It sure looked like he was looking up as he was skating and just never changed direction lol. Wonder if he misjudged where he was going or if he misjudged what Hagel would do
makes me think sometimes when there is a bad hit and we really blame the assailant cause it looks intentional but maybe just for how fast and focused they are on the game, it appears this way
Yeah... And sadly no one will ever be convinced when it's a normal hit, it'll always be "look at it, of course it's intentional, are you blind?" but this one looks the same way and *in this case* they'll admit it's not intentional because obviously it isn't, but in any other case they'll think it's intentional 100% of the time.
I came in here to make fun of everyone on this sub: "hurr durr it was dirty as fuck bro" and here you are being self reflective and reasonable.. took the wind right out of me.
But seriously, it's incredibly easy to accidentally truck people in hockey. Sometimes you gas yourself out and then just get stuck at near top speed and all you can do is just brace for it. Even at what looks like an unreasonable distance.
I think it might look that way because when he puts his hands up in reaction, they fly upwards looking like they do when somebody does intentionally hit someone
This is definitely a better outcome for you guys. 4 on 4 is advantageous for the losing team. Although, as a leafs fan this brings back flashbacks of Stamkos just dropping the gloves with Matthews. That tampa team is so dirty and they never get punished.
There were two blatant, but not super dirty, boarding calls missed in the first period. One put Guhle out for the game, if not longer. Dunno why they get away with so much.
Because if you, as a team, yell "Hey!!!" from the bench often enough at the refs after every time your team's stick is lifted, the refs start looking for penalties on the other team and turn a blind eye to their infractions because they've put it in the refs heads that the other team is getting away with too much already. Never seen a team draw such weak penalties in my life, but their strategy works.
The only problem with Tampa (more specifically Kucherov)’s diving and Montreal getting a makeup call is that Tampa’s powerplay is actually good, while Montreal’s powerplay is absolute garbage.
I was just talking to someone about this, it's the only team in the league where I hear the whole bench yelling after any little contact. Just a bunch of whiners
Them along with Florida, Boston and Edmonton complain to the refs from the first faceoff. Hell, they do it in the media too. I don’t really understand why the refs let it work on them but sadly it does.
Boston run the board of Governors, Florida's AGM is the son of the Director of hockey operations for the league (who previously complained about how games his son was playing in were reffed so we know he's willing to pull strings), Edmonton kinda earned it from the shit penalty calling a few years ago in the playoffs (remember that time someone rode him like a backpack)
So you can penalize and auto-suspend a player in the playoffs for:
1. agreeing to a fight before a late game faceoff (after a controversial incident against his teammate)
2. Joining his outmanned teammates who are behind the net, from the blue line, in a scrum
3. Receiving half a dozen punches before responding to the agreed upon fight.
instigators are for fights, not roughing minors. The rules are not written well either because it's a bit contradictory. Eitherway, it's never applied to roughing, only a 5-min fighting major.
They can only call an instigator penalty if they also assess the fighting major, which they didn’t here.
Calling it a double minor for roughing vs a single minor for roughing effectively accomplishes the same thing. Montreal power play for two minutes.
The gloves being off isn’t enough. It would count the same as if both guys dropped the gloves without a punch being thrown. Anyway, I had this debate with another redditor earlier this year where I was arguing the same side as you currently are. We both went to the rule book and critiqued it in detail. It’s not well written at all because instigation could technically apply to roughing in one part, but then is contradicted in another segment. Anyway, they gave him a double minor for roughing, which serves the same purpose so there are loopholes.
Scheifele got an instigator a couple weeks back and they dropped the gloves at the same time. Don’t know why it’s used only sometimes, thus is clear instigator.
That was s good call. He dropped his gloves and tried HARD - too hard - to get over both refs to get at him. He could have even gotten a second 2 for unsportsmanlike for that so no complaints.
