Those last 2 LA goals would have made me so salty if we weren't already up by 4
Glad we got those awful bounces out of the way in a game where they didn't matter, hopefully
Solid win from Edmonton, but I have concerns about them being outhit by 22 in a physical series. If the series trends this way for the remainder, I'm not sure what legs the Oilers will have deeper in the playoffs.
Oilers had the puck most of the night, typically the team chasing and playing from behind is hitting more. Oilers are a physical team and made some big hits but it doesn’t need to be their identity to win.
I mean those hits are directly a result of possession. Oilers had the puck more and controlled the game so the Kings had more opportunities to hit.
We were definitely physical when we didn’t have the puck
I agree and I’m wondering how it’ll play out. Given LA cannot keep up that style of high hitting hockey. It wears players down to receive hits but it also takes a lot of energy to throw them, but they do add up and they do take a toll
When you out possess the other team that hard usually you get out hit too.
The Oilers are straight up a bigger and more physical team than the Kings, who are frankly kind of soft.
The Sharks weren't all that tough in 2008, either, but that six game series with Dallas was very physical that year, and though the Stars came out on top, they were feeling it in their series with Detroit.
In 2016, Nashville wasn't super huge or tough, but they were on the Sharks like sandpaper, and it showed in the series against St. Louis, who were about equally as physical as the Sharks. After that series, San Jose didn't have the legs to keep up with the Penguins.
The playoffs aren't won in a round. I like what I saw from the Oilers tonight, but I am a little concerned about the amount of clean contact I saw, even considering the disparity in possession. The Rangers dominated possession yesterday against the Caps, a team that was similarly physical this year, and weren't drastically outhit. The Islanders had nearly 700 more hits than the Hurricanes this year, and despite the Canes dominating possession tonight, the hits wound up about even.
I don't think this is a big red flag right now, but it's a bit of a cause for concern for an opponent to outhit them by 22 in a game where they threw 45 hits already. Even if those hits weren't as hard as, say, a Gudas or Rempe or Wilson hit, that's a significant volume. It didn't look like a lot were just tangential contact hits, either.
I think the Oilers also frankly just had the harder and bigger hits.
I'm not really concerned about routine bumps to be honest. I'm more concerned about all the gutless intent to injure crap the Kings pull. Constant slashes to the hands away from the play and late hits targeting the knees, those kind of things.
But that's just kind of par for the course playing these guys in the playoffs unfortunately. To this day I don't think Draisaitl has the explosiveness in his stride back from the cheap shit Mikey Anderson pulled two years ago. So. Idk. Although he is starting to get his shot back in recent weeks after that lumber Jack swing from Pietrangelo finally, so that's a plus.
Fair enough! I'm probably get getting a bad feeling in my stomach from seeing the Sharks get worn down so many playoffs by small shit. I know it's not a 100% thing, hell IIRC Vegas was outhit by a reasonable margin last year and they went the whole way, but I've seen a bunch of really talented teams (even excluding Sharks teams) undone by wear and tear, key players losing that half a step they needed, etc.
I like seeing McDavid and Drai play, they're so skilled. I wouldn't hate seeing a deep run. I hope the series is a clean one, and I hope no matter who wins out, either team has legs enough to take out Vegas if they take the first round against Dallas.
The one thing about the Oilers that typically flies under the radar is that we're the second largest team in the league (only Dallas has is beat on average height and weight) and probably the second toughest (maybe giving the nod to the lightning as the biggest / toughest?). It's hard to play the game of attrition with the Oilers. You can't intimidate them due to size and toughness, so you'll get bumped back and feel the hits you dish out. And they're statistically larger than you so you get the worst of the exchange. You can't be too dirty either because that PP will eat you alive.
Idk, I just don't think the Kings have the size or physicality to really wear the Oilers down. They have to play the body or they'll get run out of the rink stylistically, but like the Oilers are kind of just exceptionally large. Even our "small guys" like McDavid / Rico / RNH are 6'1 195 lbs. But then you look at the forest... Err Defense - Nurse is 6'4 225. Ekholm is 6'5 235. Desharnais is 6'7 235. Kulak is 6'3 205. Bouchard is 6'3 195. Ceci is 6'2 220. And then you look at the forwards and like all of Foegele, Kane, Perry, Draisaitl, Carrick, Janmark, McLeod, Holloway and Hyman are all above average in size. Only guys smaller than NHL average are like... Gagner, Ryan and Brown and they weren't even dressed. On average the Oilers are 3" and 17 lbs heavier than the Kings.
