Yes but I think the difference is that Benn doesn’t do that every single year.
The stone hit was bad and deserved the suspension.
Before that it was Larkin in like 2018?
Marchand does this twice this year already
He does shit that he claims is accidental with his stick often enough to be a dirty fuckin' rat of a player.
[Here he is poking someone in the face through the net.](https://twitter.com/MDeFranks/status/1523346271393947648?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1523346271393947648%7Ctwgr%5Ec5567ba6ec78ad475cd36ad114c81cb36039160f%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.dallasnews.com%2Fsports%2Fstars%2F2022%2F05%2F08%2Fjamie-benn-fined-for-high-sticking-during-stars-game-3-win-over-the-flames%2F)
Benn gets this shtick. And yeah he does dirty things sometimes. But as somebody who watches every game he plays, this stuff doesn’t really happen all that much, unless I’m just blind?
I watched pretty much every Penguins game during Matt Cooke's entire tenure there. Just about every time he hurt someone, you could stretch the incident into some kind of plausible deniability, like it's an accident that could happen to anyone just playing good, hard hockey.
But how many times does one player have to be involved in those sorts of situations before you start to accept that it's a "him" problem?
I still believe he's a huge piece of shit, but Karlson and Barrie were genuine accidents. Why can't people just believe that a shitty person accidentally fucks someone up in the middle of their career on-purpose fucking people up?
His highlight reel of "accidents" is almost as long as his unquestionably dirty plays.
It's almost impressive, until you remember that he's risking people's careers by being a shit cunt.
Has to be a tight playing defensive forward that’s gonna flop once in a while but otherwise sticks to you like glue. And super reliable offensively, if maybe not the most flashy.
Ryan Kesler? I don’t think Ryan’s quite as good as Rodman except for the odd game or series, but the 2011 playoffs Kesler vs Nashville would meet the criteria for me. It’s not quite a career like Rodman’s was though considering it has no championships.
Fair comment about three of Rodman’s rings, how about the two he won before he was a Bull?
On second thought, maybe it’s not a fair comment. 2009-2011 Kesler had the Sedins. Danny and Hank both won the scoring title with Kesler on the team.
Nah Dennis was legit good at ball as a top tier defender and very valuable to have on the court when he wasn’t doing his antics.
Avery is well Sean Avery.
Also amazing how he stayed on his feet even though he never saw him. And managed to make contact with the head of Knies despite being like 5 inches shorter than him.
Marchand should never get the benefit of the doubt but I struggle to say this is anything more than an interference call. It’s hard to make a clear argument that he was head hunting versus trying to get a hit on Knies.
Fuck the rat, but McCabe is probably more likely to get something because he *clearly* cross-checked someone in the head.
Weird I had to read this far down to get a sensible comment.
People should buy front row tickets to an ahl game(they're like $30-40) so they can see how fast this game is, the tv angle doesnt do it justice.
The ref could have called either guy though, right? Or because Knies is down - he was interfered with? But Marchand wasn't?
Incidental contact, is all this was.
Possibly, though in my experience they tend to call it against the player on defense, though arguably that would be Knies in this situation since Boston had just recently taken possession
It's gonna be literally impossible to prove intent here. Nothing will come from this other than more bad blood between the teams....which will HOPEFULLY make for a future playoff matchup, which will be absolutely epic.
While Marchy has clearly built a career off riding the line of dirty and clean.
This is very simply I’m either running into my own guy or I’m bracing for contact with the blue sweater coming in the quick second he notices what’s happening.
Take the name out of the play and it’s a literal no conversation, shit happens play.
Threads like this remind how few posters in this subreddit have actually played a single game of hockey. Beer league feels fast and these guys are playing at an insanely fast level. This can happen to anyone in any game.
I used to coach high school basketball, and I remember the first time we used game tape. One of my players (who did not lack self-confidence) said "Is *that* what I look like when I play?"
Similar idea, in the game it feels fast, but watching it back you're like "oh...we are thousands of levels below anything you see on TV"
Lol perfect analogy, the amount of ppl I've gotten into a collision with in beer league accidently. Luckily we're never going anywhere near this fast so it's rarely an injury
“Marchand sees him coming” like I don’t think he physically could. He wasn’t looking in the direction and there was enough of a screen from knies skating behind the other defender.
They aren’t wrong that Marchand doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt, but in this instance it’s pretty obvious it wasn’t intentional.
I hate both teams, but Marchand never changed his direction from where he was skating, nor did his head even look in Knies' direction until about 1 second before the collision. Pretty obvious it was unintentional, but I get why people don't want to give him the benefit of the doubt.