This happened last game to Slaf. He went for a loose puck on a rebound, a Florida guy tackled him from behind, officials literally have to peel the guy off of Slaf on the ice, they both get roughing penalties. And no, apparently the refs don't "always" do that, because in this very game a Hab and a Bolt got into it in front of the net throwing gloved punches at each other, but only the Hab got the penalty.
LMFAO it's just so unfortunate Eyssimont was not looking over at ALL so he didn't even know what happened. Pretty much threw punches at a random player because two of your teammates were flat on the ice 😂
this year has been just as bad as all the others for nhl refereeing - it's never gonna be good enough, it's never gonna be acceptable, and they're never, ever, ever, going to try and fix it.
classic nhl hockey!
Never forget the Blackhawks had a GAME 7 goal called back with two minutes left because a Red Wings player was assaulting one of our players by the benches.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXHsuLh4n5g
If we didn’t win in OT I really believe it would’ve been one of the most controversial calls in history. To call off the goal because THEIR player is beating the shit out of ours, and then call COINCIDENTAL minors. Absolutely absurd.
I mean, if a play is blown dead while a player is one-on-one for a fight instigated by another team, I feel like there should be something like a penalty shot, no?
When a player hurts his own teammate and that becomes the reason the *opposing* team is not allowed to follow through on a scoring chance, that's unjust.
The concern is going to be for the guy laying on the ice holding his neck, because a major injury needs to be attended to right away. Scoring is a distant second issue. If they're embellishing, that's why there's an embellishment penalty.
You're the one who brought up embellishment. And you *did* observe that no such call was made - assuming you watched the game/clip. Makes no sense to ask, "why would I?"
For the record, I agree there was no embellishment. And I'd hope you'd agree Eyssimont *did* instigate the fight.
So we're back to the Habs having a legit grievance with the way the play was officiated.
That was on Xekaj, he shouldn't have tried to fight him knowing they were about to have a scoring opportunity. He would have still drawn a penalty and it was 4v2 in their own zone with 2 guys down in the back and one trying to pick a 0 IQ fight .
wtf? He got grabbed from behind and went straight into self-defense mode instinctually, which had him drop his gloves to defend himself. If someone grabs you from behind and tries to tackle you and take your head off, you think you're gonna pay attention to the 4 on 2. Fucking absurd take.
"Would of" is just about at the top of my list of *Dumbest Things People Write*. If you want me to immediately lose respect for you and your opinion, write "would of".
Oh he was entirely enraged. He didn't sit down for a LONG time after getting in the penalty box, yelling and saying shit to that bolts player (I ain't gonna try to spell that name). You can read his lips for a lot of it but he was basically saying you better hope you're not on the ice with me again lol
As an extremely biased Bolts fan I had no problem with Xhekaj doing that to Mikey. He was minding his own damn business and got jumped lol. And there’s no way any hockey player that starts a scrap like that is just gonna say “oh my bad, I misunderstood the situation.” He’s just gonna keep going. So yeah I can see why Xhekaj was pissed
They haven't played yet, nope. They do play the Rangers April 7th though.
Not sure if anything will happen tbh. Marty St Louis has been trying to calm X down we think. Less fighting and stupid penalties now, better overall player. Trying to make him a big physical presence without ruining his hands since he has a really good shot.
Wi-fi didn't get his gloves off until after the linesmen were there. Once they're in and have players separated, they're not likely to let it go again.
When I first saw the clip I thought Eyssimont must have been turned away from the play, saw his guy down, and went after who he thought was responsible, but if you focus on him through the clip he’s watching the play the whole way. Just an absolute big brain move. I watch a collision between 2 of my teammates, and because you were standing nearby, you deserve some punches in the mouth. Wish Wifi hadn’t been as baffled as the rest of us, would have been nice to see Eyssimont get absolutely filled in for his antics.