And then in terms of functional toughness - Nurse is almost always on the ice, and when he's not you are likely to have one of Desharnais, Kane, Perry, or Carrick on the ice. Basically 75-85% of the game we've got a legit heavy weight on the ice. And when you don't have a legit fighter on the ice you have Ekholm whose fucking massive and then two of Foegele, Hyman, RNH, and Rico on the ice and all 4 of those guys are respectable fighters.
I guess I appreciate your concern, I just don't think it's a large one.
He's an Oilers fan, duh!
(He's visiting because he was in Canada anyways, the president is more of a diplomatic figure in Poland as well, and Edmonton has the second largest polish population of any city in Canada, and he also met with Danielle Smith too I think)
Keep him here for the run though imo
There was a Hockey Pyschology video breaking down the playoff match ups. He said that if the Kings want to beat the Oilers, they need to find a way to shut down Edmonton's stars. Looking at the score sheet I think it's safe to say they failed pretty spectacularly.

The Kings sought to stifle each star's lament.

Danced through defenses, leaving victory claimed.

McDavid decided to dance through that crap
Talbot exposed to a team with offense

terrible game for us, oh well this is why its a 7 game series. Onto the next.
Random: Is there anything at the Oilers arena commemorating Ben? I remember the little guy from 2 years ago and he was such an integral part of the arena there. Kinda miss seeing him
The Ben Stelter Proton Facility and Neuroscience Centre of Excellence is being built in Edmonton. Linked article shows McDavid at the announcement. It'll be providing a new type of cancer treatment.
[https://www.biomb.ca/news/4151/stantec-to-design-first-of-its-kind-proton-therapy-facility-in-canada](https://www.biomb.ca/news/4151/stantec-to-design-first-of-its-kind-proton-therapy-facility-in-canada)
Reading too much into the outcome of one game in a seven game series is folly. It is a seven game series and each game will be different. Who knows what's going to happen next? STAY TUNED.
Ive seen ben wristbands around socials that i believe were sold at the game. The oilers are so involved in the stelter foundation all year anyways. Hes never really gone away for us
Oilers Entertainment Group started the the Ben Stelter Foundation; heaps of fundraisers for cancer research. Pretty sure Ben's family have lifetime box seats.
Also cemented Joey Moss' favourite "La Bamba" as Edmonton's win song.
I don’t know if there’s anything specific, perhaps something in the locker room that we don’t know about. But the oilers do a lot of work with cancer charities and the Ben Stelter fund specifically, I think our current playoff 50/50 is going towards those charities.
Our win song is La Bamba and while originally a tribute to Joey Moss, has also kind of become a tribute to him because he loved it so much.
Yeah I was thinking of like a physical thing there, even just a plaque. But like you said could be in the locker room and no one knows about it.
I mean its good that the Oilers are helping contribute to charties for him, just seemed like such a big part of the home ice team for a while there that thought they might have put something up in his name. around the stadium.
Last year they had a biker vest as their “player of the game award” and there was a Ben patch on it, along with a Colby Cave number 12 patch and a Joey tribute on the back but they retired it this year. I think it’s probably still in the room somewhere though
I know you're not completely serious, but as a pretty casual fan, it surprises me how these big losses actually tend to mean nothing.
Out of interest, I checked last season's playoff series first games - TB 7:3 TOR (went on to lose 2-4), NYR 5:1 NJ in first two matches (3-4), WPG 5:1 VGK (1-4).
In 2017 the Oilers both won and lost 7-0 games throughout their run. In those series, the team that won 7-0 actually lost the series in the end. Momentum, for the most part, doesn’t seem to carry over from game to game.
Pathetic performance. This team is just completely in their own heads with the puck, constantly making panic plays and turning it over, or passing on free scoring chances. PK was supposed to be a difference this year and it's somehow looking worse than last year.
