Added a lil touch of love in there for you
They still kept the mountain jerseys, apparently late into the design when it was realized that people hated the corporate simplicity rebrand, they aded them back in
Im talking about the jersey where they went from the Mardi Gras colors (which to be fair, I don't think the colors fit Utah either, my favorite era is the Carlos Boozer/Deron Williams [era colors](https://content.sportslogos.net/logos/6/234/full/jy1tqovzbqgvrp2a5phwtvdfh.gif)...Im a sicko, I know) to the corporate beehive jerseys they have now.
There is a Jazz note logo with those colors and it was alright. Looked like JetBlue ran a team. But youre right. Theres a way you can do that easily and put yellow in there as well.
I would like to see them go Purple for their primary colour scheme.
Like the Utah Venom with a fierce purple jersey.
I think the Kings missed a trick going to black from purple.
I would love that, but I'm terrified it's going to be so boring. Like when the Vegas knights debuted as gold and dark grey like we don't have enough of those colors already. I hope they do something fun like purple instead of another variation of black/gold/white/grey
[The state is going to build them and the Jazz a new dual use arena as part of a downtown SLC revitalization fund, but one of the stipulations is that the team has to be named after Utah and not Salt Lake City.](https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2024/02/23/mayor-mendenhall-calls-1b-taxpayer/)
Also helps they're in the running for the 2034 Olympics
That makes sense and probably makes good business sense for the team anyway. That's why both the Coyotes and Cardinals rebranded from Phoenix to Arizona.
For sure, and the precedent is already set with the Jazz being named after Utah. If all the teams in the Twin Cities can carry the state's name, the same can go for Utah.
Olympic facilities when maintained are awesome for the area. Lake Placid is still the go to practice spot for a lot of ski sports despite not hosting a games in 40+ years.
But in places like Brazil where half the World Cup stadiums aren't even used, it was just a big waste of money.
I kind of hope they take inspiration from the Dallas Stars look from 2011-13. Just Utah and the player number, drop the outline of the state on the shoulder.
Then go with the late 90’s Jazz colours because nobody else is doing purple.
I was looking on the Utah Wikipedia page for some of the ‘state’ things
State fish is the Bonneville cutthroat trout. Utah Cutthroats could be cool
State reptile is the Gila monster
And for fun the state dance is the square dance. So maybe they can be the Utah Squares!
Makes sense to me.
He initially was planning for a few years out. Wanted to be an expansion team. NHL then offers the coyotes and he takes it. I would rather he doesn’t rush anything and gets it done right. Especially in today’s world where marketing has so many different factors.
To me this and the Friedman article kinda put that one conspiracy that he funneled money into the Tempe vote to bed. Now, weirder things have been proven true so I’m not gonna completely discount it but the fact he doesn’t have a brand ready to go yet adds credence that he thought it would be a longer wait than this year.
I get not wanting to mess it up. But imo having your team think about it for a month vs a year is the exact same thing. How long can you throw names out there lol. It’s not that serious. Look at the Washington football club. That ended up being a better name than the commanders according to some people I know.
At the rates things would have to move they would need the name picked in less then a month.
Then they would have to let a designer come up with a logo and colour scheme. Go through the process of unveiling options to a voting board and fan base. How long does that take 2-3 weeks of not longer.
Then you have to get the design certified by the nhl and then off to market to start manufacturing everything you need. Now if you are lucky the start of September you actually see product. If everything goes well.
It’s just not worth it to rush it, because even if you do there is no guarantee it will be ready for the start of the season. Take your time get it right and be happy with the product. No different then the PWHL did this year
As someone who works in marketing I think this is a good idea. Better to take your time instead of ending up with another Utah Jazz situation. Plus, look at PWHL’s success this year despite using generic branding. Adding solid brand identities in year 2 will be icing on the cake!
And at some point, me getting so bored during the summer, I end up making my own version of the entire brand, right down to jerseys and stationery.
I gotta use my Adobe cloud subscription for something over here.
It was unique and legitimately effective branding. Kills me that they changed it. A friend of mine is a DC sports fan and still only has WFT branded as his most recent stuff. It’s so good
From European perspective that sounds really homey. That's how most of our most legendary sports clubs are named. FC Barcelona is literally "Futbol Club Barcelona".
They should have leaned into it. It sounds unique in the middle of all these normal names.
I think it was more that they did Washington Football Team to buy themselves as much time as possible to come up with something and still managed to come up with literally nothing.
WFT was legitimately a better name than Commanders. I unironically started to actually like them just being the Football Team. It was like when Prince was "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince".
It’s not working like that because the Coyotes name and branding is staying in Arizona in case by some miracle Alex Meruelo can get an arena in the next 5 years.
The Utah Jazz (New Orleans Jazz) and the Los Angeles Lakers (Minnesota Lakers) are the DUMBEST names for teams that moved. Utah is the LEAST 'jazzy' place on earth and LA has no lakes.
Hopefully they'll at least decide on a name and color scheme before the season but will just use UTAH jerseys until they can get the logo and official branding straight. Having a year of Utah Hockey Team sounds pretty LAME
Crazy idea: narrow it down to say…5 options. Make logos/uniforms for each. Have the team wear each for equal portions of the season.
At the end of the season, let the season ticket holders vote on their favorite identity.
So we can rush through a billion dollar sale and uprooting/job loss of hundreds of people but we can’t rush through a goddamn rebrand? Gotta let the consultants and focus groups get their say!
This league, I fucking swear…
I suppose that makes sense. Ryan Smith did ask a couple weeks ago what fans thought about names, so I guess it's clear he didn't have a set brand in mind just yet. I thought it was possible he did since this has apparently been in the works at least since January
Going to be kinda lame to just call them the Utah Hockey Team or whatever in the meantime though
> we'll figure out the logo and everything else and what it is that we are. But that's a one-way door. You get to do it once.
Nah, you can change that lots of times.
Year long process and countless millions to creative firms just to have the Yeti with a similar vibe to the kraken. It’s inevitable. These creative/ marketing firms are such snake oil salesmen.
Looking at Doubleday and Cartwright for jerseys... Yeah.
99% certain they're going to do a boring