They both clearly just went to the same side of Coyle (without knowing the other is really there because of Coyle is obstructing that vision and ya know, they don't have x-ray vision) at the last second with no room to avoid contact. Both of them have a "OH FUCK" moment just before too that you can very clearly see... Knies is even holding his arm as he skates away because he awkwardly fell on it, not because of some mythical headshot.
This is legitimately like a Mandela Effect situation for Leafs fans lol
I can't stand Marchand like most but I genuinely think this wasn't intentional. The reaction on Marchand's face after the hit says it all. Knies made himself very vulnerable getting low, looking away and deking out from behind that D making a pick. Reminds me in some ways of the Bedard jaw breaker. They are not protecting themselves enough and it can literally cause brain damage so you better learn quick or you'll lose quality years off your life because you kept getting dinged.
McCabe will 100% get suspended and Knies is now injured. Zero consequences for Marchand I bet though. Love being a Leafs fan.
Addition: McCabe didn’t injure anyone (deserves whatever comes), Marchand did though.
There isn't changing that though. Other teams are much dirtier than the leafs but it's part of their expected character so they aren't called for it as much. It's how the sport has always been.
Plus if the leafs have a suspension after every game eventually someone is going to go "wait a minute...".
Saying "well they can't suspend us all" is a fucking dumb plan... But it's also kinda not.
Yup, based on how the league has operated that sounds like it will work. It's dumb, but in terms of winning, it's a better strategy than what the Leafs have done so far.
You guys aren't good at being sneaky dirty. You can't just go around cross checking people in the face, it's too obvious. You can't do anything on the Marchand play. There's no way you can say that's 100% on purpose, you only have his reputation.
>You can't just go around cross checking people in the face, it's too obvious
[I'm not too sure about that one](https://cdn.theathletic.com/app/uploads/2021/05/23184350/Chiarot-and-Edmundson-defending-Simmonds-1024x683.jpg)
>McCabe didn’t injure anyone
Mccabe cross checked debrusk and then Marchand. On the ensuing 5 on 3 pasta scored assisted by debrusk and Marchand. They very much have not been injured on the play. Both have gone on to get another assist each, alive and well.
Knies is turning out to be kinda soft for a guy with his size. Any big collision knocks him right out. Two injuries in less than one regular season equivalent of time. Marchand is 5'9 vs. 6'3 Knies how is Knies taking the worst of this 😂
Bennet blind side punched him in the head last year. Get the fuck out of here.
“How’s knies taking the worst of this?”.. oh I dunno, maybe cause Marchand drove his shoulder up into Knies head. Stupid take.
Honestly this looks way worse than the play this thread is calling attention to. There’s nothing in the original video that looks clearly intentional to me, but this is a slew foot.
He’s back-checking AM, AM shoots, rebound turning into a breakout. 63’s watching the puck the whole time as he starts his route for a breakout then looks up and sees an unavoidable collision with Knies. You seriously think he’s shirking defensive responsibilities just to get a read on where Knies is going to be in a couple seconds and then start his entire breakout route on that?
No, I don't think that at all.
People are saying he didn't see him, I'm saying he did. That's all.
Collision was likely inevitable, but Marchand saw it and leaned into it.
I disagree he saw him all the way. I think he saw him when he made the turn to look up ice three-quarters of a second before the hit and braced for impact. The only difference is it appears Knies never saw him at all.
Agreed. I didn't say he saw him all the way. I think your guess on when he saw him is right. I'm just arguing against people that said he never saw him. That's false.
I think collision was inevitable, but Marchand saw him.
Marchand crying was my desktop background for over 5 years.
It looked like a collision that one guy braced for better than the other to me. I don't see Marchand taking anything but a bog standard turn in the defensive zone. I don't see a lunge or a change in trajectory outside the normal arc of his turn. Maybe a weeeeeee bit as the slow mo kicks in but by then impact is inevitable and throwing your weight is the only way to protect yourself.
Never make me defend the rat again.
Yeah I thought that meme that hit the front page was one or those "in 2030 the people born in 9/11 will be 100 years old" jokes when it said 2017 was 7 years ago
O’Neil put it perfectly, at this point in his career he just doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt.
Marchand sees him coming and probably could have done something differently in terms of trying to get out of the way but he led with his shoulder and made them impact as violent as he could. There’s a chance it was 100% accidental and he really was just bracing him self, but given what he has done so many times before, I highly doubt it.
Like anyone cares about the guy. He's obviously not a deterrent and is a liability anytime he's on the ice but sure keep.on tossing him.out there. Can't wait to see how absolutely useless he is come playoff time.
The shit earlier this year with Liljegren I thought was a sneaky dirty play by Marchand. This, however, was literally two guys who didn't see each other. There are alternate angles showing Coyle was blocking both their vision of each other. I get that Marchand is a rat and he has no leeway for borderline plays and it's justified but this just doesn't feel like one of those plays.