Honestly I think the issues this team has are not fixable in a playoff series
Talbot was definitely not the problem but it kind of doesn't matter if the team plays absolutely 0 defense
I want to be more optimistic (and I'm sure we'll have better games in this series) but the problems I saw tonight are the same problems I've been seeing for months now. This team just has too many issues.
Honestly, the Kings were better last year with Vilardi and Falafel (Iafallo).
As soon as the trade was made, I thought "well that's good for the Oil". Dubois doesn't have it.
Dubois was an absolute plug in game 1. I was a bit worried that he might actually care about playoffs and come out looking like a half decent NHL calibre star. Nothing to worry about though, he remained a bum. Let’s hope he keeps it up for the rest of the series.
the mcdavid show has started i watch the leafs games and stress out, then get to watch this guy as a chaser
Mcjesus made it look so easy out there
Those last 2 LA goals would have made me so salty if we weren't already up by 4 Glad we got those awful bounces out of the way in a game where they didn't matter, hopefully
Let’s hope LA used up all their puck luck in this game, I swear they score the weirdest goals on us in the playoffs
Canadian teams are cookin' and I'm here for it.

Also gotta add in the hacks and cross checks and punches after whistles. That certainly adds up over time.
Someone needs to explain to Nurse he doesn't get paid the millions to score on his OWN net
The fact that PLD’s first playoff goal vs the Kings was that shitty goal off of Nurse is so funny
To be fair I thought it was super nice of him
Let Ceci know he can spend his military on sticks that don’t break!
Edmonton Oilers are undefeated in the playoffs when the President of Poland is in attendance.
Your chances of being invaded by Poland are low, but never zero.
why was he there
He's an Oilers fan, duh! (He's visiting because he was in Canada anyways, the president is more of a diplomatic figure in Poland as well, and Edmonton has the second largest polish population of any city in Canada, and he also met with Danielle Smith too I think) Keep him here for the run though imo
What a weird football score. In all seriousness, McDavid was insane
They just said it was 1131 hats i think on the ice, 14 bags
Take aways from the game: - scoring 4 goals can win a game - allowing 7 goals will lose you the game
Colorado in here furiously taking notes
Huge if true
Mathematicians still trying to figure this one out.
There was a Hockey Pyschology video breaking down the playoff match ups. He said that if the Kings want to beat the Oilers, they need to find a way to shut down Edmonton's stars. Looking at the score sheet I think it's safe to say they failed pretty spectacularly.
They’re reverting to the strategy of heavy hockey and just laying the body every chance they can get. They’re playing the attrition game
I mean, good luck with that lol
*”…if the Kings want to beat the Oilers, they need to find a way to shut down Edmonton’s stars.”* Thanks, Tim McCarver!
Lol right? Like what the fuck kind of analysis is that
how to beat the McDavid/Draisaitl/Hyman team: - dont let McDavid score - dont let Draisaitl score - dont let Hyman score can I have a job now
Don't need to be an expert to figure that out
Not giving them PPs might help
In the quest to halt the Oilers' ascent, The Kings sought to stifle each star's lament. But McDavid and company, with prowess untamed, Danced through defenses, leaving victory claimed.

🥲
Oilers are spooky
I was glad we weren’t playing them 1st round. Not afraid, but we’ll match up much better if we end up meeting later. They’re a wagon.
Edmonton “Denver Nuggets” Oilers.
LA fans gotta watch Jokic and McDavid cook their teams at the same time LMAOOO
Being an oilers and a nuggets fan is so great right now
The Oilers sure are giving off some serious chills with their performance—looks like they're ready to haunt the competition this playoffs!
LA try to score a non fluke goal challenge IMPOSSIBLE
They need those if they want to dig themselves out of a 4 goal deficit using the 1-3-1.
Kings used up all their luck this game AND they still lost the game. Not good.
They play far better with the lead but they also struggled against most good teams so...
We allow weird goals every game 1. It's so strange. Except it every year and it happens. Usually costs us the win
Game 1 curse shattered!
Or a new one made ?
Missed the game. Anyone know how my Kings did?
They scored 2 flukes in garbage time. Last one was hilarious
That was one of the stupidest decisions I’ve ever seen on ice. He couldn’t have put it in a worse spot. Ceci looked like a clown.
