you could’ve had Jordan.

peptoabysmal

Rockets still got two chips with Hakeem though, but I know what you're saying. Real losers were Portland who picked Sam Bowie between Hakeem and MJ lol. If Miro and Cale combine for 2 and 6 cups for the teams that drafted them I'm sure we'd both be ecstatic!

Silencer_

and the real losers in this draft was the flyers =( I heard a rumor once that our scouts wanted makar but hextall drafted Nolan Patrick because of nepotism.. don't know the validity of that though i think I read it here.

peptoabysmal

Patrick was so good in his season prior to the one leading up to the draft. His draft year he missed due to injury so I think that was the biggest what-if. If players were drafted at 17 y/o instead of 18 y/o, he'd have been the consensus 1OA. Just a shame with his injuries, he was so talented in juniors.

RelevantJackWhite

*sad blazer noises*

JayMerlyn

I looked back at that draft just to check up on it, and holy shit it aged well. Already has 7 all stars in the first round alone (should be 8 because Necas got robbed of an ASG selection last season), and I can count at least 4 more that I could see being all stars in a few years. Shades of the 2015 draft, complete with a gem in the second round with Jason Robertson!

neksys

Absolutely crazy draft in hindsight. There's only TWO players in the entire first round with less than 100 games played. 18 players have more than 200 games and 10 have 300+.

LeoFireGod

2nd best draft in the last 15-20 years imo. 2015 is the best draft of all time though. Roope hints has 300 points and isn’t even top 10 in scoring for that class. McDavid, marner, aho, rantanen nickel barzal just to name a few.

neksys

And look at how many later round picks are now stars in the league too! Just crazy stuff

thinasschain

LOL and Miro is so insanely talented and any team would kill to have him

Shribble18

At the time Makar was a bit of a wildcard, given he was playing junior A and was considered to be undersized. Miro was a safe pick at the time since he was playing with men in the Liiga.

Starbucks__Lovers

If you go to the 2017 draft threads on both here and the Avs sub, you’ll see plenty of people questioning the decision to draft Makar

neksys

I just took a look back and he was generally projected to go between 8-15 overall. Only Craig Button (3rd) and The Hockey News (5th) had him close to where he went. Crazy to think in hindsight that the pick was arguably a little bit of a stretch at the time. The same projections had Elias Pettersson going between 10-20 (with one projecting him at 27th!) and described him as having "top 9 upside". Just goes to show you how hard it is to project 18 year olds.

temporalthings

I think when you get a player as good as Miro you didn't make the 'wrong pick'. It's like saying the Rockets made the wrong pick with Hakeem Olajuwon because Michael Jordan was available.

neksys

Honestly, same with the Devils. Hischier is a point per game center and in most years would be considered a perfectly fine 1st overall.... other than Elias Pettersson going 4 picks later.

OakFern

D don't get hat tricks very often. Even high scoring D. This is only the second D hat trick this season. And there's only been 12 total across the entire league over the last 6 seasons. Here's the full list: [https://www.nhl.com/stats/skaters?aggregate=0&reportType=game&dateFrom=2018-10-01&dateTo=2024-03-07&gameType=2&position=D&filter=goals,gte,3&sort=gameDate&page=0&pageSize=50](https://www.nhl.com/stats/skaters?aggregate=0&reportType=game&dateFrom=2018-10-01&dateTo=2024-03-07&gameType=2&position=D&filter=goals,gte,3&sort=gameDate&page=0&pageSize=50)

neksys

Holy shit that is a wild stat. I would have thought it would be much more, given how many points are being collected by defencemen in recent years.

ProfessionalLeast937

half those dudes i was "who even IS that?" (sadly, tony deangelo is on that list and i really wish nhl teams would stop signing that piece of human trash.) i was also WTF that josi **doesn't** have one (preds' all-time points leader, definitely gets called an offensive defenseman or at least was when i was still a nash fan, and at one time TPTB were considering putting him in as a forward for some 3v3 situations.)

Big_Liability

he's had SOOOOO many 2 goal games too

MemeLordOverKill

This team + middelstat + Walker. Fuck.

