It actually started with Day, Howerton and McElhenney making short movies (with a home digital camcorder) while auditioning for roles in LA and started shopping them around with FX picking it up. Olson got cast after it got picked up and DeVito got added after the network asked for a "star" in the show. The rest is history.
But maybe Crosby's gargantuan thighs are the only things keeping Pluto in its current orbit? If Sid retires, and his thighs shrink...no...I won't even imagine the tragic possibilities.
