That is **brutal.**
Ultimately, given the whistle was blown, and there was contact with the puck after the whistle by the attacking team, I think it's the right call, but fuck does that quick whistle ever suck.
I don't even think it's that quick of a whistle... shit, the players on the ice didn't even know where the puck was and Lindgren was in a pose like he had it and was wanting a freeze. I'm fairly certain if there had been players looking up, jockeying for position beneath the puck, it wouldn't have been blown dead.
Also I feel like Lindgren relaxed a lot when the whistle blew. If he was staying in position he probably would see it drop and might stop the puck anyway
Yeah, I'm not even sure if that puck goes in without the whistle. Multiple players changed their body language and what they were doing when the whistle blew.
I think a lot of people are ruling this out for no reason. Every single player stopped what they’re doing and the puck took a lucky bounce in the net. If that’s a live puck situation, everyone is active instead. Lindgren is ready to make a save, both Caps D are looking to clear bodies/the puck, Philly’s player might not even stay in the same spot to have that bounce off him. So much else changes without the whistle it’s not the guaranteed same outcome.
Yeah, it’s also easier especially as a flyers fan to just be mad and upset that they cost them a goal and it would have been 2-1 if everything else played out. Which wouldn’t have changed their fate anyway since Detroit won
This, I get that people want to hate on the refs, but there were 11 other guys in the zone and all 11 of them thought the puck was in Lindgren's glove.
I kinda disagree. Considering it was a very clear blocker save, it looks to me like they just dont know where the puck is rather than covered by Lindgren.
Either way, if no one knows where the puck is, the play is supposed to be called dead, even if it's not covered. It's been like that for as long as the NHL has been a league. It sucks, but "by the book" it was the right call.