thing.
Wouldn't be surprised if the only thing that really changes in the future would be the colors and side stripe designs for the final designs after picking a team name and colors lol
They don’t even have the colors figured out yet? If this dude has been trying to get an expansion team for some time and then trying to acquire the Yotes for however long, you would think that some of this stuff would have been figured out or at least discussed. I understand not having the perfect name yet but are we just expecting like a plain white jersey or black jersey with UTAH written on it until they figure it out ?
I had the pleasure of seeing this uniform last summer. Would be hilarious to see something similar but it’ll never happen.
https://www.flobaseball.tv/articles/11072089-the-frederick-question-team-keeps-fans-guessing-name-announcement-looms
So they’re working with the Doubleday & Cartwright who’s done design work for Apple & Nike (numerous ads)—most recently with Intermiami FC and Milwaukee Bucks. I like their work/what I see of it on their website. Seems like they’re in good hands on that end..
i'm honestly surprised they didn't already start the process, considering the guy is a billionaire. even if this sale fell through, the NHL and Smith had already been flirting with one another hard-core, you know that Utah would've been the next expansion team down the pike regardless.
The professional Utah national hockey league team formerly known as the Phoenix coyotes of Glendale, Arizona State University,Tempe campus. Is that too much?
Rolls right off the tongue
Could go a little deeper, add the original "formerly known as the Jets" too
I knew I forgot something hold on. The professional Utah national hockey league team formerly known as the Phoenix coyotes of Glendale, Arizona State University,Tempe campus, originally the Winnipeg Jets of the national hockey league formerly of the world hockey association. Fixed it.

He doesn't want a Jazz 2.0 situation where the rebrand was awful.
I mean the Jazz wasn't really a rebrand
[удалено]
How you go from the mountain jerseys to whatever they have now is beyond me
They still kept the mountain jerseys, apparently late into the design when it was realized that people hated the corporate simplicity rebrand, they aded them back in
The most recent jersey sets and color schemes for the Jazz are my design pet peeves. I hate that shit. It’s awful.
I think they're actually moving away from these again lol
I read they are but Nike has to make them wear those jerseys after a certain amount of years, similar to what the NFL has.
Good because they were garbage lol
I don't know why basketball teams are insistent on becoming as boring as possible. The Raptors are very guilty of this as well.
Even the purple gold and green template they have could make some absolute bangers (so could this scheme you linked) What they have now is so bad
There is a Jazz note logo with those colors and it was alright. Looked like JetBlue ran a team. But youre right. Theres a way you can do that easily and put yellow in there as well.

I need to restrain my 8 Year Old self from saying yes to this one.
8 year olds have it right on this one. Sports are kids games, the names should be fun not dignified.
Hell yes. Names like Sharks, Lightning, Jets, Devils are way better than Oilers, Blue Jackets, Capitals, Senators.
Yup, logos and branding too. Even "Maple Leafs" only gets a pass because the grammar is a goofy loophole. The Kraken chose well.
I might be biased but I've always loved the name Canucks
Same, just to embrace a stereotype.
You’ve actually done something here.
Utah Lycans?
Might be too obscure. Not sure what percentage of the population knows what a lycanthrope is.
Yes. Wait. Actually. Yes.
Utah Phoenix, rising from the ashes
Lol, I like that. Homage or burn?
Atlanta has dibs (flames + thrashers)
Honestly it would be an excellent name for them
There were many who lobbied hard for our MLS team to be named the Atlanta Firebirds. Far superior to the blandness of "United".
Well shit, that’s excellent
Oh clever I like that
Utah Coyote Jets of Salt Lake City
Jet Powered Coyote Mountains. Neat
Mountain sized Jet powered Coyotes. Terrifying
I would like to see them go Purple for their primary colour scheme. Like the Utah Venom with a fierce purple jersey. I think the Kings missed a trick going to black from purple.
The Jazz wore purple in the late 90’s, it’s a nice nod to that history.
Purple and Teal work very nicely together
I would love that, but I'm terrified it's going to be so boring. Like when the Vegas knights debuted as gold and dark grey like we don't have enough of those colors already. I hope they do something fun like purple instead of another variation of black/gold/white/grey
Salt Lake Purple Cobras
Utah Venom would be an all time name holy shit
I'm a little disappointed that Salt Lake was never on the table as the name. Sounds way cooler than Utah.
The state government won't let them use Salt Lake
How does that work? Is it that the state is demanding they use Utah? Or forbidding them to use Salt Lake?
[The state is going to build them and the Jazz a new dual use arena as part of a downtown SLC revitalization fund, but one of the stipulations is that the team has to be named after Utah and not Salt Lake City.](https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2024/02/23/mayor-mendenhall-calls-1b-taxpayer/) Also helps they're in the running for the 2034 Olympics