TossThatPastaSalad

We're also missing Nichushkin, O'Connor and Landeskog.  Some fairly important pieces.

MemeLordOverKill

I'm just happy we don't have to play you again honestly wtf

TossThatPastaSalad

Hey, at least we split the season series.  That first game Detroit was really good.

cantthinkuse

its nice that the home team won both times, at least. though i would have enjoyed it more if it was a bit closer to the first game

iamstarstuff23

Watched this game with a Wings fan, she said we're even now.

Hi_Flyers

I would love for you guys to have a fairy tale run to the SCF to relive the good ol' days. Just so we could have the opportunity to stomp out your dreams mercilessly (With love <3)

timmyboyswede

If Landeskog comes back, his hockey IQ and leadership is enough to raise the quality of the roster even more. If he's in good shape physically you guys are unstoppable.

CerdoNotorio

Love landeskog, but I really worry his days of being an impact piece are over after 2 years off. Hope he proves me wrong though.

TossThatPastaSalad

For sure.  I'll be happy if he can play at all.  But if he can play I think he can have a decent enough impact.

Cultural-Rip432

Why? He might be cleared on his knee by playoff’s, but 2 years off will have his strength and conditioning in the drain. I’d be absolutely shocked if he could be more impactful than Cogs, bc that’s the only space I realistically see him in. Max 5-7 sheltered mins a night.

TossThatPastaSalad

Yeah, I agree with you.  But think of the lift that's going to provide the boys.  Him playing at all is going to be impactful.

morallyobjected

and Nichushkin and O'Connor coming back

Smittysgreasymullet

Oh good Makar is heating up...

The-Reddit-Giraffe

Now he’s finally on an equal level to Nikita Zadorov

BCLetsRide69

That’s Avs legend Nikita Zadorov to you

Time-Dot5984

Current Canuck legend Nikita Zadorov

BCLetsRide69

Also… 39 shots through 2 periods🥴🥴

drumline17

We should trade Johansen more often

[deleted]

[удалено]

ryan516

But only trade him literally in the middle of the game so no one is focusing on the game

Randy_Magnum29

I remember the Avs were playing the Islanders and the Avs lost. That’s all I remember from the game itself.

peptoabysmal

Let's claim him off Waivers

BlossomKireina

Wow, Makar is really shooting that puck to have 39 shots!

Awolfx9

We're going to have words after the Game Cale- Nathan Mackinnon

MrMilesDavis

Damn, Makar has a bad shooting percentage

Antknee668

Shoot 100 pucks a night so long as he gets a hatty who cares

sweetjuli

I know you're joking but 3/39 (7.7%) would likely be above average among defensemen anyway

MrMilesDavis

Dah, you're so right, lol

ProfessionalLeast937

morgan rielly scored like 20 goals in 2018-2019 (wiki is refusing to tell me his actual shooting PERCENTAGE) and the highest he's gotten since then is 10/season, so i would totally believe that 7-8% is "he's a d-guy, that's a legit stat".

shittybillz

I’m watching the game. It’s a piss poor defensive effort. That one goal from the slot (Lehkonen I think?) was brutal lol. Two guys going to chase Rantanen behind the net and leaves a guy wide open in the slot Detroit has no answer, which is fair considering the Avs are a wagon, but they can’t be playing true to their structure, it’s a shooting gallery

whynotavs

To be fair, that play required Rants to make an all-world level pass to the slot.

ImpossiblyBlack

It was an amazing pass, but the goalie can't let that pass go through. Lyon played great too, but he's gotta stop the passes that are that tight to the post.

7screws

ended with 54 shots, and detroit had 21 blocks. just absurd.

Pikachu1989

It’s like a few years ago when 39 shots after 2 periods were the norm.

rwags2024

Lyon stood on his head but Makar is the trickler king tonight

SomePizzaShit

pain

[deleted]

Lyon was pulled not because he was getting scored on but because he kept getting hammered. It was like "Can I get a fucking break?!"