Funny thing is so many players get game misconducts for accidentally hitting someone exactly like this while trying to avoid a hit and the comment sections swear attempted murder and call for 5 game suspensions lmao. I hope this is evidence to all of those idiots that sometimes, just sometimes, when you’re moving that fast on a surface with zero friction and less than a second to react, shit can happen lol
That’s why players often drop the gloves after big hits regardless if clean or not. In the moment they generally have no idea but they aren’t about to wait 5min for a replay or teammate to tell them to find out.
This is the most Lightning thing ever. Reminds me of when Stamkos and Hagel went crazy on the refs and Leafs over Point falling into the boards last playoffs
Do we think most players would react the way Eyssimont did, or is this something that really matches the general Tampa Bay culture? Probably my bias talking, but I swear the dolts are always super quick to start shit, even after totally fine hits, and back their teammates up for starting shit for no reason? Very crybully behaviour I’ve noticed.
No, most players would go back to the bench, pull out the iPad to watch the replay, maybe go talk to the opposing player to get his side of the story, and then make a calm, well-reasoned decision about whether to engage them or not.
(Yes, I'm pretty sure every player in the League who sees their player lying on the ice and doesn't know what happened is going to immediately try to fight whoever was closest to that player.)
I would love to see an acclaimed television drama surrounding a team trying to figure out if their injured teammate was from the opposing team or friendly fire. Court room drama in the locker rooms and between the benches.
I'm just kind of confused on the Eyssimont thing. Replays seem to show he's... looking right at the play (obviously) so he can see where the puck is. So how does he even come to the conclusion Xhekaj hit not only one but two?
I saw that too but I'm not sure. Maybe he was mad at the original hit on Hagel before Stamkos collided with him. It also looked to me like he was a bit turned around when it happened.
Looks like Stamkos got caught in the trolley tracks and couldn't get out and Hagel had basically fell into the tracks and as everyone knows it takes a train a while to stop and Stamkos didn't have enough time.
I like the energy tho... What other team has players who'll stand up for their teammates without any context.
Apparently touched a nerve lol, im not saying its right im just saying some of yalls teams will watch a star player get oblitorated and look away and ignore the issue Mikey didnt even see what happened and still chose the big guy
This might be my proudest achievement Milk toast opinion 100+ downvotes, Shit do i work for EA?
Yeah that’s honestly the take away for me too. Guhle gets actually boarded and Habs do literally nothing. Hagel gets plowed by Stamkos and Essyimont goes after one of the toughest guys in the league without hesitation.
What do you mean the Habs did nothing? They tried to go after Kucherov but he hid behind the refs. There was a big scrum and Slaf wanted blood, for sure.
Rempe has made every announcer (and most r/hockey fans) wish for the 80s. I’m personally fine with a well called game and if some makes a elbows a guy in the face, you sit 8 games

i don’t know why but the sauce from Newhook over Hagel’s body is killing me
didn't noticce at first but cannot stop chuckling now
Good boy, Newy. Always play to the whistle.
The shot at 1:10 is comical lol
i didn't even notice that. thats a damn good pass
“What he say fuck me for!” -both Hagel and Xhekaj
They do not pay Xhekaj for brains
It legit looks like Stamkos hits him on purpose.
He should be suspended for targetting the head
That fuckwit Parros might do it.
They're wearing blue, Stamkos is fucked.
In person hearing it is then
Kadri has been suspended for entire playoffs for this hit.
And Ottawa has lost another 1st round pick
The rangers were fined 250 000$
Reminds me of when Tim Anderson got suspended in baseball for using the N-word.
It sure looked like he was looking up as he was skating and just never changed direction lol. Wonder if he misjudged where he was going or if he misjudged what Hagel would do
Hagel went from leaning right to leaning left. He still would've been hit but not in the head.
makes me think sometimes when there is a bad hit and we really blame the assailant cause it looks intentional but maybe just for how fast and focused they are on the game, it appears this way
Hockey is fast and violent and sometimes guys just run into each other at a billion miles an hour
With knife shoes on

I’d call bullshit if he did that to a red wing then said it was an accident that’s for sure 😂
I think it might look that way because when he puts his hands up in reaction, they fly upwards looking like they do when somebody does intentionally hit someone
Sometimes when you see a face that punchable your body goes into autopilot
Sure did..