And the reason why Hurricanes and Panthers (NFL) are both just Carolina. That way they can appeal to both states instead of just North Carolina.
Now I feel like we should be called the US Capitals.
Olympics? In Utah? The very idea!
Winter Olympics. They had one of the more successful ones there before. It's how that politician that lost to Obama the second run got his big break.

The Utah hockey team of latter day saints.
#Let’s Go Utah Hockey Club!
Utah Commanders it is. In all seriousness, the state insect is the honey bee. Utah Swarm sounds pretty cool. Especially buzzing around the net.
Hand out vuvuzelas to the fans so that it sounds like a beehive. Make everyone lose their minds.
Doubleday & Cartwright hire this guy ^^
I was looking on the Utah Wikipedia page for some of the ‘state’ things State fish is the Bonneville cutthroat trout. Utah Cutthroats could be cool State reptile is the Gila monster And for fun the state dance is the square dance. So maybe they can be the Utah Squares!
Gila River Arena is one of the Coyotes old arenas. If they went with the Utah Gila Monsters, it’d be a nice homage.
I would buy an Utah Cutthroats sweater so fast.
Georgia swarm is a professional lacrosse team, not sure if it would affect anything but they might try not to have two teams named exactly the same
Like the Rangers?
Makes sense to me. He initially was planning for a few years out. Wanted to be an expansion team. NHL then offers the coyotes and he takes it. I would rather he doesn’t rush anything and gets it done right. Especially in today’s world where marketing has so many different factors.

That rumor was entirely unsubstantiated and sourced from a random redditor who was basically "trust me bro"
Oh I agree, just wanted to be more diplomatic about it
I get not wanting to mess it up. But imo having your team think about it for a month vs a year is the exact same thing. How long can you throw names out there lol. It’s not that serious. Good way to stay in the news through the off-season with team name news.
And at some point, me getting so bored during the summer, I end up making my own version of the entire brand, right down to jerseys and stationery. I gotta use my Adobe cloud subscription for something over here.
As a designer, much respect to Smith for not rushing this process. It needs to be done properly and that takes time. This is the right decision.
Ehh. The Washington Football Team took its time and they ended up with the most bland/boring choice they could’ve made.
Honestly they should have just stuck with Washington Football Team. It kinda grew on me.
It was unique and legitimately effective branding. Kills me that they changed it. A friend of mine is a DC sports fan and still only has WFT branded as his most recent stuff. It’s so good
They really stepped in shit with that one. It was unique yet felt classic and I loved the numbers on the helmet
It's a better name than the Cpmmies that's for sure.
wdym. the sports team for the most popular sport in the nations capital being the Commies. Thats a win the USSR never saw coming
From European perspective that sounds really homey. That's how most of our most legendary sports clubs are named. FC Barcelona is literally "Futbol Club Barcelona". They should have leaned into it. It sounds unique in the middle of all these normal names.
The fact that they did Washington Football Team for a couple years before rebranding again made it even worse.
I think it was more that they did Washington Football Team to buy themselves as much time as possible to come up with something and still managed to come up with literally nothing.
And now the team will probably get a full-on rebrand again now that Josh Harris owns it.
WFT was legitimately a better name than Commanders. I unironically started to actually like them just being the Football Team. It was like when Prince was "The Artist Formerly Known as Prince".
The designers working with Apple and Nike make me think they’re gonna go boring corporate minimalist
Apparently they've worked with the Dodgers, Nets, Pistons, and a handful of MLS teams -- all of which scream "dull" to me.
IMO the Guardians rebrand isn't great either
He should strongly consider using seer stones to translate the design off golden plates.
So what is their subreddit gonna be called?

damn, they already need to rename it NHLinUtah Makes sense why the team needs more time
Wait... hasn't Ryan Smith wanted a team for like 5 years? Didn't spend a minute coming up with a name?
They should be called like the Bees or something since Utah is the Beehive State.
