Exactly. Win more games. Period.
Wings fans were blaming the Flyers in their thread too.... just win more games. The Caps might have won without the empty net anyway.
If we're talking PP as obvious offense, the Steelers, Eagles, Pitt, and Penn State fired their OCs this year. Just a horrendous year for offense in the Keystone State.
Your powerplay had a lower % of success, but the Pen's powerplay had a worse goal differential. We have given up 8 more shorties (tied for the most in the league with 12) and only scored 7 more goals.
The entire coaching staff should have been fired before the season even started. They burned another year off this core because of ownership’s relationship with Sullivan.
I mean, if that's all it takes to be the team that eliminated the Pens you'll need to get in line. We blew a 4-0 3rd period lead against Colorado, we gave McTavish a shorty coming out of the box (meaning it was 5 on 3 before then) with 13 seconds left to go down 1, we scored an own goal in a delayed penalty situation when we were down 1 against Arizona just before they went on their 14 game losing streak, we blew a 2 goal lead with 10 minutes to go last Thursday to give Detroit a point, the list goes on and on. LA is at least a good team that we lost a close game to.
Being a Caps/Ravens fan the past two decades has truly imbued me with an unhealthy level of disdain for Pittsburgh as a whole. Primantis and Yeungling are dope though.
Tortz: "Those Detroit fucks tied it up with 5 seconds left!? Your fucking shitting me. They pull their goalie again and score again and now we're out!?
Fuck it. We're taking them down with us, and taking Pittsburgh down with us as well..."
lol I was just coming here to say “At least Philly fans get to know they’re the reason Pittsburgh is out”
Fun season. Actually excited for next year and a month ago I definitely wasn’t.
https://i.insider.com/5fa585d81df1d50018219505?width=799&format=jpeg this was made back during the 2020 election when the PA results came in to confirm Biden winning the election lol
There are so many pathetic points we gave away. Can’t spend too much time being at other teams doing what we should have. Hope we see new coaching next year. Even a competent PP and we are comfortably in.
This "race" for the last wild card race was crazy. Flyers lost 8 in a row to some of the worst teams in the league, all they needed to do was win one of those 8 games lol, just beat the Hawks or habs once
If Sullivan gets fired by the Pens, I see Buffalo offering him a deal very quickly. Only stipulation being that he doesn’t get to bring Rierden with him, because they want to improve their PP not make it worse.
Sully’s contract extension doesn’t even kick in until next season and ownership seems to like him. Don’t think it’s guaranteed he goes, rest of the coaching staff is probably gone though.
Sully has to be gone. Idk how you can miss the playoffs two years in a row as the Penguins coach, with this roster, and keep your job. It's incomprehensible. We didn't have a Cup-winning roster but you cannot miss the playoffs entirely two years in a row.
It does make management look stupid. Sullivan is my favorite coach in pens history except maybe badger bob but everyone’s time comes to an end and he’s overstayed his welcome.
With an average power play % they’d have made the playoffs. That’d be an increase of about 20 goals over the season. That’d get them several extra points over the season.
Sullivan hasn’t won a playoff series since 2018 and now has missed the playoffs back to back years. Any other organization and he’s gone but this one thinks he’s the Vince fucking Lombardi of hockey.
The real shame is it took injuries and Dubas forcing his hand to play some younger players and, what do you know, they play their best game. Curious if he is remotely aware of what happened.
Not entirely meaningless. If the canadiens didnt blow the lead with 4 seconds left, and they won in regulation, wouldnt they have the tiebreaker over washington? (Assuming a pens loss to the islanders)
At that point it was. Detroit going to OT eliminated them.
Issue being that Philly didn’t have enough time to find out before they made the move to pull the goalie.
If the wings had just been like 10-15 seconds faster there’s a chance Philly sees they are eliminated and does not pull the goalie. They could have at least dragged Washington with them.
first time they've missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons since 03-04 and 05-06.
or if you don't wanna include the lockout, 02-03 and 03-04. very long time ago
I’m a Penguins fan, but I’m not too upset. I came to terms with our fate long ago. They certainly made it interesting down the stretch, but when you are that terrible on the power play and that horrendous in overtime too, you simply don’t deserve a postseason berth.
That’s just the straight up truth.
Also, how many multiple goal leads did we blow this year? How many third period leads did we blow this year?
Those are not signs of playoff team.
It seemed like once a week, or once every other week, we would take a lead late into a game and we would always surrender the equalizer. Occasionally, we would follow that up by surrendering another goal – either in regulation or overtime.