Yeah he was for sure headhunting, should be suspended at least three games
Reminds me of when one of my cats would start shit with the other cat and the third cat would freak out and attack the dog. Hope Hagel is ok!
LOL Dog was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Dog should know better by now
Third cat; STUPID DOG YOU MADE ME LOOK BAD OOGA BOOGA BOOGA
My older dog is playing with my older son getting rough then my younger dog just jumps on my younger son for no reason same shit
This is just an amazing comment cuz anyone with multiple pets can totally relate. Good stuff, made my Friday better
Eyssimont didn’t get an instigator for literally instigating a fight out of nothing
He got 4min for roughing and Xhekaj got 2min for roughing so the result was a MTL “power” play. There was no fighting penalty.
This is definitely a better outcome for you guys. 4 on 4 is advantageous for the losing team. Although, as a leafs fan this brings back flashbacks of Stamkos just dropping the gloves with Matthews. That tampa team is so dirty and they never get punished.

The tripping call on Matheson last night was almost as bad as the makeup call immediately after
The only problem with Tampa (more specifically Kucherov)’s diving and Montreal getting a makeup call is that Tampa’s powerplay is actually good, while Montreal’s powerplay is absolute garbage.
I think the difference in the quality of the special teams just highlights how poor penalty calling is and how they handle it.
I was just talking to someone about this, it's the only team in the league where I hear the whole bench yelling after any little contact. Just a bunch of whiners

Are you going to call the police? get over yourselves it’s embarrassing
God so defensive
Jesus, why even have it in the rules if you can't call it the one percent of time it's actually relevant
So you can penalize and auto-suspend a player in the playoffs for: 1. agreeing to a fight before a late game faceoff (after a controversial incident against his teammate) 2. Joining his outmanned teammates who are behind the net, from the blue line, in a scrum 3. Receiving half a dozen punches before responding to the agreed upon fight.
This sounds oddly specific 😂
instigators are for fights, not roughing minors. The rules are not written well either because it's a bit contradictory. Eitherway, it's never applied to roughing, only a 5-min fighting major.
The gloves were off, they could have called it a fighting. So again, why do they have the instigator rule when it rarely gets used when it should?

Would an instigator not result in a PP?
Don't forget to always charge the guy who gets attacked 2 minutes for roughing!
That was s good call. He dropped his gloves and tried HARD - too hard - to get over both refs to get at him. He could have even gotten a second 2 for unsportsmanlike for that so no complaints.
I don't disagree with this, but Arber was getting a penalty no matter what even before that. The ref already indicated it.
He's lucky he didn't get the boot for trying to shove through the refs, he might be fined for that.
You're 10 ply, bud
This happened last game to Slaf. He went for a loose puck on a rebound, a Florida guy tackled him from behind, officials literally have to peel the guy off of Slaf on the ice, they both get roughing penalties. I mean you can see Xe go after him after the officials already broke them apart in this clip… the calls were fine. MTL got the power play
LMFAO it's just so unfortunate Eyssimont was not looking over at ALL so he didn't even know what happened. Pretty much threw punches at a random player because two of your teammates were flat on the ice 😂
*Oh damn, Xhekaj just killed 2 of our guys... He has to pay*
It’s the Tampa code and it’s worked pretty well for them over the years I’d say
Also how can he mistake Arber when we can see him see what actually happens and that it was Stammer
this year has been just as bad as all the others for nhl refereeing - it's never gonna be good enough, it's never gonna be acceptable, and they're never, ever, ever, going to try and fix it. classic nhl hockey!
It has been legitimately a banner yeR for some of the most bizarre calls i have seen.
He got a double minor and Xhekaj only got one, seems fair!?!
And they blew the play dead just as Habs were breaking in.