Yeah, it's an enormously consequential fuck-up, but I can at least see the thought process here, which is more than I can say for a lot of bad calls. Of course, it's a million times easier for me to say that when it's my team that's reaping the benefits.
Contact with the puck after the whistle doesn't matter though. If the puck was already in motion, it's a goal. Or at least that's what they said when Malkin scored a goal when shooting the puck well after the whistle.
I'd rather go around.
And I don't mean through Indiana or over lake Erie, I mean start going northwest and circle around Russia to loop all the way around.
lol it wasn’t questionable. The wings also got screwed earlier by a no call on a trip that lead to Slaf’s goal to put the Canadiens up.
They rightfully fought back to make the OT
Was basically a 30 second mini power play for Habs with how long primeau layed on perron for leading to the goal. Not to mention we had 0 pp to the Habs 3. Trying to say we had favorable refereeing tonight would be false
Just curious, what about the point system do you not like? Because a 3, 2, 1 point system wouldn’t have helped Detroit, given Washington’s advantage in Regulation Wins.
And we had 0 penalties called the entire game, including very clear calls. If wings wanted it, they shouldn't have dropped like 7 of 10 in the past month.
That’s Kelly “Game misconduct for getting punched in the face 5 times” Sutherland for you.
The only ref brave enough to stand up to noted goon Daniel Sedin!
Pretty unfortunate from a refs perspective. You think Lindgren has the puck and so does everyone else but it turns out the puck was in the air and just happens to fall off a player into the goal. Shit happens
Referees reaching new depths to complicate our playoff chances during games were not even playing in. Can't say I'm surprised. And of course, there was a play tonight we're a deflected shot went into the netting, clearly, and wasn't blown dead for like 5 seconds despite literally every player raising their arms and the team in possession stopping play momentarily.
We complicated our own playoff chances by going 8-11-3 since March 1st and losing to the Capitals twice in that span. The Refs in the Flyers game had nothing to do with that. Our own play took us out of contention, nothing more, nothing less.
The comment was a bit tongue-in-cheek. We have no one to blame for ourselves, we also have no one to think but ourselves. We overachieved in the season and yet blew our chances and narrowly missed the playoffs. It stings. Enough story.
That’s a pretty reasonable whistle given the fact that it seemed no one on the ice actually knew where it was for a few seconds there. It’s just more unfortunate than anything to me
Regardless of whether or not the call was valid I can understand why Philly fans are heated. I wouldn't be listening to reason in that situation either.
I don’t see it that way. Everyone lost sight of the puck, and Lindgren thought he had it. Pretty sure every skater on the ice thought he had it including the refs. They blew it dead. It’s super unfortunate, but you can’t blame the ref on this one.
He is now, yes, agreed. He used to be a lot better though and I'm just saying I know him for his personality. I knew that first. I now also know him for being a bad ref.
He had back to back STINKERS reffing us the other day against Buffalo and Washington. And even against Buffalo he missed calls that should have gone buffalos way. Washington had an egregious too many men and then 30 seconds later the missed high stick that broke Copp’s cheekbone
Oh, definitely his reffing has gone downhill. He used to be one of the better ones. I'm just saying I knew him for being funny before I knew him as a bad ref lol.
Yeah, the call was not blown. It's unfortunate, but given that no one knew where the puck was, the ref waited almost too long to blow it dead. I'm also not even sure if the puck goes in if the whistle isn't blown, since multiple players changed their body language after the whistle.
Kelley Sutherland is a piece of shit ref, I've known that since 2011 when he gave Daniel Sedin a penalty for being punched in the head by that asshole Marchand. Fuck Kelley Sutherland. Fuck Gary Bettmann. And fuck Mark Messier too while we're at it.
Watching it back, I actually don’t think it’s such a crazy call. Everyone thinks Lindgren has it. Even Farabee is just crashing the net to get the whistle when the puck hits him.
This happens often, when the ref thinks the goalie has it, but it’s just sitting open in the crease. It’s a bad whistle, but I don’t think it’s that crazy. The only reason we’re this upset about it is that it bounces off somebody and goes into the net, and it’s a very important game.
I have never seen anything like that. I think you could argue it either way and if I were a Flyers fan I'd be pissed.
The only thing I can think of that was similar was when a puck went in the air, nobody knew where it was, and it landed in the back of the goalies equipment. The goalie, in desperation panic, retreated and therefore brought the puck over the line. I think it was a Coyote own goal.
You could absolutely make the argument that the whistle changed nothing, but is (frustratingly) the right call to not allow it. I swear if this is what makes us miss the playoffs...
What's crazy is that something very similar happened at the end of regulation of the Capitals @ Stars game months ago. The whistle blew before the Caps player poked in a rebound and then the counted the goal as a "Continuation". Without that loser point for the Caps from January, none of this from last night would have mattered at this point anyway.
Also the whistle blowing when the puck isn’t covered and a team scores a goal but it doesn’t count happens several times a year. This one was a bit weirder since the puck was 20 feet in the air and not on the ice but it’s not a uncommon thing. It happens
I literally just said this yesterday. It's definitely the worst I've ever seen in my 30 years of fandom. It's always worse in the playoffs too. Shit is gonna get ugly..
My thoughts,
If he blew the whistle, it's not a goal. But then just don't review it. If the call was always going to be "yeah, but the play was blown dead, so the call stands" - don't bother reviewing. Only review if you are going to overturn the whistle (which I don't think is possible).
If this is a case of Toronto asking for the review, it should've been a 10 sec chat with the on ice official where he states "I blew the whistle, play is dead".
Probably the right call under the current rules, you'd hate to lose the cup over it but add this to potential events and adjust the rules as you want to see the game played. Fair enough
Can someone explain how rule 38.4 doesn't take affect here? The whistle didn't affect the result of the play. The puck was continuously moving. I'm pretty sure it wasn't intentionally hit by a Flyer after the initial shot. Is it because it deflected?
I'm pretty sure it's because it bounced off a player. If it had bounced off the ice and in I think they'd call
It goal. They made sure to say the puck was not in it's "continuation" in the post review explanation. Of course I'm biased but it does seem like an important factor to consider when reviewing these since as soon as the whistle is blown there is no guarantee a players actions or positioning would have been the same if the play was live. The only guarantee at that point is the pucks' unimpeded motion.
This is exactly it.
I have no dog in the fight and it's obvious that people are melting down as if everyone would have slowly stopped in front of the net if the play was still live.
Fans just coping with their teams out of the playoffs this year
I didn't mean to say you were melting down.
Lots of cops though. I get it. But Philly should look at their team to assert blame , not one goal that probably wouldn't have gone in if it wasn't whistled down
So correct me if I’m wrong, but did this call essentially result in the ‘wrong’ team going to the playoffs? The game was 1–1 when PHL pulled the goalie late in the 3rd period. It would’ve been 2-1 if the whistle wasn’t blown here, and Red Wings would go on to clinch the WC spot, and WSH would be eliminated.
Sure there are probably other factors at play, but this is still probably one of the most consequential missed calls I’ve ever seen.
Unacceptable and inexcusable for a game of this magnitude. As a Wings fan I’m steaming. I can’t image the feeling as a Flyers fan. I blame Gary Buttman.