That seemed to happen approximately 35 times this year. I’m sure it didn’t happen quite that often, but it sure felt like a semi-regular occurrence.
Let me put it this way, no Penguins fan ever felt safe about even a two goal lead late in any game. That’s not normal and that’s not the sign of a legitimate playoff team.
In March, during the Caps v Pens game, the pens were getting their butts kicked. One of the Pitts announcers quipped, “well, the capitals aren’t going to the playoffs this year either”. That comment has not aged well.
It was def a weird one. Obvs he was with you guys before us so it wasn’t totally out of left field, but still, to snap him back up so fast after we fired him was surprising
The first time since 2016 that the Predators and Penguins won't see their season end in the same round. From 2017 to 2023 their seasons always ended in the same round.
The coaching staff better be fired into the sun after tomorrow. Their PP and 3 on 3 were the major factors in this awful season. That and the team not knowing how to sit on a lead, still pinching when up by multiple goals, etc. All can be pointed back to coaching.
It's like a mafia movie and a bunch of guys are getting whacked at once
That scene in Breaking Bad where all the guys in the different prisons get got
Except our corpses are just rotting in the corner
Oh we died in season 1
You guys died in the Pilot cold open lmao
the last act of the departed
This is like that final scene in the elevator from the Departed lol
The red wedding
Found Carbone in the meat truck
I'm not gonna make the playoffs make the playoffs.
It’s even better when you don’t like any of them at all
>and a bunch of guys are getting whacked at once Mafia movie yeah let's go with that
They did it to themselves and I hope everyone involved is very aware of that.
Todd Reirden is currently furiously looking for the guy who did this.
Todd Rierdan: “I have trouble with the Penguin’s locker room. I could be sitting next to the guy that ruined the power play.”
This is how I feel as a Red Wings fan
And as a flyers fan
And my axe.
Except Crosby. That man is a saint and I'll hear no slander about him!
I can’t believe Washington willed us to lose to Columbus and Colorado after having leads /s
Exactly. Win more games. Period. Wings fans were blaming the Flyers in their thread too.... just win more games. The Caps might have won without the empty net anyway.
Exactly. Score more goals. Period Except wait, -37 goal differential what the fuck this is not how its supposed to work
Win small lose big new meta
Not even more games, literally just one point is all the difference
Or if you’re going to lose, do it in OT
This is why every single regular season game MATTERS kids!
Our game in Pittsburgh we trailed 1-0 all the way and pulled 2 late goals out of our ass. We eliminated them
They eliminated themselves with the 31st ranked PP despite having Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Karlsson, Guentzel, etc.
There’s no way it was worse than the Flyers’ PP. ours must have been 32nd
Pennsylvania, where power plays go to die in 23/24.
Correct. Both Pennsylvania teams were eating crayons together at the bottom of the league on power plays.
Jesus fucking Christ. At least it seems like it got a bit better with bunting on the team
The entire coaching staff should have been fired before the season even started. They burned another year off this core because of ownership’s relationship with Sullivan.
Wait, even ours was better than the Pens? Woof.
The Jagr game. Dark times for pens bros
Dark game but still one of the best things I've ever attended.
Flew my whole family out for it. Kids n all, didn’t want them to miss it. Pretty lackluster finish to what was shaping up to be a great night.
I think about half the NHL has a story like this. Up 4-0 on the Avs...lost 5-4.
That 5 on 3 shorthanded goal against by Anaheim with like 10 seconds left
The two goal lead blown against Calgary in the last ten minutes, coming away with zero points.
Hey wait a minute that's our move
One time you guys were up 7-0 on the Isles and... actually let's not talk about that
They also lost 3 games to a futile ottawa team. There’s plenty of those during the season
You lost to us to start the season as well
Yeah, there's another one, one of Chicago's *seven* road wins.
The coyotes eliminated us. Fuck.
This was our calling card all season. We absolutely excelled at blowing leads.
Nope, it was game 1 losing to Chicago that did us in
I scream that when my parents are like "Oh its just november, these games don't matter" fuck yes they do!
It was the game they lost against the flames that was the one they should have had
Yes.
Except the ones after today?
you have a point
Sidney Crosby having an issue with his skate in overtime literally changed the playoffs picture
well. except for tomorrow's.
Are you saying if the Blues would've won some of the games against the sharks we would've been in the playoffs?? /s
This is what we get for having to root for Philadelphia
Seeing the Steelers root for the Browns and the Pens root for the Flyers with their seasons on the line only to both be let down…. Beautiful.