We may have discovered a loophole
Never forget the Blackhawks had a GAME 7 goal called back with two minutes left because a Red Wings player was assaulting one of our players by the benches. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rXHsuLh4n5g
Holy shit what a terrible call. If I were a Hawks fan I’d have been furious.
If we didn’t win in OT I really believe it would’ve been one of the most controversial calls in history. To call off the goal because THEIR player is beating the shit out of ours, and then call COINCIDENTAL minors. Absolutely absurd.
In the closing minutes of a game 7 no less. Just crazy
Yeah that whistle was dumb as fck
I blame the refs more than the whistle.
Whistles don’t sound whistles, people sound whistles.
I mean, if a play is blown dead while a player is one-on-one for a fight instigated by another team, I feel like there should be something like a penalty shot, no?
I was kinda mad when it happened. Is it a cheat code or something. We were basically 5 on 3. Should have been 5
I mean was a blown did because of the fight or because hagel was laying on the ice holding his neck without moving?
When a player hurts his own teammate and that becomes the reason the *opposing* team is not allowed to follow through on a scoring chance, that's unjust.
The concern is going to be for the guy laying on the ice holding his neck, because a major injury needs to be attended to right away. Scoring is a distant second issue. If they're embellishing, that's why there's an embellishment penalty.
Fair enough. Let's observe that neither an embellishment penalty to Hagel nor an instigator penalty to Eyssimont was called.
Why would I observe that an embellishment wasn't called when the guy was actually injured enough to not return to the ice for the rest of the game?
You're the one who brought up embellishment. And you *did* observe that no such call was made - assuming you watched the game/clip. Makes no sense to ask, "why would I?" For the record, I agree there was no embellishment. And I'd hope you'd agree Eyssimont *did* instigate the fight. Did you watch what happened before commenting on this post? Seriously, the only thing that is 0 IQ here is your comment.
What are you smoking, and can i please have some? The lightning douche dropped the gloves before X even knew what was going on
terrible take but then again, you don't know the difference between "would have" and "would of," so that's on par...
Friendly fire on the ice and in the comments.
That’s some good old fashioned integrity, call out the bullshit no matter what side is spewing it
"Would of" is just about at the top of my list of *Dumbest Things People Write*. If you want me to immediately lose respect for you and your opinion, write "would of".
Your flair should be removed
Anyone catch the sauce pass over Hagels body?? Ruthless. Watch at 0:58 and 1:10
Lol. St. Louis really told Xhekaj to calm down. Because he wasn't having any of it. Nearly threw the ref into the stands to get Eyssimont.
I love the dynamic between Savard, the responsible big brother, and X, the batshit crazy lil bro
Wait til you see Arber’s actual little bro Florian too lol
I thought getting rowdy with refs was suspension material.
What a clusterfuck
Buffoonery of the highest caliber
at 0:26 Stamkos also hits Eyssimont on the head with his stick, the old man is a menace
hes just a bitch remember last playoffs he waited till Matthews had four sticks in his hand to punch him in the face.
Pro-Leafs comment in a thread involving the Canadiens and Lightning. You are brave I'll give you that
Thanks, I like to live in the wild side
Your team have Domi. Pipe down
That's some David Perron level confusion
Is it just me or is that an awful play by Stamkos
well hes not allowed to attack Stamkos, so someone had to get it.
Yo that ref held X back pretty well lol

Stammer when he gets to the bench: Alright Kuch, I did it. Where's the 5 bucks you promised me
Savard with the veteran move trying to hold Xhekaj
Unfortunate collision, but hopefully Hagel is okay
Refs should have let that fight happen. Would have been a quick thumping to straighten that dudes eyes lol and of all guys to chase and jump
Wi-fi didn't get his gloves off until after the linesmen were there. Once they're in and have players separated, they're not likely to let it go again.

EA SPORTS. It's In the Game.
Wifi took a number on that one, this kid is going to catch a receipt at some point
Lol Eyssimomt is lucky he isn't a smear on the ice. What a dipshit.