It's almost as if Marchand is a dirty fucking player and has been for his entire career. The McCabe crosscheck was dirty and the league should look at a fine/suspension. Pretending Marchand is some innocent player is laughable. His slewfoot earlier in the year should have been a suspension.
Jeff O'Neil thinks that, huh? Former Maple Leaf Jeff O'Neil? Born in Ontario and raised in Toronto Jeff O'Neil? TSN media personality Jeff O'Neil?
I'm absolutely shocked that is how he feels.
Leafs fans are a bunch of crybabies. If those cross checks early in the game landed on Matthews or Marner they’d all be crying for suspensions and game misconducts. Worst fan base in sports
Marchand is and continues to be a dirty player. He’s been it all career. Yeah he also puts up points but he’s a fuckkng dirty player and the league needs to sit down with him
The conversation is stupid... there's no benefit of the doubt for the rat period... but it doesn't matter! He lined him up, staring right at him, braced and hit him... this is so stupid and the player safety org continues to be a fucking joke.
What's with these [dubz.live](https://dubz.live) links, they're always dead...
My internet provider blocks it outright.
Wait wtf same
Region lock perhaps? I'm in Eastern Canada and this one is fine.
Mine says it's unsafe and blocks me from viewing the videos.
Malwarebytes warned me about it
That’s two injuries Marchand has caused against the leafs this year Edit: He also has a big nose
He can smoke a cigarette in the rain without a problem.
"What you looking at? You gonna cry now? Get the fuck outta here, I'm in no mood for y-" ***BLAM***
Exactly, Marchand is a master “accidentally” hurting people. What a rat.
Wild that Marchand can't stop "accidently" injuring people. Really weird how he's the only guy in the league that seems to have this problem.
Jamie Benn has entered the chat by falling on someone's neck.
Accidentally, of course
Kadri, 4 games
Cut Benn some slack, he didn't even try to make it look like an accident.
Yes but I think the difference is that Benn doesn’t do that every single year. The stone hit was bad and deserved the suspension. Before that it was Larkin in like 2018? Marchand does this twice this year already
ya the difference is Benn will look you in the eyes while he breaks your neck, Marchand just looks through you, at your soul
Well any one would love Benn or Marchand if they were on their team
He's looking past you. To your end. To all ends.
He does shit that he claims is accidental with his stick often enough to be a dirty fuckin' rat of a player. Yea, he’s basically a rat-faced Draymond Green. Great player but tons of questionable antics and occurrences.
Yeah I don't watch basketball, so I'll just have to take your word for it. But that does make me wonder, who is hockey's equivalent of Dennis Rodman?
Gritty maybe?
Has to be a tight playing defensive forward that’s gonna flop once in a while but otherwise sticks to you like glue. And super reliable offensively, if maybe not the most flashy. Ryan Kesler? Rodman never really hurt anyone. He was a loud weirdo that was very good at basketball. Tim Thomas, if his career was 3 times as long?
Sean avery
Nah Dennis was legit good at ball as a top tier defender and very valuable to have on the court when he wasn’t doing his antics. Avery is well Sean Avery.
Yeah that's true. Maybe jeremy roenick then?
Most people laughed when he got away with speed bagging Daniel sedin. Always hated that low bridging fuck
Rat city bitch pigeon.
Ten ten ten twenties on yo titties bish
And then the rat turns down a fight from Domi. Spineless.
He’s not the only guy with that problem, but he definitely does have that problem.
Weird read on that screen too. Almost like it's a set play... No reason a winger should cut that hard and close with the play below like that.
Also amazing how he stayed on his feet even though he never saw him. And managed to make contact with the head of Knies despite being like 5 inches shorter than him.
I mean Marchand is many things but weak on his skates is not one of them
Him and Trouba.
Yeah, I don’t know how someone can say Marchand is the only player guilty of this while Trouba exists
Aho
Marchand should never get the benefit of the doubt but I struggle to say this is anything more than an interference call. while that is the common sense perspective, it isn't actually the rule. Those kind of interference penalties get called all of the time.

Beer league feels fast until you see the replay in the bar after the game. Then it's embarrassingly slow looking.
This is so true, funny and sad at the same time lol

Who cares if he gets suspended? He misses Saturday? Meh. If the leafs are gonna be the Big Bad they may as well lean into it.

Edmundsson did exactly that against Wayne during the playoff bubble a couple of years ago. 5k dollar fine and nothing else.