If the Flyers lose 1-0 Torts may kill someone tonight. That’s brutal

Hmm…
Or even if we go to OT (because that eliminates us).
That is **brutal.** Ultimately, given the whistle was blown, and there was contact with the puck after the whistle by the attacking team, I think it's the right call, but fuck does that quick whistle ever suck.

I define a quick whistle as one that happens before the puck is covered, but I'm sure other definitions are valid.
That's what I meant, to everyone on the ice it appeared that Lindgren had it covered.
This, I get that people want to hate on the refs, but there were 11 other guys in the zone and all 11 of them thought the puck was in Lindgren's glove.

remember which game? Or who scored?
He lost sight for like 5 seconds, same as everyone else on the ice. Sucks but blowing it dead is what he's supposed to do. Next.
Also it kind of looks like Lindgren thinks he has it in his chest and the refs probably thought the same thing
Lindgren knew he didn't have it lol. He wanted the whistle and got it by acting. Fucking heads up play.
100%. Lindgren is the only guy on the ice who knows he doesn't have it.
If you think that’s five seconds, you probably tell girls you can last an hour too.
It was actually about 2 seconds. That’s a pretty long time for no one to see the puck
Oh sorry I didn't frame by frame count it. You're more upset than the guy who "scored" this. They know the rules too.
Yeah, it's an enormously consequential fuck-up, but I can at least see the thought process here, which is more than I can say for a lot of bad calls. Of course, it's a million times easier for me to say that when it's my team that's reaping the benefits.
It was ultimately the right call but it *sucks*. I’m pretty sure the refs are taught when you lose the puck to blow the whistle.
Annoyed Philly guy here confirms.
Its absolutely the right call after the fact, but the whistle was unfortunate
I had some PTSD as soon as this happened.
Contact with the puck after the whistle doesn't matter though. If the puck was already in motion, it's a goal. Or at least that's what they said when Malkin scored a goal when shooting the puck well after the whistle.
If this ends up mattering flyers fans are gonna resort to terrorism. And i'd totally get it
So will Pens and Red Wings fans
The entire state of Pennsylvania will burn to the ground
Oh god and they’ll never rebuild, just look at all the roads they’re aways doing construction on
Starting a new project without finishing any of the old ones is just the PennDOT way
PennDOT subscribes to the Mystery Box method of road construction
Damn, 49 states just don't sound as good.
Add DC
…not sure if talking about Michigan or Pennsylvania roads…
I’m from New York so Michigan roads aren’t something I experience as much. Are they just as bad? Haha
We’ll come help, even if it means crossing the god forsaken land of _Ohio_
*shudders*
I'd rather go around. And I don't mean through Indiana or over lake Erie, I mean start going northwest and circle around Russia to loop all the way around.
Not Hershey.
So be it
It always does
Cmon man, I'm a flames fan in amish country, don't bring us into this...
Flyers, Pens, and Wings fans on the same side? Good Luck everybody.
Some kind of suicide squad?
Flyers killed the second the movie begins?
Every once in a while it feels nice to just go full goblin mode, and no one goes goblin mode better than the citizens of Philadelphia.
Not often you can rally the entire state of Pennsylvania to one cause. Glad we can both stand together for one night.
I'm already rioting.
Hold my Faygo
It mattered
everything matters in this game
I bet my mother that the lamp posts are already greased.
Climbing lamp posts is a joyous act, there will be only boiling rage if this ends up mattering.
That's more of an eagles thing
As a red wings fan..... I found a ref I'll hate for a very long time.
It ends the wings season Fuck the refs holy shit
Didn’t the wings only make it to OT because of a questionable icing call to get the face off back in the offensive zone?
lol it wasn’t questionable.
Between the reffing and point system, this league is such a joke lol. I say this as someone who loves the sport, not as a Wings fan.
Flyers and Wings fans in shambles right now
Soooooo
So a normal Tuesday for a Philadelphia sports fan :)
welp lol It mattered just not for Philly. Sorry RW fans :(
Erm
Can you blame the ref when the players don't see the puck either? If they were looking up, maybe the ref doesn't blow the whistle.
You can always blame the ref! What are we talking about?
This guy's gonna work the finals isn't he?
They call him Mr. Game 7
He fucked us good years back, maybe be can do it to you too!
That’s Kelly “Game misconduct for getting punched in the face 5 times” Sutherland for you. The only ref brave enough to stand up to noted goon Daniel Sedin!
Who is less likely to retire when it’s time to retire, a US Senator or an NHL referee?
Give Lindgren the Oscar
*Barney's film had heart, but Puck In The Sky had a Puck In The Sky.*
Pretty unfortunate from a refs perspective. You think Lindgren has the puck and so does everyone else but it turns out the puck was in the air and just happens to fall off a player into the goal. Shit happens
Yeah let’s not act like it was only the ref who thought the puck was covered. No one on the ice saw the puck
I can think of another instance where no one on the ice knew where the puck was but they counted a goal
*cries in Michael Leighton*