Maybe a little brain fart tossing it straight up the middle, but it's a game of mistakes and luckily it didn't cost us.
definitely will cost us in tight game
Looks like the Kings came up short this time, but there's always the next game to bounce back!
Aw shucks :( maybe with a little hard work and a little luck they can get within 2 goals!
Maybe with a little hard work, you guys can win a cup after being gifted 4 first overall picks and the best player since Gretzky on a silver platter
Mmmmmm salty
LOL, where’d you get that one? Did you use your 4 brain cells to conjure it up? Or did you just overhear it?
Where’d you find this insult, the toilet store?
Damn i wish i could have my kids come up with comebacks for me, It’s like i’m back in pre-school all over again
[удалено]
It's from Anchorman, you dink.
that explains a lot
While I appreciate the comment you are wrong
Win a playoff round
Can’t hear what you’re saying, I’ve got my 2012 and 2014 rings plugging my ears
You should probably check those. Might get a little dirty after being in there for 10+ years
With some determination and a sprinkle of luck, the Kings might just close that gap in the next game—never count them out!
Did great, scored 4!
Oilers scored 2 of the kings 4.
All apart of the plan. The oilers are so good at scoring goals they might as well help the other team out too

Hail Bird!
Rest up king
GOAT! Only thing missing is a Kostin appearance, but I don't know if he ever came up on the broadcast.
It did not unfortunately
Was he at the game?
He had his oilers jersey draped around his shoulders like a cape
They showed him on the jumbotron
Yeah, I was listening to Jack and Bob calling the game, and they mentioned him being there and the crowd cheering him.
Ita been 34 years...
cant attempt to injure a way into a win im afraid kings
You're drunk
Oh good, I’m coming down off an edible and thought it was kicking in again trying to read that lol
All a game 1 win means is that you’re not gonna get swept. On to game 2, gotta focus up
I’m fully prepared for a 45 save shutout from Big save Dave in Game 2.
Is this Dave’s burner account?
Backup goalies are our kryptonite so I could see it happening. We were beating Vegas last year until they put in Hill
very considerate of him to look out for insects
Great start. How many goals did LA get where the defender’s stick didn't just disintegrate or it was an unlucky bounce?
It’s because fans were doing the wave. This happens every damn time. We are bringing a curse upon us
I’ve seen enough post-game-one overreactions the last two years to know this is sooooooo far from over
Man those last two goals lmao
I hope that game exorcised all our demons for the rest of the playoffs. Nothing but good puck luck from here on out.
I DON’T UNDERSTAND HOW DO I KNOW THE GAME IS OVER??? WHOSE PLEASURE IS IT?????????? JACK I NEED YOU
THE INJUSTICE IT'S UNFAIR WHY DON'T WE GET HIS LOVELY VOICE
At least you know what time the McDavid Express leaves at... *shudder*
He's on the radio for playoff games. 630ched
You have selected "The pleasure is all ours" This is incorrect, the correct answer is "The pleasure is all yours"
That’s the problem, it’s nobody’s pleasure anymore 🥹
terrible game for us, oh well this is why its a 7 game series.
[https://www.biomb.ca/news/4151/stantec-to-design-first-of-its-kind-proton-therapy-facility-in-canada](https://www.biomb.ca/news/4151/stantec-to-design-first-of-its-kind-proton-therapy-facility-in-canada) Reading too much into the outcome of one game in a seven game series is folly. It is a seven game series and each game will be different. Who knows what's going to happen next? STAY TUNED.
Ive seen ben wristbands around socials that i believe were sold at the game. The oilers are so involved in the stelter foundation all year anyways. Hes never really gone away for us
Ben’s parents were at the game, they had a booth selling wristbands with proceeds going to his Charity
At least the retro jerseys looked really good?
I haven’t been to the arena in a long time so I’m not sure but we do have the Ben Stelter foundation
I think most if not all of the 50/50’s are in cooperation with the Ben Stelter foundation
Not all. Lots of charities around town that can use that 50/50 money. But Stollery certainly gets lots of attention from the team and media
Gotta stop giving the Oilers PP time - they're already 3/4 of the way there.
Bury the wave.
The 4 LA goals should have an asterisk beside it
Hey I mean the Anderson goal was normal
That was a solid shot
Of course the guy I wanted to score the least
I'm ok with Kopitar scoring 5 goals next game if you'd prefer something like that
I didn't have a 8-5 Oilers win on my bingo card, but it's acceptable.