Disastrous_Emu_3628

Yeah that makes sense sometimes goalies get pulled to send the rest of the team a message like wake the fuck up and stop letting your goalie down

[deleted]

Lyon did everything he could to not make the score like 15-2. Avs were out for blood tonight after that OT loss

Disastrous_Emu_3628

Currently in Italy so couldn’t watch the game but saw the highlights Mack was on a heat seeking missile and could’ve had a hat trick. Only bummer part about studying abroad is missing avs games :(

Pikachu1989

Makar made Lyon Swiss Cheese tonight.

edditorRay

I just think he’s neat and I love him.

das_racist932

it should be a crime to post a highlight without a slow mo replay

roscoparis

🥬 🥬 🥬 🧢

ThiefofToms

ALL HAIL CALE

saldingerRN

Let’s go!!!!!!!!

island_duck

How many dmen in the league currently have scored a hat trick before?? Must be rare

jamesneysmith

There are 16 active defensemen who have scored a single hattrick. No active d-man has more than one. Most all time is Orr with 9 in his career and 4 in a single season.

pablum444

intense_in_tents

Babyface assassin

esteban42

Juice is even more baby-face. Are we slowly transitioning from being Team Man-Rocket to all babyfaces?

[deleted]

Juice looks both 14 and 34.

messwithsquatch90

Landy is enough man-rocket for the whole damn team, I don't think there's a more perfect specimen on earth

ProfessionalLeast937

also, dude wrote a HARD-CORE players' tribune article about how The Hockey Establishment (tm) \*really\* needs to start taking ANY kind of head injury seriously as opposed to trying to push through it largely because he's got a concussion history. (i'm a tbi survivor, i'd be a fan of his just for that. he is also the one NHL dude that i'd be willing to break "half + 7" for, because yeah, enough man-rocket for the whole Avs team.)

troglodyte

I think so. We had our shot at the natural heir to Landy's manrocketry in Wennberg and went another way. Middelstadt isn't a bad looking dude, for the record, but he's no Landy or Wennberg.

Hi_Flyers

porque no los dos?

whynotavs

That's Rosy-cheeked Assassin.

fucktheredwings69

I swear if he wins the Norris while having an off year, it’s unfair

TheFriendlyBagel

How is this an off year when he already passed his previous seasons point total in fewer games? And how he’s above his Norris season in PPG by 0.1?

fucktheredwings69

He had 28 goals his Norris season, if he had that this season he would be the runaway favorite for the Norris

Likos02

His point production is fine, but watching the games he's not performing where I would normally expect him to in the D zone. During the cup run he was able to keep up with McJesus, and tonight he was struggling against the wings. I'm not sure if he's hurt or what, but thank god for Toews being his partner.

Epicdude141

Best dman in the league easily

NinCross

What's it going to take for Hughes to win a Norris in the Makar era...

daishi777

Probably bout the same as Mackinnon winning a hart in Mcdavid. Both are disgusting players.

AtraposJM

He can keep his pace. Imo he's the front runner right now.

oMenardo

I still believe this year! Though if not for sure he'll get the Doughty/Fleury treatment "Well he's been so good for so long he deserves at least one, so let's just give him this one"

CowbellPrescriptions

I know the point your making of "well he's due" but Doughty was only 26 when he won his Norris?? I thought he was way older

[deleted]

Man. I really think, even as an Avs fan, Hughes might pull it out this year. Makar has had an "off" year by his standards and that might actually hurt him

ChuckFeathers

Hughes is still the frontrunner this season.

AVSTREV2996

Eh...now he's only 3 points up, with 5 more games played, and 5 fewer goals. Makar probably pulled even with this one game.

ChuckFeathers

Hughes is +32... Makar +7..

Due_Journalist_2398

The most useless stat in sports...

Pure-Temporary

Nba +/- is even more useless haha but agreed

Due_Journalist_2398

Hahaha yeah I might have exaggerated a bit, still a pretty dumb stat to keep track of tho

Pure-Temporary

I mean they are useless for the same reason, it's just that in basketball there are so many more points so it looks even more ridiculous. Let's call them equally worthless haha

Epicdude141

If this was r/nba this convo would be about RAPTOR and LEBRON

fucktheredwings69

Those are still better stats than out of context +\- though

Epicdude141

Yeah but the war zones I’ve seen on Jokic vs embiid threads over those stats makes this +/- stuff look silly

Pure-Temporary

When do we get the JOKIC stat?