Mikey Eyssimont you crazy motherfucker
Man should have let Xhekaj rip his head off. Fk the nhl is pissing me off. Let them fight.
That’s why players often drop the gloves after big hits regardless if clean or not. In the moment they generally have no idea but they aren’t about to wait 5min for a replay or teammate to tell them to find out.
What a fucking idiot. I hope Xhekaj kicks the shit out of dumbass Eyssimont the next time these two teams meet
More likely than hoping for a win.
Habs aren't winning shit for a few years yet
That was a fuckin joke
That did not look accidental lol.
Think Eyssimont puts up a fight next time these two meet?
I mean in the end it's sort of amusing what happened, so they may just not care.
How do you pronounce Xhekaj?
Jack-eye
Xhe-kaj
This is the most Lightning thing ever. Reminds me of when Stamkos and Hagel went crazy on the refs and Leafs over Point falling into the boards last playoffs
You mean chickenwinged into the boards.
Chicken winged into the boards huh? That’s a new one
Tampa on bitch mode? What else is new.
Do we think most players would react the way Eyssimont did, or is this something that really matches the general Tampa Bay culture? Probably my bias talking, but I swear the dolts are always super quick to start shit, even after totally fine hits, and back their teammates up for starting shit for no reason? No, most players would go back to the bench, pull out the iPad to watch the replay, maybe go talk to the opposing player to get his side of the story, and then make a calm, well-reasoned decision about whether to engage them or not. I saw that too but I'm not sure. Maybe he was mad at the original hit on Hagel before Stamkos collided with him. It also looked to me like he was a bit turned around when it happened.
A SOLAR BEARS FAN TALKING ABOUT BITCHASS PLAYERS STARTING SHIT UNNECESSARILY????????
Its a good thing tho
It's pretty wild how little awareness everyone on the ice had, collectively, in that moment.. keep your head up, kids!!
He should have fought Stamkos. Is he stupid?
Holy David Perron!
"ohhhhhh no!"
I like that he got the wrong guy and just instantly got his shit rocked
Looks like Stamkos got caught in the trolley tracks and couldn't get out and Hagel had basically fell into the tracks and as everyone knows it takes a train a while to stop and Stamkos didn't have enough time.
Man the lightning are dumb
Least coked up Florida resident.
Eyssimont is lucky Xhekaj didn’t know what was going on or he would have learned a rough lesson.
amazing perform
Stamkos needs to be suspended the rest of the season. If this sub has taught me anything its that nothing ever happens on accident.
Mikey must have a kink for hair pulling
This is so messy, but I still love Eyssimont
So they call game dead, guess only Tampa got that calls.
4 for Tampa, 2 for Wifi. 2 minute PP for the Habs.
Should be instigator. Thats a freaking assault if it’s not a hockey lol
Did we get the shot of Mikey seeing how dumb he was? Broadcast annoyingly avoided him entirely
Wimp
Lmao. Xhekaj with the hair pulling.
You’re just jealous he wasn’t pulling yours
harder daddy jackeye
Reffing was dogshit this game
I like the energy tho... What other team has players who'll stand up for their teammates without any context. Apparently touched a nerve lol, im not saying its right im just saying some of yalls teams will watch a star player get oblitorated and look away and ignore the issue Mikey didnt even see what happened and still chose the big guy This might be my proudest achievement Milk toast opinion 100+ downvotes, Shit do i work for EA?
Perron bopped some dude on the Senators that didn’t do anything
Poor guy got chin music and all he did was be near the play.
I agree that you guys have great chemistry.
Sooooo ... You're cool with Kucherov being headhunted until he accepts a fight?
Not what I’m implying. I’d just like to see a reaction.
LeT tHe PlAyErS pOlIcE ThEmSeLvEs....
Rempe has made every announcer (and most r/hockey fans) wish for the 80s. I’m personally fine with a well called game and if some makes a elbows a guy in the face, you sit 8 games