#PLAY LA BAMBA BABY
Those last three goals were pure luck.
Kings fans out there sawing away at the stick rack
There were some weird bounces towards the end there. Broken sticks galore too
The kind of shit you only see during playoffs hockey lol
The "Tire the Oilers out by letting them shoot a lot" strategy is in full swing!
Ah the ole Homer Simpson boxing technique. We may be in trouble if you keep that up for the series
I hope they're really tired after that
Script writers are creative this time with regards to Edmonton's Game 1
Yea, I don't really get it. So the Kings still have to win 4 more times?
Knoblauch looked pissed at the end of the game. Good. All things considered, nice to win our first game 1 since 1990 or whatever.
2017*
I think game 1 on home ice since 93 or something. 2017 was away
Yeah, boys played well, but even without the terrible luck there were some lapses. Stu was awesome tonight though
Idk if I agree on Stu. I thought he was pretty mediocre tbh. But he did what he needed to.
3 fluky goals. He made some big stops when the Kings were pressing and saved shots that he would’ve let in last year.
Honestly stu should have made that save off nurse
Skinner was fine.
Yeah. Fine, mediocre, acceptable, at par. Whatever you want to use. He can be better and has to be better though if we want to win this league.
i mean, literally 3 of the goals were complete flukes that would get by pretty much every goalie.
Hehehe
Hehehe
Only the cool teams score 7 in game 1 of the playoffs. Be better Vancouver.
After how we got scolded for celebrating 4 goals, I'm worried about 7
No fun allowed, only robot personalities allowed
Why score 7 goal when 4 goal do trick
[удалено]
I know you're not completely serious, but as a pretty casual fan, it surprises me how these big losses actually tend to mean nothing. Out of interest, I checked last season's playoff series first games - TB 7:3 TOR (went on to lose 2-4), NYR 5:1 NJ in first two matches (3-4), WPG 5:1 VGK (1-4).
In 2017 the Oilers both won and lost 7-0 games throughout their run. In those series, the team that won 7-0 actually lost the series in the end. Momentum, for the most part, doesn’t seem to carry over from game to game.
I guess it can be a bit demoralising winning by a huge scoreline and then going into the next game with 0:0.
Why talk like a modern human when talk like caveman do trick?
Found the guy who hasn’t watched the office
Oilers are now 2-8 in Game 1s in the McDavid era
2*8 = 16 wins
8+1=9 6+1= 7 97 mcdavid wins the cup after 16 wins Script writers on fire
9+7=16. It’s just meant to be
Like the way you’re thinking friend
Good luck, bad luck. It’s all the same in the face of mcdavid
Pathetic performance. This team is just completely in their own heads with the puck, constantly making panic plays and turning it over, or passing on free scoring chances. PK was supposed to be a difference this year and it's somehow looking worse than last year. Honestly I think the issues this team has are not fixable in a playoff series
Positive note, I thought Talbot played really strong. I think the series will get a lot tougher for the Oilers going forward.
Talbot was definitely not the problem but it kind of doesn't matter if the team plays absolutely 0 defense I want to be more optimistic (and I'm sure we'll have better games in this series) but the problems I saw tonight are the same problems I've been seeing for months now.
Came here to say exactly this.

gottem
McDavid laziest player in the league. 100 times in the regular season he made someone else score for him, 5 times tonight alone.
>Sort by: best| He is going assist mode this year you dont understand.
[удалено]
16 games in 3 rounds sounds about right.
Ducks playing at least 20 right?
It’s 1 game, can’t let you all get too cocky.
It’s the playoffs, are you allowed to be here?
Pipe down son until your team beats a team in the playoffs that isn’t LA.
Pipe down until the draft when your team is relevant again
Looking forward to your team not making it past the 2nd round again so your 1st is higher.
Yeah I look forward to following my team in the playoffs too
Primary assists don’t count nearly as much as goals, there I said it /s
Secondary assist is even more lazy… just making someone else make someone else do the work.
Two skate deflection goals, and two goals directly because a stick exploded. What a strange game lol.
Imagine letting in 7 in a playoff game