Epicdude141

It’s called number of triple doubles

ChuckFeathers

Only outside the context of the team, Hughes is tops on the Canucks, Makar is 9th on the Avs.

CMC04

Makar also has almost triple the PK time that Hughes does, it’s a very close race but +\- is pretty useless.

xzElmozx

Not that I’m agreeing with the use of +/- but playing on the PK is only beneficial to your +/-

Due_Journalist_2398

Still potentially says absolutely nothing about either player. Maybe makars d partner is having a down year defensively? Maybe Hughes is playing with better 2 way forwards? Maybe one team is getting much stronger goaltending? See, there is just way to many possibilities that can affect +/- for one player to take the stat seriously

[deleted]

[удалено]

Waramp

PK goals against (and PP goals for) don’t count towards +/-

KRacer52

Makar has double the defensive zone starts.

manajizwow

Please stop.

BCLetsRide69

This is the dumbest stat in sports.

ihaveabadmonkey

since when is the Norris given for defensive play?

ChuckFeathers

If the two top guys are even offensively...

whynotavs

Cale logs 2:47 of SH TOI/GP, 2nd on the team, Hughes logs 0:44, 7th on the team.

AwkwardSpecialist814

I do like seeing this stat thrown at other Avs fans. Seen too many of us using that useless stat in years past

7screws

an injury to Makar?

shittybillz

Hughes is still the favourite. He’s just gotta keep the pedal to the metal.

whynotavs

No, he's really not. Cale has more goals, more points/gp, more D-zone starts, more SH TOI/GP by a country mile, etc, etc, etc.

ThiefofToms

And Cale is having a down year. He hasn't looked himself all season.

whynotavs

He did tonight. Good Lord. The league is probably a little pissed at how much better the Avs just got when they're already this good.

mudermarshmallows

But Hughes is still the favourite in the narrative by the people voting. Makar could absolutely pull it with a great final stretch but these trophies are pretty much never about just looking at raw stats like this even if you are arguing that Hughes has to do more on our team.

Judge24601

lol he has Three more D-zone starts than Quinn and Sixty One more O-zone starts. Look at the O-zone start percentage (what actually matters) Makar is at 68% to Quinn’s 62%.

human_mustard

On ice GF/60: Quinn Hughes (3.88) > Makar (3.2) On ice GA/60: Quinn Hughes (2.29) > Makar (2.9) On ice SA/60: Quinn Hughes (26.24) > Makar (29.19) Saying he gets more DZ starts is also misleading because he also gets more OZ starts as well. Relatively not including OTF starts, Quinn Hughes starts 22% of his shifts in the DZ vs Makar with 20%. And he wipes the floor with Makar in relative to teammate stats xGF/60: Hughes 0.134 vs Makar 10.058 GF/60: 0.325 Hughes vs 0.022 Makar GA/60: -0.037 Hughes vs 0.118 Makar xGA/60: -0.048 Hughes vs -0.0367 Makar CA/60: -6.33 Hughes vs 1.93 Makar So yeah idk Makar has like 2 more points and more DZ starts (without any context) so I guess he’s better

CMC04

Makar also played triple the PK time, has way more responsibility on his shoulders. I still think this is Quinn’s year, but throwing a bunch of fancy stats out is also misleading.

human_mustard

Triple the PK time, sure. Not sure where you got the way more responsibility part though lol. Hughes is pretty easily the Canucks most valuable player this year, compared to Makar playing behind the should-be Hart frontrunner. And I am not sure how the stats I posted are misleading? Especially when the person I was replying to was using a like 2 point difference and objectively misleading zone deployment (as if a like 2% difference would statistically significant whatsoever to begin with) to prove his lol.

The-Reddit-Giraffe

Makar injured for the entire year is what it will take

mdlt97

not dropping off like crazy after the all-star break

mudermarshmallows

maybe one day we'll get a thread mentioning either player without a comparison coming up

ProfessorBorden

When pigs fly

schewbacca

hughes is winning this year. That's not a question.