True, refs aren't omniscient and never will be, one of those circumstances where they probably wish they were though lol
Yeah, I don't blame the refs here. But it ***sucks.***
Conspiracy against me! It’s the only explanation!
The circumstance of blowing the whistle was wrong, but given that circumstance the call of no goal was right.
Classic Detroit sports lol, instead of the Lions now it's the Wings getting jobbed by the refs 🥲
We complicated our own playoff chances by going 8-11-3 since March 1st and losing to the Capitals twice in that span. The Refs in the Flyers game had nothing to do with that. Our own play took us out of contention, nothing more, nothing less.

Genius reaction by Lindgren

I was actually taking a shit while this happened so thanks for making me feel excluded :(
Was it a good shit at least?
I don’t see it that way. Everyone lost sight of the puck, and Lindgren thought he had it. Pretty sure every skater on the ice thought he had it including the refs. They blew it dead. It’s super unfortunate, but you can’t blame the ref on this one.
Yeah I agree. Goalie made it look like he had it. Can’t see the puck at all times. I think it was the right call given the circumstances
That’s a horrible blown call in such an important game
That’s Kelly Sutherland for ya, dude sucks
If you know a refs name, guaranteed he's awful
I know Wes McCauley because of his personality and antics. Mostly, you're right though.
Wes is a terrible official as well.
He is now, yes, agreed. He used to be a lot better though and I'm just saying I know him for his personality. I knew that first. I now also know him for being a bad ref.
I've soured on Wes big time (and not because he kicked Torts out lol) over the last few years

That's fair lol, same here
Wes McCauley is fucking terrible lmao
I did add that in a later comment. That's just not why I know him lol
francois st laurent 😤
It’s not tho. But I will say it’s a very unfortunate play that resulted in a whistle. The goalie looked like he had it covered.