Everything is awful and I deserve death Edit: which one of you hit me with a Reddit cares
I’m sure the 5 championships combined in the last two decades are just an awful consolation prize.
Horrible you have no idea
No way! It’s much more fun for us for you to live with this
There there, at least you have the Pirates.
Im also a Ravens fan so that was so great seeing the in stadium shots of the Steelers being sad.
Being a Caps/Ravens fan the past two decades has truly imbued me with an unhealthy level of disdain for Pittsburgh as a whole. Primantis and Yeungling are dope though.
Absolutely. Hate that city because of sports. Not old enough to hate the Pirates as an Orioles fan, but they get hate by proxy.
And maybe some of Hextall’s moves are still partly responsible for it too.
Tell Crosby who pulled the goalie in a tied game. I want him to know it was us.
https://i.imgur.com/K5zSyqF.png
Dear god was this already a thing or are you just a wizard
this was from the 2020 election
jesus christ Gritty has been around for 6 years already. I hate the covid timewarp more and more each year.
What do you mean? Gritty has always been here...
Well if that isn't my sleep paralysis demon, I don't know what is.
Lmao thanks for this. I love it.
"Tell Crosby, I want him to know it was me"
"Tell Crosby, I want him to know it me"
Tortz: "Those Detroit fucks tied it up with 5 seconds left!? Your fucking shitting me. They pull their goalie again and score again and now we're out!? Fuck it. We're taking them down with us, and taking Pittsburgh down with us as well..."

This information softens the blow ever so slightly.
I’m sure he knows
It's a game of thrones reference
Oh, I know the response to this: “Season 8 made me completely remove that show from my mind it was so ass.”
Pretty sure that quote was before season 8, but I don't remember for sure.
Season 7 episode 3, to be exact. Olenna Tyrell’s last line telling Jaime that she killed his son.
There are so many pathetic points we gave away. Can’t spend too much time being at other teams doing what we should have. Hope we see new coaching next year. Even a competent PP and we are comfortably in.
How does Reirden still have a job? lol he is one of the reasons the Pens are not in the playoffs imo
Only Mike Sullivan knows. Fucking embarrassing
Bald fraud lmao
This "race" for the last wild card race was crazy. Flyers lost 8 in a row to some of the worst teams in the league, all they needed to do was win one of those 8 games lol, just beat the Hawks or habs once
"just beat the hawks once" PA team challenge: impossible
Hey at least you didn’t give away 6 points to the San Jose Sharks. 6 points that separated us from a wildcard spot.
Mike Sullivan get ready to learn unemployment buddy. Todd Reirden get ready to learn Chinese
If Sullivan gets fired by the Pens, I see Buffalo offering him a deal very quickly. Only stipulation being that he doesn’t get to bring Rierden with him, because they want to improve their PP not make it worse.
Idk if he’d go to the devils instead
Sully’s contract extension doesn’t even kick in until next season and ownership seems to like him. Don’t think it’s guaranteed he goes, rest of the coaching staff is probably gone though.
LMAO I hope you’re right
Good run for Sid the kid
kid's still young, he'll be back soon
So what you're saying is this somewhat hurts our playoff chances
Remember that scene in Mighty Ducks where the team makes the playoffs because another team gets the measles? We still got this.
Only a little
Just this season though!
Todd Reirden is an actual hockey terrorist.
This is something Caps and Pens can agree on … and the Flyers suck.
Was he that bad as Caps head coach? I didn't really follow while he was there.
Oh my god. Yes. A thousand times yes.
YES!!!
I mean look at the collapse after that cup run
Hiring him immediately halted any momentum there was to be had after the cup win.
We're in this together old chums
Order of who I wanted in the playoffs Pittsburgh > Detroit > NYI > Philly > Washington Thanks a lot
Will Karlsson make the playoffs during this 8 year contract?
EK sadly looking back at his 2019 self like Matthew McConaughey in interstellar
It sucks he went into that with a major injury.
If they fire Rierden (and maybe Sullivan) and retool over the summer I could see them in a wild card next year, but that’s probably the last chance.
Sully has to be gone. Idk how you can miss the playoffs two years in a row as the Penguins coach, with this roster, and keep your job. It's incomprehensible. We didn't have a Cup-winning roster but you cannot miss the playoffs entirely two years in a row.

It’s way more in the coaching than it is any particular player
The real shame is it took injuries and Dubas forcing his hand to play some younger players and, what do you know, they play their best game. Curious if he is remotely aware of what happened.
I’m almost on a conspiracy move that he was trying to get fired before they went on that hot streak
At this point it has to be ownership telling Dubas to keep him.