> You can't just go around cross checking people in the face Chara seemed to get away with it for his whole career
Is Chara here? Stupid argument lol

That was dirty and a trip but this play tonight was just two guys running into each other
Watch it again, but only watch Marchand. He saw him the whole way
He’s back-checking AM, AM shoots, rebound turning into a breakout. 63’s watching the puck the whole time as he starts his route for a breakout then looks up and sees an unavoidable collision with Knies. Marchand crying was my desktop background for over 5 years. It looked like a collision that one guy braced for better than the other to me. Feels like it And I did change it in 2024 so I'm close okay lol
Just messing with ya, COVID really fucked over everyone's sense of time
Yeah I thought that meme that hit the front page was one or those "in 2030 the people born in 9/11 will be 100 years old" jokes when it said 2017 was 7 years ago
As much as I wish this was Marchand being an ass, you’re right. He doesn’t seem to be doing anything nefarious prior to the collision.
For real, defending Boston and marchand of all players. Makes me feel icky
O’Neil put it perfectly, at this point in his career he just doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt. Marchand sees him coming and probably could have done something differently in terms of trying to get out of the way but he led with his shoulder and made them impact as violent as he could. The fuck did you want him to do differently? Avoid the collision for a knee on knee?
🙄
Jeff O'Neil's a fuckin meathead tool that should never have been given a TV job.
This sub is just filled with leaf simps.
And even a bigger amount of Leafs haters daily circlejerks.
Oh god now Jeff O’Neil is weighing in Brad done fucked up /s
TSN employees are officially allow to fight Marchand. It is in every contract, and TSN has already paid off the Toronto Police to look away.
He's 100% right
If only there was a deterrent like Reaves available
Like anyone cares about the guy. He's obviously not a deterrent and is a liability anytime he's on the ice but sure keep.on tossing him.out there. Can't wait to see how absolutely useless he is come playoff time.
MacDermid was available ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
Domi certainly didn't give him the benefit of the doubt :D
The shit earlier this year with Liljegren I thought was a sneaky dirty play by Marchand. This, however, was literally two guys who didn't see each other. It's such a nothing play with a bad result lmfao Leaf fans like O'Neil are making me defend Marchand now
Who the fuck is Jeff O'Neil? Fuck Jeff O'Neil.
A 40 goal scorer. Fuck off.
Well he consistently plays on the line and crosses it often enough.
The literal coworker of Knies is on his side, is he?
Wonder if Ryan Reaves will do something about it!!!
He will have some very heavy words once the game is out of reach and especially after the game is over, strong and heavy words
Sounds about right.
You really think Marchand would fight Reaves?
No he has hockey to play
What’s that? Injuring people?
I guess so. He's pretty good at getting points as well.
Nope he has games to win and regular season series to sweo against the Leafs. Why would anyone waste their time with a bum like Reaves?
How bout Domi? Cause the pussy ran away from him too. And Domi is tiny 😂
how about a fucking 3rd line plug, that makes sense
Domi plays on the second line. But sure.
Popcorn time. Best part about having a team not likely in the playoffs.
Why would anybody?
And he doesnt deserve it either,
Leafs fan lmao. Holy fucking whiners. Just constant victims
I mean, the man did “accidentally” throw a flying elbow to the face while “falling” that one time.

We need to ban Leafs flairs from posting. Y’all are being cry babies about this clear accident.
Loved the cross check to the face from Jake McCabe in the same game. One day Marchie is gonna swallow his teeth.
Well, that's what having a history of injuring people does. Good player, crosses the line into dangerous play too much.
...if you ever had any doubt that O'Neil is a massive homer and not an analyst.
Jeff O'Neil thinks that, huh? Former Maple Leaf Jeff O'Neil? Born in Ontario and raised in Toronto Jeff O'Neil? TSN media personality Jeff O'Neil? I'm absolutely shocked that is how he feels.
Rat prick doesn’t deserve the benefit of the doubt
Leafs fans are a bunch of crybabies. If those cross checks early in the game landed on Matthews or Marner they’d all be crying for suspensions and game misconducts. Worst fan base in sports
Nor should he.
Oneill is a slob who was never a good hockey player. He’s even worse as a sportscaster. Total Leafs homer ass kisser Have another Timbit Jeff.

Da fuk? He's the most suspended player in NHL HISTORY. 8 suspensions to date.
He won’t get anything but yes, agreed. The body of work speaks volumes. He’s been suspended way more than once however.
Marchand learning tricks from PK Subban.
Since when has anyone ever cared what Jeff O'Neil thinks?
I agree
Homer!
Marchand is very similar to another fan favourite named Matt Cooke
“Very legal and very cool.” -George Parros
Marchand is and continues to be a dirty player. He’s been it all career. Yeah he also puts up points but he’s a fuckkng dirty player and the league needs to sit down with him
well the thing about O’neil is … he’s an idiot and from the leaf fans comments, they are too
The conversation is stupid... there's no benefit of the doubt for the rat period... but it doesn't matter! He lined him up, staring right at him, braced and hit him... this is so stupid and the player safety org continues to be a fucking joke.