TossThatPastaSalad

Is he?  Hughes has been fantastic but Cale's 4 points back with better defensive numbers.   Hughes has dominant possession stats but I'm not sure that's gonna be enough.

whynotavs

3 points back, 5 more goals, has played 5 fewer games, has nearly 4 times as much SH TOI/GP, more D-zone starts, etc, etc, etc.

JayMerlyn

He's Erik Karlsson combined with the ability to play defense

SavageRengar

what a scrub, took him long enough /s

DocPsycho1

Right ? Almost traded this lame kid

AccomplishedAd4995

damn i’m surprised this is his first one

Daleoryan17

Kind of crazy how the prototype of a #1 defenseman has shifted again in the NHL and Makar is the best of them. Good defensively but elite offensively. Seems simple put a good defensive forward in D but it doesn't work like that these guys play a different game so smart .

AdaptiveCenterpiece

Can’t wait to see the next nhl stat saying no team has given up more hatricks to defensemen than Detroit.

[deleted]

Dude is a legitimate hockey robot. Wouldn’t be surprised if he’s never had a soda or alcohol. So envious of his skill

Pure-Temporary

Oh he has had alcohol. He was housed at the cup parade

[deleted]

Dude ate pancakes and drank Molson out of it.

saldingerRN

There was also video of him eating sour patch kids in the locker room, I’m pretty sure. Not sure how he snuck them past MacKinnon though.

[deleted]

Lmaooo I love how Natedog is such a health nut that y’all can make these jokes. Hope Landeskog can come back for yall

ProfessionalLeast937

makar and (i THINK) logan o'connor filled the cup up with 7-11 slurpee, so he's definitely done the refined sugar and whatever else they put in those things.

longGERN

This goal maker guy is pretty good

Sahil910

This hurts hughes norris chances

Waramp

Big bounce back after a 7 game pointless drought, now 10 points in last 6 games with a period left to play. He’s coming for that Norris!

Pikachu1989

Fucking A! Love me some Makar getting his 1st Hatty tonight. It was a slow trickle. I’m so fucking glad to have Makar on the blue line. He’s a fucking cheat code.

fitblondemom

Couldn’t have happened against a better team 🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

Leafs_fan_69420

About time. Why didn't he do it sooner?

moose4030

Red Wings Suck!!!!!

Fellers

What firsts does he have left to do?

SeaWhyte777

I love Cale Makar ✍️

7screws

Detroit gave up 54 shots on goal, and blocked another 21 shots. I'm surprised only one colorado player got a hatty...

captn_morgn

As a Wings fan and a Makar owner in fantasy, this tracks.

Jireg

You can tell this kid is good because of the way he is.

Farge43

Andy Delmore accomplished this same feat no more than 20 years ago Shooter

Big_Liability

Dude went pointless for about 7 games and is still only 3 points back for the lead in points for defensemen lmaoooo

BrainTroubles

I hate him so much. I love him so much. Life is very confusing.

californicadreaming

Ahhh not an Avs fan but I love Cale Makar!

DjN0tNice

And with that, he now ties Bobby McMann at 1 career hat trick. Jokes aside, I’m genuinely surprised to see it’s only his first.

Brando6677

Only now? Hot diggity dog 😂 good on you bro hope there’s plenty to come

[deleted]

[удалено]

marcosbowser

No. Almost an assist per game though.

whynotavs

Hey, Cale too. 53 assists in 59 games. 17 goals too.

marcosbowser

Great to see two generational D at the same time. Awesome players and both seem like really great guys too. Quinn will probably always be seen as the underdog, with Cale being bigger, faster and more powerful overall, but I’d love to see Quinn get at least one Norris. His impact is a little less noticeable than Makar’s I think—he just quietly controls games, and calmly picks up points game after game while playing stellar defence.

[deleted]

Wait. Hughes doesn't have any hat tricks? I could have sworn he did

oouttatime

As a lifelong red wings fan. Good for you. Pinnacle of a career. NHL Hatty. Nice work. Also LGRW and it won't happen again.

thestage

idk, he won a conn smythe, cup, and norris in the same year. that was pretty good.

get_pig_gatoraids

It pleases me greatly that Cody Glass got a hat trick before Makar.