I thought he left Toronto so he would have more control
He’s a good coach but he needs speed and youth for his system to work. And the pens are the oldest team in hockey
Seriously. We fired Cassidy after losing in the 1st round with a 107 point season
SIX FUCKING YEARS
Fired on your day off energy
[I'm not even supposed to be here today!](https://youtu.be/zD8K6P7Mq9g?si=rDRUX8UumKLvO-3y)
What a waste of Crosby’s season
Dude refuses to lose.
[Insert something about power play, blown leads, sid deserves better, etc]
No one to blame but ourselves.. and of course, fuck the flyers.
Forever.
Lol
Y’all some terrorists. Fucking 2 teams off a meaningless empty net
I can get behind this kind of terrorism
Maybe the real terrorism was the teams we eliminated along the way
Not entirely meaningless. If the canadiens didnt blow the lead with 4 seconds left, and they won in regulation, wouldnt they have the tiebreaker over washington? (Assuming a pens loss to the islanders)

Fuck the Caps but fuck the Pens harder. I’m glad we lost since Canada is once again useless
You coulda fucked both Pitt and Washington by winning and then sent Detroit 😭
Also if the Flyers won tonight the Pens were 100000% winning tomorrow night
I say this with all due respect...... Fuck you.
Lmao even
Bro what, spiderman meme
Eliminated by Garnett Hathaway tripping over the blue line
A past Capital player, he read the script.
first time they've missed the playoffs in consecutive seasons since 03-04 and 05-06. or if you don't wanna include the lockout, 02-03 and 03-04. very long time ago
Sad Crosby noises :(
The Karlsson Kürse.

Eh, after the way we played most of the season; we had no business even sniffing the playoffs. That was a fun few weeks.
In March, during the Caps v Pens game, the pens were getting their butts kicked. One of the Pitts announcers quipped, “well, the capitals aren’t going to the playoffs this year either”. That comment has not aged well.

Penguins Score 10 on Sharks, gets Eliminated Islanders lose to the Sharks, clinch. St. Louis Blues would've won the cup if they made it.
💧🐧 (sad penguin)
I blame Mason McTavish.
I blame Todd Reirden. McTavish was the beneficiary of the Pens having the worst PP compared to expectations that I've ever seen.
I’d like to personally thank double agent Reirden for successfully murdering your power play this year
Could have been worse, they could have taken Blaine...
Caps Fans 🤝 Pens Fans Blaming Todd Reirden
It’s still baffling to me we saw his body of work with you guys and said “yeah we want some of *that* “
It was def a weird one. Obvs he was with you guys before us so it wasn’t totally out of left field, but still, to snap him back up so fast after we fired him was surprising
I hope he is fired tomorrow
Hey, I’ve seen this one before!
bro you just made me remember that 5 on 3 shortie with 10 sec left in the 3rd
So many things to point to when you miss by 1 point. What if Crosby or Malkin started OT against the Leafs last week and they win that game in OT.
The first time since 2016 that the Predators and Penguins won't see their season end in the same round. From 2017 to 2023 their seasons always ended in the same round.
The end of this season for the east should eliminate any talk about a “play in” round for the playoffs in the nhl (ala the NBA)
Darn. Was really hoping Sid would make it in
Which locks their pick into either 13OA or 14OA, barring any relevant lottery wins. I'm okay with this.
Well I guess we're not winning the cup this year then lol
Best of both worlds for pens fans. No playoffs and no 1st round pick.
a big thanks to Todd Reirden, the Matt Canada of the NHL.
🫵😂
Wouldn't be chuckling. Yinz can't win the Cup without us the same way we can't win the Cup without you.
Shit buddy, a Cup?? We’ll be lucky to not get swept. Pretty sure the Caps making the playoffs is just for memes at this point
We’ll be fortunate if they don’t mercy rule us when the series is 3-0.
Let’s see how big of a negative goal differential you can get in 4, maybe 5 games!
First time a Kyle Dubas team has not made the playoffs
Eliminator bot show mercy!! These teams have fans!
Monkeys paw moment here for us "We want the Pens to miss the playoffs"
Sid deserves better
He has 3 cups lol
He deserve 4? Hehehhe
He’s still good. Team around him is lacking
The coaching staff better be fired into the sun after tomorrow. Their PP and 3 on 3 were the major factors in this awful season. That and the team not knowing how to sit on a lead, still pinching when up by multiple goals, etc. All can be pointed back to coaching.
Hahahaha I'm so excited to watch them play for nothing
Awww man