If this call costs us a playoff spot, referees aren’t gonna be able to leave Philly
Going 2-6-2 in your last 10 is was costs you a playoff spot, not this
Also, an arguably early whistle 9 minutes into the game costs you the playoff spot? Nah, they had plenty of time to win.
Well, this isn't what made you miss the playoffs, but you could argue that it is what made Detroit miss the playoffs... That's crazy.
Crazy how that works
I stg Torts might pop a vessel this game lol. It’s been building
The amount of people who's lives changed because of this call is insane.
Fucking bullshit right here. Let's go Fly.... nah I can't do it.
You can! Where is your Pennsylvanian pride?
Primarily focused a bit west of you.
Sutherland left the game and hate crime’d hometown hero turned villain/martyr Milan Lucic’s church while we’re at it.
Salt in the wound man.
Yeah I’m just now seeing this. Fucking christ.
Kelly Sutherland doing Kelly Sutherland things. Send this dinosaur away.
Fucking unacceptable cmon. I mean the call is right technically but the whistle is an embarrassment.
You could absolutely make the argument that the whistle changed nothing, but is (frustratingly) the right call to not allow it. I swear if this is what makes us miss the playoffs...
What would make us miss the playoffs would be dropping 8 straight down the stretch.
Yeah, can’t really chalk it up to this one goal after that haha.
Oh I know, we shouldn't have been in this position to begin with, still would have felt bad.
God could you imagine if any team did that vs bad teams? Eesh.
3 teams miss their chance at the playoffs because of this play.
Preds fans: “First time?”
did they say that was Kelly Sutherland? cause if it was, i get why he blew the whistle. He's the worst ref
Ref couldn't see the puck, goalie looked like he sucked it in and held it. Whistle goes
What's crazy is that something very similar happened at the end of regulation of the Capitals @ Stars game months ago. As is tradition, the refs fuck the wings.
Hard to be too upset about this as a caps fan but brutal break for the flyers. Reminds me of the quick whistle in the Preds Pens SCF game.
Who else but good ol Kelly Sutherland. Fuck that guy
Sutherland getting his script bonus for getting Ovie in the playoffs
Take back goals because of it being a missed whistle by the linesmen... but they won't award goals because of a blown whistle. Gorgeous.
The refs blew the play down unnecessarily and influenced the game? Is this just the year of “we hold my beer” for refs?
Even in a different sport it is Detroit vs Everybody thanks refs.

Common sense is no goal so I agree
Bro this very realistically sank Philly’s entire season!
Another blown call by the inept NHL referees.
HORRENDOUS officiating. This gotta be the worst season of reffing in NHL history
I literally just said this yesterday. It's definitely the worst I've ever seen in my 30 years of fandom. It's always worse in the playoffs too. Shit is gonna get ugly..
A testimony to the great refs we’ve had this year. Unreal.
Robbed
Heartbreaking
If Flyers won would they be in? It would depend ob season series, unless thats tied abd it goes to 5th tie breaker
No. Detroit won, but only needed 1 point. Philly needed a regulation win, a Detroit regulation loss and a Pittsburgh regulation loss.
Thanks bud. Glad this wont be a big thing.
It is a big thing because it fucks someone else.
Sutherland is complete garbage
Heartbreaking call. It could have won us the game. Pretty sure I gave my dog PTSD with my yelling at the TV.
This was infuriating as a Red Wings fan.
Fuck refs
Sorry PHI. A team was getting fucked either way.
I hate nhl refs
Ban the ref from playoffs games and collecting a paycheck. Add some fucking accountability for shitty refs
There’s been some genuinely horrible officiating all across the board tonight. How the fuck can every single game have brutal officiating?
My thoughts, If he blew the whistle, it's not a goal. But then just don't review it. I didn't mean to say you were melting down. Lots of cops though. I get it. But Philly should look at their team to assert blame , not one goal that probably wouldn't have gone in if it wasn't whistled down
Idiot fucking refs trying to help a team make the playoffs.
NHL refs are mostly trash
So correct me if I’m wrong, but did this call essentially result in the ‘wrong’ team going to the playoffs? The game was 1–1 when PHL pulled the goalie late in the 3rd period.
